4 years ago I saw a used H-D 96 cubic in Deluxe advertised locally. I contacted the seller, but he was rather unfriendly to speak to, hence nothing happened. A week later, I found the H-D I now own and the seller was the nicest bloke. I remember the moment I told my wife: "I've changed my mind, I'm not going to get that Deluxe... but I've found a better bike that's $2,000 less!". Those words didn't go down too well. 4 years later and I'm a 'rusted-on' H-D rider!
Hey Ammon, You’re right with used bikes so many people want too much for their bike. After all you can buy a 2018 Low Rider with 38k on it for $15,996 and people are wanting $17,000 for a twin cam with the same amount of K’s. I also have seen EVO’s for between $12,000 and $14,000 with between 70k and 45k on the clock.
Great topic , I know when comes time for my next bike and my first Harley I’ll be asking you for advice !! For Sarah to have you under the thumb she’s need a step Ladder !! Looking forward to following this journey !
20 odd years ago, i Looked at an Evo with a 'claimed' 75k k'ms onnit.. Everything was modified, even the frame had a lovely pearl paint job, I took it for a ride and it was a real hot-rod..The then current owner told me the name of the prior owner ( which I recognised ) so I went down the local bikeshop and mentioned the details.. They couldn't stop Laughing, sure it may have 75 odd 1000k's onnit but that was on that current engine, and it was the 3rd engine in that frame.. Buyer Beware !
I spent a few months looking recently and soon decided that motorbike sellers either have no idea how to effectively market a bike and deal with buyers, or they were being forced to sell by their Mrs and put a crappy ad so that it would never sell.
The hardest part of selling and buying private is the emotional connection to the item. Plus the seller thinking they can recoup their investment of added parts or “upgrades”.
Good video, looking forward to part 2 of video,Thanks for sending old not dead patch my old man had it sewn on the next day after it arrived in post, stay upright stay safe.
Old bikes from private sellers are different than buying bikes from dealer I think in that private sellers of older bikes have probably had them awhile and made a connection with that bike and selling it might be a very hard decision for them so when looking at their bikes you more so just got to decide what is that bike worth to you because if their not budging on price that’s what that bikes worth to them as opposed to a dealer who has no connection to the bike their selling. I bought my old bike off of a older chap that was giving up riding due to his age and when I started getting ready to leave with it I could see the tears coming out his eyes knowing he was giving up his pride and joy so I never felt bad how much I spent on it cause I know what it was worth to him and what it’s worth to me
Very true in regard to attachment from the seller. To get a good price the buyer needs to detach from the potential buy and be open to other options .. like the next bike that's the same or better

Solid advice mate. It took me 18 months of searching before I found my current bike. Every one I saw was $10-$12k+ (mid-high end redbook valuation for a 2010 C-109R) for either high kays, shit condition, or both. I finally found mine as it was the first one I'd seen for under $10k, so I figured it was worth checking out. It was a trip to the central coast from Sydney, but negotiations, like yours, just flowed. Picked it up for $7k, and got a lift back up there the next day to pick it up. Even with what I've changed/updated, I still haven't put $10k into it, but have put nearly 10k on the clock since Feb. Patience is the key though. The right bike will show up at the right price. You can't force it. ps. Love the banter between you, and your Mrs. 🤘
Old ads happen. Although sometimes...I found an ad for a99 Road King and when I rang the bloke forgot he had advertised it 2 years earlier. Dropped the price 4k straight up which I got it for but did get caught out with the carby on it, new carby and its great. Did GOR ANZAC Day this year with my daughter on the back. Got it for 10K.
Those things sound great with a set of SE slip-ons and a SE air cleaner. But not for me. I just can't stand all the vibration coming from a Softail evo and given my style of riding, I'd be leaving chrome or bits of the floorboard bracket behind on every bend.
Yah, that’s in America I’ll bet. Australia is a whole different ball game. Let me illustrate; Back in about 2012, I needed to replace the factory shocks on my 1997 Sportster. I hunted for decent items for sale here in Oz and found that a pair of Progressive shocks would set me back $1100 plus GST, which worked out to just over $1200. I’d have to pay upfront and wait 6-8 WEEKS!!! For them to be delivered to the shop in Queensland, then pay freight from there to Melbourne (roughly equivalent to NYC to Florida) This ended up costing nearly THIRTEEN hundred dollars, so I went looking for the same shocks online. JP Cycles had them for a great price and I bought them for a grand total of $350 (Australian dollars) total cost. Freight included. They arrived at my door less than a week after I paid for them. I’m sure you can see the difference. At that time, a brand new Sportster cost about $14000 on the road, while the US price was around 5k according to a friend over there. Then you have to factor in the conversion rate of US dollars to Aussie dollars, but that’s getting too detailed. The prices here are still going to be significantly higher than in the USA, that’s just the way it is. I haven’t bought a bike from a dealer since 1977 and I tend to keep them around for a few years at least. Private deals are cheaper, but Aymen is right, the asking prices are often too high. When I bought my Sporty, I bought it from a mate and I knew that bike very well. I paid 7k for it. After 15 years I have done a few things, like a Hammer 1275 big bore kit and some mods to make it what I wanted. Total outlay including purchase price is just over 12k and that’s pretty reasonable given the current dealer prices for similar bikes. I don’t have all the later tech crap, but I do have the bike I WANT and I’m not planning on selling it ever. At 68 years old, I can’t see myself needing one. It’s NOTHING like the stock 883 it once was and I made it that way myself. No work was farmed out. Sure there’s always greener pastures, but I know that bike inside out and it does everything I want it to, how I want it to and that’s all I need. Whatever you ride should be the bike you WANT to ride, imho. I could probably get what I’ve put into it, but then another bike would just have to be modified to be what I want and then, what’s the point of going through all that again?
Great insightful vid. Yes go with the flow. You learn a lot about the “history” of the bike by the seller and their attitude etc. I was looking at Fat Boy Ss and there are a few. Need to look hard and take a lot into consideration.

Just following on a previous comment - looking forward to part two. I think a sport or hobby that is perhaps perceived as a "toy" or "luxury item" getting a quality -mechanical- machine is actually going to hold value might be a good idea. Are Evo's are the new Pan Head.....??? I finally fessed up to the R18 to my other 1/2, she was not quite as charitable as yours re a second ride. Similar side profile between them.....but mine is missing the smile.....😕. Might be the bike....?? (or not). R18 certainly not going to hold value like the Evo machine.
Hey i got an old heritage 95 evo , dont believe the speedo on any analogue speedometer as they only went to 99,999 km then they clock over to 00000.0 this is why there is alot of low km evos mine says it has 19,000 but is really 119,000 .
