    The picture is so solid that on the previous video I thought the picture was freezing. Fortunately, on this vid, the cows cooperated by continuing to move across a rock solid picture. Bless 'em.

    Awesome video Chris, as always. I believe that two wires going to each potentiometer are VCC and GND, on both pots. That means you only need to run 4 wires, VCC, GND, Pot1 Out and Pot2 Out, then bridge VCC and GND at the gimbal. You could use a 4 wire 3.5mm audio jack for better experience. Most audio jacks have switches that automatically cut out each pin once the male connector is plugged in. You could utilize that so you can still use the VRA and VRB potentiometers on the radio.

      Dren Imeraj I was thinking about using a 4 pole jack cable as well

    that's the biggest bugbear with the twiddly little knob on a controller, jerky and poor sensitivity to the slightest movement. You have fixed an issue that I have had for 6 months, thanks

    • @positivemasculinity42
      @positivemasculinity42 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Go to a shop like Jaycar and get a larger knob, larger circumferance , less sensative. The storm32 controller has a easy GUI, you can adjust the speed and acceleration and travel there.

    As I'm struggling to control the gimbal while flying, I'm thinking about small pedals for controlling the gimbal as a way to go for solo filming. Of course, drawback is that you need to have to sit while flying.

    What a classic steady shot really. Loved it

  • @lasersbee

    Smart logical mod....;)
    3:04 You should be able to mechanically trim the Pot position on the Gimbals.
    When they assemble the gimbals at the factory they need to do just that.
    It would also be a good idea to electrically shield the the external wires going to the gimbal.
    15:40 You look awfully low. If you did a RTH without visual line of sight you could have a good chance to run into a tree.

    Chris (is that your name?):
    Yours is my most fun subscribed channel because you have very novel, outside the box ideas, that you document very well so the rest of us can follow your lead. This one was wonderful, and I loved the dutiful cattle migration back to the barn for milking with rock steady quad and smooth camera panning!
    I still want to know what your final solution mounting of the external gimbal evolved to. Seems to me that a side mounting next to the Tx would enable you to control this system by yourself. Alternatively, I wondered how difficult it might be to simply reposition the original pots to the top/side of the Tx similar to sliders on some other transmitter brands.
    I am surprised that Fly Sky has not done this to the FS-i6x next generation to enable very affordable, DIY friendly platform for guys like you and me.
    Keep up your ground breaking, original thinking, and sharing with your growing following on You Tube!
    Would you consider doing a zoom conference for my flying club at Duke University, where I am the token old guy among a crew of bright young enthusiastic Duke students who are mostly engineering majors? Please drop me a line to my email: James.C.Eastep@gmail.com.
    Respectfully, - Jim

    Great videos and a lot of technical projects. Beautiful surroundings as well. This quad is quiet and stable. Might be an idea to use a lens that allows you to zoom in and out. This way you can retain for certain objects away. To the next round, John.

    • @iforce2d
      @iforce2d  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, but then you're talking about a whole different kind of camera, leading to a whole different kinda of gimbal, maybe even requiring a different multi-rotor :)

  • @Trex450S

    Awesome. I see you are using a 550 Hexacopter. Would you mind sharing your PID settings? I have the same setup using the Pixhawk PX4 with an 1100 mAh battery, I'm getting about 20 minutes of flight, but I think it should be better.

    • @iforce2d
      @iforce2d  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      PIDs are not typically something that can be transferred from one aircraft to another, the whole idea is they are tuned for that specific craft. Transferring from iNav to Arducopter is definitely not going to work at all. If you're running Arducopter I would suggest just doing the autotune, it has worked well for me every time I've used it. With a 4S 8000mAh battery I get about 20 minutes flight time, so I assume the 20 minutes with 1100mAh you said must be a typo?

    Hi, was just wondering what flight controller are you using on this hex? after a cheap one with GPS hold. Thanks

    • @iforce2d
      @iforce2d  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cleanflight iNav, using a SPF3 evo on this one but any typical naze32 style board would work as long as it has a barometer, or the appropriate connections to add one, plus a compass and GPS.

    did you buy the gimbal as the direction or throttle one. Sorry im new

    • @iforce2d
      @iforce2d  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For this purpose the direction one would be more convenient. The main body of the gimbal is pretty much the same for both actually, the direction one has one extra spring and the throttle one has a small 'leaf' kinda thing that presses on the back of the stick base to give some friction. You can convert one to the other as long as you have the little spring or the leaf. Open up your radio and have a look at the back of the sticks, you'll see what I mean.

  • @KubicekSK

    Have a question... is this 6 or 8 channel transmiter? I'm new in DIY but I just ordered 6 channel transmitter with the receiver... Does this one let me do the same what you did while I still keep the ability to change the modes? or am I correct if y say that I need one channel for each axis of the gimbal and another channel for changing the flight modes? Another question... do you have an actual view from the camera on a gimbal or only from the little fpv camera on the frame?

    • @iforce2d
      @iforce2d  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you mean you want it to be able to go around and around in the same direction like this, no software setting will help with that. You need a gimbal with a slip-ring. In this video I'm using a slip-ring gimbal converted to STorM32 controller.

    love it!.don't own a flysky radio, but does it have a trainer input and is able to map trainer inputs to specific channels? then u could have done this with an Arduino pro micro generating a cppm signal from stick inputs and feed that to your radio. less destructive and more possibilities for the future...

    • @iforce2d
      @iforce2d  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @iforce2d
      @iforce2d  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the battery voltage, and the motor size and kv rating. Typically this size quad works well with around 2212 or 2216 size 1000kv motors. For motors like that and a 3S battery I use 10 inch props, with 4S battery 9 inch props. It also kinda depends on the total weight being lifted. As a general rule, if the motors get very hot the props need to be smaller.

      If you have one, then you can try to figure it out yourself right? :) You could just use a small voltage regulator to give it 6v, eg. goo.gl/nvZxLX
      To be honest though, you're better off buying 4xAA NiMH rechargeables. They last a long time between charges.

      So you don't see the hd footage in flight just where the camera is pointing through a runcam and vtx?

    • @iforce2d
      @iforce2d  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. Not a runcam though, the XiaomiYi camera has an analog video output via the micro USB connector. In the upper right of this video I have overlaid the video recorded from the goggles: th-cam.com/video/KZaE1qEnIWs/w-d-xo.htmlm14s

    Do you place the battery underneath, for C of G reasons? or?

    • @iforce2d
      @iforce2d  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a kitset frame which has very convenient battery mounting rails underneath. I could make a plate to mount the battery on top, but that makes it awkward to get at the connections on top, so I'll leave it for later after I have settled on a configuration where I won't be fiddling with the top area much.

    • @owenkilleen
      @owenkilleen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I see. Could you send a link to that frame? I have built my first 450, and have a storm 32 two axis gimbal, and i'd like to figure out the best way to mount the gimbal, the four plastic legs don't allow for this. Also, i have my battery sitting on the bottom plate, and the FC on top, i would've thought this make it have a more stable c.o.g., i may be wrong.

      This house is for the farm worker, and I wasn't working on the farm. I just got lucky that the farmer and his wife were working their asses off for a year or so to save money.
