Wow - I never thought the two books reflect left and right brain! I share that same experience when I started my iChing readings years ago. I started with the Wilhelm Bayne's book was esoteric and difficult to understand. BUT I learned to read between the lines using my intuition to decipher what I needed to know. I bought the Karcher book many years later and found it easier to read.
I use both books and agree with your comments . Nice to get some confirmation independent of my own findings . However i also use the Willhelm /Baynes version which gives a bit more than the Wilhelm black paperback . I have a kindle W/B version on my i pad .
Fantastic Peter! And also nice for me to know others work in similar lines. Great to have those extra resources at hand. I have some online resources I use as well to keep an open mind to different ways of seeing the same thing. Always useful! :-)
I Ching Cafe currently looking more at the trigrams and what they mean. The basic 8 trigrams tell a story then so lower trigram and. Upper trigram. Then when combined tell a different story as well. So exploring the differences . Look foward to the next post from you .
I also like these two books. I am collecting different English translations of I Ching. So far I have collected 10 versions. Just wondering that do you know how many versions of English translation ? Thank you!!
Thank you so much for sharing! A wonderful idea to form a collection of I Ching books. I am sorry that I don't know how many English versions are available, so please share with us if you find out. 🙏
What’s your opinion on the Alfred Huang translation? This is the only other version I can find for my Kindle, I’ve already got the Willhelm/Baynes version for it.
Thanks for the great question! I am going to add his book to my list as I have never worked with it before. I see he has a Taoist approach so I would imagine it to be quite similar to Stephen Karcher's approach. I have found using I Ching books on a Kindle to be really challenging, so one of the few types of books I go paperback on. Thanks!
Thank you very much, it will definitely help me choose. Just one humble comment: Neanderthals were misunderstood for a very long time to be more primitive than the homosapiens, turning out to be not true! New research showing, they were probably more advanced, they had language and all.. and they were smart (smarter than Homosapiens).. but they probably lacked the aggressive fighting skills. The other thing is we all carry Neanderthal genes, so we are partly them.
Is Stephen Karcher still alive and well? Seems he's no longer active online. His FB has been inactive for a decade, and no responses come from emails sent over the years. I'd love to get his books as ebooks for my Kindle, but none are available for purchase.
Thanks so much for asking. I don't actually know. And I went on the same search as you several years ago, including sending emails and no response. If he is still here then he is in retreat I would suspect. 🙏
It seems you can't just buy and use one version of the book and I have several. The I Ching Workbook by RL Wing, The Toaist I Ching translated by Thomas Ckeary, The Pocket I Ching, The Richard Wilhelm Translation, rendered into English by Cary F Baynes and W F Boardman, a few other somewhere around my home. Learned about it from university students in Adelaide Australia when I was supposed to be a student art teacher for high school. Dropped out. Used it at 19 because I was trying to get rich. Got the hexagram, 48 line 5 at 30 which explained a lot about my life and everyone else's. Far superior to religious books like The Old and New Testaments, The Qu'ran and that one for the Hindus. I often go through them and laugh that they're all hexagram experiences. The expulsion from Eden, Jesus on the Cross and resurrection. It's basically the computer code of like. Pity more people don't know about it or use it. The hexagram explain wars, peace and how to stop politics from going bad. Best book ever written by the human mind.
Thanks for sharing! My only thought is add this one to the 'check it out' list. Looks interesting, especially the 'New Interpretation' one, yet sadly not on Kindle. Really appreciate this suggestion. What are your thoughts on it? Helpful for you?
Hi just to help you out, and to help you with your channel, the best I ching is the Shambala version translated by Thomas Cleary. By far the best, and if you get the taoist Classics they also helps translate the translation if you know what I mean.

Hey I'm new to this I just brought my first lucky chinese coin so will I need 2 books then the black book an the one on your left is one English the other chinese
Well done Karl! They are both English books, Richard Wilhelm's is translated from German. They are both complex to read so go easy on yourself. There are many books that simplify the I Ching, which is very useful, yet I found working slowly through Wilhelm's I Ching to give me a richer experience.
Thanks so much Kevin! Re pronunciation, I do know and have made the call that accessibility to the I Ching through a more direct pronunciation would be better than 'jing' with unfamiliarity. At this stage I am just happy to get 'ee' instead of 'ai' as in iPhone! :-)
Actually depending on the chinese dialect, its either pronounced as "Yi Ching" in mandarin or "Yik King" in cantonese. Yi meaning change, and Ching means book or scroll. 易經
One learns Chinese and gets a Chinese version. It’s not very useful unless you’re very fluent in Chinese and understand the context etc. Even for a native Chinese scholar it takes 50 or so years to properly study the book.
@@IChingCafe i ordered the Richard Wilhelm version with intro from Jung after watching your video. Its due to arrive in a few days. I recently became interested in i ching after reading Man in the High Castle by Philip K Dick. I bought the first book i came across which was Brian Browne Walkers the I Ching or Book of Changes, it think its OK but I suspect its a bit on the brief side? Do you know of this book is it a good one in your opinion? Isint it wonderful when the answers make sense!
Oh wow that's fantastic! What a lovely journey to go on. Brian Browne Walker is an excellent interpretation and a great resource. What I would do is use the two together. Wilhelm is more technical and indepth, and the Walker version can help provide the broader perspective. I have used them together myself, great combo. Best wishes!

@@quinnhogue3252 for me the I Ching is a tool to help us communicate with our higher intelligence or soul or whatever name makes sense for you. If you have been feeling confused with the I Ching, two thoughts come to mind - firstly, it may be that you are asking the same question over and over without fully applying what you learn first. Have done that myself plenty of times. Secondly, it might be that you need to invest more focus on being still with yourself and making space for that soft inner voice to get louder. There is nothing better than daily meditation to help with that. As that voice gets stronger and more confident, I am sure the I Ching will sing louder too. Hope that can help! Best wishes.

I Ching Praxis by Ra Un Nefer Amen is the best one IMHO and any serious student in the West should study it.
The Stephen Karcher one is very good.
