Everybody warned me that if I got glasses I would never be able to read without them. So for years I resisted. But eventually I got glasses and they were exactly right. Now without them I can’t read anything.
I also regret wearing them. Me and my sister both had about the same vision when we were young. I thought I was doing the right thing by wearing them. She didn't. She is still doing fine. My vision is a lot worse than her and on top of that my undereye circles are way worst than hers. I need a full coverage concealer and she doesn't...
Specs is helpful to reduce ur myopia but if u depends on specs Everytime it will worst ur sight remember only wear specs for driving or any long sight don't use when doing things closer
Wore contacts for 12+ years. Started taking walks in the park without contacts in/glasses on. After 4 months my eyes have improved 2 diopters. -6 diopters to -4. The eyes are something that more research needs to be done on. Research conducted by people without monetary incentives.
Thanks Dr Wong I have myopia since 2012 I never wear my glasses regularly I only use my glasses while watching TV or in classroom. And my numbers haven't changed. After watching this video i am confident that i don't need to wear them always.

Don't change prescription glasses so often, because in my experience that worsen the vision!!! I was at one point that, when I didn't find my glasses, I was panic to not finding it. When I start using my very first glasses my sight got better! All the time when you go with the optometrist they give you more prescription that you need, and that makey your vision worse every time! That's from my experience, now I can see a lot better!
@@omedina1956 same here, whenever I wear glasses with the right prescription for a while, I can literally feel my eyes being stressed and becoming more elongated. If I take it off, the stress just vanishes.
You might be saying facts now, but it is hard for me to believe things that are the opposite of my experience. My eyes improved after I stopped wearing glasses.

At 18 years old, when I went to my regular eye appointment doctor said there wasn't any need for me to wear glasses. I think if you stop wearing them your eyes will learn to adapt to the environment.

The reason why ophthalmologists would say that it's just a myth that glasses worsen our eyes is that everyone would stop buying glasses and doctors would lost patients. Hence, no money 🤪
I went to the eye doctor who also happens to sell glasses and they did a test on me and recommended glasses but i know i dont need any. They just want to sell you glasses.

I went 14 years without getting a new pair of glasses, and when I finally did, there was only a 2 point difference, when you get eye exams every year, they'll bump up your prescription at least a quarter point each time (so that they can sell you a new pair of glasses each time), so 14 years at a quarter point a pop would've been 3.5 points, but by not going every year, I only went up 2 points and saved 6 years of annual quarter point bumps.
this is just not true. Not for everybody. I am wearing glasses for 20 years now and I did only 2 or 3 uprgrades to them. Alway about small gaps, like 0.25 or 0.50 of myopia
@sociologicalgame270 When he said almost blind, he meant that you're essentially helpless without them, you can't do anything cos you're too blind to see anything enough to be able to do anything.

Take your glasses off and your vision will be blurry but just wait a while and you will get your old vision back. Your brain basically uses your blurry vision and makes the image clearer. I just got new glasses for astigmatism. When i take off my glasses, my vision is worse, but really, that is how my vision always was, my brain just enhances the image. Keep your glasses off for a while and your brain will kick in again
I have myopia since I was 13 years old and I never wore glasses and my eyes are of -3.25 and -3.5 (I'm 15rn)It is way mild than my friends of the same age who started wearing glasses when they just had -1.75 D and now there vision has worsened too much(-6D).the glasses Shops from where you buy your glasses want you to renew your glass every year,so they would give you more powerful glasses to induce myopia by increasing your prescription by -.25D and would say that it will decrease headaches.

