I got the wifes 4x4 bogged in the cooling pond of Hazelwood Power Station. (Hazelwood pondage) a few months ago hahaha. Down to the sills. Vacuum stuck real good. Took me about 24 hrs to get that out. Several mates come to help and most just said you lost your car, i cant help. Even decked out pooies. One mate in a Prado decided he was going to get me out and i will be damned he did. Took about 50 attempts with the snatch and a shit load of digging. But we got out. Many mates said the car is gone. It was the never say die attitude and "trying different things" that got that car out. Never give up and treat it like a fun challenge. Something i also do when bogged is STOP everything. Relax and if with others chat about the situation before any pulling occurs. Just literally step back and discuss calmly and slowly. Taking 5 to chill instead of doing something wrong really helps i find. Plus it allows the Adrenalin to settle a bit. Which i find is important for rational thinking. So many times i see people bogged and they run around like the world is going to end. Unless its on a beach and the tide is coming this is crazy. Just makes for mistakes. Even then its still crazy. Couple minutes or deep breathing and calm thinking fixes most things.
I would add to the list to "do it right the first time". I seen too many people try to hurry up and get out of a stuck situation and actually make it worse. I try to spend a few extra minutes and do whatever it takes to ensure you can get out. Great video. Thanks for posting.
Such a good video highlighting the simple things required. I rec'd a call from my daughter just last night, bogged in the sand. First thing I said was lower ur pressures, second thing I said was dig! They were bogged for 90mins and had other vehicles with straps available and still didn't get our. Lazy/uninformed caused the delay!
You can have a heck of a lot of fun and go a lot of places you'd never think you could with a very cheap 4x4. I'm driving a 99 Honda CRV that cost me $1800, and it's taken me to the top of many a rutted and rocky mountaintop. Cheers!
@@WhiteCavendish i had a 2002 rav4 and i loved it, but it was a daily driver. i took rode it through my backyard at times, even in the now, pretending that i was on safari. however with over 300k miles it kept breaking down and so i had to sell it. my mind is set on jeeps, but it appears i`m a long ways from that. at least i can watch others do their thing on youtube, until i get my chance
Old bushmen like Jack Absalom always said to put the billy on when you get stuck. He meant that you need to think about it before you rush in. Like what you say at 3:20
Some good points there. I usually carry a couple of basic bits of equipment and I've ended using that to get someone else unstuck more than I've needed it for myself.
finally a video explaining the 1 of simplest things is drop tyre pressures to 8psi, i still talk to people who are scared to drop below 20psi. it drives me nuts watching videos of guys running high psi and go straight to recovery tracks.
Yep, keep it simple. I spent an hour messing about finding a point to winch from, using a land anchor and straps to extend my winch line etc., in the end all I needed was a waffle board under just one rear wheel, I felt stupid and was exhausted when I finally got unstuck! I also learnt winches are useless with nothing to winch from! P.s. Ronny, where can I find some rear lights like you have, cheers, Doug.
As a solo traveler I couldn't agree more about getting experience. I went off and did courses through 4wd clubs. I always do a 4wd driving course to make sure my ego is in check and do separate recovery course to learn whats new and different ways of doing something.
You don't have to be in the wild to need these lessons! I recently bogged myself in a vacant lot near a busy city street in my Escape. Thankfully, I was able to work myself out, BUT I should have checked the ground more carefully.

@8.10 I pulled a buddy out that sank his stock dodge dakota. had water on his floors and everything. I used my bubba rope and pulled him out, and he felt really heavy like he wasn't helping. when he went to drive he had no forward or reverse. I asked is your transfer case in neutral?....and it was
artardFTW Had a mate sink down in river mud half way thru a large river here in the South Island of New Zealand, tried to use my vehicle as a winch point, winch no go... river rising, stress, I pulled up on solid ground unwound 60m of his winch cable, hooked a drag chain to it, just enough length, took a few tries to drag his ol LandCruiser 60 with my Hilux Surf! Dead weight. Finally got him on solid ground. Mate failed to realise a PTO WINCH REQUIRES TRANSFER IN NEUTRAL!! Thank you for all the great recovery tips I hope I don't have to used them. When I was younger I got stuck a lot and a couple of times I did not have much recovery gear and really had no idea what I was doing but once I had a winch and once a come-a-long but nothing to attach either one to, I was high center in both cases and now I would try to get something under the tires to raise the vehicle off whatever was causing me to be high centered, but as a teenager I wanted to winch myself out of the situation. I had no Deadman anchor (no such thing then) and had never heard or thought about using the spare tire as an anchor and the ground was very hard to dig and would have taken at least a day to dig a big enough hole for either one. I have thought about those situations many times and would like to know what your thoughts are to use a picket-line as anchor point in hard ground as a winch anchor point and the proper way to set it up or just avoid it all together? Thank you, Brian
Pickets as anchor is a huuuuuge subject all on it's own. There's a few youtube vids kicking around. Personally I like a V shape picket line with subsequent pickets also in a v and each of the Vs cascading and equalised down the line. I also like to truckies hitch each picket horizontally along the ground. If you get your pickets right you can pull a massive load. One youtube vid shows the army boys tipping a tank over with a huuuuge winch down to the tank and through a pulley and back up to a picket line. It's fun playing with this sort of thing.

$10 square mouth concreters shovel works well for digging in sand and there really light weight
Why does the rear recovery point on the right only suit a steel shackle? Is it hole size or due to sharp edges or something?
Right, it has sharp edges that will cur a synthetic strap
