Think of how fun it would be if the two of you - Woody and Gus - talked while on helium... I know it's probably childish, there's a legit reason why divers use helium in their gass - mixture. But it makes me laugh myself silly 😂😂😂😆😆

Part of the rescue diver cert is to make sure you never approach a panic diver from the front. Approach from the back, get the diver between your legs, get one hand on his regulator and the other hand free to assist a slow ascent. This was a test for the other divers. You guys are great.
Regarding taking the mask off the panicked and berserk diver - in his "Blueprints For Survival", p. 41 one of the pioneers of cave diving, Sheck Exley, recommends flooding the mask of the victim to incapacitate them *as a last resort*. "If you choose to attempt to handle an active, berserk diver anyway, try to get behind him with a firm grasp on the tank valve and also the tank. If you become involved in a struggle, flooding his mask while possibly making him even more panicky, may enable you to get the upper hand. As soon as you are in control you may begin towing the victim in a manner similar to the described under 'narked (sic) diver' on the preceding page." What the instructor did there looks exactly like this description. Whether this mode of action is appropriate and recommended nowadays is a different matter.

I'm not seeing pelvic fins, so that and it's shape leads me to think it's a swordfish. I think the reason the swordfish "attacked" was because of the way the swordfish's eyes work. They have unique eyes made to work in deep, dark depths and cold temps. There is an organ near their brain that warms it and their eyes in a way that allows them to detect traces of light given off by prey in darkness. I think the unnatural lights on the rig & bell, as well as the color of the dive suits, and the diver's own movements caused the fish to mistake that as prey. They'd have no reason to expect anything else. The swordfish went to "slash", not knowing that the diver was not their normal food. They are only perceiving the flashes of light, not the shape. I hope they were able to remove and let it go alive.
Also, while swordfish can form small schools, they are more often solitary hunters. When they are seen together, it is more likely they were all drawn in by whatever is being hunted. Much like sharks do.

I really like this concept too. I get a little bored with the 25-30 minute videos about a 3 minute clip.
Seen the mask being pulled off before on a panicked diver. This person was fighting to get away and get to the surface as fast as possible. They pulled the mask so the diver could no longer see or fight. It made the diver stop fighting cause they can’t see and the only thing they can do is breath while the dive master and another diver held on to each other for a nice controlled ascent.
That makes sense to me.

In the fist video, the incident occurs at a little over 221 meters deep (~ 725 ft). You can see the depth at the bottom right part of the screen, but then the ROV is hovering over the diver who is a bit deeper.

The Washing Machine sounds amazing and pretty hilarious. Woody says "it's only a couple of minutes," but in turbulence like that, I bet a couple of minutes feels like a long time!
What's scary to most people about currents is that they can't exactly be controlled in the sense you would control a car... They simply exist and suddenly you're hauling ass without any effort, and in fact, it takes a LOT of effort just to not be hauling ass...
What comes with training is the understanding of how currents work... which is rather like invisible rivers under water... SO when you want to stop, just get out of the "river"... and you're free to do as you wish...
Once you understand and can practice THAT, currents aren't so scary anymore. Undertow isn't terrifying if you just know which direction to swim... BUT too many people flirt with disaster by not knowing or getting the training they should have before hitting the ocean for recreational swimming.
AND the correct direction for escaping undertow (for those interested) or so-called "rip-currents" is parallel to the shoreline... Either way will work, but don't bother fighting the current.. since the rip currents or undertow pulls you out to sea, you're only going to exhaust yourself on a losing battle. Going parallel to the shore, you "get out of the river"... as it were. ;o)

@@Amarantine0930 Yeah... and while I was born in the Rocky Mountains and grew up in the Appalachians, I got lucky enough to learn how to deal with rips and other currents (like just don't fight the current)...
BUT every year, dozens of tourists hit the beach "never to return" because they do NOT learn how to contend with currents... rip or otherwise. ;o)

In April 2016, Paolo Eduardo, a saturation diver, was making minor repairs when a swordfish attacked him, stabbing his oxygen tank and becoming entangled in his scuba gear. Eduardo went to a diving bell to get help and avoid decompression. The bell is pressurized to match the diver's current pressure so he doesn't need to decompress.
The diver was able to survive because the swordfish's bill created an airtight hole in the tank. v
I love the education that this channel brings. Not just going over silly/crazy content, but teaching people well and warning people about all the details that go into diving.

