I build 8th generation Suburbans into overlanding rigs using the same rough country lift you use on your 95. I have to say that the later years of the 8th gens with the horsepower increase feel very sufficient on power both on and off road vs the older ones.
That suburban is in incredible shape! TBI's naturally just don't have a lot of power/performance, if it where a 96 and up the Vortec engines where a game changer in performance.
I got a '99 Burban too. Named her Tessie. She's a 2wd 5.7 1500. Only aftermarket mod thus far is a 3" spacer block lift on both front and rear end so now she sits at stock 1500 4x4 height. New head and top end gaskets, new fuel pump, new regulator, new ball joints and tie rods, new tires, tranny filter, and rear end fluid change. Bought the truck from my old job at a scrapyard. Keeping her for a work truck/family truckster. Biggest issues i got now are worn o rings in the spider where the fuel lines bolt in, a crack in my windshield, and i need to get adjustable camber bolts because she's sitting with a lot of negative camber due to the lift kit. Runs and drives like a champ despite the never ending vacuum noise coming from the spider o-rings lol. Let us know what mods and repairs you make to your Burban.
Jim, You love the sheet metal on that truck. If you roll it over on one of those taller slopes, you'll hate yourself for the rest of your life. Don't try to impress anyone on YT, we don't want what you want. Keep admiring the tires, road clearance and how many cubic feet of space you have in it. Leave the rock climbing to some jack off with a Jeep. If they tear one of them up, so what? There's 200K of them out there, just like it.
Jimmy, put a nice cam in her youll love what it will do for power for you, also you have a perfect motor for a cam being its been taken care of its hole life,in other words....its worth it!!👍
When you said it's really not that big of a vehicle I smiled. I've got a 1994 2500 4x4 6.5L Diesel Burb and I also own a 2008 crew cab long bed 4x4 Nissan Frontier. Guess what, both vehicles have almost the same wheel base, they are pretty much the same length and the same width, and the Suburban has a better turning radius then my mid size Frontier. Weight is another story as the Burb is HEAVY but its payload is considerably higher then the Frontier. Funnily the Burb is pretty much the same size as my mid size Frontier and it has a 42 gal fuel tank and gets the same if not better mpgs then the Frontier due to the Diesel and can be loaded up more and tow more then my truck. The Suburban platform seems like a great overland platform to me.
As the original owner of a 250,000 mile GMC Z71 I can tell you these tricks run forever. Only 2 downsides. The frame rust and push button transfer case.
I have a '94 K2500 Suburban w/1 ton axles/4WD/7.4L big block Chevy engine w/4L80E trans, that rig will go anywhere and tow its own weight and then some. 5-10 mpg is atrocious but it gets the job done. With 150K miles, it still hauls ass with that 454 engine!
I just found your channel yesterday and subscribed today. Your Suburban is absolutely beautiful! It makes me miss my 1992 and 1997 Suburbans. I took the '92 on some nasty trails but like you said not where a true rock crawler would go. I took the '97 all over the east coast sometimes pulling a trailer and sometimes simple off road exploring like you in this video. Right now I'm using a 2007 Explorer which tows and camps great but obviously doesn't have the room that yours does. Keep that truck it does look good from every angle!
You are a true truck guy and whole hearted person! I really enjoy your videos and even gain some knowledge from different little things you do! Stay safe brother and merry Christmas from WV!
I would check your balljoints and sway bar end links. If you're going to do more trails you might want to take the sway bar end links off or pick up some quick disconnect ones. Last thing air down to about 20psi it will help out and give you a softer ride, if you can air back up. Do not drive on road aired down. Great video looking forward to the next ones.
Get a Black Bear Performance tune for your suburban!! I hear they are game changing to the gmt400 platform. Lots more power and fuel economy doesn't go down
It is possible your truck had the fan clutch replaced and it is enabling before it should. I have a '96 and mine (I know is 100% original) only comes on the hottest days and then usually only on grades. It has come on (enabled) after a long heat soak on a hot day at a gas station while filling up (and then starting the engine). They are also rear diff ratio-dependent. As expensive as it is, maybe cross-check to see if yours is the correct part number from the Dealer.
Raptors come with IFS and they are built on the 1500 platform. It’s your upper control arm bump stop probably. Drop differential lift kits are the way to go to avoid bad cv angles. Get Rough Country’s forged upper control arms. The new Jeep Gladiator has a longer wheelbase than your Suburban.
