    Ruf makes some fantastic cars. I had the privilege of sitting down and chatting with Alois Ruf a few years back (2009, so perhaps more than a few) and suffice it to say, the man knows his stuff. The doctor I worked for at the time was a personal friend of his, and while I can't go into too much detail, he had flown over from Germany to visit him. Years prior, he had gifted a custom CTR Yellowbird to said doctor, who with a crippling issue with his left leg was unable to use a clutch pedal. Alois had developed a system of servos around the actual shifter that ultimately lead to the clutch master cylinder, as a result did all of the work for the driver when the shifter was moved into and out of position. Really sophisticated setup. Humble guy with a passion for engineering. At the time the 2011 RGT8 hadn't yet been announced/publicly released but he had a number of media brochures in his briefcase for said car. After our conversation, Alois signed and dedicated it to me personally and to this day it still hangs in my garage.

    This thing is deadly. I've played a fairly well recreated version of this car in a few different games (non-sim) that were able to properly recreate the suspension geometry and weight of the engine in the rear, and I can say that they're incredibly tail-happy and when it isn't, you're wrestling it.
    Also, the Yellowbird is one of my favorite cars, interesting this video was uploaded on my birthday.

    • @maitreyoda7404
      @maitreyoda7404 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s not that tail happy when you drive it properly, Jimmy here is just pushing it in the corners to impress people, but if you drive carefully without trying to drift it you can be way faster than what he did .

    The Faszination video has been one of my favorite watches for almost twenty years now. I get the feeling that he was pitching it around like he was because the car was easier to control if you initiated a burnout-oversteer situation instead of cornering normally and risking understeer turning into snap oversteer. Your video seems to prove this! Great fun to watch

      @thecouchtripper Yes, but if Jimmer would've done it from the start, it would've been super easy for him. I'd have to skim through a ton of videos and manually add each one. It also doesn't help that some of the videos don't include the car name or Nordschleife in the video title, so searching it wouldn't work.

    People have no idea what the 911`s are like to drive from 70's to 80's era, I haven't personally had the pleasure to drive ruf's or highly tuned 911's from that era but would love to do so. The 74 carrera targa that I drove, had been tuned slighty to go into 200+ horsepower was allready terrifying when you accelerated on the exit of a curve, immediately wanted to take you to nearest pine tree or a ditch. Lovely to drive and the feeling of the control that transfers to you thru steering wheel and pedals is something you need to experience, but you need to remember to respect the car and it's physics, and to know your own limits, otherwise you will get injured or killed. Great video Jimmy! Keep up the good work.

    • @mx_nana_banana
      @mx_nana_banana 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Heel and toe is good for cars with no dogs. A dog box, is a gearbox with teeth on the face, and when you shift in a dog box, all you have to do is come off the throttle, and shift. a traditional gearbox, doesn't have dogs, so they won't just fit together, like a dog box, a traditional gearbox will actually get damaged if you use it like a dog box,(a dog gearbox, has holes were the dogs can fit into, and they just spin until they fit).

    • @dalton-at-work
      @dalton-at-work 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      here's a real answer: heel-toe downshifting is done so that when you are ready to get back on the gas, you're already in the correct gear. the "correct gear" being the one that puts you in the powerband. if you don't heel-toe while braking, you're forced to change into the correct gear AFTER braking, wasting precious time while you change gears when you want to be mashing the throttle

      Expanding on sim racer's comment, most cars you see on the road today have a similar feature known as a synchronizer ring, which allows for the same functionality, but built for regular driving. Most gearboxes will have this (though I can't say for cars you see in sim racing lol)
      That said, there are still benefits to doing heel-toe with these mechanisms. For one, done correctly it will reduce wear on the systems, as well as have a smoother feeling shift. And because you don't wait for the synchro/dog to speed up the gearbox, this can sometimes provide a faster downshift as well.

      Basically when you downshift, the lower gear needs higher engine speed to match wheel speed, so when you do heel-toe you tap the throttle to increase engine speed and then match the gear. If you don't, the transmission will speed up the engine mechanically. This puts more stress on the transmission, which wears faster. The engine brake also slows down the driving wheels and usually lock them (in a RWD car, it's like pulling the handbrake)

    I agree, driving this car is one of the most difficult things in the world... once I raced this car against other with this same car and at the end of the race they were 2 of us left with a car in one piece, all the others retired

    The 930 is one of my favourite cars of all time but I know I'd snap oversteer myself into a ditch if I ever owned a car that didn't have its engine in the front.

    I always got along with this car. Drive it with throttle and weight transfer, rather than steering. It's awesome, and a great lap Jimmer.

    I was just trying out the new Group 4 Porsche 934 Turbo RSR in Raceroom tonight. Very similar experience (though not as sideways, but certainly no less scarier or difficult - makes you terrified of every single crest or corner, no matter how small, and especially the high speed ones), very similar time. And very much recommended if anyone haven't tried it yet.

    It would be cool to see you do these laps in other older cars with questionable handling that have been modified to go even faster by aftermarket tuners such as Yenko and SLP Camaros, Lingenfelter Corvettes and Saleen Mustangs.

    This car is only difficult to drive if you're going for lap times. If you try and copy the driving of the irl yellowbird around the ring, its pretty easy. It feels like a drift car in AC