You guys are legitimately getting me into diving and i really want to get trained in cave diving, i just want to see all this beautiful stuff with my own eyes. I want to conquer my fears of deep dark water and learn the ins and outs of how to make it safer.

While its not diving, i see some parallels with professional tree climbing, where some basics transfer well. 1 Know the safety rules and follow them . 2 know how to set up your gear properly, and practice in a safe environment with a mentor. 3 know your limits and the limitations of the gear you are working with and stay within that. 4 Trust your gear and your capabilities. When these are followed you can have a (relatively speaking) safe and enjoyable experience.
As they are continuously mentioning, proper training is key and the place to start. With that the rest follows.
@@brandonleconte4922 Hey Brandon, you should approach your local dive center and talk to them. You may try a thick wet suit or a wet suit with an ice west (that's what my father and I are doing here in the baltic sea, but only in summer ^^) or you may try a semi dry suit or even a dry suit. The last one needs some extra training but you wouldn't be the first one to learn to diving in a dry suit. :)

Following Desert Storm, I had a chance to drift dive in the Persian Gulf and it was a hoot. There are channels in the Gulf carved out of the bottom to accommodate the tankers. We would get out of the boat in chest level water, walk for about 20yds. and step off into 20-30 ft. drop and current and rocket out. The diver boat would follow us and be ready to pick us as we excited the current. Before we step'd we told out divers, 1) do NOT reach out to grab anything to slow or stop your dive 2) see number one. Reasons: you will rip your skin which will put blood in the water which brings us some unwanted friends. We'd just lived thru the War and none of us wanted to go home in a body bag.
Lol the places we deployed too, we were not even allowed to go into the water. Clearly ppl before us dud something stupid lol

I'm an occupational therapist and I often use cold water compresses to change a significant behavior, quickly. It jolts the nervous system. I do it under different circumstances but...
"Dive master with split fins" should be a syntax error in English.
16:20 : Unfortunatelly I had to do the same last year. A panicked diver that should not be even 10 miles away from water, she started swimming to the surface by removing her regulator. I was behind her and tried to stabilize her (we were diving at 50-60 feet for 30 minutes already). 2 other divers came in front of her attempting to donate air. She started violently pulling their hoses, including the necklace they were breathing from. I removed her mask, and we force fed her the regulator until she relaxed on the way up. It's one thing being suicidal and another thing endangering good buddies that try to help you. In the latter case, it makes sense to lose your right to see, so actually the others can more easily force feed you the only thing that keeps you alive at 60 feet.
Btw, she could not recall anything and had no idea about her behavior, she only remembered that she was feeling claustrophobic or something.
P/S: I am not a trained rescue diver, but my first thought was to protect the others, similarly inexperienced divers back then, that were feeling less comfortable in the water. That was before my 20th dive :).

Sure she knew what she did she was just trying to get out of being blamed for her reckless behaviior. Criminales use that excuse all the time- i blacked out and dont remember anything. Yea sure thing buddy
@@utecastronoova863 She is a "friend", so I don't think she was lying. For context that was a scientific dive, the first person that pulled his gear was my professor, a very senior guy, while the other one was her professor. Speaking with her personally, I don't think that she had any criminal intention, she is not a bad person...
To prove further my case, after we were discussing trying to clam her down etc, she just said that she afraid of the water and she thought that scuba would help her. Now the most ridiculous thing is that that was not her first dive, it was just a dive that the water turned slightly darker becuase it took place late afternoon. Moreover we are working on underwater robotics, which means that out of all the available options in life she decided to do a PhD, out of all the disciplines in Computer Science, out of all the fields in CS the only one where you get your hands dirty (robotics), and out of the infinite different fields in robotics, she chose to work in an underwater robotics lab. Pretty crazy if you think of it. I don't believe she would share such info if she was not sincere...
Anyway.
@@Yggdrasil42 1 second she was next to me, LITERALLY the other one she was flying to the skies after I asked her to check her SPG. I was able to catch her by the tip of her fin... Due to that expreience I try to always be aware as much as possible, which I consider it a nice outcome.
@@mariosx12 dopanine is the trigger here. You burn it up very fast in a panic attack. The rapid eye movement burns it up in the brain. When you took off her goggles she had to shut her eyes and have more to spare. Going completely flat on dopamine causes a fuge/blackout state, same thing happens when you drink.
Humans are so funny. "Look, we've mastered the delicate art of surviving a short time underwater, let's go in this complex water current we call the Washing Machine, for fun". Gotta love it.

