Finally here it is, probably the most requested video on the Tahoe yet! I picked up a Uhaul trailer and hauled the Trans Am around town. This was the first time testing out the towing airbags, as well as the rebuilt 4l60e with an actually load on it. I don't want any surprises when it's finally time to tow the Camaro to the track!
haven't made it thru the video yet, but I tow with my obs 96, as long at tranny temps stay good. 4l60 tows fine. I will say I've towed a 3rg gen with a uhaul trailer and the nose weight is to far forward, and how their over the tire hold downs work, I couldn't center the car. it would work much better if you got your own car trailer if it's like mine.
My Pops had a 2002 chevy suburban z71 he bought it brand new off the lot in 2002 The truck has a bit over 400k and its still in outstanding condition he always kept up with the paint and engine maintenance and he still tows his 34 foot RV trailer best SUV
GMC 04 Sierra Denali. 450.000 miles and hauled a 30’ ft trailer weighing 10,000 lbs. for a while. Lost the T-case in Jan. This year. Not a bad vehicle.
My avalanche tows cars all the time, 02 with 245k miles, same motor and trans you got, I believe in you! I did my rear main last weekend, used your trans removal video to do it, huge help. Thanks for making videos
On vehicle being towed I would put trans in neutral, apply parking brake, move forward just a tab more, neutral, then park. This will take stress off drivetrain from back and forth movement while being towed, and allow brakes to help hold car still.
Years ago I thought nothing of towing about 7900 pounds (including the 6 x 12 U Haul trailer) with my 1994 Chevy Astro with the 4L60E (original) at the 250k mile mark. It was for work and I went throughout multiple states, mountain passes in 117 degree weather (with the a/c on) and cold weather as well, and that car never gave me a lick of trouble. I drove it very conservatively and it was not fast, but it got the job done. I'm chuckling at all of the drama just to tow a car (something I also did with my Astro many times thinking nothing of it) you're doing with your Tahoe.
I've towed a couple cars with my 1997 Ford Expedition 5.4L 4x4. Since I'm rather inexperienced, I always have another pair of eyes with me to watch the trailer in case things get screwy. Even with 300K on the clock and its E4OD/4R100 transmission never being touched before, it does a great job. I do want to add a backup camera like your setup, seems like the perfect way to line up a trailer. Overall, a good investment for $500.
I had an 03 Tahoe with oversized tires 285/70/17 and a 95 Camaro z28 I pulled from southeast Kansas to Minnesota. It did fantastic, no issues or concerns. I had 165K on the motor and tranny. These Tahoe’s are built to last, plain and simple. I now have an 2005 Tahoe z71 2WD with over 251,000 miles and it is so smooth, does not burn oil or leak fluids. I use Mobil 1 with Lucas at every oil change. No complaints!
The U-Haul brakes are surge brakes. As the weight transfers forward as the towing vehicle brakes, the piston in the reservoir forces brake fluid to the drums and it slows the trailer/load down. As you accelerate the opposite occurs and the shoes release off the drums.
Uhaul trailers have surge brakes. They work by sensing deceleration. The harder the decel, the harder the brakes will apply. Personally I'm not a fan of Uhaul trailers. They are unusually heavy, and they don't allow for long wheelbase,wide or heavy vehicles. I'm trailer shopping now. I'm torn between a nice open car or spending the extra money for an enclosed. And I second the air bag kit. It's a crazy easy install. I ran the hoses individually, and routed the air lines and Schrader valves to the rear. I drilled two holes in the metal bracket that holds the trailer wiring connector. Easier access, and less chance of it getting damaged by the tire or road debris in the wheelwell.
Just did it in my 220,000 4.8 yukon bro from Ellijay Ga.to New Orleans!...went up and down the mountains with no problem and I'm on 24's!...no airbags just some duralast shocks I got from autozone!...she never dropped below going uphill!...LS engines are the best EVER built and these Yukons/Tahoes are the best GM has built thus far!...just add a cheap little transmission cooler it real easy!...500+ miles!!!....and I used the same car hauler from uhaul cost me $300 bucks!

