@@toct2902 It is possible. He developed the rest of his game well after his draft year, which is promising for his future going forward. I see the NTDP all the time, so I’m very familiar with those guys. The only thing I think is a little disingenuous is to say that other GM’s will instantly regret their picks all of a sudden (original post more than your own). There’s still a chance any of these guys become a superstar or a bust for some reason (most likely an injury when you’re talking that level of prospect), but it’s looking like that class just really was as strong as people thought it was. I have a couple people who I think probably should have gone down the list, and my initial assessment was slightly higher than where Caulfield ended up - however sometimes it comes down to team fit as well, and MTL was definitely a good landing spot for him. Hughes for example I have faith with still become an elite talent in the league, but I think the Devils did him a huge disservice by throwing him to the wolves and expecting him to be a top 6 NHL forward straight out of the USHL. If Caulfield was with them, and in his position would he have looked the same? Probably not. You could take any of those players and do that at any position - my point isn’t so much whether or not he should be the top pick, just that certain teams get lucky and get a top skill player who fits at a position of need. MTL had some good young playmakers like Suzuki and Kotkaniemi - getting an elite sniper would have been enough for them even if he didn’t develop the rest of his game. Other teams likely wouldn’t have had the patience to put him in the best position to succeed, or have the pieces to help him look so good this quickly. I know for sure my hometown Red Wings don’t (though I’m happy with the direction they’re headed) lmao. I said the same thing when everyone thought we should get Quinn Hughes. Saying size doesn't matter is akin to drafting based solely on stats, you can only take a small guy when you have a team that's on the larger size to make sure it wont be used against the player. Size may never hold this kid up, he certainly looks like a superstar already, but look at some of the beasts he is surrounded by, look at how rough the playoffs have been. It takes a special player to ignore all that when drafting a player. As a Habs fan, I was pretty happy when the habs got him but I wasn't thinking in the slightest that he would be this impactful this early. His impact is also down to how the Habs are using him, keep his minutes low, his energy is through the roof every time he hits the ice, and with that much energy reserve and that talent, well that's something fun to watch :) Those 3 kids for the habs have been so good this year, the future don't look so bad does it.
They literally said this about Wayne Gretzky. He's too small. Then they said it about Theoren Fleury. He's even smaller than Caufield, and that was a tougher time. And then look at St Louis too.
This was the only draft I've ever watched, and I remember being excited that Montreal managed to get a top 10 pick at 15th. As a fellow small guy, I was definitely happy to see how well he's doing. ...Also VERY happy as a Habs fan.
I think in a redraft he deserved top 3 along with Seider and still arguably Hughes or Dach. Argue whichever order you like, potentially including team needs at the time. I think top 5 is these 4 plus Zegras.
He's got quick feet. Guy moves like a bunny rabbit. That move he pulled going around McNabb was a thing of beauty and finesse. With skills like that at 20, it's only going to get better.
The 2019 draft was just so stacked. Vasily Podkolzin becomes eligible to play in the NHL (after) this year. Matt Boldy just got signed, Spencer Knight's ridiculous. Caufield deserved a higher pick, definitely a steal. But he's also a steal that was given the time to develop, just like Alex Debrincat. That makes a massive difference.
I’m a huge Habs fan and I’m old enough to have seen them win in 86’ (I was in grade 7) and again in 93’ during my first year of university. This has been a great run thus far and Cole has looked amazing. The sky is the limit for that kid. It appears Tampa is too much for them with over 25 million in salary difference between the two teams. But that’s okay, it’s still been an exciting ride. Go Habs
dude OhNyquist.. thank you thank you. Someone finally says what I have been preaching since Caulfields draft......Yes Jack Hughes was helped bigtime playing with Cole. Hughes will be a good NHLer but go back and watch their tape in USDP....Caulfield will have the better career mark my words
Plus, Caufield has developed some serious chemistry with Suzuki (the guy is absolutely insane as a center and can score as well) and has playmaking abilities of his own. He's gonna be fine. If Hughes can find the "Cole Caufield" of the New Jersey Devils, then he'll fare well. If he doesn't... well, big loss.
I know you mentioned it briefly but man the Debrincat & Caufield comparison is eerily similar. Both American right handed shots who are good on both ends of the ice, Both highly skilled short guys who were criticized for playing with better players (McDavid, Strome ; Hughes, Turcotte)
Canadiens have faith youth will continue to grow in playoff spotlight When you’re as young as Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield, every day represents an opportunity. Part of the reason why the Montreal Canadiens have managed to play into the summer is the life those players have brought to the lineup, and the way they’ve been able to grow through challenges during this extended playoff run. The Stanley Cup Final arrived with the biggest challenge yet: A regular matchup with the Nikita Kucherov-Brayden Point-Ondrej Palat line, at least for the games here at Amalie Arena where Lightning head coach Jon Cooper controls last change.