Hi Dr. Rupa, I must dispute you on solid scientific grounds. As a superior ophthalmologist, medicine is your total life. But in engineering science, you are just wrong. If you place a -3 Diopter lens, on the normal eye, it becomes -2 diopters more myopic in nine months. Our "nearsightedness ", is always self induced, as a scientist. ( Technically it is a control system. ) That means, that prevention is possible, if the mature person, will wear a +2 diopter for all close work, when he is a 20/50, on his Snellen. Then slowly, he will get his Snellen back to 20/20. The minus lens makes your refractive state, even more negative, always. Tragically. Even you use Atropine to prevent accommodation, on your children.
Ok you are right. I wear glasses and I wonder why each time o visit my option the lens has to be increased for adjustment.if the glases don't weaken the eyes why do they have to increase lence after evert two years? Kindly communicate I need some help
Myopia is usually caused by having a too long eyeball or too steeply curved cornea. Glasses can't affect those directly, they can only affect the muscles that control the lens of the eye.
I have a question man my astigmatism is mild It’s like this 0.25 0.25 0.25 0.75 My astigmatism is very mild and my issue is light glare, starburst and halos and the way light looks is different than before Do you think if I wear glasses it’ll get worst ? Also note that I’m not far sighted or nearsighted and can see very far or super close What do you think ?
I was an optician for over 35 years and as such I remember fitting a young girl or boy with their first pair of glasses to correct their myopia. Their first glasses were usually very weak. About a year later I would see them again and their eyesight had deteriorated more and they needed an increase in their glasses. With each increase they of course were wearing their glasses more and more often until they were never without their glasses anymore. I never, ever saw anyone needing their prescription reduced. Considering that you have been an ophthalmologist for twenty years and have never needed glasses until this year is amazing. All the reading and studying your eyes were doing should have had you wearing glasses long ago as a nearsighted doctor. So you have been extremely lucky to have had very good vision, and still do, for so long. I'm sure the prescription you now have is very weak and mostly just to relax your eyes doing close work. But lets' see what happens to your eyesight when you next examine your eyes. I'm betting that since getting your glasses you are wearing your glasses a little more often each month. aren't you? I'm also betting that you're going to be needing an increase in your glasses. At some point you're going to get tired of putting on and taking off your glasses and you're going get progressives so you can keep your glasses on all the time. You may or may not need a prescription in the upper segment. By the way, your patient's are going to trust you more if your wearing glasses yourself. I should also add that you look good in glasses. Have you ever wore non-prescription glasses just for fashion?
Do contacts have the same effect too ?? So i dont see the board clearly on the last bench of class I have no glasses what should i do stay partial blind for life or wear glasses
I had the same issue. I didn’t think I needed glasses when I was younger, but we’re prescribed some for near sightedness. Ever year my vision would get worse and worse. I finally got PRK to correct that. 10 years later. I was told by a Dr that I would need reading glasses. Ever since I have had trouble reading things close to me line my keyboard and monitor. After giving it up for a few weeks I was able to read the keyboard again.
I didn't wear glasses and improved my eyesight. Wearing glasses is like you are training your eyes to be weaker and even if it doesn't affect you, it will still affect your next generations due to your genes of your eyes adapting to glasses.
@Black Hole No, I don't wear glasses. And if I have to watch either of them (pc or mobile) for a long duration of time then I close my eyes for short periods to give them some rest; just like you let your muscles rest during weight training.
I get headaches when I wear my glasses. My correct prescription should be even stronger but my doctor didn’t want to give me such a high prescription. My glasses don’t even help they are so bad.
@@KoolKukumber Oh, I used to work with a woman who wore glasses, and she used to ask me and my eyes 👁👁 to read notes on the computer to her (I've never had or needed glasses). And she was wearing her glasses! That's how bad her eyes were!
My daughter is 10, and she is high myopia with astigmatism. When she went to the eye doctor last year at age nine her prescription was a -8.00 in her left eye and -6.75 in her right eye. Her left eye jumped 2.25 diopters in one year and her left eye jumped 1.50 diopters, I think. She's been in glasses since she was five, and her second optometrist put her in contacts at age six to try and slow down her progression. The last eye doctor put in her notes that she had +1 elevation, with apical vessel branching in her left optic nerve. He told me she would lose the peripheral vision in her left eye. He told me why, but I don't remember. He also said if I don't remember why not to worry about it. NY question is should she be seen by a pediatric ophthalmologist or is it fine for her to just keep seeing an optometrist? Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.
Finally I know why my eyes were blurrier than before. I was freaking out today when I took of my glasses and couldn’t even see A THING EVERYTHING WAS BLURRY!!! but thanks I now know why my vision has being going worse these days!
My prescription in jan 2021 was -0.75 I had a slight astigmatism and only used them for looking at the board in class… long story short I lost my glasses around may. I didn’t think it was a big deal and therefore didn’t tell my parents cuz I knew I’d get into trouble lmao. However with me constantly squinting and struggling to see in class I got to a point where it was just impossible to see. I went in for my new appointment bc it had been a year. I jumped from -0.75 to a -1.75 and have been told to wear my glasses all day. I’m not sure if that happened naturally or if me squinting caused damage to my eyes …
I just made my glasses and my prescription is -0.8 and i have a slight astigmatism . I just want to wear it when i watch my phone or TV and i don't want to wear them all day , so is it ok if i wear them only for that. Or will it make my eyes vision worse? And I'm 19 yrs old.
Yes glasses do worsen your vision and I'm living proof of that. When I first got my glasses I was able to see but then a year later the glasses wasn't working and I felt I needed a higher prescription but then I said to my self I'ma stop wearing my glasses then my vision reversed slowly within a year my vision started coming back but I can't see things far it's blurry but I no longer need glasses for seeing things close like before now I can't see things far without squinting
You can't leave glasses once you use them, because you're eyes depend on them, they just confirmed it when she made her claim 2:07 in the video but she keep saying it's not true when in reality it does.
Definitely does make it more worse cause I remember before wearing glasses I used to be able to see the clock in my bedroom and then after wearing it for a little while when I was a kid I was no longer able to see the clock on the wall properly

