I have flown all my aircrafts on this radio from quads to Trex 600. Love it and trust it 100%. I have been using the same radio now for over four years with only two small issues. After year two one of the gimble spring broke which I replaced with a spring from a crappy jumper radio. Also the ok button started to stick after many use and probably rust from having rain get into it. The price on these are so cheap that I ordered two just for parts. The range on these things are amazing and the programming are so simple. I have since turned mine into a 10ch and have not look back.
Thank you for the review ! I have that radio and already had a firmware hack and I can get 10 channels using ibus ! The "irritating alarm inactivity" with the firmware hack kicks in after 10m instead of the 2m by default ! The range is just awesome - more than 1km ! Despite being a 50€ radio, I'm happy with it ! I have this radio with that same receiver, I use it in PPM mode on my mini quad and i'm really happy with it, for the price it cant be beat, I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get into the hobby as a budget transmitter. Another nice review Bruce
Hello: Thanks Bruce for the review. This is my 2nd year on this radio, and they were no reviews what so ever on this thing back around December 2014 when I was looking to buy it. And mine came with the regular IA6 receiver. The IA6 is a "Park Flyer" receiver, which they state to be less than 500 Meters. And the IA6B is a "Full Range" receiver, which they state to be great than 500 Meters. And I have the IA6 in my Great Plane "Spectra" sailplane. And I haven't any problems with it all. And I am putting in the IA6B in my Sig Riser 100 that I am building now. I don't know if anyone has mentioned here. But to save any setting on this radio, you have to hold down the cancel button to save. And with the Turnigy brand, everything works the same. Bottom line for me is, it is a great little beginners radio and if you like me is on a set income. It is a nice purchase. And I have seen some high end radio's out at the club that had problems losing signals and I fly in the same place they do. And also, if you do some googling. You will find a all english version of the manual.
The i6 was my first radio and I love it. Still have it even after getting the i10. I liked how easy it was to set up a model. The small size I like. The i10 is bigger but really thin if not thinner than the i6. I have tried a few other radios and they feel like your trying to fly a plane holding a boom box. Way to big for me and I have big hands. No idea why most radios are as bulky as they are.
the flysky i6 with the fsia6b is what I use everyday and it really is a great radio the only thing and the most important thing I didn't hear you mention was the failsafe if u don't go into rx setup and turn. on failsafe and you pull lose an antenna in a crash and don't fix it correctly YOU WILL HAVE A FLY AWAY!!! trust me I know from experience and when your baby goes through the clouds. even if it does land at your feet there will be nothing left of her worth having so please tell ppl to set failsafe and make damn sure it is working I wouldn't wish what happened to me on my worst enemy thank you for reviewing this radio I always love hearing your opinion
I am actually really impressed with the next one up, the i6s. After coming back to RC after a 12-year break I picked one up as a toy BUT I can't believe the features I get for just $15-$20 more than the i6 (I see it in places for $61 US). A few of the highlights over the i6 are;- * 10 channels via sbus/ibus (with the 6 channel receiver no less) * 2X 3 position switches * 2X 2 position switches * 2 Push Buttons * 2 Varistor wheels The new firmware adds the missing model memories of the v1 firmware as well as a stack of other things. I live about 40-50k away from Bruce, perhaps I should pack it in a bag and send it over for him to have a look. Getting 10 channels out of a 6 channel receiver (standard, no mods) is just gravy.
I just received my I6S this morning and am still mulling it over. Bruce would absolutely love the innards in this one! No solder blobs. Wire looms that are nice and very tidy along with designed-in wire catches in the housing to route them. All connections are those mini jst type thingies (yes. it's an actual technical term ;-) It's absolutely tiny inside - I mean there's plenty of room but a lot of it is empty. Then again, it may just look that way since it's white plastic. But it doesn't do speak-n-spell - oh well ;-) Don't ask me to compare it with the original I6... I dunno which'd be better yet.
I have one, except the Turnigy-i6. They are the same, so I've been told. The Error% is their version of RSSI. You can flash it to have 10 channels. Pretty awesome transmitter for the price.
I orderd me this one too, and lovin it. Only a sin the manual is niet userfriendly. Once i figured uot how to programm it, it becomes better and better. I took it already for a flight and it handles great. Awesome radio!
Hi Bruce, about bloody time that you did a review on this unit, lol. As a newbie I bought one a good few months ago to get into quadcoptering and it feels pretty good to use, reliable, great battery life (even for those little cells) and pretty responsive to fly with. It only ever comes in a package with the FS-IA6 not the B version as you stated but that aside it is a really good 'First' TX for all RC hobbyists, the money I saved on not buying an expensive one I put into extra batteries, another quadcopter and increased the fun aspect no end, money saved meant a lot more fpv fun I am loving your channel and have been an avid viewer since getting into FPV, keep up your good work and kudos to you for helping me out with some of your technical vids and 'how to' info, just what I needed to know !
You have both options when placing an order. I got mine from Banggood with the B version. I wasn't sure which type to get at the time and after a bit of reading whilst waiting a week for delivery from China to the UK via free postage, am happy that it looks like I made the right choice. Looking forward to Bruce's other video once he has had time to get used to this bit of kit.
I have one of these. It's great to use and easy to set up. I use rechargeable AA's. I have fitted a charge socket so I can charge them from my battery charger without taking the batteries out.
hey glad to see this review! I bought this radio a while back to put together a minimalist miniquad travel kit. It really does feel tiny in person, but also solid feeling too with bare essentials. Have not actually flown with it yet though, but a couple guys in our multigp chapter use them
Great review as always Bruce, I have just started using this radio and find its a superb bit of kit for the money :) Even the gimbals feel nice when flying with it! Can't complain about that and I was quite surprised to see the diversity style antenna setup inside the radio! Having a thinner radio works nicely in the hands during flight too, it looks cheap but daym it works well!!
The AFHDS A2 system divides the 2.40-2.48Ghz spectrum into 140 channels and then use 16 of them. That's why you see 16 spikes on the oscilloscope. Don't know if the 16 channels are selected randomly per bind nor why it's done this way. (Maybe it's EU-regulations demanding "listen before talk"?!).
The FS-i6's big brother the FS-i10 is an amazing radio and goes for around $170. That's about the same as a Taranis but you can also get Sbus/CPPM capable receivers for it for around $10 which is less than half what an X4R-SB costs.
That Err1 on the bottom on the screen is the error rate. It's not rssi, it works a bit different if I'm correct, but it is indicating the signal strength just as well. Unfortunately it doesn't beeps at you when it goes high.
I got one of these as a backup radio for my TGY-i10........ I hate to say it, but after updating to the 10 channel firmware, the i10 is now used as a backup for this one !!!! My only criticism of the i6 is that those bloody standard stick nuts are thumb shredders. I quickly replaced them with "Umbrella style" caps...... Much nicer to use.
I got this and hooked up the rear connector to a mono audio jack and am using it with PicaSim and SmartPropoPlus as a cheap Flight Sim before I try the real thing. That could make a nice video as the only other one doesn't cover the soldering and testing.
***** Both original and the custom FW beep at low voltage allowing you to set the voltage treshold to start beeping. The original FW has only 10V max voltage limit, but custom firmware can go as high as you want.
For the price this radio is unbeatable. Of course not as good as radios costing several time more. I got two of these and have trainer cable as well works great!!!!
i just love this radio. only got once disconnected from my quad. receiver had one antenna missing and i flew pretty close to a cell tower. my radio beeps when getting low signal\big error %.
just received mine in the mail from Banggood , I'm new to flying fixed wing models , and for first attempt purchased a SonicModel 600mm mini racing wing. Had it set up in 10 minutes everything seems ok .........just waiting on some EPP foam glue to show up to assemble the wing ready to test fly it ............wish me luck
This is a very capable radio once you flash the modded firmware and use iBus(sBus basically). It has excellent range and reliability. I have had no issue at all with this transmitter. A few of your cons are also solved with the modded firmware. If you are on the fence about buying one of these then I'd say go for it. You won't find a better bang for your buck!
I actually like the AA battery option, since already got a high end radio, I use this for simulators because lipo ones run low and sometimes even run lower the 3v which destroy the battery from using the simulator for hours.