Definitely be careful exploring solo! I just got my 95 K1500 pulled out of a trail in Frazier Park when my 4x4 wouldn't engage and the trail was slick from last week's melted snow. 😅
Sounds like the dreaded GM thermal switch that actuates the 4WD. Replaced mine with a later one with electric actuator and adapter harness, works great.
MORE POWER! I've been thinking about pulling a cam out of an LT1 Camaro, fits like a glove (GM) and I think bumps it up 10hp so its the mild, parts swap sort of project for a truck like ours, without making the jump to something super modern like an LS swap. I figured it would be a cool video idea to send your way
The front sway bar is what hinders the articulation on IFS trucks. Some people remove it all together. The clunk in front could be a body mount or front driveshaft universal joints.
Add a set of flowtech shorty headers, throttle body spacer, injector pod riser and kn air filter. Your going to pay about 500 dollars but you will get about 50 or 60 hp
You made good decisions. Part of being a man is keeping the spirit of the boy alive, but allowing the wisdom of the man to overrule the spirit of the boy. (case by case)
This is what I'm talking about buddy! Great video!!! Looking forward to hauling an RV with my 1999 2500 suburban which I'm in the process of cosmetic upgrades now that I have the engine and suspension done
You can achieve more power with some Vortec heads and a mild cam. The 350 has its torque down low where you want it for the trails. I feel my 5.3 lacks that low end grunt down low that my 350 has.
Great channel... been watching it for sometime... getting rid of my 2002 sub and my 4th sub will be a very well taken care of and modded out 1997 2500 4x4 454...I am picking up from a friend this weekend... he moved to a 2007 Toyota Land Cruiser. Hoping to fix up my first truck, a 1986 Toyota 4x4 turbo and tow it around.
Like Steve said you at 5.3 l LS swap power train products has a 5.3 leader for about 3500 dollars and makes 400 horsepower Use a Holly ecu With their Holly Hi ram and fuel rails do some shorty's Or long Tube headers You'll have to add a return style fuel system. If you go on power nation and truck Tech they did Conversion turn the truck from 4x4 drive to all will drive made it into a sport truck. But the power train involved needs a new engine and transmission so like A 4L80e. Or a 6l80e Automatic transmission conversion and you'll have to have new driveshaft front and rear. I'm doing the same thing to my 98 Chevy Tahoe. I'm gonna same build as you are as far as overland suspension components except for on one of use the shocks from rough country
Love seeing you enjoy the truck after the money and wrench time you've put into her. Getting closer to enjoying my '99 Burban here soon. I dont think ill be taking her on trails considering she's a 2wd equipped with Cooper Evolution street tires but road trips and camping trips are soon to come! I have a question though. My Burban has the long overhead console that extends to the back seat. The previous owners had some kind of video system in it but they removed it before selling the truck to my old scrapyard. Ive been looking for two years now and can not find an overhead console for a '99 suburban that is as long or that features a fold down screen of any kind. Have you ever come across these consoles?
Awesome! I love your channel and following your journey. I’ve got a ‘95 2dr 4wd Tahoe that I’m beginning to modify, and so I am wondering if 33” tires would be worth the cost (small lift + new 17” wheels) and really add that much capability over the OME 16x7 wheels and standard LT265 size tires?
I've always liked this body style of suburban. I prefer the generation before but this one still has a classic and square body. One question. May be kind of dumb as I've looked up elsewhere, but does this rig really have a 40 gallon tank?
Why did you switch back to a clutch fan after installing electric fans? Great videos btw. I'm a new subscriber. I'm currently rebuilding a 1997 GMC Sierra K1500.
awesome views, burb did good. would be cool to get you a cheap jeep XJ and build something you can beat on and join an offroad group but offroading can be an expensive hobby with how much you break stuff. i use to love going mud boggin, i know you guys dont get enough rain for that in cali but its very fun till you get stuck. :)
If the fans are doing good, why not seek other ways to gain horsepower like an intake, catback exhaust, headers or even a tune? It shouldn't take much to offset the losses of a clutch fan. I added a K&N drop in intake which has way better flow then any paper intake and it was a noticeable difference. Just little things as I know you want to keep it reliable and as stock as possible.