It is crazy how what western medicine teaches eye doctors are the exact opposite of what people experience first hand. I have read story after story of how specifically children should not wear glasses and those who are prescribed them that don't wear them later are shown to no longer have a prescription needed where children who did wear their prescription glasses had to keep them for life. I have experienced my vision become dependent and even used tests to confirm. I stopped wearing my glasses and years later my vision has mostly improved yet an eye doctor would tell me to wear them which would put me back again. Do you think people who look at the same signs from the same distance before and after glasses are just lying that they used to be able to see it better before they got glasses ? No. That is silly. Also, children who are indoors most of the time need glasses in time. Let your children get sunlight. Their eyes need it. Sungazing is corrective. Western medicine is corrupt and bought out by Rothschilds.
Do not let your kids stare at the sun...come on guys that's just so dumb I can't even imagine why people are liking this comment. Dr. Rupa explained how the changes to the shape of the eye and/or muscles causes the vison distortion that glasses correct. This is a summary of scientific findings that you never address. Your experiences with not using glasses and that improving your vision is most likely due to the phenomenon of 'accommodation'. This does not mean your vision actually improved. It may seem like it did because your brain and eyes are straining to see more clearly. This is not good for you and does not actually lead to lasting changes in vision. It's how the brain is accommodating with the stress of trying to see clearly. Natural vision does not improve your vision and studies show this. I think rational people should not look at the "story after story" that you vaguely reference and rather look at the decades of research. Farsightedness (Hyperopia) can be outgrown but nearsightedness (myopia) cannot. Kids need glasses to help them possibly outgrow or deal with the changes in vision. If not, this can cause permeant problems. There are many variables in play and usually stories do not give the full picture. So, you can have a story where one kid outgrows their glasses but one doesn't, but you'd be comparing apples and oranges due to one kid having different genetic or physical differences. This is why we should rely more on science than an assortment of stories, because scientific tools of statistics and causality analysis can actually find what the reasons behind some change are. I write this for the kids. If you're a grown adult and want to experiment on yourself and believe this stuff, then have at it. The kids usually don't have a say in the matters of their parents. When they're young enough they believe their guardians know what's best for them and have their best interest at heart. Even when they're teenagers and can think mostly for themselves they still don't have the legal independence to make decisions for themselves, such as making doctors appointments or getting glasses. Don't experiment on your kids over what you read on the internet. Work with PROFESSIONALS that have DECADES of clinical experience and have seen THOUSANDS of patients. No clinician is perfect but its hell of a lot better than staring at the sun. Your message is dangerous because you're directly talking to parents ("Let your children get sunlight. Their eyes need it. Sungazing is corrective"). Some will absolutely be gullible enough to fall for this stuff. Hope I can a decent enough counternarrative for them to atleast look at the scientific principles and studies behind eye research.
That is so true I remember as a kid when I was in my room I used to be able to see the clock very clear the hands on it and the numbers and then after wearing glasses I wasn't able to see it properly. I wish I stopped wearing glasses sooner
Yeah its interesting. I had an interesting experiance too. At 45 I relised i need reading glases, so while I was on holiday in Lithiania i went to check my eyes. Turned out my vidsion is just slightly off, so I need something +0.75 to +1 Now whil +1 would give me the perfect visio, the optician suggested to consider =0.75 first as long as i need them just sometimes and not for very intense reading . So i ended up gettin +0.75. And they were fine in 98% of time. I could not read these microscopic letter on some tiny items. Now coz i was so happy with them i decided to get another pair of specs for my work. I do work in the UK which means i had to see an optician in UK. Long story short- the optician ordered me +1.5 glasses o_o . Same vision , different country and different optician. Im still using my +0.75 glasses for over a year now and i don use +1.5

@@disurigihansa2618 it clearly does for everyone, your not the only one. It's just a money making scheme. The more you need glasses the more they profit. Loosing your vision isn't a small thing it's a major one and without it, it can make your life very hard. Which is why I have stopped wearing glasses partly and I feel so much better nowadays.
I'm sure youre right but it's just that in the last 2 years it seems like my sight went from perfect to trash. I'm 48. It doesn't seem like an even decline timewise.
Of course a minus lens causes mild nearsightedness, to get much worse. The time for prevention, is before the child's Snellen goes below 20/50. A critical life time choice.
I went to the optometrist for the first time in over two decades, aside from the wishing I could take them off and be fine, I’ve noted my headaches are gone and clarity is much more pronounced than it used to be, I very much was causing myself undo eye strain because of my astigmatism that I didn’t know I had, I am looking into contacts but it makes me feel good knowing they’re helping. I thought I had good vision, I thought I was fine and now that I see how bad it really was but I was just used to it, I’m glad I got them
I have a cousin who has refuses to wear her corrective lenses whether it be glasses or contact lenses. She has needed them since 2016, but she has not worn them since she first got them because according to her, she does not like to put things over her eyes. That is an attitude you can't have if you have poor vision. It is something you can't take lightly because your eyes and your head are going to be in a lot of pain. The side effects are not worth it, and that attitude has to change when she is going to start driving. For people who have poor vision and do not like to wear their corrective lenses and refuse to wear them, suck it up. You can't just choose not to wear them when you need them. You'll make your eyes work harder, it will lead to negative side effects, and if your vision prescription changes over time, that is just going to make the side effects worse. Don't be a fool and just wear your glasses or your contact lenses whether you like it or not.
I feel sorry for you. One for your cousin who probably isn’t doing the the things that will allow him to get his eyes back to clear vision WITHOUT glasses, and one for you who believes that people that are myopic remain like that permanently and can’t improve their vision. people improve their vision. Suck it up
I find this false. I just started using reading glasses a few months ago. Yes they greatly improve my reading. But now I can’t even see the letters on my desktop keyboard.