This is the Tx/Rx I'm currently using. IBUS is available in Cleanflight, Betaflight and even Baseflight I think. I have read that IBUS is actually faster than SBUS. There is no RSSI in the conventional sense. Instead, the Err1 reading goes from 0%-100%. 0% is no errors/good RSSI 100% lots of errors/bad RSSI. I guess it's a reverse RSSI in a way, but I believe proper RSSI is monitoring the resistance or voltage of the signal and not the amount of 'Errors' (whatever they class an error as).
I kept wanting to reach into the monitor and pull off the protective plastic covering the screen. Seeing that it was a loaner for this review, pulling off the slipcover might have been a little presumptuous!
I have one of these as a spare radio for my small gliders and the only thing i hate is the spring tension in those gimbals surely there's a way to make it a little tighter with not much modification!
Hi Spade The Red, If you want more tension in the gimbals, there's a Philips head screws on each & they adjust the tension. If they are "up to the top", then no more tension can be applied. To do so, you have to upgrade the small springs that are attached to each. It's not hard to perform, just a tad fiddly. A long set of tweasers will help. Turn the screws down to release the tension on the "new" springs & adjust to your required tension. HINT: Watch the video & when you see the gimbals & the actuators, stop the video. 5.40 to 6.00 & 6.40 to 6.45....just. The screws & adjuster are in the 2 sliders/pillars & show the small springs.
I actually don't mind these because they are cheap and good as a give away radio with certain planes for beginners , and I actually figured out a tension mod the other night while thinking about this that's even simpler " my main radio is a Jr 11x " what you do is take out the existing screws and get some longer ones , then put a small piece of plastic on the edge of the gimbals to stabilize the spring riser , ill make a 3d part on thingy-verse .. then the screws have a bit more tension and you can use the existing spring .. ill give it a go when i get home and throw down a video

