@@JamesTDG Video game companies patent basically everything they can come up with, but there is a Gentlemen´s Agreement that they don´t sue each other over infringing these patents. Basically very early on (like 70`s or early 80`s) there was a case in IIRC Japan where a non-video game company had a fairly generic patent and they tried to sue game studios over it. At that point the Studios agreed to just patent everything anyone can come up with to prevent something like this to happen again. The stupid part with the Road Rage lawsuit is that it´s one of the rare cases where one Studio actually went ahead and sued another studio over one of these patents.

Though I played Hit & Run at many friends’ houses, this was the Simpsons game I actually owned, so I’m far more familiar with it. That grind towards $1,000,000 feels much longer when you’re younger… I pretty quickly zeroed in on using Bart on Springfield Dam, then Frink once I realised he was better. Probably not the best arena, in hindsight. A lot of fond memories of it, even if the janky controls could be very frustrating at times. Also, I heard that one reason for a power/graphical downgrade was that the devs didn’t realise until late into development that their dev kits were more powerful then the actual retail consoles, so some late performance compromise had to be done. Never heard Matt Groening insisted on a more 3D look…!
Watched this video with my friends last night. It's incredible how much personality this game has. The driver selection screen where they all roll up in their different vehicles almost crashing into the screen, I've never seen another game like it. You don't get that kind of love anymore.

Simpson nerd moment: the mascot is actually Capital City's mascot, not Springfield's. :) As for the game itself, by the time I could play it, I had already played Hit & Run, so Road Rage really felt like a beta version of H&R.
@@SECONDQUEST Lots of minor mechanics can actually be patented, especially if they are adding something not been seen before. Like the pointer for an open-world-ish navigation-system. But it did mean other devs had to go with an alternative solution and ended up going for a proper GPS-system showing you either on a minimap or via other in-world-means where to go, which is probably better than an arrow pointing in the vague direction you should go. So, as far as gamers are concerned, the patent was a sensible idea, as it got us something better instead. :P

How can anyone not be allowed to watch The Simpsons? It’s nowhere near as nasty as Family Guy and South Park. All three are my favorite cartoons. I prefer seasons 1-12 of the Simpsons because those were referenced in Hit & Run which is one of the greatest video games of all time. If only I had a PS2 I would buy both those games and play the shit out of them all over again. Great memories from my childhood

I remember in elementary school we were going to watch a movie in class (it was the end of the year so there wasn't anything else to do anyway) and the movie of choice was The Simpson's movie. Played this with my cousin who had an X-box every Christmas Eve we would visit them for many years. It was a tradition we had for a while. I had never seen the Simpsons at that point, but it was fun even watching him play the Sunday Drive mode. So I have a lot of nostalgia for it and could never hate it; a clone though it be.
I remember having almost every high score in the in game list, and one of my friends came over and beat one of the middle ones. Never got around to having every spot. And I also remember that you can pick someone up at Mr Burnes mansion and drop them off on the street in front of the house, and you could keep doing it over and over to bring your score up
This was one of the 1st games i had on my ps2, and played it to death. The only downside is that hit & run basically invalidates it in almost every way.
I don't remember which one of these I played, but exploring Springfield in full 3D for the first time really felt special- even if you were limited to the roads. Just one step closer to a world imagined...

It would be cool if they re-released the game with the entire map interconnected, also, the graphic comparison section is not very clear, the Xbox clearly looks in a lower quality resolution in this video, however, i kind of know the differences between them, not only has to do with texture quality, but also with draw distance and amount of cars on the streets.
You should do a comparison of "The Simpsons Game" next, cause the PSP/PS2/Wii version (made by Rebellion, not EA Redwood Shores) apparently based on earlier versions of the main PS3/X360 version and because of that, it has a ton of differences.
There is a glitch in the ps2 version where if you pick up Moleman you drop him off near the teenager (I think he works for Kristy burger)… but he wants to be dropped off by Moleman. You can run back and forth between them really quickly because it’s such a short trip. I banked like 2 hours in time and you can just free roam without picking anyone up. Figured it out when I was 10 and felt like an absolute G. 😂
I made the stupid mistake of giving my cousin our copy of this on the gamecube. Finally got another copy a decade later. This game is so fun. Especially after a long days work.

Knockoff games are non-infringing as long as they have unique characters and stages and such. Of course, the early 2000s were Sega's lowest point, when the company nearly shut down until Sammy bailed them out. The lawsuit might have been launched out of sheer desperation, hoping for a payout.

They sued them for stealing the Crazy Taxi concept, but they themselves stole the Crazy Hop from another game. Taxi Driver was a game from the 80's and you could jump over stuff in it.
It was either this game or the next one that when it was released I was pleased to see that Barney was a drunk, as he had been made sober in the TV show at the time in an episode written by Dan Castellaneta and his wife which wasn't reversed at the end of the episode. And then he wasn't funny anymore and they just stopped using him for a while. But the game just completely ignored it and Barney was drunk.
Some say sega more nicer to fan games than Nintendo Male any fangame that isnt the blue hedgehog and expect some black cars with sega on the side rolling up to your doorstep
Wow the alpha version looks legitimately better than the final version. The colors are so much nicer and the lighting looks flatter which in this case is a good thing to match the show. Must have been so frustrating as a dev to be told to make the visuals worse from the creator of the show.

I remember visiting my cousin for the weekend, and renting road rage, it was a great time. Always had fond memories of this game.
There is something so eerie seeing the outskirts of Springfield in video game form.

Road Rage also has a ton of cheat codes to get vehicle variants. That's how you get the Christmas Apu.
