Absolutely right. He was Pegasus. He was perfection. He was a gift from the gods and no horse can ever replace him, live up to him or stand on the same plane.

Red, I loved you back in 1972 when I first saw you. I loved you in 1973 during all your races. Loved you while following as many of your descendants as possible. I will love you forever and hope that if there is a heaven and I'm fortunate enough to go, I will see you there. ❤

"Secretariat was such an incredible animal." Mam, Secretariat was NO animal. He was NO horse. He was Pegasus gleaming in gold who, at the break of day, carried the sun, the only equal to himself being made of similar stuff. Slipping in his gallop riding the dawn, broke open a cloud, at the edge of the Godly realm, for one sliver of eternity. And as gods do, gave us mortals pause, in the blinding light of what was His Heaven, and only home.

Holy moly, that was wonderful. Can’t be more true, he was Pegasus on earth. Changed it forever.

I had recently gotten out of the Navy, and My Uncle, Father Richard Mattie was stationed in Governor's Island in New York City. He was the Catholic Chaplain at that Coast Guard Installation. It was His first Duty Station, Just recently out of Officer Candidate School. I was still unemployed, and living off My Separation Pay , and unemployment pay from the Navy. My Uncle asked me to come out to visit Him on Governor's Island. It was The first Two weeks of June 1973. I new Secretariat had won The Kentucky Derby and The Preakness, being a Big Horse 🐎 Racing Fan. But I didn't realize that the Belmont was that close to Governor's Island. And I also didn't realize that I could take the Ferry from Governor's Island to the City and hop on the Subway at South Ferry, and Canal St. Out to Belmont Park. When I found out I could actually do that And then reading the New York Daily News that The Belmont Stakes was that Saturday, (I Got there on Wednesday,) I was besides myself. I remember that I got out there Two hours before the Races starter that Day. Little did I know what I was about to witness that Day. If I did I would have bought an extra $2.00 Win Ticket on Secretariat that Day. What I remember most When they came Down the Stretch That Day Secretariat was Halfway Down the Stretch and the other Horses were Nowhere in Sight!! The Noise was Deafining, Grown Men, Seasoned Horse Players were Crying. One Man had actually dropped to His Knees, hanging on to the fence with Tears streaming Down His Face. I'll never forget The Sounds And Sights from That Day, Especially when I Heard, "HE IS MOVING LIKE A TREMENDOUS MACHINE"!! God Bless Secretariat. R.I.P