Also, while sbus would be nice, ibus is supported on cleanflight, betaflight, and dronin (openpilot fork), and there are better digital outputs for receivers to copy anyway - sbus's inverted signal makes it a pain to use anywhere but on an f3 board, or flight controllers with inverters on one of the uarts.
This is the reason why this radio should be first and foremost in beginners' minds. If they are going to fly multirotors anyway. For fixed-wing, it doesn't matter so much.
Love my i6 and pretty much agree with the review. A nice feature is the simple menu accessible fail-safe setup. 4xAA is probably one of my favorite features. It runs for a loooong time on a set. Also worth adding that there are four different receivers to choose from: Ia6 (6ch pwm only, small, with diversity) Ia4b (4ch pwm, 6ch ppm, 10ch ibus, small, no diversity) Ia6b (6ch pwm/ppm, 10ch ibus, with diversity) Ia10b (like ia6b but 10ch). The telemetry add-ons for the b receivers are annoying but really cheap.
I use this combo as well. Telemetry works great when you hook it up to a free UART and configure it in a custom cleanflight rom (the changes are quite minimal to default cleanflight). Only problem is you need two UARTs if you want to use ibus sensors and receiver at the same time (which is hard to do on a naze32). There is some great work going on. I still need to do the 10ch firmware mod, I do need it somehow. I thought 6 would be plenty, but with all the modes you can configure in cleanflight... It is a must :) Decent review, could have used a bit more research into the modding side of this rx/tx combo.
Would love to see a review of the flysky th9x-b. Not much simple (and accurate) info readily available. Specifically in regards to failsafe and alternative modules for it. Love your work Bruce!
Great radio. I've had one for about a year. Does most everything I want except for RSSI. Hard to complain about for US$50. Fail safe is pretty hairy, though.
By transmitting alternately in vertical and horizontal polarization, the effects of a misaligned (cross-polarized) receiver antenna can be mitigated quite effectively. However, I haven't determined for sure that this is what's happening here.
If you hold both sticks down and left while turning it on (in mode 2 at least, presumably same for mode 1) you will see a 'factory' menu instead of the normal one. fwiw one of the menus in there ('RF frequency') lets you select 'left' or 'right' antenna. Not really sure what that does though. There is also a 'mode' setting which lets you choose 'carrier only', 'carrier + modul' and 'frequency scan'. Again, not really sure what they do but it's an interesting menu to poke around in.
I'm going get one for my tamiya mountain rider, I only need three channels as it won't get a lot of use, this will be ideal. I've seen cheap receiver on eBay for around £6 👍
Yeah, I agree. Bruce probably didn't notice it with this particular unit because it's almost new, but after a few months that switch somehow gets slippery like butter, I often have to use my fingernail under the edge to slide it.
Got a Turnigy branded i6: I like the AA-Battery-Bay, I'm using 2500mAh NiMH with it and they last literally forever. One charge last at least one complete flying-day and the "liftoff"-night after. You don't need to buy and care for another exotic lipo, just grab som NiMH-AA at the next supermarket...
Hello, Gread video! But one thing to mention: Most packeges of the FS-i6 don't include the FS-iA6B receiver, they only include the FS-iA6 receiver. This receiver can only handle PWM and only the 6 channels, that means, if u wanna upgrade it with the 10-channel-mod, you have to buy the other one.
Good point, and if you're using an APM flight controller you also need an ibus to ppm converter as the PPM out on the IA6B is only 6 channels, even with the mod. You cam make a converter easily snd cheaply enough with an Arduino mini or micro board.
Yeah, you are right, forgot to mention that one! Everyone who is interested in, just google "Arduino iBus to PPM" and you will find some tutorials and ready-for-use code. If you only have the iA6 receiver [like me], you can build a PWM to PPM converter with an Arduino, too. Just google "Arduino PWM to PPM". But you will still only have your 6 channels. My opinion: They could have easily added at least PPM-Output on the cheap iA6 receiver... But Money is everyting ;)
RC Noob Hello again, there's still one question left for me: Will the 10-channel-mod still work when using the FS-iA6 Receiver, not FS-iA6b? Of course, there will still be "only" 6 channels available.
Hi:-) That is a good question, and I would assume it does if you are using PWM, as PWM should still works, even when using ibus. I have both receivers, so I will try test the iA6 this weekend. I'll keep you posted!
The switch wires inside my old JR XP9303 and XP8103 transmitters are also soldered with no reinforcement. Frsky is the only company I've seen that actually puts heatshrink over the solder tabs on the switches and pots everyone else even high end brands just solders the wires on and calls it good. The crimped connectors on the daughterboards should be alright with the wire flexing and also highly resistant to vibration. It's too bad they didn't just use daughterboards and crimped connectors on the switches and pots too.
I'm doing my level best to not being a pain in the rudder here! You'll have guessed by now that I'm a beginner, and have had nothing at all to do with radio control systems - I'm a retired carpenter and make the occasional guitar. My latest investigations into the problem at hand seems to suggest that I should have plugged the line from the ESC into the receiver rather than the charge balance plug. Could this be the solution to my woes??
Plug a servo lead into "Ibus servo" port and you get Sbus!!! Hehe. In the betaflight menus you select ibus and the latency is pretty close to frsky sbus... Plugs in the same, same uarts etc...