3:07 I think both Suzuki and Caulfield were healthy scratches if im not mistaken, I had heard though it was to give them a sense of the atmosphere of playoff hockey.
Caufield is just what the NHL needs right now. Many of the game’s superstars are beginning to age, today’s superstars haven’t been able to produce a good cup run. Cole is lighting it up right now and is in the Stanley Cup final. If they were to win and Cole scored the GWG in game 6 or 7, that would be epic. Shades of Patrick Kane in 2010. Best of luck to them.
When this draft happened I was working and told my coworkers "10 GMs will be kicking themselves when this kid gets to the NHL." I stand by that. Detroit should've taken him 6th, imo. In a re-draft he's top 5 for sure
@@Al_Andaloussi85 Fair point, I'll readily admit that I don't trust defensive prospects to pan out as consistently which is why I had said Detroit should take Caufield at the time. I also think that seider's play in Sweden warrants moving up if there was a re-draft as well
Anybody who has played high level sports can tell you that short guys are tough to play against. They're so evasive and agile. The one's that make it far always have ridiculous talent
I'm a Leafs fan and I'm glad the Habs are doing so well. Most Leafs fans are angry because the Leafs didn't perform how they should have, not because Montreal wasn't a good team. I watched the games and knew that the nonsense about the north division was total crap. Enjoy Habs fans, all the best. Even with the way the top players played it was a great series.
The Habs have never really been afraid to draft small. Henri Richard was also 5'7, as was Yvan Cournoyer. They would have drafted Denis Savard, if they hadn't been able to resist drafting instead "the Habs draft pick no Habs fan will utter".
For all intents and purposes the Habs have already won the cup, they beat an inter- conference team in the postseason. Capped by the fact they eliminated 3 teams that EVERY pundit predicted they would lose to. Doesn't matter what happens in this 'Cup Final', the Habs have already earned the right to be called champions 🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕
Love the Danault (and now, Caufield) tribute pizza slices - They've already won most persuasive impression of ultimate effort, execution and overcoming adversity/disdain/disrespect by a team in these playoffs. Now make your final argument for non-Superstar team superiority - Go Habs!
Yup, as a Hab fan, I have absolutely nothing to complain about. I expected nothing this year, and I haven't been this pumped about the future talent in a long long time. Primeau, Fleury, Poehling, have yet to blossom, but Suzuki, Caufield, and Evans, should keep getting better. I was really bummed about Mete, but I wasn't surprised to lose him on waivers. It pains me to see Sergachev playing for TB, I thought the Habs would have learned their lesson after the Gomez for Ryan McDonah debacle, but apparently not.

as an avs fan we were one pick away but i’m glad we got newhook he only dropped because of the league he played in and depending on how good caufield becomes idk if they would be able to afford him anyway
I know I'm biased, but I'd like to give Podkolzin a year or 2 at the NHL level before deciding he's better or worse. The Lightning strike me as having more firepower than the Islanders so they would be tougher to play against in my eyes.
Obviously Edmonton Vancouver Minnesota and Arizona would like to have picked him but if I look at the others above him these guys are future stars in the league
Also to remember that Anaheim kept Zegras limited to only a certain number of games to have leverage for future contract negotiation. Next year he will no doubt be a Full timer that iIm sure will be in the running for Calder.

Seeing the Canadians head to the finals as the 8th seed reminds me when the kings did this back in 2012. Nothing but respect right now Montreal
18th seed actually i think, they were last out of every qualifying team
@@phatstackz you mean 16th
Yeah two teams that finished with more points than them missed the playoffs (Stars and Rangers)
@@helloyoutub1 18th overall in the standings
@@helloyoutub1 two teams had more points then em that didnt make it
Yes he went first, but Kane's size was always mentioned in general before the NHL...
I am excited to see Caufield develop! I can’t imagine how good he will be in a few years!
I think in a redraft he deserved top 3 along with Seider and still arguably Hughes or Dach. Argue whichever order you like, potentially including team needs at the time. I think top 5 is these 4 plus Zegras.
I would also have Cozens, Byram, and Turcotte in the conversation
@@jonahfossay740 Turcotte hasn’t played an NHL game yet so he’s still a question mark. Didn’t really light up the AHL this season.
Way too soon to decide, definitely top 10 though.
Nope, I love Caufield but definitely not top 3 or top 5.