I've been wearing glasses for 45 years. I totally disagree with you that wearing glasses "Does not affect your vision!!" Doctors and opticians like you are WRONG! Opticians always tend to advise us to prescribe glasses to give us perfect vision. DON'T do that. If you do that, your vision will weaken over time! From my life experience, it is best to prescribe glasses slightly LOWER than your perfect vision. OTHERWISE it will make your eyesight worse EVERY single year you go visit your optician. An over prescribed glasses stimulates the muscles opposite of what our eye muscle needs to focus, wich cases worse vision. Under prescribing glasses helps us exercise our eye muscle to improve our vision.
Yes, I agree with you. Because if people think logically they will understand that if glasses were to improve eyesight as they give perfect vision then our eyesight shouldn't become blurry as when we are a baby mostly we all have a perfect eyesight. So if our perfect vision goes down then this means that having perfect vision doesn't help in improving the eyesight.

So, the key is to give your eyes a break such as when you look at close distance activities such as computers, phones, books, etc. I would say you should give your eyes a minimum of 10 minutes break for every 1 hour of close distance activity. The break means looking at far distance things and not continuing to look at the phone, computer, etc.

Yes, wearing glasses might not worsen your vision but also won’t improve it. however, stopping to wear a glasses can improve and cure vision loss, if not competely, but your eyes will be much healthier and stronger than any person wearing glasses 24/7 every single day. Speaking of experience.

@@DrRupaWongyour wrong, the glasses are the cause of his eyesight getting worse. You are forced to say this, dont spread false information on these people
Your eyesight will naturally improve and get better as you stop using glasses and start focusing more on your eyes on a daily basis, for example going for walks really is the best thing to do.
I think the myth stems from parents having kids get stronger prescription strengths over time; they assume that the glasses make their eyes dependent and worse. But really, children's eye shape naturally grow over time, thus requiring stronger prescription. This is a good example that correlation is not causation. This is what I've heard, is it true? Please correct me if I'm wrong! Edit: please keep posting these myth-busting videos; I love em' !
EXACTLY! Correlation does not equal causation - such a central part of a lot of misinterpretation of medical information (as with Hilary Duff and her eye infection)
But why can't it be true? Correlation doesn't IMPLY causation, sure, but it can. No one can be sure without additional information that the glasses are not at least part of the problem. The phrase "correlation is not causation" works both ways. Why is it that one way is the correct one, but not the other way around?