The 4 in lipo part is for 3s balance charging, plugging that into your receiver could break it, the battery main lead plugs into the speed controller, and that has a battery elimination circuit or BEC, and so that three wire plug will power the reciever
Yes, but you'll need to provide 5V to the receiver. And if they are very high power servos and motors they may need more pore than can be run through the receiver and may want separate power supplies.
RCModelReviews do you have a devo 7 transmitter to do a walk throw showing how to set it up for quadcopters it comes factory set for helicopters lol and you dont get a booklet with it just a cd trying to understand it like reading a washing machine manual lol

really wish someone would make a Turnigy 9x "replacement" seems like the closest thing is the Taranis, and that easily costs like 3-4x what a base 9x costed. think I picked mine up for what, 35$? also looks to me like the best option for anyone looking for a serious radio is the Taranis X9D plus "SE". hope to pick one up soon unless something else comes along... just updated my 9X from ER9X to Open TX and so far I'm loving it even more...
The FlySky FS-i10 would be a good comparison to the Taranus since they're priced much closer, but it seems like anyone spending that much money just goes FrSky route, due to support.
Great review! I'm just a little bit worried by the spectrum analyzer results. I'm assuming that the newer I6X would give the same results? The FrSky output looked so much better to me and provides some peace-of-mind; especially with higher cost models. Do you know if the FrSky QX7 would yield the same output and band usage?

Hi Bruce, I have been using this Radio for 2 years now and get very good results even when flying FPV. I have upgraded it to 10 Ch's and replaced the Ant's with +5db whips. The radio does allow you to use RSSI or SNR it's a choice under "Sensors".. I have a question for you :) When the RX & TX are both side by side, what kind of RSSI value would you expect to get? I get 39db I would have thought I would get closer to 0db. Can this be calibrated ? ...Regards, Pete
None of these 2.4ghz transmitters are actually transmitters they are transceivers by the nature of the 2.4ghz system they use. Therefore using diversity should no harder on a tx than an RX. Also ibus has been supported in betaflight for about 4 months now works great for me on 2.6.1 uart3.

If you have two transmitters on the exact same channel transmitting at the same time you will have problems.. that's the whole reason these things use channel hopping. They are either doing (as pointed out in the video) interleaving by one packet out on antenna, next out the other or interleaving using multiple channels at the same time. Not as simple as sample both antennas and prefer the one with the best RSSI .. and even that isn't simple. The firmware in a big silicon vendor's WiFi chip that I used in a product messed up the diversity so that if it flipped over to an antenna that wasn't connected it would get stuck until power cycled.. if even a big mainstream vendor can mess it up imagine what Chinese RC vendors can come up with.
Hi Bruce, can you help me on how to add more switches, 2 & 3 position ones, to the FS-i6? I have one of this flashed with the 10ch software but now i missing 2 switches (or more, if possible), I´ve swop already the VAR to a FrSky 6 position knob for the gain of the 3 axis gyro and the VRB to a 3 position switch to change the flight modes in the gyro, the 2 left buttons (2 position ones) are used for the dual rates and motor reverser and the right side ones are used for the flaps (3 position one) and motor cut off (2 position), now if i want to add channel mixes, lights, candy drop... i still have free channels but no more buttons. Can you give me some help (guidance) in here in how to do it. Thanking you in advance. Sergio Lopes
With PPM the frame time is 20ms, with ibus it's 8ms. This is just the time between frames though, not the overall latency between stick movement and signal output. But still, you get 12ms faster response with ibus.
Hahha and whoever believes that a human being can perceive a difference of 12ms is nuts. Maybe one tenth of a second (that's 100ms) would be very slightly noticeable... but 12ms come on man :-) who are we Flash Gordon LOL

Is there a way that I could turn off the transmitter and just use this as a training controller hooked up to the PC - I do this, but I don't want it transmitting for no reason. I used a multi-meter from the positive battery wire to each terminal on the transmitter and I didn't find connectivity. Thoughts? thank you .