When I first became a dive master, I took a newly wed couple on a DSD on a 5 m dive in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. They were not confident swimmers so we had two instructors with us as well. We did a shore entry and finned out to the dive site (it's like 80m from the beach) and after checking they're okay we started our descent. we get like 2m down and the woman started panicking. She was thrashing around and proceeded to rip my regulator out of my mouth. When you do your training, the instructors tell you this can happen, but I didn't really ever think it would happen. Luckily I stayed calm and followed all the correct procedures and her and I actually ended up having a lovely dive. That and a titan trigger fish chewing a chunk out of my fin were the two craziest things! Oh and a rehabilitated turtle biting my hair while cleaning a tank in the aquarium😂

The panicking diver scene: Maybe it was a training demo for an advanced dive course. Maybe for how to control a panicking diver and demo of what a panicking diver will do.
I agree, but if not a demo, maybe he became unintentionally attached to the diver behind him somehow so he was trying to keep the other divers away to avoid respirators being yanked out etc?
we done things like that on rescue classes ,things panic divers will do if you don`t know how to help ,they will swim to you and will rip your 2nd stage from your mouth so they can take a breath in panic or they will clamp to you like a octopus putting you in harms way if not ready... is a safety class ...panic divers are unpredictable ! the best way to control a panic diver is from behind so he can`t get a hold of you or any part of your equipment then you offer a octopus stage or your own 2nd stage then you breathe from your stage in the inflator if you have one...never swim towards a panic diver straight from the front , go under him and that`s how you hold him from the back ... a rescue class is the best safety class after getting certify to learn hands down, even cpr while in the water to a boat.

panicked diver appears to me like its one of those random rescue diver training scenario's where the instructor is trying to kill you.... i.e. the one you dont want!

I did two drift dives in Cozumel. The first on "the Wall" at 85 feet, which was exciting, and then in shallow over sand (about 30 feet) which was calm and cool.

I love the thought of riding the currant. I would absolutely love doing that if I ever get the chance to go diving. Because I have been currant swimming and it's freaking awesome. Except the one time I almost drowned and puked when I thank God made it to the shore but it was a unique experience and location of where 3 channels of water ways connected to a river around a river rock island in a tight fast flowing confluence and this undertow pulled me and it probably was the scariest moment I've ever had swimming. It took all my effort to swim out of the river but I always went with the currant and didn't fight the currant but still it kept me from getting over to the side unless I gave it all my energy to get there. Then I threw up once I got on land because my heart was beating so fast, my breathing was going so fast I hyperventilated until puking. It was a learning experience lol
The swordfish was probably just cruising along, you know, he's on his phone or whatever, speeding a bit since they're fast and suddenly BANG and he's a stuck in some freaking monster who's dragging him into what can only be an actual hell. I hope he survived :-D
I would say the swordfish was hunting and the diver just happened to get in the way. When fish are on the hunt and trained on their meal they have tunnel vision and put the pedal medal lol. Someone around here was swam into the path of a tuna on the hunt and ended up with a broken arm and shoulder.

Panicking people are some of the worst to be around. When my family and I were younger, my 3 sisters and I went banana boating which is riding an inflatable raft behind a speedboat and they try to knock you off for fun. We were eventually thrown off and the raft somehow overturned landing right over top of us, preventing us from surfacing right away. In a heartbeat, thrashing and kicking was everywhere because my sisters didnt know what to do, so they eventually found my neck and head and used me to push themselves up for air which didnt work cause there was a fucking raft over us. All we had to do was swim 3 feet over to literally any direction and we wouldve been fine. Fact is, most people cant handle simple pressure. Relax, collect your thoughts and plan a next move. Dont be like my sisters. I still remember it to this day (15 years later) and hold that grudge deep down because their stupidly almost killed me..and it wasnt the only incident involving water. Funny part was, the most panicked was the one who swam competitively in high school. Simply put I will avoid people who cannot keep their emotions in check because they will throw to the wolves without thought.
Yep that's what panic does. Rational thought disappears. Best wat to avoid it is to avoid panic by gradually increasing your exposure to things beyond your comfort level. Too much at once will panic many people. A common approach in technical and cave diving.