Myopia, or nearsightedness is the condition when a person cannot see distant objects clearly without glasses. Nearsightedness is caused by focusing on close-up objects such as a book or a computer for long periods of time. The result is that the eyes get stuck in the close-up focus position and can no longer focus on distant objects. If we look inside the eye, we can see how this problem occurs. After focusing on close-up objects for extended periods, the focusing muscles in the eyes (which are called the "ciliary muscles") lock up. This results in the eyes becoming more and more elongated. Nearsightedness occurs when the eyes become overly elongated. When that happens, there is no turning back. The eye cannot go back to its previous shape. The ability to see distant objects clearly without glasses is lost forever. What can be done to prevent nearsightedness in a child? The key is to catch the problem as soon as the child experiences the very first sign of any difficulty seeing distant objects clearly such as the TV or the writing on the board at school. Ask the child from time to time if he or she can see distant objects clearly. For example, ask the child to read a distant road sign or a newspaper held up at a distance. If the child is having any difficulty at all seeing such objects clearly, that is the time to act. Don’t delay - otherwise there will be an irreversible overelongation of the eye. Usually, eye doctors will prescribe distance glasses for correcting blurred distance vision. The wearing of distance glasses aids the vision of myopes by bringing everything closer so that distant objects are within the range of focus. Unfortunately, distance glasses actually make nearsightedness worse and irreversible. This is because they force the focusing muscles to stay locked up. This in turn forces the eyes to further elongate, resulting in the need for stronger distance glasses as time goes by. The child is thus doomed to a lifetime of total reliance on distance glasses to see distant objects clearly and progressively worsening nearsightedness. Distance glasses are a false friend. There is an alternative - reading glasses. If a child starts wearing reading glasses for prolonged periods of reading and other close work at the first sign of any difficulty with distance vision, the focusing muscles will relax and cannot lock up. Reading glasses relax the eyes. There should be no further elongation of the eye. Distant objects can be seen without the need for any glasses. It is important to note that the child will not be reliant on reading glasses. They are simply a protective tool that should be used during long periods of close work. If strong enough reading glasses are used, nearsightedness should be prevented. It is important that the reading glasses be strong enough to completely eliminate all focusing effort (accommodation) when reading. Whenever close work is done without the protection of reading glasses, it is important to: 1. Hold the work as far away as possible. 2. Use as much light as possible in order to reduce the size of the pupil and, consequently, the accommodation. 3. Look into the distance frequently to relax the accommodation. What strength reading glasses should be prescribed? The rule of thumb is to prescribe plus lenses that are about 3 diopters more positive than the distance prescription, in other words a +3 "add." If the child is just moving into myopia, he or she might need a +3 lens. If the child is already a -1, he or she might need a +2 lens. This brings the limit of clear vision in to a typical reading distance of 33 cm or about 13 inches. Astigmatism is normally not corrected. It is essential to tell the child that when using the reading glasses, he or she should keep the object far enough away so that it appears very slightly blurred, but still legible. As the eye tries to clear this slightly blurred image, the maximum relaxing force is applied to the ciliary muscle. Can a child just use reading glasses bought at a drug store? No. A professional should be seen to obtain individualized advice. Drug store reading glasses are intended for adult-size heads. The distance between the lens centers conforms to the usual distance between the pupils of the adult head. If such glasses are used by young children, who have a smaller interpupillary distance, the "prismatic effect" of the lenses causes increased convergence. This can cause problems such as double vision and should be avoided. The distance between the child's pupils should be measured when the eyes are converging on a book. The centers of the eyeglass lenses should not be any farther apart than that distance. .
Brother I am twenty years old with myopia -0.5 . I identified the problem previous year when I noticed that I can't clearly see what is written on Blackboard I only use glasses when I have to see the blackboard Should I wear the glasses all the time ?? By not wearing glasses am I worsening my eyesight??
Reading glasses causes your eyeball to stretch to adjust to the light being focused in the eye. This is called axial elongation. When your eyeball is stretched it causes your nearsightedness to worsen.
I'd love for you to talk about leaking/watery eyes. My Mother, Sister and myself all produce excessive tears (not from crying). We figure it's allergy related, because it appears to be seasonal. Any info on why this happens, is it something to be concerned about and possible treatments. Thanks.
This is incorrect. I had lasik 20 years ago and fixed my vision, but recently it started getting worse again. I had glasses for a few years that did improve my eyesight, but I could still see well without them. 20/20 without glasses, 20/15 with glasses. My vision decreased a little and I got a new perscription a month ago that was uncomfortably strong. And now, yes I can see better with the newer perscription compared to my old glasses, but I can no longer see any of the things that 1 month ago I could see and do clearly without any glasses. That isn't a distorted memory, it's a blurry fact.
I already knew that glasses don't make my eyes worse, because I've been wearing glasses for 9 years (6 years 24/7), and until last year (my prescription basically doubled last year), my prescription only got to -1.25 from the original -0.5, so not even a whole diopter for 8 years. But it was nice to hear some science behind this. 😀
@@DrRupaWong Yes, it's been quite stable, it's just that last summer it turned out that I have astigmatism, but otherwise no major change in my nearsightedness (only -0.5 and -0.25). These 2 changes combined was pretty big for me, but I got used to it without having headache.
@@DrRupaWong I don't know what you're talking about, but don't spread BS. Minus lenses screw vision and it's 100% proven by science since 1970 by Francis Young. They trigger more accommodation(focusing effort) , and the eye changes its refractive state to its average of accommodation. You as a Doc on youtube can't say anything because you are controlled by the imdustry and you get good money out of it , but you do put your kids on atropine so they don't become myopic so you know all this stuff already. Plus lenses for near act just like atropine, and would work even better. Don't lie to the general public. Better if you never uploaded this vid , as I will not stand this medical myth claiming minus lenses are safe when clearly in science the opposite is true.
@@DrRupaWongglasses encourage worse vision. It’s not about looking a at one case and saying “oh see glasses don’t make vision worse.” Because that’s not the reality of the situation. Reality is most of time the glasses do induce bad vision habits and thus make the vision worse. Are you going to ignore those whose vision improved when removing glasses and got worse when they put the glasses back on? Common now. Plus we’re meant to use our God-given eyes. Not some seeing crutches.
Been wearing the same glasses for 7 years scared to get new glasses because I feel like it will make my vision worse. And now I’m kinda having a hard time seeing at night with my 7 year old glasses
if someone was able to read a street sign before from the same distance and now can not, how can this be an optical ilusion?? You either can read ,or you cant
My eye specialist told me, since the cells in my lenses died (the ones that make your lenses bigger and smaller) I need to wear my multifocals 24/7 (except when showering, swimming or sleeping) or I am in danger of getting cataracts. But, why, when I take off my glasses does my eyelids feel stiff and feels like it wants to close?
What about using an eye patch on one eye to try to strengthen the other eye? One of my eyes is worse than the other, and I have a friend that has a lazy eye (or something that's long term, not a recent injury) who said he changes the patch to the good eye sometimes to help strengthen his bad eye.
Thanks for sharing this information. It would be wonderful if you did a video on cataract surgery. The why behind its needed, what to expect during the surgery, risks, consequences and recovery time.
They just came out with the first randomized study on them and it showed no effect. But the study was small and only looked at 2 hours of computer use and most of us are on devices for way longer. If you like them, wear them, but i never tell patients that they have to rush out and go buy them.
"Your brain is just getting used to..." using glasses is similar to any bracing or assistance device on any other part of the body. The longer you use them the more dependent your brain-body will be on them. This is why in physical therapy there is "least restrictive/assistive" device decisions to improve function. So I would argue that yes, if you wear a lens consistently for longer periods of time you will eventually become dependent on them because of normal brain-body adaptations. If wearing a minus lens the normal adaptation will be toward loss of distant vision.