This "menu system" is about 25 years old. Based on Flat Files of the 1990's . I don't know what other Transmitter's look like but if they're not like our cell phones then they are grossly overpriced. I know we're stuck w/ what they'll give us but every bit of these radios could be contained in a small cellphone setup, & menu driven by a Windows OP System. I'm curious why they're not? But it looks like this is all they're allowing us to buy currently? peace

Everything started when I wanted to upgrade the 6ch radio to 10h, also returning to the original firmware the stock of the picth and roll did not work, I tried to invert the stick connectors to see if the problem was on the hardware but they both work. There will probably be a defective CIP. Thanks for the attention and excuse for my English but I use the translator. If you have more info you are welcome ....

Well, the version i used is "10ch_MOD_i6_Programmer_V1_5" and worked good for me, maybe your Tx is defected or you didn't flash it properly. My advise is for you to install the original software to see if everything works properly and the flash it again with the 10ch software.

the flysky i6 with the fsia6b is what I use everyday and it really is a great radio the only thing and the most important thing I didn't hear you mention was the failsafe if u don't go into rx setup and turn. on failsafe and you pull lose an antenna in a crash and don't fix it correctly YOU WILL HAVE A FLY AWAY!!! trust me I know from experience and when your baby goes through the clouds. even if it does land at your feet there will be nothing left of her worth having so please tell ppl to set failsafe and make damn sure it is working I wouldn't wish what happened to me on my worst enemy thank you for reviewing this radio I always love hearing your opinion

I have this one and I like it a lot. This hasn't caused any problem so far and it does its job faithfully.

I am actually really impressed with the next one up, the i6s.
After coming back to RC after a 12-year break I picked one up as a toy BUT I can't believe the features I get for just $15-$20 more than the i6 (I see it in places for $61 US). A few of the highlights over the i6 are;-
* 10 channels via sbus/ibus (with the 6 channel receiver no less)
* 2X 3 position switches
* 2X 2 position switches
* 2 Push Buttons
* 2 Varistor wheels
The new firmware adds the missing model memories of the v1 firmware as well as a stack of other things. I live about 40-50k away from Bruce, perhaps I should pack it in a bag and send it over for him to have a look.
Getting 10 channels out of a 6 channel receiver (standard, no mods) is just gravy.
I just received my I6S this morning and am still mulling it over. Bruce would absolutely love the innards in this one!
No solder blobs. Wire looms that are nice and very tidy along with designed-in wire catches in the housing to route them. All connections are those mini jst type thingies (yes. it's an actual technical term ;-)
It's absolutely tiny inside - I mean there's plenty of room but a lot of it is empty. Then again, it may just look that way since it's white plastic. But it doesn't do speak-n-spell - oh well ;-)
Don't ask me to compare it with the original I6... I dunno which'd be better yet.
I have one, except the Turnigy-i6. They are the same, so I've been told. The Error% is their version of RSSI. You can flash it to have 10 channels. Pretty awesome transmitter for the price.
I orderd me this one too, and lovin it. Only a sin the manual is niet userfriendly.
Once i figured uot how to programm it, it becomes better and better.
I took it already for a flight and it handles great.

Hi Bruce, about bloody time that you did a review on this unit, lol. As a newbie I bought one a good few months ago to get into quadcoptering and it feels pretty good to use, reliable, great battery life (even for those little cells) and pretty responsive to fly with. It only ever comes in a package with the FS-IA6 not the B version as you stated but that aside it is a really good 'First' TX for all RC hobbyists, the money I saved on not buying an expensive one I put into extra batteries, another quadcopter and increased the fun aspect no end, money saved meant a lot more fpv fun
I am loving your channel and have been an avid viewer since getting into FPV, keep up your good work and kudos to you for helping me out with some of your technical vids and 'how to' info, just what I needed to know !
You have both options when placing an order. I got mine from Banggood with the B version. I wasn't sure which type to get at the time and after a bit of reading whilst waiting a week for delivery from China to the UK via free postage, am happy that it looks like I made the right choice. Looking forward to Bruce's other video once he has had time to get used to this bit of kit.
I have one of these. It's great to use and easy to set up. I use rechargeable AA's. I have fitted a charge socket so I can charge them from my battery charger without taking the batteries out.
hey glad to see this review! I bought this radio a while back to put together a minimalist miniquad travel kit. It really does feel tiny in person, but also solid feeling too with bare essentials. Have not actually flown with it yet though, but a couple guys in our multigp chapter use them
Great review as always Bruce, I have just started using this radio and find its a superb bit of kit for the money :) Even the gimbals feel nice when flying with it! Can't complain about that and I was quite surprised to see the diversity style antenna setup inside the radio! Having a thinner radio works nicely in the hands during flight too, it looks cheap but daym it works well!!
These are a great entry level radios. I would recommend to everyone but get the 10 channel version.