I pull a 4500 lb camper with my suburban with 207000 miles and pulls great I have the 6l80 transmission I absolutely love it with the same air bags running 35psi in them wouldn't change my set up any also I went to drilled and slotted rotors all the way around with ceramic brakes added a electric brake controller and couldn't be happier with the results

Can’t kill the 5.3L engine. Mine has 275,000 miles still going strong. Towed couple times with it 1,000+ miles. I use the tow button to get started and when I get to the cruising speed I shut it off so It can go into overdrive and save fuel. Towing gets 10 miles to the gallon
I’ve had 2 Tahoe’s and although they were awesome vehicles my 02 sequoia has been a beast when it comes to towing. I actually pulled my buddies suburban to a trans shop to get rebuilt.
Towing with my 2004 Tahoe I have the air suspension from factory in the rear and I had to change out the rear air shock a while ago because they all rip at some point and most people opt to get rid of that system when it's time to change the shocks but I'm glad I did not because it works great so far when towing but my truck may be the only freak Tahoe that still has that on board and actually working it seems like from what I have read on different websites. Also when towing having it in 3rd not drive so the over drive will not engage is what you want to do because in over drive all the extra weight can hurt the trans so 3rd is what is best for it.
My 2k Yukon had a 4-pin plug that looks factory. It has the round trailer connector in the bumper just like that Tahoe and a 4-pin coming out of the wiring harness behind the bumper.
I owned a ‘92 CK 1500 Z71 extended cab long bed before my 1999 Tahoe 4x4. All I can say is my ‘92 towed a lot better (car trailer) than my Tahoe safety wise. My Tahoe has the tow package and sway bar though the shorter wheelbase impacts the handling. I am selling it and buying another 1994-98 Z71 pickup.
I've been told the gmt900 brake calipers are a direct fit and are huge improvement for gmt800. I need to replace the engine in my suburban. Do you think i should swap in a 6.0L long block or a fresh 5.3L long block? The trans was rebuilt less than a year before i bought the Burb. Engine has almost 360k miles. I plan to tow long distance with it when finding future projects.
The brakes that uhaul uses are called surge brakes, the tongue of the trailer is a 2 peice unit and it basically uses the trailers weight pushing against the ball to push on a master cylender to slow it down, the best way to get those brakes to really work is to be reasonably aggressive with the trucks brakes, they are better than no brakes overall, but not amazing, but not everyone renting a uhaul has a trailer brake controller, and without that, electric brakes will do nothing,
Not sure what your worried about, had an 04 long box,v6, 2wd, 3.42 gear ratio. It towed another long box on a 20 foot flat deck no trailer brakes with out a problem scales said 6800lbs when we crossed them. Always drive GMs they work, and when they don't work, they still work well enough to get you home
Great video Matt! I’m actually looking at a 2002 Escalade tomorrow. It has a 5.3 4l60e and 3:73 gears in back. I was thinking of going a bit newer like a 2007 model to get the 6.2 but if I can get the 2002 for a good price I might do that. So this video helps cuz I will be towing some with it.
One thing to keep into account is the weight of the uhaul trailers. Those things are made out of galvanized steel and weigh 2400 pounds. They are no joke.
Theres a spring/piston type mechanism in the trailer where the reservoir is attached and when you brake and the trailer pushes forward into the hitch it will engage the trailer brakes. Only reason i know that is from going to school for a cdl lol
I done something similar up the grapevine(California) with a 04 gmc 4.8; would I do it again, not with the set up I had it with. Electric brakes on the trailer would have been a big help & a tranny cooler. I learned a lot from that trip and honestly I was young and dumb and could have killed some one. Towed again recently with a 2006 4.3. Got the proper set up and everything went well. The truck did okay, I mean I didn’t have passing power but it was able to hold speed at 55mph up the hill.
I towed the exact same car and dolly with my 2009 Dodge Dakota 4.7L. It was at it's max. But sweet spot at 65 mph. Back end was hanging low. 130 miles no problem.
You need to upgrade your front calipers and rotors to the newer GM truck setup. It bolts right up without any modifications and it’s a night and day difference. It one of the most noticeable upgrades I’ve done to my 04 Yukon XL.
LsxMatt - You want to go with the front brake parts of a 3rd generation Tahoe, Yukon or Suburban. All the same from years 2007 to 2014. Much more beefy brakes that bolt right up to our SUVs. There is a guy on TH-cam that did this same upgrade and he also talks about the huge improvement. This would also make great content for all your Tahoe subscriber base!!
None of such trailers here in Europe do have electric braking.. it's even not allowed because it's unsafe, especially downhill like our hills in Switzerland. People do not understand that going down a mountain you can fry your trailer brakes like this using the controller to let the trailer brake more than necessary. The push style braking is far superior and it does not need anything on the car to make them work and they do work way more than you think.... Of course, like any brake system, they need service and maintenance. Even trucks do not use the trailer to brake the rig, they use the engine brake to do that going down a hill. Most trailers I know and had during the last 20 years do only have drum brakes so overheating them is really easy and should be avoided. I trailer a lot with my 12' Durango up to 3,5t (max allowed for this car here) and cars on trailer and I'm really impressed how good the 5,7l Hemi and the 6 speed still work even though the 6 speed has the most annoying long 1st Gear one can think of. It's the full opposite to the 4l60/700r4 haha. It also has the lift struts which pumps up the rear to get it level. It's indeed a feature you should always order or have if you are towing! Good Video making this clear... I think what also a lot of people do disregard is the positioning of the weight on the trailer and hitch/tongue weight (is it called like this in english?) Use your tongue weight fully, its there for a reason and makes the whole thing more stable. I see a lot of people towing the car the wrong way so that the heavy part (Engine side) is on the back just because it was more easy to pull it up on the axle with the winch. That's so wrong and dangerous..... it's pulling weight from the hitch lifting your back of the car.....
I recently picked up a 2002 Yukon Denali (6.0L, 4L65E, 3.73's & AWD) to haul around my Typhoon with. Don't have a trailer yet (been bugging my buddies dad to borrow his) but I'd love to pick one up next year. I never liked Uhaul car trailers though when I had other vehicles. The car IMO sits too far forward on their trailers.
cool deal , i do this all the time with car haulers and auction cars as well as my travel trailer all at 225k all original 5.3 tahoe but i use 30 pounds of air in the bags.