Cannot believe the amount of people mistaking correlation and causation in these comments. "The more I wore glasses, the worse my eyes got"-- bro, have you considered that THE WORSE YOUR EYES WERE GETTING, the more you chose to wear glasses as your prescription got worse and worse on its own? Really seems like a bunch of people that can't seem to accept that their bad vision was going to develop the way it did with or without glasses. I'm someone who's had prescriptions take whole steps up at least once before, and I can definitely say that even two weeks after getting my new prescription, I can put on my old prescription and wonder how I was living like that, why my old one seems so much worse when I'd clearly been able to function with it just two weeks before. My eye didn't change after two weeks in fresh lenses! My brain just wasn't used to my vision being wrong anymore.
I have nearsightedness and have glasses but never wear them. I have been since my early 20s. Im in my 30s now. Is there anyway to fix my vision without surgery. I don't like the look of glasses and I can't do contacts. Glasses are also way overpriced and they mark them up a huge amount. I would rather have slightly blurry vision then spend $100s on glasses.
I have double vision when looking to the side and I just got glasses that correct it and now when I take off my glasses it's very hard for me to look around even looking straight gives me double vision now and it did not before
Hi ,I am 14 year old and i have prescription of 0.75 in my one eye and 1.75 in other for myopia Do i need to wear glasses while reading or are glasses necessary ? Please tell.
Hi! I'm not a doctor or anything, but after wearing glasses since I was 12 my vision is a lot worse. 6 months ago I stopped wearing glasses and started practicing the Bates method and my vision has improved a lot! Bates book 'Perfect eyesight without glasses' is available for free online and you can also watch Nathan Oxenfelds videos about it here on YT
No maam. You are wrong. I had a near perfect vision. Recently, I started using prescription glasses (mainly for my left eye). And now, my right eye is permanently blurry. Even on their eye tests, they confirmed that my right eye was 20/20. I never had any problems with my vision. My eyes did not get used to “clearer vision” I had clear vision. My eye became weaker. I don’t care about the papers you cite. The whole medical industry is a scam. I won’t want to be touched by a doctor unless I am in a life threatening situation. Hate you all ❤🎉
My personal experience, i stopped wearing them for 6months, i went from -2.00 to -1.5 whn i ran out of patience and went back for a pair. There is also the reading glass industry. Just like the medication they put you on that comes with 1000s of side-effects that they’ll recommend you to buy more medications to fix.😄. So better do your research and do what you feel is right. Just sayin’…
I like how everyone in the comment section is arguing this video, but she literally specializes in eye health, for 20+ years. I’m sick of all these wannabe doctors who think they know more than actual doctors.
Can someone explain why a child with myopia eye's worsen if they do not get glasses? I thinking I understand why regular lenses make myopia worse, BUT why does NOT getting glasses make it worse? Our pediatrician told us wearing or not wearing glasses would not make our 4 yr olds eyes progress; only that glasses help one see better.
I put on a pair of readers the other day to read a small label. I noticed they made my phone a little easier to see, but I'd always been fine without them. Ever since, text on my phone is blurry. 44 year old man. This is not in my head.
Idk if ill be able to get a reply now, but i recently got my glasses with -2 power in my right eye and -0.5 in my left eye. i really don't want to become dependent on my glasses or wear it for forever . so m so worried about it. do i have to keep wearing the glasses for lifetime? also i can see pretty well without my glasses
Personally I would try going without the glasses especially if your correction power is that small. As someone who has worn glasses for over 25 years I think that glasses do make your eyes more dependent and thus continue getting worse. I’m curently -8.25.
Also, my sister always had perfect vision....and when she was about 35 they gave her a slight prescription glasses and she said it's gotten a lot worse and she now needs to use them instead of just sometimes like in the beginning...
In 60' they made an experiment with animals, they put minus lenses (myopia lenses) on animals and all of them developed myopia. Then they put plus lenses on the same animals, all of them recovered from the myopic state.
3:30 Primate studies, REFRACTIVE STATES, from birth. First: I totally support your use of Atropine, on your children, to prevent entry into myopia, before they are actually nearsighted (negative state, for the normal eye). In fact these primate eyes, show that our eyes are highly responsive to their Average of Accommodation - in both directions. I know this is never taken seriously, in medicine, but as an Engineer, I take this objective science, very seriously. Even this data, suggests that we should be very careful with long term close work. But I also know that the only approach that will ever work, is "reducing accommodation for near", by using Atropine, while the child still has 20/20 (positive refractive state). It takes a wise mind, to accept the need for prevention, while your child still has 20/20. The "reasons", are in those primate experiments - in my engineering opinion.
From my experience, glasses worsen vision. I just start wearing glasses recently, about three weeks ago and i jist noticed that my vision is getting worst as i cajt even read things show on the television without having my glasses on. Maybe there is no science to back this but there is a lot of experiences.
@@DrRupaWong Wtf is wrong with you, why are you saying "it is common for our vision to get worse as we age" We are not talking about years we are talking about three weeks. I don't want to wear glasses but at 44 years old I wanted an Rx for contacts because I was hoping to get colored contacts. I just wanted them for very rare occasional use. I've never felt I needed glasses to drive and have never had an accident. My brain is so used to my nearsightedness that it's never been an issue. Since I have an astigmatism in both eyes I had to get special contacts and they don't make colored contacts for astigmatism in the U.S. anymore. They said maybe they would sell me some non-corrective colored contacts but only if I bought a bunch of corrective ones 1st. I asked if I could get contacts from Italy where they still make colored contacts for astigmatism. They said no. They also wouldn't even allow me to have my Rx so that I could order them elsewhere. Isn't this unethical? I finally started wearing the corrective contact samples but although they make my distance vision perfect, now 99% of what I use my eyes for, close up, is terrible. I don't want corrective glasses or contacts. I just want colored contacts to wear maybe 3 days out of the entire year. I paid about $300 since I don't have insurance. Is my only option to start all over with another opthalmologist? Thank you! I'm very sad because I have very small eyes and before regulations got so strict I had non-corrective colored contacts and was so happy. They made my eyes look big and beautiful. I feel like the doctor didn't care about my self-esteem at all.
I had eye surgery when lasik first came out Dr. Yee did it. It’s been about 20 years now. Had 20-10 vision when pau. Now my vision is not as good while watching tv was wondering if it’s possible to get lasik again?
A month before the end of 6th grade, I could barely see the chalkboard. I got my first glasses in the summer before 7th grade. I was afraid to be seen in them. I used them only sometimes in school. Then I wanted the strongest glasses possible so I wouldn't have a choice about whether to wear them. Then I saw a copy of "seeing without glasses" by Roberto Kaplan, at my local public library when I was 22. I read it. I barely did the eye exercises because I was afraid I was only allowed to see using my prescription glasses. Then I got an eye doctor to give me glasses 80% as strong as I was "supposed to need". Then I went for a year using glasses almost none of the time. Then I bought a trial lens kit and discovered that in bright sunlight I could see with less lens power than my previous prescription. I bought glasses with that prescription, online. That worked for awhile but now my eyesight seems to be getting worse. My last doctor-given prescription was -5.25 left eye, -4.75 right eye. I am 39 now. With trial lenses just now, I can sort of see with -3.75 in both eyes and I can see well with -4.5 in each eye. Should I try improving my eyesight again or should i just acquiesce to buying and using glasses with -4.50 in each eye? Yeah I suppose you are legally not allowed to tell me what to do but I won't tell the eye care industry police if you tell me what to do anyway.
I have found that stopping my birth control pill 2 years ago has improved my vision(stopped due to migraines). I mostly used them for reading, long hours at the computer and night driving. Infact, for almost 3 months, I have not worn them at all, not even for these activities. My work-load on the computer has decreased dramatically, so maybe that's whats helping?
Doctors are trained to see the body mechanically, like plumbing. In reality the body is a complex of systems. Eyesight is a visual system that includes not just the eye structures but also optic nerves and brain receptors. Whereas glasses may not affect the eyes per se, the brain adapts to glasses, so it is possible visual acuity could be worse without them after a period of adaptation.
My power was -1.25 about three years ago ..i wear glasses occasionally that's why my power was same till now i think..but after purchasing crizal lens i tend to put them oftenly and without them i am feeling my vision got worsen over the time
Everybody warned me that if I got glasses I would never be able to read without them. So for years I resisted. But eventually I got glasses and they were exactly right. Now without them I can’t read anything.
I also regret wearing them. Me and my sister both had about the same vision when we were young. I thought I was doing the right thing by wearing them. She didn't. She is still doing fine. If it doesn't weakens your vision, why you have to change every 2 years? In 20 years you're almost blind without glasses.