You'll love it. It was my first "real" radio system as well, and I use it on my Sailplane, my quad, and my car!
The AFHDS A2 system divides the 2.40-2.48Ghz spectrum into 140 channels and then use 16 of them. That's why you see 16 spikes on the oscilloscope. Don't know if the 16 channels are selected randomly per bind nor why it's done this way. (Maybe it's EU-regulations demanding "listen before talk"?!).
The FS-i6's big brother the FS-i10 is an amazing radio and goes for around $170. That's about the same as a Taranis but you can also get Sbus/CPPM capable receivers for it for around $10 which is less than half what an X4R-SB costs.

That Err1 on the bottom on the screen is the error rate. It's not rssi, it works a bit different if I'm correct, but it is indicating the signal strength just as well. Unfortunately it doesn't beeps at you when it goes high.

I got one of these as a backup radio for my TGY-i10........ I hate to say it, but after updating to the 10 channel firmware, the i10 is now used as a backup for this one !!!!
My only criticism of the i6 is that those bloody standard stick nuts are thumb shredders. I quickly replaced them with "Umbrella style" caps...... Much nicer to use.
I got this and hooked up the rear connector to a mono audio jack and am using it with PicaSim and SmartPropoPlus as a cheap Flight Sim before I try the real thing.
That could make a nice video as the only other one doesn't cover the soldering and testing.

For the price this radio is unbeatable. Of course not as good as radios costing several time more. I got two of these and have trainer cable as well works great!!!!

i just love this radio. only got once disconnected from my quad. receiver had one antenna missing and i flew pretty close to a cell tower. my radio beeps when getting low signal\big error %.
just received mine in the mail from Banggood , I'm new to flying fixed wing models , and for first attempt purchased a SonicModel 600mm mini racing wing. Had it set up in 10 minutes everything seems ok .........just waiting on some EPP foam glue to show up to assemble the wing ready to test fly it ............wish me luck
Don't remember if it's in the manual, but to save settings on this transmitter you have to hold "Cancel" button, which is a bit unintuituve.

This is a very capable radio once you flash the modded firmware and use iBus(sBus basically). It has excellent range and reliability. I have had no issue at all with this transmitter. A few of your cons are also solved with the modded firmware. If you are on the fence about buying one of these then I'd say go for it. You won't find a better bang for your buck!
I actually like the AA battery option, since already got a high end radio, I use this for simulators because lipo ones run low and sometimes even run lower the 3v which destroy the battery from using the simulator for hours.

This is the Tx/Rx I'm currently using. IBUS is available in Cleanflight, Betaflight and even Baseflight I think. I have read that IBUS is actually faster than SBUS. There is no RSSI in the conventional sense. Instead, the Err1 reading goes from 0%-100%. 0% is no errors/good RSSI 100% lots of errors/bad RSSI. I guess it's a reverse RSSI in a way, but I believe proper RSSI is monitoring the resistance or voltage of the signal and not the amount of 'Errors' (whatever they class an error as).
I kept wanting to reach into the monitor and pull off the protective plastic covering the screen.
Seeing that it was a loaner for this review, pulling off the slipcover might have been a little presumptuous!
I have one of these as a spare radio for my small gliders and the only thing i hate is the spring tension in those gimbals surely there's a way to make it a little tighter with not much modification!

If you want more tension in the gimbals, there's a Philips head screws on each & they adjust the tension.
If they are "up to the top", then no more tension can be applied.
To do so, you have to upgrade the small springs that are attached to each.
It's not hard to perform, just a tad fiddly.
A long set of tweasers will help. Turn the screws down to release the tension on the "new" springs & adjust to your required tension.
HINT: Watch the video & when you see the gimbals & the actuators, stop the video.
5.40 to 6.00 & 6.40 to 6.45....just.
The screws & adjuster are in the 2 sliders/pillars & show the small springs.
I actually don't mind these because they are cheap and good as a give away radio with certain planes for beginners , and I actually figured out a tension mod the other night while thinking about this that's even simpler " my main radio is a Jr 11x "
what you do is take out the existing screws and get some longer ones , then put a small piece of plastic on the edge of the gimbals to stabilize the spring riser , ill make a 3d part on thingy-verse ..
then the screws have a bit more tension and you can use the existing spring ..
ill give it a go when i get home and throw down a video

Also, while sbus would be nice, ibus is supported on cleanflight, betaflight, and dronin (openpilot fork), and there are better digital outputs for receivers to copy anyway - sbus's inverted signal makes it a pain to use anywhere but on an f3 board, or flight controllers with inverters on one of the uarts.
betaflight supports ibus which is like sbus in terms of latency.
And cleanflight...
even better!
And it doesn't require inversion like sbus does...
This is the reason why this radio should be first and foremost in beginners' minds. If they are going to fly multirotors anyway. For fixed-wing, it doesn't matter so much.