ENGINE INFO: Hi, does anyone know if the 2002 Tahoe z71 5.3 engine is a Push Rod engine??? I'm looking at one for $4700, 178K miles and VERY well taken cared of but the driver does not even know if its a pushrod engine. I hear and read the Vortec pushrod engines are VERY good and last a long time, reliable also.
Those transmissions don't like to tow period , that car and trailer unfortunately will murder that trans in quick time... been there done that 5 times ...before I decided I didn't know everything and swapped in the 80e...3 years later still was best mod ever made
Wonder what kinda temps your trans is hitting with the cooler you installed? If you plan on towing a decent amount you may want to invest in trans temp gauge. Not sure if the GMT800’s have a trans temp PID thru pcm but if they do you could use a scan tool as makeshift temp gauge just to see how temps are with typical car/trailer load.
LsxMatt I’ve only had one GMT800 which I drove all of 10 miles to pull engine to swap into my Sonoma don’t remember all what those PCM’s do but I know my ‘11 Sierra displays it on dash

U-Haul does not sell their used equipment. Also, don't count on the 4L60-E Transmission in that Tahoe to last very long if you're going to be towing anything but the lightest trailer. I don't care what the Owners Manual or Tow hitch says, try towing something on the upper limits of what the Manual says and you'll be in a Transmission Shop pdq.

What car did you tell them you were towing? Around here they won't let you tow much more than a go cart. I have an F150 and about the only car they'll accept is a 1985 Chevette.
I hate those uhaul car haulers they put waay to much tongue weight on the the trailer. Get ur own trailer, distribute the weight where its mostly over the trailer axles and you wont even need those airbags at all. Plus itll tow way better i had a 3000lbs car on a uhaul trailer that felt way heavier than a 5000lbs truck on my own trailer. And thats with an IRS Expedition. But I do understand you gotta do what you gotta do trailers aint cheap, thanks for the video
On these tahoes, the blend door motor is under the dash, more or less behind the center console. Pretty easy repair with normal hand tools. Personally, mine quit the other day so I just kicked the hell out of the dash to get it working again lol

Did this with my 200k tahoe a few weeks ago. Towed a car 3.5 hours each way to the tuner. Handled it like a champ!

My Tahoe has 316k original engine and trans, I tow with it constantly I have even hauled an f250 with it just a couple months ago, still going strong

I replaced my broken 7-way connector with a combo 7 and 4-way unit: Hopkins #40920. It twists right in, and you no longer need to use an adapter.

You're right Matt. I've always felt that generation Tahoe brakes were barely up to the task. Stilling daily driving my 04 Tahoe 237,00 miles.