Hi Dr. Rupa,
I must dispute you on solid scientific grounds.
( Technically it is a control system. )
That means, that prevention is possible, if the mature person, will wear a +2 diopter for all close work, when he is a 20/50, on his Snellen.
Then slowly, he will get his Snellen back to 20/20.
The minus lens makes your refractive state, even more negative, always.
Tragically.
Even you use Atropine to prevent accommodation, on your children.
Good answer
Ok you are right. I wear glasses and I wonder why each time o visit my option the lens has to be increased for adjustment.if the glases don't weaken the eyes why do they have to increase lence after evert two years? Kindly communicate I need some help
Myopia is usually caused by having a too long eyeball or too steeply curved cornea. Glasses can't affect those directly, they can only affect the muscles that control the lens of the eye.
I have a question man my astigmatism is mild
It’s like this
0.25
0.25
0.25
0.75
My astigmatism is very mild and my issue is light glare, starburst and halos and the way light looks is different than before
Do you think if I wear glasses it’ll get worst ?
Also note that I’m not far sighted or nearsighted and can see very far or super close
What do you think ?
@G E T R E K T This is the camera myth. It is not science.

I wear a plus to go from 20/50, to 20/20, and keep it there!

Wearing your glasses does not make your eyes weaker. It makes your myopia (shortsightedness) worse.

Ive never met not one person!! Not one. Who had better eye vision after wearing glasses. No one. Every time someone takes theyre glasses off they can hardly see anything. Worse then ever. Glasses are only good for ppl w serious eye problems. Not poor vision.
So true , it's been two years now since i went to the eyedoctor with my sister he gave me -0.75 prescreption and my sister -0.25 i got my glasses and i started wearing em every single day my sister didn't get them at all she was okay with her vision one year passed and i felt like my vision got worst and i couldn't even see clearly with my glasses i went to my doctor and he gave me -2 prescreption which is bad my sister who didn't wear glasses her vision stayed stable and she doesn't need to wear em and here i'm i got stuck with glasses :(

Should wear or not

The break means looking at far distance things and not continuing to look at the phone, computer, etc.

