We live in Western North Carolina, where there’s a huge population of brown bears. They are just everywhere. Our Livestock Protection Dog, Gracie, protects my spouse from bears like a champ! Gets between her and the bear. Raises up and just…ROARS. This freaks out the bear enough to make it just … leave. Fabulous animal! Love her to bits.
We got Groot when he was a 13 months old, still acting like a puppy. We live in a townhouse so it’s a good thing he was the runt and only weighs 90 pounds. He doesn’t love baths but the groomer never had a problem nor did we when we wash him outside in the summer. He looks at us like we’re torturing him the whole time. Takes forever to dry. Almost as loving as the Goldens I’ve had and my wife is totally in love with him. Kids in the neighborhood call him snowball and he lets them do almost anything they want. Great dog
my male Brutus was also the runt so he was the last one of his litter. I'm glad he's smaller because he still jumps up on us. But he also has more energy because hes smaller and more agile. He also hates getting in the car and getting groomed.
@@molly2534 I have a Pyrenees lab mix. She always takes a passive role when she's someplace with me and follows my lead, I've never seen her be an agreasor. If she's out on her own in the yard, she will absolutely take care of business if she doesn't think things are right.
Rescue!!! I am a Great Pyrenees rescuer. These are not designer dogs. They are beautiful, majestic and honorable. They are also stubborn, strong willed and independent. It literally breaks my heart when people get a Pyr and complain about the breed’s natural instinct to be who they are. Then they give up on them. You know what! They would never give up on you! These are Working Class Dogs! So don’t get them because they are pretty, or look like big teddy bears. They have a purpose and when you take it away or refuse to provide it it ruins the bond. I LOVE and advocate for them. So if you can handle what they are all about, respect and rescue. They have been one of the biggest joys of my life and my family’s lives.
How do you think they’d get along with Kangals? I have an opportunity to adopt an 11 month old GP, but I have two 8 yr old male kangals, and one black mouth kur.
The one I am training (for only 48 hours now) fake got wrapped around a shrub in the yard today in order to get me to come down to show him again how to follow the rope back. Once I was down the stairs he ran away smiling to show me he had not only learned "follow the rope back" but that he could fool me with it. I need to figure out what job to give this dog by tomorrow. He has already mastered respect around the humans and eye contact to wait for direction also in less than 2 days.
I showed hubby Azzy when he was a pup he said no. Started watching this video with him next to me and he said those dogs sound like a good breed. Long story short we are going to see some pups in a couple of hours 😍
I got one she was 9 weeks old we were on our way home and I thougjt she was deff.lol she's 3 months now.shes not deff she just doesn't care if u praise her she's got her own mind.lol.she is goofy and sweet.
There are so many great Pyrs in rescue. They wander off farms and people tend to allow them to wander and not spay or neuter. I highly suggest a rescue. I adopted a 6 year old GP and loved her 6 years. Super sweet, smart and was a great house dog. Mine had not a mean bone in her body. She was not protective either. She loved everyone.
The biggest deterrent to adoption through a rescue or a humane society is they require you have a fenced in yard. Totally defeats the purpose of a LGD if they cannot patrol the farm/ranch. Too many people get these dogs and don’t know how to train them or keep them occupied so they dig up the yard, climb over fences, etc because they’re bored.
My GP loves to put her head in my elbow or in between my legs. She is gentle and alert to every thing going on around us. She takes our phones out of our hands or knocks them to the floor. She wants our attention. She will not move out of the way and sleeps where she wants, even the pathway to the bathroom. She comes up to me for massages. She lies on her back, one foot straight out until I massage her all over. Her eyes roll back & her tongue goes out. So funny. She kisses me all over and hugs with her long legs around my neck. She tolerates her baths but not crazy about them. But loves to be brushed. She is unique and I love her dearly. Very protective and herds our 2 kittens from room to room Lol 😊
For anyone who needs a service dog- this breed is excellent for ptsd bc they are extremely aware of their surroundings as livestock guardian dogs. I’m a disabled veteran. Sugar basically trained herself. She alerts me to everything out of the ordinary. I am also hearing impaired and have a smaller dog specifically for that disability (my last ptsd dog passed away last September). When Sugar alerts me I take a look around to see what she has alerted me too. I reward the behavior. I thank her for the alert. I wait out the issue or I say “release” and we “walk on”. She has been an absolute life saver. My smaller service dog Sophie has recently become blind in one eye after being attacked at puppy daycare so Sugar’s job is now taking care of both of us and she definitely seems to know this. I cannot say enough good things about this breed even tho mine is a Maremma/great pyr cross.
