In this episode Tom and Greg set off from Washington DC and head for thee wilderness of Shenandoah Valley National Park where they plan to hike some of the Appalachian trail. Hiking alone won't be enough though - they'll need to hitchhike multiple times, and so far there has been no evidence that anyone (other than a fan of the channel) would pick them up. Failure to hitch a ride could leave them stranded in the mountains without proper camping equipment. In gun toting America though, that ain't their only worry...

@@warzone6700 Agreed. Hell, even some of the mountains we’ve got in the Pacific Northwest trumps those guys. But the Rockies are a whole other ball game. The appeal of the Appalachian is that they’re easy to hike (relatively) because they’ve been worn down by geological effects.

@@leeartlee915 I agree I came here to say this. I live in the south (Kentucky) and although I don’t believe he realizes this when saying this, Tom is a guest in this beautiful country and it looks really distasteful to offend a large portion of the US by calling them/us rednecks based on the location that they live. I don’t think it’s in Tom’s heart to purposely offend someone he doesn’t even know, so I just wanted to leave this message here in hopes that he may happen upon it. It’s just derogatory term that I don’t think he understands really upsets some people.

I thru hiked the AT in 2014. The people you meet on the trail are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. I started solo and ended up finishing in a group of 7. The friendships i forged will last a lifetime. Years later in 2019, i joined up with a few of them for another hike that extends further north into Canada. We met another group along the way and decided to hike together for a while. That is where i met Elizabeth. We hit it off right away. We are getting married in April.

As a native Virginian (first of Northern VA about 40 miles from DC, and now in the Richmond area), I’m glad you got a chance to truly enjoy and appreciate some of the beauty of our state! Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway are places I’ll often head out to on a drive to clear my head. That summer humidity always plays well on the layers of mountains to give that gradient effect. They may not be as high or majestic as the Rockies or Cascades, but the mountains here have a unique and friendly beauty to them, along with being accessible for most of the year.
Pro tip: the white-tailed deer you saw were probably mostly ladies, as the bucks have antlers. They are absolutely *weirdly* tame up there because of the propensity for campers and hikers to be sources of food for them.

hitchhiking is extremely uncommon in the US in my experience. you probably had better-than-usual luck because you were near the AT, where people are more used to seeing thru-hikers hitching lifts into town. Terry is such a bro. Now that I got a reliable truck, a couple of backpackers in or near a park is an easy pickup for me so long as they're willing to ride in the bed (which is indeed legal for adults in most states), but I can't promise cold refreshments! usually don't have space in the cab either 😅

Plus, riding in the bed of a truck is a pretty quintessential country experience so I'm glad you guys got to do that! I've hitched rides plenty of miles, and given rides to many a strangers myself. Zion NP and Yellowstone / Grand Teton are very receptive to hitching rides. It's such a strange gap in culture compared to the east where I am from. Would be neat to see a series where you explore various western parks and natural lands this way! Terry is awesome. Awww and the hotel owner was incredible. If I am ever in that part of virginia I know where I am staying. You guys really need to visit the midwest/south. I live in oklahoma and we have decent hospitality. But by far the place with the nicest people (that I have visited) is Saint Louis surprisingly.
Sorry for the long story. When I was 19 my band went on a short tour and our first 2 days outside of Tulsa were St. Louis. St. Louis is where Budweiser is located so we wanted to have a beer. But the drinking age is 21. I don't/didn't really drink so I wasn't too into it but I was down to help the homies. We spent about an hour walking around downtown trying to figure out who to ask. Just as we were about to give up, without asking literally anyone, we rounded a corner and physically ran into 4 college students (well 3 students and a friend of theirs). As we were apologizing we all kinda glanced at each other and our lead singer spoke up asking if they could buy us a case of beer. The students looked at us, asked where we were from and then agreed. As this was happening a lady, probably in her mid 60s who was walking her dog, asks "Are you all trying to drink underage?!?" uh oh we were caught. Then she says "because if you are, this is st louis, nobody cares. You can just go into this bar and they're not going to ID you" We were blown away. But we continued on with our plan and walked a couple of blocks to a convivence store with the students. They went in and got us a case of something. I don't remember as this was ~15 years ago. When they came out with the beer they asked what our plan was to do afterwards. We had not thought that far ahead. We had considered going into the big park there but literally everyone told us do not go into the park after dark. The students then asked if we wanted to go back to one of their studio apartments and play beer pong. Of course we did. We stayed out with them till about 3am. They were incredible people the 2 guys were in school to be a doctor and a lawyer one of the girls was there to get her MBA and the other I think just lived there and wasn't in school but it was her birthday. I wish I could remember their names but again its been way too long. Anyways we left their place and of course my drunken bandmates wanted to tempt fate and take the shortcut to our hotel... through the park... Which we did and nothing happened. We didn't see a single person in the park and I ended up with a great photo of the arch and the capitol building. At least it was great for a non-smart phone nighttime photo in 2009. We made it back to our hotel (the one in the old train station, its really nice) in one piece. We woke up to thunderstorms in the morning and then headed to the music festival we were playing. As we were playing our late afternoon set they shut us down as the storms were not going away. Some BBQ joint owner came up to us and asked if we wanted to come play their venue/restaurant that night. Which we declined as we had a show to play that night back in tulsa. But still it was an awesome offer. It was just another example of how incredible the people of st louis are.
Tl:dr St. Louis is awesome and apparently underage drinking isn't as frowned upon as it is everywhere else.

America has had a deeply-rooted car culture since just after WWII. Aside from some big city urbanites, literally everyone has their own car. I got my drivers license, and my first car, the day after my 16th birthday. I'm now 43, and I've travelled all over the midwest, PacNW, the plains. I don't believe I've ever seen a hitchhiker in my 27 years of driving. It's just extremely rare here. As such, my guess is that most people are so baffled by seeing it that it doesn't occur to them to stop until they're like a half mile down the road. Oddly enough, the one exception is at intersections of the AT and the PCT with major roads. People often hitchhike into and out of towns from the AT and PCT. There are people that give rides, hand out trail-friendly food, equipment and stuff. They're lovingly referred to as trail angels. If you had parked yourself at such an intersection, you might have had more luck.
Also, regarding "Guns In Use," that likely is more of a warning than a threat.... meaning, firearms are discharged on the property, and if they don't know you are there you could accidentally be in the line of fire.
