I am only in my 40's and need to get eye injections (anti-VEGF) every 6 weeks to stop my right eye's retina from bleeding (left untreated would lead to complete blindness at the macula). Why is it bleeding? Pathologic myopia. How did I get that? Most likely from my optometrist--who I assume overcorrected my vision every year from a very young age. I went from a -1.00D to -12.00D over 15 years. Can I prove it was his fault? no. But I do have some evidence that it was his fault. All of my brothers (3) and sisters (2) went to him. My younger sister and I are the only two who wore our glasses faithfully every day. My sister also has high myopia. All my other siblings were prescribed glasses from the same optometrist, but seldom wore them. Today, all of them have good vision and don't need corrective lenses any more (except readers). I feel like an idiot. My left eye is 2 diopters behind my right eye. I fear it will eventually develop choroidal neovascularization, too.
Jake, I agree. It takes courage to stand up to these arrogant optometrists. They know this has been going on for years (emmetropization), but would rather cash in on prescribing expensive glasses and contacts to young children instead of letting the eye naturally grow to 20/25 or better.

Dr. Bates found back in 1920 that it’s caused by strain, he cured tons of people with relaxation methods. I found his method six months ago and have been practicing it and my eyes feel a lot better and my vision is slowly improving! Hello from Bangkok. I have high myopia of something around -8.00 and some astigmatism and it’s unequal between two eyes. To make it worse, last time I checked the doctor said my current glasses is inaccurate. At first we thought it’s genetics as my dad is -1.50 nearsighted. 20years later from when I was first diagnosed I looked back and see nobody in my family has as severe myopia as I am and nobody in my family wear glasses as much as I do. Now I have ordered a reduced prescription glasses of -6.00 from online shop. I’ll learn more about this subject.

Same here! I'm a Biology major so I KNOW poor vision is inherited, typically in a recessive fashion. My dad insisted nobody ever had vision this bad (I'm - 10 in both eyes). I told him you must just not know, someone HAD to have it. He laid out the whole family tree for me and told me every single person's vision history for the last 4 generations- hardly anybody even needed reading glasses in old age!!!

I have not changed my prescription since 12 yrs and yet my vision, as a myope, has decreased 0.75 than before on both eyes, which proves that your theory of eye ball adaptations is unrealistic. Although, there is a possibility that it may have halted the steep drop ,yet, the repeated eye straining to focus has brought about headaches, facial wrinkles and skin creases.

Have your glasses for close up work less than your actual prescription until you have a bit of blurriness while working close up. This is called differential glasses.

Hello, I am a litlle bit different case, because I have been last checked about 3 years ago and I had 6.5 D (Now I think it has over the years increased but not too quickly like before I hope). But to this day I wear 5.25 to school that I can see on board (but mostly I am sitting really near). I fell like I have 70% vision of normal person with it but it does not cause huge problems for me. The interesting thing ist that I am always relived when I get home and take my glasses off. For closeup I wear 2.75 or 3.00 and when I am somewhere in the nature where is it safe a dont have glasses at all. I Have almost never done the thing of having my glasses all day long on nose. I am only 17 and I was always insecured about it but trough the years I developed this "ability" to not be adiccted on my glasses. I dont know if this is good or bad but I dont really want to get used to higher D. Could this work for me? I cant do the edge of blurry thing properly when I am wearing less D, But I think that active focus is working good.

I go by rule wearing the least I need for activities but I am not doing somethig limitig me or something uncomfortable. I do this from childhood but the concept of dropping too much scared me, but my case is different? Are my eyes more trained? Or should I wear glasses with the D I need even if it is uncomfortable? I think I could have 7 D or smt like that (or more) :(.

Hi! I’m no eye doctor or anything, but I have been following Bates ‘Perfect eyesight without glasses’ method (it’s in his book, you can find it for free online or watch Nathan Oxenfelds videos about it) and he suggests not wearing glasses at all (if possible with your lifestyle of course) I stopped wearing my glasses six months ago and started practicing the Bates method and my eyes feel a lot better and I’ve noticed slowly my sight is getting better. I really feel like the Bates method is working for me, and I have -5 and -4 myopia

So it looks like based on the animation that the hyperopic defocus is mostly peripherial. Also it looks like the more elongated (elliptical) the eye the bigger the peripherial hyperopic defocus, right? I wonder that in case myopia is very high, would a slight undercorrection (like 0.25) potentially cause peripherial hyperopic defocus too?

@@endmyopia yeah not just due to the animation but ever since i started EM i was wondering about this quesrion actually. Consodering that the emmetropic eye is spherical it would make sense that if light focuses on the central fovea then it would also focus emmetropically on the peripherial. And when eye starts being elliptical this theory would lead to being hyepropic defocus on the peripherial. But i dont know, these are just my guesses :) also for me i always had to reduce whenever i was around 20/25 as it wasnt getting better than that. I always reduce to 20/40 or so, and after couple of weeks the previous normz becomes 20/20. So i am not exactly following the EM guidelines but this is how it worked the best for me :)

I wore -0.50 (last half a year even -0.75) too strong glasses for computer work for 5 years but with atropine drops they measured the exact same prescription as before the wrong prescription. Maybe this damage happens if eyes are still developing, but after that I'm not so sure. Granted the eyesight doesn't return back immediately, it takes 2 months due to muscles having to adapt back. All this ordeal did, however, cause a lot of suffering, I'm still not back to normal (in terms of comfort)