I have a Great Pyrenees spayed female named Jessie. I got her from my father in law, who sadly got too ill to care for her anymore. I feel so honored to have her in my life & that he trusted my husband & I to care for her! I was an animal cruelty officer/investigator & a Veterinary surgical tech, so I'm an experienced dog mother. Of all the dogs I've had throughout my life since childhood, Jessie stands apart. Such a sweetheart & so goofy when she wants to be. She also has an almost regal bearing & dignity about her that is beautiful to see. She guards my remotely located, rural Longhorn cattle and chicken farm and does a fantastic job keeping coyotes, wolves & bobcats off the property. Thanks for sharing your Pyr furbaby with us!
We've had four of these guys. They're pretty much hard-wired, as described in the video. Very smart, very independent, very alert, and they require a lot of care. This is a lot of dog for someone used to labs and similar breeds. Don't be taken in by their beauty. These are serious dogs--proceed with caution.
My hubby and I have adopted five adult Great Pyrenees and would adopt another. Full stop. The Pyr, I wouldn’t call stubborn. However, they are independent “thinkers” and will “decide” when is a good time to listen to you. Protective they are, and yet, if confronted by an intruder (Which happened to our second Pyrenees) grabbed the intruder’s had with her mouth w/o leaving any bite marks. Hairy, barks, great with young children, independent, family mate, loving, friendly. We love this breed. They fit our lifestyle. Being married to an engineer, pragmatic is spot on. We love them…..
My aunt and uncle had a great pyrenees. She never barked (until she got dementia which who knew dogs could get that) and was the sweetest gentle giant on the planet. She lived to be 13 too! Loved our Flower girl!
My rescue is 51% Siberian Husky and 39% Great Pyrenees and wow.... she non stop loves to sit outside in the FREEZING weather like it is nothing. I was getting worried but everywhere I read, they say they are meant for the cold and love it
I've owned GPs for many years. I love that they are independent. They will take in all the details and make a decision on how they will deal with a situation. They NEED a herd to guard, it's what they were bred to do. If you don't have animals for them to guard, they will make YOU their herd. They possess a great instinct for people. When a stranger comes around they check him out. If the stranger is trustworthy the dogs will move back but if they see him as a threat, they will move between us and keep the stranger from getting close to me. I love that!
We have a female 10 month old Great Pyrenees. We live on an acre and have 4 kids from 8 to 1 years old. She actually does really well with the baby (we put a huge amount of our training energy into making sure of that). But boy she has everything your boy has. Stubborn and sleepy and sweet. Check on being a touch clumsy in running into people and things. Check on the giant paws. Check on the barking. Check on the head between the legs. Such a funny bread. Beautiful, huge, and so soft! She’s our resident polar bear.
My Great Pyrenees demands baths 😂😂😂. When she comes in from outside and she’s had a day of patrolling and digging she comes in and demands her paws be washed before I put her up for the night. I’ve never met a breed that’s so full of love but just ignores you when she’s busy with something.
We have a German Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix and that bit about the evening perimeter walk with random barking… EVERY. NIGHT. Without fail, she must go out just after sunset and sing the song of her people to warn off any potential interlopers.
that is a lot mismatched instincts... you never know which traits are going to be dominant, nor do you know if there may be conflicting traits in the future. i am sure she is great with kids and LOVES her family with her life, but one half is a herder while the other is roam-with-the-pack-all-the-time. the way they manage their "packs" (flocks) are polar opposites. i have heard that shepherds of all types often see their family as something to keep together as much as possible so they can see everyone at all times and they can become stressed in the mornings when everyone goes their separate ways out the door. i had a Chesapeake Bay Retriever/German Shepherd mix when i was a kid and the only time he would truly relax (sleep with both eyes closed & snore) was when my whole family was sitting at the table for dinner... when he could see all of us at once, the cat included. when my sister went away for college, it almost broke his spirit. thankfully, i got my driver's license a few months later and he & i started going on adventures. he actually learned the word "adventure" (my mom started calling our outings that and it stuck) and, if he weren't so barrel-chested, he would have done backflips when anyone said it, even on tv.
I've got a gsd pyranese. He's lazy most of the time very calm doesn't bark much but will. Bark when he perceives a threat and will attack if need be. Doesn't like to play won't do any tricks. But loves to go on long walks. Mainly just likes to be with me and likes car rides. But will. Not tolarate strangers inside the house. But loves people in general.