About to flush my transmission was wondering if you’ve had any issues whatsoever with the max life atf. I know those 4L60’s love to fail if mistreated.
I love dispursed camping (no campgrounds) and exploring the deserts- I refuse to use the "Overland" B.S. term... It seems so WOKE-hipster-look at my -Spinter van camper... LOL
Front driver noise - Could be sway bar end links? Overlanders don't pick the Suburban because of the weight and turning radius. For the trails you are on now, sure the Suburban works good, but come up north were the trails are much tighter and wetter - you'll regret your choice. I had the same view before I moved the the PNW.
I just put some New tires on my Expedition 02 looking for a nice eazy fun trail. Area Las Vegas, California, Utah. Arizona. I thinking about Sandy hollow in Utah.
Dammit. You got me itching to get the Tahoe straightened out so I can take the kiddo out for some fun. Just need a few extra dollars to do it. Get away from this mask wearing and enjoy the outdoors.
Thats crazy weird i have a 99 gmc suburban as well and mine started clanking the same way after i changed the shocks. Im thinking i need to tighten them down better. Just recently did mine havent tightened them yet. Try that and make an update video
I just bought mine in may put about 2k in the engine to find out after changing my crank seal 2 times that my crank is mosy likely bent because it wont stay sealed. Its very depressing. Its leak free other than that. Now im torn between replacing the motor or driving it with the leak....😞
I build 8th generation Suburbans into overlanding rigs using the same rough country lift you use on your 95. I have to say that the later years of the 8th gens with the horsepower increase feel very sufficient on power both on and off road vs the older ones.
This Suburban is the ultimate overlander. All it needs is a winch and a roof top camper and you're set!
That suburban is in incredible shape!
TBI's naturally just don't have a lot of power/performance, if it where a 96 and up the Vortec engines where a game changer in performance.
You have a great truck, looking forward to more of your post. We own a 1999 Suburban and can't wait to do some upgrades to it.
I got a '99 Burban too. Named her Tessie. She's a 2wd 5.7 1500. Only aftermarket mod thus far is a 3" spacer block lift on both front and rear end so now she sits at stock 1500 4x4 height. Please keep doing what your doing, I'm Building my 94 full size Blazer following your lead.I enjoy everything your doing to your Sub. Thank you!!
As the original owner of a 250,000 mile GMC Z71 I can tell you these tricks run forever. Only 2 downsides. The frame rust and push button transfer case.
I'd do an LS 5.3 swap if and when the 5.7 gives out. They're pretty inexpensive and common now.
383 Stroker is the way to go!
7.4 big block
I have a '94 K2500 Suburban w/1 ton axles/4WD/7.4L big block Chevy engine w/4L80E trans, that rig will go anywhere and tow its own weight and then some. 5-10 mpg is atrocious but it gets the job done. With 150K miles, it still hauls ass with that 454 engine!
Nice! I have an '05 Z71 I'm using for overland. Keep on trucking!
You got a really nice truck Jimmy. Couldn't ask for anything better.
The Suburban has storage and comfort you could never get out of a Jeep. Plus that Suburban looks great.
I go every weekend with my yukon ,thank God never broke down, here in vegas has a lot of places
Maybe some day I go over California you can show me some places

Check your bushings on the roll bar the ones on the frame and the lower A arms for being a worn or not tight enough.
I have an 88 k1500 and I can tell you that sound you are hearing is your top A arm tapping the droop stop under the top A arm
You are awesome man. I love your videos and all the details you give us. A lot of helpfull info . Love it. Blessings man.
I sure love that suburban.
Get a Black Bear Performance tune for your suburban!! I hear they are game changing to the gmt400 platform. Lots more power and fuel economy doesn't go down

@@MM_in_Havasu Yep, I've already ordered that electric actuator and looking forward to being mud-worthy again!
Does your truck have a "G80" rear diff? (You can just check the glove box codes).
You might need to replace the swing arm linkage... Very cheap and easy to do in about an hour or so...
Kinda gave me some motivation with my long bed f150. I’m back and forth on taking it off road because of the length, knowing I’ll get stuck.
Just don’t treat it like a Jeep and you’ll be fine! 👍👍

13:23 Maybe shackles making noise? Not sure if you've already done bushings/mounts yet. Truck has come a long way. Nice job!
