Will this guy at the Taco Stand sell us his car? (How NOT to travel America #6)

The epic adventure continues with this absolute humdinger of an episode.
After messing about on boats, bikes and on foot for over two weeks now, we are left with no choice but to purchase our very own vehicle. A clapped out Buick, Lincoln, or anything else that embodied America's golden years. But where do we look? Craigslist? A car salesmen? or some random guy at a taco stand? obviously we chose the latter, and the series of events that followed this will have your head in a spin, and your faith completely restored in humanity simultaneously.
Later on in the episode I sing a country duet with a local man, and me and Greg attend a wild fraternity tailgate party at a college football game. This episode has it all.

Guys can we please stop flooding the angry man's business page with scathing reviews! As hot headed as he seemed he may well have had an on going problem with drug dealers or other illicit activities on his lot and had gotten sick of it. I'm only halfway into this video butbI couldn't wait, had to leave this comment.
The joy and amusement I get from this series is overwhelming, Tom. I've watched likely thousands of hours of TH-cam in my life and nothing has ever made me feel so invested in a story like this before. There are videos with insane production value made by teams of tapented people that don't even come close to making something as genuinely fun to watch as this. Just 2 silly dudes from the UK filming a roadtrip on a gopro probably, and edited I'm assuming by Tom alone and it's fucking amazing. On a primarily geowizard based TH-cam channel no less. I can't even wrap my head around it. Your channel is so simple and yet has brought me more enjoyment than so many other channels combined.
The bit with Paul was genuinely one of the most feel good segments of video I've ever seen and it has also restored my faith in humanity and I'm not even involved in this shit. As an American I was a bit afraid you'd meet a lot of shitty people and have a bad experience but apparently I was wrong and I'm really glad I was wrong. Idk how you keep finding these people but it makes for really good content and I'm glad this has gone the way it has. You're reaching my neck of the woods soon (North Carolina) and I'm interested to see how close you got to where I'm at. Wish I could have somehow helped you out on the journey, it would have been awesome to contribute to your escapades.
That's enough ranting, I'm gonna finish the video now. Thank you for this channel, it really has been a trip and I hope we continue to get these wacky adventure videos. Fuck yea, man.

This series has absolutely been one of my favorites, not least because you’ve trodden right through my backyard and seen some of the wonderful parts of America (by which I mean only somewhat geographic, and mostly humanitarian.)
A quick insight to the “angry landowner”: Waynesboro is a bit known for drug activity. Paulie’s “this is where we make the meth” joke was tongue-in-cheek. A lot of that does go on in the Shenandoah Valley. The guy who wanted you to move along probably deals with a lot of shady individuals doing deals in his lot, sadly, and didn’t buy your story even though it was legit.

oh man, how do I fit everything into one comment here… 12:10 you passed and showed on screen where I worked for 8 years. There’s an office building with the green roof on the left and a warehouse on the right. I used to run that warehouse. We shipped humanitarian aid overseas to places like Jordan, the Philippines, Venezuela, Ukraine, etc. My daughter still works there as the janitor. I never would have thought in a million years it’d get a blip on your channel but here we are!
Even more amazing was that you ran into local legend Paulie Matheny! I recognized him immediately at the taco truck downtown and am not at all surprised that he was so helpful to you all. I’m sad that you didn’t get to try his food as it is truly magnificent. Best in the business. This only grows his legendary status in my mind.
Lastly, you literally drove right by my house on your way out of town. You were on Mount Torrey Road, I’d recognize those mountains and houses anywhere. I understand why you took I-81 but am sad you had to go that route instead to make progress. Would have loved to see you go through the rest of Augusta or Nelson counties. Truly a beautiful area. So thankful that you spent so much time with us in Waynesboro! Sorry about the grump who fussed at you… Wboro is definitely not lacking in druggies.

Although extremely American on the one hand, it ironically also felt much more like the Europe trip. People seemed less stressed, more adventurous, less afraid of anything that's not their daily routine. Anyway, looking forward to your next episode. Cheers.

As an insurance professional, I must say that Paulie's life could have well and truly been ruined if things had gone wrong with your vehicle. If you'd been in an at fault accident where people died, he could have been sued for everything he has. He's trusting to a fault, and I'm glad that everything seems to have turned out ok with it. To say he was generous and trusting is the understatement of the year.

Correct me if I'm wrong... but it has always been my understanding that insurance coverage was effective regardless if the vehicle has been registered. I have purchased out of town cars multiple times- I've always written a bill of sale (and usually a filled out title unless it was filed electronically only), added the car to my insurance policy, and drove home to register it at my local DMV. I understand since the car is technically still registered to the previous owner, if I were to get into an accident on the way home, their name would come back as the vehicle owner... but I've always kinda assumed the bill of sale and my own insurance negated the p/o's liability. Right or wrong? Thanks in advance.

    • @usroadtripper
      @usroadtripper ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@indiextronic In general, yes that's right. Your insurance should automatically cover any vehicle you purchase for a certain amount of time (you policy will say how long) after you purchase it. This is to give you time to get the vehicle home, get the title transferred and get a tag. If you drove off and immediately got into a wreck, the bill of sale would prove that the previous owner was not responsible for the vehicle when it was wrecked. This situation seemed to describe that the vehicle was going to stay registered to Paulie and would stay covered under his insurance. I obviously don't know what his exact contract says, or the contract Tom bought, but if that's what actually happened, Paulie should be VERY happy that there was no wreck.

Anyone who tells you the kindness and hospitality of the South is fake is a bitter, angry person who seemingly has issues within themselves. I wish them luck and have Hope in my heart for them that they have the opportunity to experience kindness so that they may recognize it and open their hearts to it.
I know you hear this every video, but I can't wait for the next one! Very excited to see you in the midst of a common weather occurrence here in the States and looking forward to seeing who you meet next!
Hoping this finds your current project in good shape!

I’ve been following you blokes for a minute now, and I have to say these videos are absolutely liquid serotonin. You remind me of my best friend, and the hijinks we’ve gotten into over the years. Thank you for these. They’re the highlight of my day. These are so captivating I’d be happier paying for them than I am most films at the cinema.

The duality of man truly shown in this episode.
Paulie was like an angel sent from Heaven to help you on your quest. The guy in the red shirt was the exact opposite.

Going to an SEC football game is, and tailgating it no less, is a much higher achievement than drinking a beer from a red SOLO cup.

Man I've smiled like a child for an hour straight. The cheer joy you get from watching these feels existential. You're a genius Tom

I’m 66! Had that Pure Prairie League album when it first came out! Talk about KARMA!
That album is probably the best album in the history of music for you to be listening to on that road trip!!!

Honestly thought that Schwartz Family Quartet, Just Over Yonder was a serious bop but couldn't find it anywhere. Tom should rip it and post it to TH-cam.