Whenever close work is done without the protection of reading glasses, it is important to:
The centers of the eyeglass lenses should not be any farther apart than that distance.
.

@@Amankumar-ti5lj You need reading glasses, read my previous post.
Reading glasses causes your eyeball to stretch to adjust to the light being focused in the eye. This is called axial elongation. When your eyeball is stretched it causes your nearsightedness to worsen.

This is incorrect. I had lasik 20 years ago and fixed my vision, but recently it started getting worse again. I had glasses for a few years that did improve my eyesight, but I could still see well without them. 20/20 without glasses, 20/15 with glasses. 😀
You'd be surprised how many people believe this one! Sounds your prescription has been super stable, which is awesome.
At least go get your exam and see what they have to say. You can make a decision from there. Best wishes!
People are just used to having shitty vision. Thats what happens when you dont wear glasses
This is such a well put video, straight to the point
@@juandelahoz4577 Thank you😊
if someone was able to read a street sign before from the same distance and now can not, how can this be an optical ilusion?? You either can read ,or you cant
Im 15yr old and i have really light myopia around -0.2-0.5 so should i throw my glasses ?
Definitely not!
Same, my left eye is double of my right .. I don't know what to do
@@toshikadwivedi7850 me too
I can't see things far away so should I also wear them all the time or just while studying or watching TV
Thanks for sharing this information. It would be wonderful if you did a video on cataract surgery. The why behind its needed, what to expect during the surgery, risks, consequences and recovery time.
On my list to film next month! I just did one on eyelid surgeries (blepharoplasty) and plan on doing the same thing for cataract surgery
What’s your opinion about blue light glasses?
Ophtalmologists should not be allowed to treat eyesight problems. They have zero knowledge that would have helped. 😢
Thank you for sharing and watching! :)
I have double vision when looking to the side and I just got glasses that correct it and now when I take off my glasses it's very hard for me to look around even looking straight gives me double vision now and it did not before
Hi ,I am 14 year old and i have prescription of 0.75 in my one eye and 1.75 in other for myopia
Do i need to wear glasses while reading or are glasses necessary ?
Thank you so much!
Can someone explain why a child with myopia eye's worsen if they do not get glasses? I thinking I understand why regular lenses make myopia worse, BUT why does NOT getting glasses make it worse? Our pediatrician told us wearing or not wearing glasses would not make our 4 yr olds eyes progress; only that glasses help one see better.
you are taught to say all those things so, i don't blame you if you're saying wearing glasses doesn't deteriorate your vision strength.
Thank you - great information!
I am nearsighted. Can you please give me some advices on how to improve eyesight?
Your brain likes clearer vision so in other words your eyes get worse ... smh unbelievable
Also, my sister always had perfect vision....and when she was about 35 they gave her a slight prescription glasses and she said it's gotten a lot worse and she now needs to use them instead of just sometimes like in the beginning...
ever thought about why only humans wear glasses. no animal wears them. how come?
In 60' they made an experiment with animals, they put minus lenses (myopia lenses) on animals and all of them developed myopia.
Then they put plus lenses on the same animals, all of them recovered from the myopic state.
Interesting question to ponder! Thanks for sharing.
I appreciate you being here!

Primate studies, REFRACTIVE STATES, from birth.
I'm so sorry your vision is getting worse. It is common for our vision to get worse as we age. Thank you for being here!
@@DrRupaWong Wtf is wrong with you, why are you saying "it is common for our vision to get worse as we age" We are not talking about years we are talking about three weeks. Stop promoting this bullshit, I myself need glasses. Since i was 12 i havent used them (im 21 now) and my eyes went from -3 something to -1.5. Wearing glasses makes your eyes lazier. Eyes dont worsen significantly over 3 weeks "dr" wong
This video is life saving thank you so much ma'am 🙏
@@Baba_Yaga96-ly4om thank you for watching!😊
Can't just wear colored contact for cosplay? Do sure it is just easier since... you don't need corrective coloured contact?
I had eye surgery when lasik first came out Dr. Yee did it. It’s been about 20 years now. Had 20-10 vision when pau. Now my vision is not as good while watching tv was wondering if it’s possible to get lasik again?
no...try icl
Maybe because of aging?
I am speaking from Bangladesh. My eye power - 1. Do I have to wear glasses all the time? Will the eyes ever be fixed?
Yeah I suppose you are legally not allowed to tell me what to do but I won't tell the eye care industry police if you tell me what to do anyway.
when i go to sleep without my glasses and wake up my vision come back for like a few seconds.
@Black Hole Thank you, and no, I don't wear glasses
It makes your vision worse but if you need them you need them.
I am 13 years old and I have a prescription of -1.25. Should I wear my glasses regularly?
My eyes get worse every day how do I stop it? I want my eyesight to improve
Thanks Doc, just curious, what is your view on corrective laser correction that ommits the use of glasses. And why don't people opt for it?
Explained wonderfully ❤👁❤
@@interactive1178 I am so glad you enjoyed ☺️