Love my i6 and pretty much agree with the review. A nice feature is the simple menu accessible fail-safe setup.
4xAA is probably one of my favorite features. It runs for a loooong time on a set.
Also worth adding that there are four different receivers to choose from:
Ia6 (6ch pwm only, small, with diversity)
Ia4b (4ch pwm, 6ch ppm, 10ch ibus, small, no diversity)
Ia6b (6ch pwm/ppm, 10ch ibus, with diversity)
Ia10b (like ia6b but 10ch).
The telemetry add-ons for the b receivers are annoying but really cheap.
Agreed, battery life is NOT a problem, I use rechargeables, great life, carry a spare set. No problem with AA's.

I use this combo as well. Telemetry works great when you hook it up to a free UART and configure it in a custom cleanflight rom (the changes are quite minimal to default cleanflight). Only problem is you need two UARTs if you want to use ibus sensors and receiver at the same time (which is hard to do on a naze32).
There is some great work going on. I still need to do the 10ch firmware mod, I do need it somehow. I thought 6 would be plenty, but with all the modes you can configure in cleanflight... It is a must :)

Great radio. I've had one for about a year. Does most everything I want except for RSSI. Hard to complain about for US$50. Fail safe is pretty hairy, though.
The two antennas in the TX could be for the telemetry and the transmission? It doesn't make sense a diversity in the transmitter...
By transmitting alternately in vertical and horizontal polarization, the effects of a misaligned (cross-polarized) receiver antenna can be mitigated quite effectively. However, I haven't determined for sure that this is what's happening here.
If you hold both sticks down and left while turning it on (in mode 2 at least, presumably same for mode 1) you will see a 'factory' menu instead of the normal one. fwiw one of the menus in there ('RF frequency') lets you select 'left' or 'right' antenna. Not really sure what that does though. There is also a 'mode' setting which lets you choose 'carrier only', 'carrier + modul' and 'frequency scan'. Again, not really sure what they do but it's an interesting menu to poke around in.
I'm going get one for my tamiya mountain rider, I only need three channels as it won't get a lot of use, this will be ideal. I've seen cheap receiver on eBay for around £6 👍

Yeah, I agree. Bruce probably didn't notice it with this particular unit because it's almost new, but after a few months that switch somehow gets slippery like butter, I often have to use my fingernail under the edge to slide it.
I got this radio but with the FS-iA6 reciever. Range is only about 300-400 m max. Will I get better range with the FS-iA6B?

Got a Turnigy branded i6: I like the AA-Battery-Bay, I'm using 2500mAh NiMH with it and they last literally forever. One charge last at least one complete flying-day and the "liftoff"-night after. You don't need to buy and care for another exotic lipo, just grab som NiMH-AA at the next supermarket...

Gread video! But one thing to mention: Most packeges of the FS-i6 don't include the FS-iA6B receiver, they only include the FS-iA6 receiver.
This receiver can only handle PWM and only the 6 channels, that means, if u wanna upgrade it with the 10-channel-mod, you have to buy the other one.
Good point, and if you're using an APM flight controller you also need an ibus to ppm converter as the PPM out on the IA6B is only 6 channels, even with the mod. You cam make a converter easily snd cheaply enough with an Arduino mini or micro board.

Everyone who is interested in, just google "Arduino iBus to PPM" and you will find some tutorials and ready-for-use code.
If you only have the iA6 receiver [like me], you can build a PWM to PPM converter with an Arduino, too. Just google "Arduino PWM to PPM".
But you will still only have your 6 channels.
My opinion: They could have easily added at least PPM-Output on the cheap iA6 receiver...

That is a good question, and I would assume it does if you are using PWM, as PWM should still works, even when using ibus. I have both receivers, so I will try test the iA6 this weekend. I'll keep you posted!
The switch wires inside my old JR XP9303 and XP8103 transmitters are also soldered with no reinforcement. Frsky is the only company I've seen that actually puts heatshrink over the solder tabs on the switches and pots everyone else even high end brands just solders the wires on and calls it good. The crimped connectors on the daughterboards should be alright with the wire flexing and also highly resistant to vibration. It's too bad they didn't just use daughterboards and crimped connectors on the switches and pots too.
I'm doing my level best to not being a pain in the rudder here! You'll have guessed by now that I'm a beginner, and have had nothing at all to do with radio control systems - I'm a retired carpenter and make the occasional guitar. My latest investigations into the problem at hand seems to suggest that I should have plugged the line from the ESC into the receiver rather than the charge balance plug. Could this be the solution to my woes??