It wasn’t a panicking situation, imo. Gus got it right, I believe. That makes the most sense based on the body language and common sense. Just some experience divers trying out an exercise to see what would play out. The so called angry Dive master kicking out at his fellow workers!? No bloody way. Makes zero sense.

I think either Woodie is right- it's a drill, that's about all that makes sense. I think they ripped the guys mask off as a way to make him stop trying to fight them. Think about it, if you did that to someone who was panicking and trying to hurt those around them- they would stop because now they're concerned with getting their gear back on correctly. It's certainly not going to calm their panic but, it would occupy them for sure.

That's the way I read it too. The diver behind took off his mask and the panicked diver *did* stop, it seemed.
I agree, as soon as they ripped his mask off, he magically stopped panicking, so he must have been acting. An actual panicking person wouldn't suddenly be calm like that.
Hey frm Aussie, I don’t dive, I was led to this channel after watching swordfish video’s of them impale and stab people fishing via breaching out of the water into the deck of the boat, from there I haven’t been able to stop watching all your dive talk video’s, it’s very fascinating for me as a non diver and in general, anyways I wanted to say thanks for your time and uploads n mostly the explanation to things needing to be.. I am going on my 1st diving lesson next week, I am cautious of things I wouldn’t have even thought about safety wise.. So thanks for your time and the uploads! I appreciate it lots.. #DiveTalk

That Marlin attack (whilst serious I know) is hilarious - You can see both the diver and fish thinking "seriously... this was a bad idea... now what..." :-)! Glad it seemed like it didn't hit anything serious and he got back to the bell okay! Reading up on it - it ties into your previous video - the swordfish impaled itself on his Divex bail out rebreather! So it saved him - just not in the way it was intended! Apparently it managed to escape when he was trying to get back into the Bell and "both diver and fish were swimming around at the end of it" so no fish supper afterall :-)! I know what Woody means about fast drift diving - I've done some similar 5-6kt drift dives on the West Coast of Scotland, awesome fun - obviously needs to be briefed first, definitely need a DSMB (I'd argue you always need one), when you fire it it will go off at an angle and you'll need to swim towards/under it otherwise it can pendulum you up to the surface. In terms of separation and this scenario my personal opinion is that it should be anticipated and put into the dive brief - you need to work out before hand whether you're diving as budy pairs or as a whole group - if you're buddy pairs then his buddy should have gone with him and the others can legitimately continue the dive as their buddy pairs. The pair that's drifting if they've gone off together needs to be careful as they could drift along way from the boat and I'd argue if the plan was to be anchored then they should surface. Bizarre - the mask ripping thing was wierd, I don't know what was going on, he didn't seem particularly like he was panicking - the movements were very intentional... Gus might be right - he might have been someone playing a panicked diver and going for masks etc. It would make it harder for a panicked diver to grab something but actually you can usually see okay without a mask, personally would think it would make you more likely to panic but there you go.

@@tamo9520 yes actually I should have commented on how well the diver handled the situation - unexpecred problem, can't solve it, no idea which systems may be about to fail, protect umbilical and abort the dive - all within a few seconds!

I heard an opinion that ripping mask off from a panicking diver can help to calm them down, like sudden shock.
Also, when I was doing my Rescue class instructors were constantly ripping my mask off and I was supposed to replace it with a spare one.
At the end of the video it seemed like that guy was reaching to the pocket, probably for the spare mask?

I have for many years, taken a 'camelback' drink pouch along on warm water dives (primarily to drink at the surface while awaiting pickup) but as long as the liquid is 'flat' (no gas dissolved) and you are in full control of your buoyancy it is very possible and easy to drink from the 'bite valve ' underwater.... just make sure to squeeze out all the air when you fill it and close it! (would also be a great asset if your boat didnt show up for some reason and that coupled with a sun hat which i also used to dive with!)
I usually had a couple of Capri-Sun pouches in my pockets when I was diving in the Med. Very handy on a long dive.