You can overheat when 4x4ing in 4 high because of overdrive.
Those tires don't look all that narrow! Looks good.
When I had my '02 Burb, the swaybar end links were good for making janky sounds off road. Might be due for new ones.
Custom bumpers with a winch and lights.
Yes!
Also I have the problem with squishy brakes what did you do to get it fixed
My 1999 Tahoe also makes a clanking noise it seems to be coming from the suspension but after a few years I have no clue what it is
Know others have asked? Gonna get together with suboverland. And get interior converted, you are a suburban addict after all...great story of changes.
Use to hunt up there in the early 90s lots of trails
Great! Production value and editing keeps getting better and better.
Thanks man!!
I’d say to run the clutch fan over the electric fans. The clutch fan is much more reliable over electric
I would remove that rear sway bar to help with articulation and a better ride
Love seeing you enjoy the truck after the money and wrench time you've put into her. Getting closer to enjoying my '99 Burban here soon. I dont think ill be taking her on trails considering she's a 2wd equipped with Cooper Evolution street tires but road trips and camping trips are soon to come!

Try the hills Jimmy! You always have R for retreat and N for not now. Lol. Thanks.
Hi, my name is. Mark l have 1995 Chevy Suburban.but No real heat. Can you make video how to hook up the hoses?
Engine rebuild to gain that horsepower🐎
Awesome! I love your channel and following your journey.

I've always liked this body style of suburban. I prefer the generation before but this one still has a classic and square body. One question. May be kind of dumb as I've looked up elsewhere, but does this rig really have a 40 gallon tank?
How much do you spend on all the new parts? Where do you get them? From?
What a great looking rig buddy
Nice Ride. Is it locked in the rear? If not I would Lockrite it inexpensive and eliminate s spiders..
Where is this trail at?
Nevermind...Deer Peak Junction in Agua Dulce.
can I anticipate a solid axle swap?😳
Yes I seen him asking about it in another channel
Why did you switch back to a clutch fan after installing electric fans? Great videos btw. I'm a new subscriber. I'm currently rebuilding a 1997 GMC Sierra K1500.

100%
To me it’s just called camping in general. Camping is camping. Location is what matters in camping.
Check sway bar end links...and fix that ABS so we can see the video !
Do a 12 valve 5.9L Cummins swap on it. That'll give you better power and fuel economy.
The sound could be your shock extending out to max and topping out.
4600's?
NVM. Probably not the shocks.
Front driver noise - Could be sway bar end links? Overlanders don't pick the Suburban because of the weight and turning radius. I just put some New tires on my Expedition 02 looking for a nice eazy fun trail. Area Las Vegas, California, Utah. Arizona. I thinking about Sandy hollow in Utah.
Nice set up. Did you have it lifted? What size tires? I have a 94 Suburban I want to fix up. Mine is not 4 wheel drive.
Yep, I installed the Rough Country 2-3” lift kit and put some BFGoodrich KO2 tires. I’ve got a video on my channel about all that. Check it out! ✌️
@@1RoadGarage thank you.
Nice gmc
I wish my 00 Z71 tahoe was clean like that
I have a 1997 gmc suburban want to lift but i dont know yet
That looks a lot like Camp Pendleton
Get CalTopo or Gaia on your phone. See where you are in airplane mode.
Entertaining video
Why is it hard to find the 1995 GMC 2500
IF YOU ARE EVER READY TO GIVE UP THE TRUCK I'LL BUY HER !
I say put a turbo on it for more power....lol....
What truck
That's a good looking k1500
I want a 3" lift for my tahoe.
I just bought mine in may put about 2k in the engine to find out after changing my crank seal 2 times that my crank is mosy likely bent because it wont stay sealed. Its very depressing. Its leak free other than that. Now im torn between replacing the motor or driving it with the leak....😞
For most of where you where driving there is no need to be in 4 wheel drive.
Is that your daily driver?
It was. Now I daily an ‘03 Suburban.
You couldn’t pay me to get a jeep over that suburban. Chrysler can’t build anything worth a crap.
But SUB is 10xbetter than jeep!
Ball joint..
install a LS6 or LS7 :)
Jimmy, if that’s del sur ridge I can confirm the steepness of those two alternate offshoots.
Literally everything you just did you could do with a stock burb
Makes me wish I had a 4x4 😑😔
🙄