@@btgkg9639 .66 PPG in the 2nd best league in the world in his first pro season is p good imo
He's got quick feet. Guy moves like a bunny rabbit. That move he pulled going around McNabb was a thing of beauty and finesse. With skills like that at 20, it's only going to get better.
I wish Detroit would have taken him but Yzerman looks like a genious and Seider is the real deal after getting Defenseman of the year in the Del
SHL defenseman of the year. DEL was 2 years ago now.
@@jonathandwilliams2885 my bad he couldn't play del and was shifted to SHL, thank you
@@Flesson19 so a 2 straight defenseman oty awards in 2 different leagues. Damn. Kids gonna pop off and I’m ready for it
Stanley Cup Playoff pressure? What's that, asks Caufield. Caufield played with supreme confidence in the Vegas series.
Goes to show that they should never overlook a player because of their size! I’m happy to see smaller players thrive in the NHL!
If Suzuki keeps on feeding him like he does, don't be surprised if Goal ends up winning the Rocket.
This kid is truly special.
Yes, It's all about the powertrainING of the Suzuki to combust his engine as hot as the engine of a rocket.
Caufield is great..
BUT, I'm still happy with the Red Wings picking Seider at 6. I can't wait to watch his entire career. 100% getting his jersey
3:04 if you hear this with your eyes close u can hear something totally different than what he is saying
Go Habs
Some haven't played yet. Too soon to say they were stupid. I know you said it but still don't know until years pass. So far he's a stud!
dude OhNyquist.. thank you thank you.
Montreal is the best Canadian franchise
I know you mentioned it briefly but man the Debrincat & Caufield comparison is eerily similar. Both American right handed shots who are good on both ends of the ice, Both highly skilled short guys who were criticized for playing with better players (McDavid, Strome ; Hughes, Turcotte)
Canadiens have faith youth will continue to grow in playoff spotlight
When you’re as young as Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield, every day represents an opportunity.
H|e reminds me so much of Yvan Cournoyer, it's scarey.
3:07 I think both Suzuki and Caulfield were healthy scratches if im not mistaken, I had heard though it was to give them a sense of the atmosphere of playoff hockey.
No, Suzuki was never scratched he's been our 2nd line Center all season and all playoffs
@@mathieutaillefer8418 mb
Caulfield looking good but I'm still very happy to have zegras
Congrats for the prediction ! :D
Now I am hungry for Pizza!
Oh and yes, Caufield is quickly becoming a favourite in our household. Great player with a great attitude!
When this draft happened I was working and told my coworkers "10 GMs will be kicking themselves when this kid gets to the NHL." I stand by that. Detroit should've taken him 6th, imo. In a re-draft he's top 5 for sure
Seider is the REAL deal he is elite and Detroit badly need elite Dman
@@Al_Andaloussi85 Fair point, I'll readily admit that I don't trust defensive prospects to pan out as consistently which is why I had said Detroit should take Caufield at the time. I also think that seider's play in Sweden warrants moving up if there was a re-draft as well
Tbh he isn't making other GMs look dumb (GMs don't even make the draft board), he's making the Habs scouts look good.
Anybody who has played high level sports can tell you that short guys are tough to play against. They're so evasive and agile. The one's that make it far always have ridiculous talent
Love the vid your my top 2 best NHL youtuber behind Steve dangle
I actually wanted this dude for my Avalanche. When the team picking 3rd passed on Byram he was the pick.
Half of the top 15 played together in the development program. Insane
Caufield has so much potential! Definitely someone to look out for in the future.
Yeah I’m going to wait until at least 50% of the players in front of him actually get a chance before I crown Caufield.
Even with the way the top players played it was a great series.
i’m happy with the panthers pick, i can’t wait for him to play for us😏
Cole Caufield is a beast.
Pretty sure caufeild was a healthy scratch in the first few post season games is because they wanted to show what playoff games would be like
The Habs have never really been afraid to draft small. Henri Richard was also 5'7, as was Yvan Cournoyer. They would have drafted Denis Savard, if they hadn't been able to resist drafting instead "the Habs draft pick no Habs fan will utter".
Different time though. Back in those days anyone over 180 pounds was a power forward lol
Wickenheiser...there I said it.
Gm Grundman was influenced by Lafleur’s request for a Large Centerman
@@highdadd6526 Sergachev and Mcdonaugh were essentially given away for free. Drouin's days in Montreal are over.
seems like smaller and more dynamic will be the way to go these days lol
sheesh... its ONE playoffs and a handful of regular season games... lets not get ahead of ourselves..