I love your channel! Quick question - I have gotten conflicting information about the lost buddy procedure. My original open water instructor (years ago) told me to go up after 30 seconds of searching and to MAKE a safety stop on the way up. Recently, as I was finishing my rescue certification, I was told to SKIP the safety stops in this scenario (because having a lost diver decreases the 'safety' of the divers - therefore making the 'safety' stop a bad idea). Which instructor is correct? Would it make a difference if we are talking about a mandatory decompression stop? I think that you should stop for your own safety, but would love to get your thoughts. Thank you in advance!
Although the safety stop is not mandatory, I would say that it all depends on what kind of dive you just did and what you were doing, if you lost your buddy after spending 10 minutes at 100 feet, I would not advice you to skip your safety stop, I would say go up to 50 feet and do a one minute stop looking for your buddy in the process (so spining and looking up and down), and then go to 20 feet and do another safety stop and look for your buddy.
Now if this was 5 minutes into the dive and you just lost your buddy at 30 feet then yeah I think you can search for 30 seconds and go to the surface slowly...I would probably continue to search as I ascend to the surface slowly.
Just be aware of where you are, I don't believe that there is an answer that works on every case on this one, those who say "Just skip the stop" are not thinking about deeper dives with bottom times near your NDL or else I don't think they would advise it, and those who say "Always make the stop" are not thinking about shallow dives where the whole time you spent at a safety stop depth.

The 3 divers were fighting. Keep in mind the dive we watched wasn't a recreational dive. It was a commercial dive. These are 2 coworkers who drank too much the night before and they had to work together after a scuffle.
My first thought too. They had some beef going on since earlier and had been drinking the night before the dive. The guy being held down looks like a pouty little kid sulking.

Personally I work in the dive industry and its quite common. People doing these coral conservation project do it throu volunteer projects. Usually its super rich kids sent away by their parents so the will get rid of the kids for 6 months up to year. All of them are gonna be divemasters and instructor because daddy pays. They go zero to hero and often is really bad of what they do. They are in a tropical place, lots of cool bars and clubs and the dive industry is quite unhealthy. They go out drink themself shit faced every night and smokes pot. Next day the look like shit and are hungover. So it's only need one small thing to ignite a fight. I love when these kids come and realise the won't get everything served on a sliver platter and the shock in their eyes when they realise they need to carry their own gear and tanks are priceless. Not to talk about when the go into their DMT and have at least 12-14 hours workdays, planning and reading the course literature after work. I can say 90% won't finish their DMT and their rest that do won't work with it. Then they call daddy for extra money so they can stay another year and become hippies that go all in on the booze, pot, women and STD/STI's. After a year they are so broke mentally a physically so they beg daddy on their bare knees to come home and do a quickie on rehsb and then start working for daddy and huöis business.

When I saw the dive master drifting because of the strong currents a question popped in my mind: are there currents that can push you towards the surface? Let's say you have to do decompression stops but you can''t because the current pushes you towards the surface. did that even happen/ can ever happen?
Yes, absolutely can happen.

There is a spot here where it happens so bad it gives fish the bends and kills them on the spot. Then eagles eat them. I havent seen divers at that spot. A few seals (animals, not navy seals), so maybe its possible, dunno.

There is another “Panicked Diver” video that shows a very similar scenario happening in with a young lady being held from behind by the DM. She also rips off the mask of a person coming toward her and the DM rips her mask off right after that. It seemed like it calmed her down right away for some reason. It did make me wonder if this was a last resort tactic.
I was teached to do that if the driver in panic can put other drivers in danger.

It's definitely a swordfish, as evidenced by its flat bill. It was obviously an accident, like the one which famously happened to the submarine "Alvin" in the 1960s (the 200-pound swordfish was killed).
It's always so clear to me that you both are born leaders, specifically because you never *TRY* to lead, but you end up doing it anyway because of confidence, experience and genuine care.
In particular, your mentioning of how people look to you by default reminds me of experiences I've been through, even when I didn't want that responsibility.

As a ex corrections officer if you blind someone they tend to calm down. But underwater when other issues could happen it’s not a smart ideal.

What if dive master was acting like a panicked diver….guy came to help and the dive master tries to take off the other guys mask to “teach him a lesson.”
The other dive master (on his back) saw that the “panicked diver” crossed the line when he tried to remove the students/other diver’s mask, so he ripped his mask off….
