    Finally, I find someone in Texas, I have a Great Pyrenees, Blu is he’s name, and I also live in TEXAS,
    I keep my baby inside in the summer, even though we have a creek at the end of our property, and with all this rain, that we’ve been having, he’s in heaven, Following you guys from now on 👏🏼

    We live in the Salem Plateau of Missouri. It gets hot AND cold. The Pyrenees rescues WE get, have different coat thicknesses. Our last one, Rae Dawn Chong, had an extremely thick coat. Our current baby…Polar Bear, has a much lighter, straighter coat.
    Our dogs roam and get a good sprint on 3 of the 6 acres. With deciduous trees, dug holes, porch skirts, and Doggie doors...the dogs take care of themselves. Polar won't stay inside, so I hose her belly and feet. The other dogs go into the watering hole but she doesn't like heavy water on her fur. She also does not like to step over and into the Kiddie pool wall, so I have to have a very shallow or sloped pan of water for her to cool off in.

    Our dogs dig dirt bath holes… shade, water,water and water. They are pretty slow moving when hot.
    The undercoat also acts as an insulation… never ever shave or clip. If you pat them they feel warm if you reverse Pat them you can feel the coolness underneath. Nature is amazing.

    FACT = ALL DOGS suffer in heat & humidity days ..... BUT, Darker dogs unable to get shade and enough water will suffer more. People who think they have OUR ISSUE with sweating are WRONG .... dogs have NO SWEAT GLANDS and rely on Panting - rapid respiration to cool their core temperature ! They must have what is critical ... FOOD, WATER & SHELTER .... to survive ... and PERSONAL INTERACTION from their humans is ESSENTIAL ! Especially with Pyrs !! The Pyrenees is a very smart, cunning, observant & emotionally dialed in creature .... He or She will depend on those that CARE FOR THEM whether inside or outside dogs they may be !!! Mine is a female and the best dog I have ever known, had and I am very much her best friend. This video is very good in it's showing the Breed and it's overall tendencies and attributes .... adding to it I would say PYRENEES NEED ROOM TO ROAM, GUARD & PRACTICE LONE OR SOCIAL BEHAVIOR INTUITIVE TO THIS BREED. Love them, just love them. jj

    I came to this video because my mother is always texting me telling me she seen on the news about dogs dying outside in the heat and that our great Pyrenees can't be outside more than 20 minutes. We've went back and fourth about this and I figured I had to find a good video to show her explaining the breed more. Ours was born on a farm and she was born outside in Virginia. We live in Pennsylvania, it does into the high 90s but she has shade and water, and when I try to bring her inside she will push to stay outside. She's loves it. We brush her everyday or so and they do shed a ton!!

      Thank you for this! I live in south Florida and just got a 12 week old Pyr, and I was worried about that. I do notice she loves to lay directly on the tile or in the dirt (when outside). She doesn’t love her dog bed. I did get her a cool pad, which she does seem to like.

    I'm in Ohio. I've had three Pyrenees. None of them liked water, for anything except drinking. All three of them have been pets, so guarding livestock was unnecessary. All three of them avoided going out in the rain. A trip to the dog beach doesn't involve a towel; as long as the land side of the beach is fenced in (and whoever maintains the beach has been diligent about clearing the last vestiges of poison ivy out of all recesses). I think, as puppies,they disliked getting baths. Later, as adults, their baths became harder to manage and infrequent. As a result, an inside pet reaches an equalibrium, where they don't accumulate dirt, any faster than shedding occurs.

    Their sweat glands are in their feet, so having a trough where they can get in and cool their feet is such a benefit to them! Our big Toby likes to get in and dig dig dig the water! 😅 The benefit for us is that he's washing all that NC red mud off his legs!

    • @kitanihunter6735
      @kitanihunter6735 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Don't shave her! If she's got the double coat from her GP side, her hair may not grow back the same or it may grow back patchy if you shave her. Brush your baby everyday, and invest in a GOOD slicker brush with long bristles! 😅 It's a lot of hair but trust, it helps to brush everyday!

    • @WillowRidgeAcres

    What do you do about mosquitoes with the water troughs? I'm considering moving somewhere warmer but trying to figure out if it's suitable for my boyyyyy. And mosquitoes in standing water is a big concern.

    • @WillowRidgeAcres
      @WillowRidgeAcres  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the summer we have to change out the water in their troughs just about once per day since the dogs get in the water to cool off, they get the water pretty dirty. Since we change the water out that often we don't have much of an issue with mosquitos in the water troughs. We do get mosquitos pretty bad from the dense woods next to our property though.

    Video is a waste of time. Simply give your dog the opportunity to choose where it wants to be. Make sure there is plenty of shade outside as well as clean water. Install a doggie door so that the dog can come and go as he pleases. I've had double-coated dogs in the tropics for years with no issues.

    In hot weather,..
    You keep the undercoat brushed out if you can.
    Their bodies DO KNOW the environment they are in. And react to the same.
    Pyrs have been working from Newfoundland (a breed they are part of) to Texas. And have been doing it for some thousands of years.
    Climate is not our problem really.
    People knowing we are Nocturnal, and Awake All Night IS 😏
    ... people are New, Pyrs Aren't 🥰🐕‍🦺🥰
    THEY ARE A SPECIAL BREED 🖖

    #1 DO NOT SHAVE THESE DOGS, their undercoat insulation works both ways, not only does it keep them warm, it also keeps them cool.
    #2 BIG ASS FAN, I leave a 3ft diameter fan blowing across the porch in the shade where they can cool off (and across their water to keep the bugs out)
    #3 Kiddie Pool, keep a kiddie pool full of clean water in the shade. (if it's gonna be real hot, throw in ~50# of ice!)
    #4 if you can, LET THEM IN THE AC!!! Do you like being outside on a 100 degree humid day?!?!?!?!?
    #5 Rake out that undercoat! Get the loose hair out, lowers matting and helps their underecoat do it's job better!
    Truthfully, if you need a LGD in a hot environment look at a breed better suited for the heat, like a Anatolian Shepard, Pyrs aren't good hot weather dogs!!!! (mine spend the summer pretty much inside on the couch by their own choice.)