Plug a servo lead into "Ibus servo" port and you get Sbus!!! Hehe. In the betaflight menus you select ibus and the latency is pretty close to frsky sbus... Plugs in the same, same uarts etc...

The 4 in lipo part is for 3s balance charging, plugging that into your receiver could break it, the battery main lead plugs into the speed controller, and that has a battery elimination circuit or BEC, and so that three wire plug will power the reciever

Yes, but you'll need to provide 5V to the receiver. And if they are very high power servos and motors they may need more pore than can be run through the receiver and may want separate power supplies.
The 2 antennas might be to separate control and telemetry channels.

The FlySky FS-i10 would be a good comparison to the Taranus since they're priced much closer, but it seems like anyone spending that much money just goes FrSky route, due to support.
Great review! I'm just a little bit worried by the spectrum analyzer results. I'm assuming that the newer I6X would give the same results? The FrSky output looked so much better to me and provides some peace-of-mind; especially with higher cost models. Do you know if the FrSky QX7 would yield the same output and band usage?

Hi Bruce, I have been using this Radio for 2 years now and get very good results even when flying FPV. I have upgraded it to 10 Ch's and replaced the Ant's with +5db whips. The radio does allow you to use RSSI or SNR it's a choice under "Sensors".. I have a question for you :) When the RX & TX are both side by side, what kind of RSSI value would you expect to get? I get 39db I would have thought I would get closer to 0db. Can this be calibrated ? ...Regards, Pete

None of these 2.4ghz transmitters are actually transmitters they are transceivers by the nature of the 2.4ghz system they use. Therefore using diversity should no harder on a tx than an RX.
Also ibus has been supported in betaflight for about 4 months now works great for me on 2.6.1 uart3.

If you have two transmitters on the exact same channel transmitting at the same time you will have problems.. that's the whole reason these things use channel hopping.
They are either doing (as pointed out in the video) interleaving by one packet out on antenna, next out the other or interleaving using multiple channels at the same time. Not as simple as sample both antennas and prefer the one with the best RSSI .. and even that isn't simple. The firmware in a big silicon vendor's WiFi chip that I used in a product messed up the diversity so that if it flipped over to an antenna that wasn't connected it would get stuck until power cycled.. if even a big mainstream vendor can mess it up imagine what Chinese RC vendors can come up with.
Hi Bruce, can you help me on how to add more switches, 2 & 3 position ones, to the FS-i6?
I have one of this flashed with the 10ch software but now i missing 2 switches (or more, if possible), I´ve swop already the VAR to a FrSky 6 position knob for the gain of the 3 axis gyro and the VRB to a 3 position switch to change the flight modes in the gyro, the 2 left buttons (2 position ones) are used for the dual rates and motor reverser and the right side ones are used for the flaps (3 position one) and motor cut off (2 position), now if i want to add channel mixes, lights, candy drop... i still have free channels but no more buttons.
Can you give me some help (guidance) in here in how to do it.

Does this radio still have the 20ms latency like the FS-T6? Or perhaps the iBus protocol helps in that regard?
With PPM the frame time is 20ms, with ibus it's 8ms. This is just the time between frames though, not the overall latency between stick movement and signal output. But still, you get 12ms faster response with ibus.
Hahha and whoever believes that a human being can perceive a difference of 12ms is nuts. Maybe one tenth of a second (that's 100ms) would be very slightly noticeable... but 12ms come on man :-) who are we Flash Gordon LOL

Thank you for this video. Is there a way that I could turn off the transmitter and just use this as a training controller hooked up to the PC - I do this, but I don't want it transmitting for no reason. I used a multi-meter from the positive battery wire to each terminal on the transmitter and I didn't find connectivity. Thoughts? thank you .

Take off the props first, and then push both sticks inwards, the left stick bottom right, the right stick bottom left.
+AMA just the left stick to SW position
Make sure the setting in cli matches ppm or pwm. Are all stick working in receiver tab in cleanflight. If not you in wrong mode.

Everything started when I wanted to upgrade the 6ch radio to 10h, also returning to the original firmware the stock of the picth and roll did not work, I tried to invert the stick connectors to see if the problem was on the hardware but they both work. There will probably be a defective CIP. Thanks for the attention and excuse for my English but I use the translator. If you have more info you are welcome ....
Olá Mario, o que posso fazer é enviar os ficheiros que usei para o meu FS-i6 que está a funcionar com os 10ch, telemetria para baterias Lipo até 6S e alarme para 1 min.

Well, the version i used is "10ch_MOD_i6_Programmer_V1_5" and worked good for me, maybe your Tx is defected or you didn't flash it properly.
My advise is for you to install the original software to see if everything works properly and the flash it again with the 10ch software.