I trailer a lot with my 12' Durango up to 3,5t (max allowed for this car here) and cars on trailer and I'm really impressed how good the 5,7l Hemi and the 6 speed still work even though the 6 speed has the most annoying long 1st Gear one can think of. It's the full opposite to the 4l60/700r4 haha. It also has the lift struts which pumps up the rear to get it level. It's indeed a feature you should always order or have if you are towing! Good Video making this clear... I think what also a lot of people do disregard is the positioning of the weight on the trailer and hitch/tongue weight (is it called like this in english?) Use your tongue weight fully, its there for a reason and makes the whole thing more stable. I see a lot of people towing the car the wrong way so that the heavy part (Engine side) is on the back just because it was more easy to pull it up on the axle with the winch. That's so wrong and dangerous..... it's pulling weight from the hitch lifting your back of the car.....

I recently picked up a 2002 Yukon Denali (6.0L, 4L65E, 3.73's & AWD) to haul around my Typhoon with. Don't have a trailer yet (been bugging my buddies dad to borrow his) but I'd love to pick one up next year. I never liked Uhaul car trailers though when I had other vehicles. The car IMO sits too far forward on their trailers.
cool deal , i do this all the time with car haulers and auction cars as well as my travel trailer all at 225k all original 5.3 tahoe but i use 30 pounds of air in the bags.

ENGINE INFO: Hi, does anyone know if the 2002 Tahoe z71 5.3 engine is a Push Rod engine??? I'm looking at one for $4700, 178K miles and VERY well taken cared of but the driver does not even know if its a pushrod engine. I hear and read the Vortec pushrod engines are VERY good and last a long time, reliable also.
I've pulled a 10k lb skid loader with my 2003 chevy avalanche and yes it's a 1/2 ton and has 5.3, and wow does it sag a hell of a lot.

Those transmissions don't like to tow period , that car and trailer unfortunately will murder that trans in quick time... been there done that 5 times ...before I decided I didn't know everything and swapped in the 80e...3 years later still was best mod ever made
Rear chain can go through the d-ring and hook back into itself to tighten it up.
I had to tow a Yukon XL 2500 no motor or trans with that same trailer barely fit. Had to air down the tires just to get the straps on

Wonder what kinda temps your trans is hitting with the cooler you installed? If you plan on towing a decent amount you may want to invest in trans temp gauge. Not sure if the GMT800’s have a trans temp PID thru pcm but if they do you could use a scan tool as makeshift temp gauge just to see how temps are with typical car/trailer load.
From what I understand the trans temp gauge is already wired in. All I need to do is swap my cluster, or retrofit one in.
LsxMatt I’ve only had one GMT800 which I drove all of 10 miles to pull engine to swap into my Sonoma don’t remember all what those PCM’s do but I know my ‘11 Sierra displays it on dash

U-Haul does not sell their used equipment. Also, don't count on the 4L60-E Transmission in that Tahoe to last very long if you're going to be towing anything but the lightest trailer. I don't care what the Owners Manual or Tow hitch says, try towing something on the upper limits of what the Manual says and you'll be in a Transmission Shop pdq.

Never hook your chains like this, if they drag over a dip in the road it can lift the hook enough to disconnect them!
If you don't use the Tow/haul button in this vehicle, you will lose your transmission. Not if but when. Trust me.
Why is that? Because when I tow with my Yukon it shifts way harder when on Tow/Haul, in the city I just put it in 3rd gear and tow as such

What car did you tell them you were towing? Around here they won't let you tow much more than a go cart. I have an F150 and about the only car they'll accept is a 1985 Chevette.

I hate those uhaul car haulers they put waay to much tongue weight on the the trailer. Get ur own trailer, distribute the weight where its mostly over the trailer axles and you wont even need those airbags at all. Plus itll tow way better i had a 3000lbs car on a uhaul trailer that felt way heavier than a 5000lbs truck on my own trailer. And thats with an IRS Expedition. But I do understand you gotta do what you gotta do trailers aint cheap, thanks for the video

Make sure not to tow in overdrive. That 4l60 will not hold up long if you do

Sounds like the blend door motor in the dash. Usually if one side blows hot and the other cold thats the culprit.
On these tahoes, the blend door motor is under the dash, more or less behind the center console. Pretty easy repair with normal hand tools. Personally, mine quit the other day so I just kicked the hell out of the dash to get it working again lol
Could also be a the heater core in the front needs to be flushed