If he was just a few inches taller, he'd be going in the top 3 guaranteed.
showing the world that he doesn't need those few extra inches
It's because the first 14 gms are girls...
@@Nixonbutcher Yzerman may have hung the biggest balls of the last decade taking Seider 6th and his two seasons since being drafted have been better than anybody’s from this class
Doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that!
Spot on. Another case and - quite literally - Point: 5'10" but doing pretty freakin' well for a guy taken by TBL 79th overall in 2014.
"Size really doesn't matter as long as you got game"
Thank you king, I really needed that right now.🙏😂
theve pulled off 3 straight upsets
Was really hoping the Avs snagged him at #16! Newhook's great too. But Caufield is ripping it up.
My top 5 in a re-draft scenario
1. Moritz Seider
2. Kirby Dach
3. Jack Hughes
4. Spencer Knight
5. Cole Caufield
So as a Blackhawks fan Kirby Dach was a good pick. He is still very young and has a lot of potential to be a star on the team after Kane & Toews retire and everything
Seriously small players needa stop getting overlooked😳
I'd still pick podkolizen. Went from 5'10 to 6'3.
This kid hasn't even played his rookie season yet! Ohhhhhhhh boy 'Goal' Caulfield!!!!!!
What is your Discord? I can’t seem to find it, unless it’s just a private one which I understand
It is semi private, its for channel members. I felt like it would be to chaotic if it was public
Ok yeah I understand that
I would love to have Caufield in my team but I’m still glad my Oilers drafted Philip Broberg. That kid is something special.
as an avs fan we were one pick away but i’m glad we got newhook he only dropped because of the league he played in and depending on how good caufield becomes idk if they would be able to afford him anyway
Montreal had made a HUGE mistake in passing Martin St-Louis for being too small. They didn't repeat that mistake!
Suzuki is making Caufield look way better than he is..
🙄
Flyers fan here. 😔Love York but damn this hurts.
In my mock draft I had Caufield going 8-10, depending on where Zegras went
I know I'm biased, but I'd like to give Podkolzin a year or 2 at the NHL level before deciding he's better or worse.
The Lightning strike me as having more firepower than the Islanders so they would be tougher to play against in my eyes.
Tbf look at the teams that made the semis not one had a defencemen under the height of 6ft and that’s been the same the last 3 years
Irrelevant argument since no one is talking about defencemen here
Obviously Edmonton Vancouver Minnesota and Arizona would like to have picked him but if I look at the others above him these guys are future stars in the league
Is this season considered as his rookies season?
"The Golden Boy" Cole Caufield......
It's Goal Caufield.
For now it’s AHL Caufield
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Also to remember that Anaheim kept Zegras limited to only a certain number of games to have leverage for future contract negotiation. Next year he will no doubt be a Full timer that iIm sure will be in the running for Calder.
I mean look at the rocket and the pocket rocket in a time of hockey when it was even tougher. Size dose not matter if you have the will power
Do you think without jake Allen would the habs be in the playoffs
They wouldn't be for sure!
It's like gambling with the young players as you can't really tell who is going to make it to the top level
He’s in the AHL
I wanted Philly to draft Cole sooooooo badly and they took Cam York, not going to lie I was pissed. I remember when Debrincat was being drafted and we had two chances to draft him and chose not to, as well....
Habs wanted Cam York at first but since you guys took him they went with Caufield instead
@@AKmumu what a decision, that was, for Montreal.
@@AKmumu Nah .. no way. Habs had Caufield on their radar big time. They took him out to supper before the draft and Bergevin is good friends with his agent Patrick Brisson. He asked Brisson if Cole might slip to them at # 15 and Brisson said no way and he thought Cole would go top 10. They were hoping both Florida and Philly would pass on Caufield and when they did, Habs jumped on him.
@@flyersfanatic9053 TVGSW is wrong. Habs would have taken Caufield ahead of York. They had him in their sights after he slipped out of the Top 10 and they were thrilled when he was still there at # 15.
Caufield Suzuki Toffoli will be the new Perfection Line in 5 years
GO BADGERS AND GO HABS!! Love this kid
Honestly, that first round draft is very good despite the fact that Caufield could have gone higher
It was a stacked draft.
Caufield to 9th OVR. But I don't put him ahead of soderstrom as a Cakgary fan, so I'd need to remake the top 10 in the 2019 ED
I'm hoping Boldy pans out, but I still remember watching the draft at a bar with some friends and being super disappointed the Wild didn't draft him.
All I have to think of is Yvan Cournoyer and Theoron Fleury. I noticed than Cournoyer was checking out Caulfield. 🙂