I've been blessed with a female Pyrenees and her name is Lady. I watched your video and want you to know I do not experience the problems you describe, except for the barking and that I encourage, because I have enough property to where neighbors don't complain about the consistent barking, which I personally enjoy. I also speak to Lady in plain English and always show her utmost respect. If I want her to move and she's blocking my way, I simply say "excuse me" and she'll immediately stand or move aside, permitting me to pass. I guess, when it comes to Lady, I've thrown my ego out the window and always show her total respect and she appreciates that. In all honesty, I can't say I've ever had a problem with Lady and know without question she loves me and I return that love with all my heart and I consider her a blessing and thank God for her daily.
I didn’t know much about raising dogs because my Pyrenees is my first dog. But I noticed mine being resistant to certain things like baths and being in the crate, so I just forced her to do both things frequently in the first few months of her life. My Pyrenees now loves bath time because she knows being dried off with a towel comes after which is her favorite, and she likes the crate too!
We currently have 2 Pyrenees (lost our oldest 2 yrs ago) They are an amazing breed. Our oldest was never a barker but our middle one is. They are very protective over us and our children and grandchildren. They use their size and huge bark to be intimidating but overall are gentle and very loving. The pyr paw is a common thing. It cute as pups but sure can hurt as they grow. LOL 😆 We do not live on a farm so our pyrs are simply house dogs. Oh...all of ours hate baths/water. LOL
Called a Pry Paw. I’ve gotten mine down to one scratch. But I get up to see what she wants. She has never had a bath in her five years. No odor, no skin issues. Rake daily. Smarter than most humans. She listens to sentences and obeys. Back up. …good for an 80 year old. She has always walked behind me so not a tripping hazard. Bring to mommy… she will go to another room and bring me the item she carried off. We trade for a treat. She also has a door bell, not jingle bells. From Amazon She rings it to come in at daylight after a night of warning the coyotes to stay away. Makes sure I never miss beautiful sunrise. Always speak softly and NEVER yell or hit! Keep their spirit happy and be rewarded one thousand times over. Rescues are full because people don’t do homework and fall for fluff ball that grows up to an opinionated 100 pound guard dog with brains. The good rescues will match the dog to your home.
Those are also DOUBLE dew claws, and they make awesome snow shoes. We have lived with 2 Pyrs. My only warning is, they're happiest with some space to guard, and in a home with at least one other dog. Goats or sheep or alpacas will do too. Our next dog will be a Pyr. Maybe 2. They are such cool dogs, you won't even mind having to clean the slobber off your guitars regularly. Our last Pyr's pack was a Swissy and a black toy poodle. That was hilarious.
My 1year old 110lb Pyrenees loves water he has his own kitty pool . He brings rocks and puts them in the pool.. even will put his nose under water and blows bubbles out his nose while under water. None of these dogs have the same personality and that’s my favorite part about them💕
We love our GP! He is all the things you guys have explained to the T! Our neighbor isn't so keen on the barking so we have been trying to deal with that but he is an awesome pooch. Thanks for sharing.
Yesterday I was in The catalan Pyrenees, mountains between Spain and France and I could see, a Great Pyrenees, we call them " mastín del Pirineus" looking after sheeps on the mountains 😊. They are great protectors.
As a dog groomer yeah these dogs tend to blow out there coat twice a year you will notice at spring and in autumn he will cast way more and yeah completely agree with with the no shaving it can be dangerous to shave such a dog because they can’t regulate there body temperature. ☺️ you guys have done a fantastic job learning about the breed
@Carol seems like he would be more comfortable with short hair. It's been so dang hot here in West Texas already this year. Not to mention the sticker's 🤔 I didn't live here when I adopted him.
@@535Medic yeah they shed there coats completely twice a year but yeah they shed non stop but a brushing routine and a good diet will Lessing it drastically
We rescued a great pyramese puppy from an abuser 7 years ago and she is a blessing to us. She is a loving and loyal friend. An amazing, beautiful fur baby. We love her so much
It's the greatest dog ownership experience ever, that's what it's like. Unbelievably loving, loyal, caring, affectionate and furry. The softest, best dog in the world.
My Pyr is very protective of me. Another dog, a Rottweiler, at the dog park,, began to get aggressive with me. She put her body between him and me and fought him off as he circled around me.. I was stunned. I had never seen this behavior before, even though I'd heard and read about it. She's so sweet and obedient, in spite of her stubbornness. I just LOVE her.
I have a female Pyrennes and she was a "pistol" as a pup! She actually saved my life while camping one year (at 9 months). A man trie to sneak up behind me in the dark while walking her for her last potty break of the night. 2 warning barks and then on 3rd bark , she whirled around behind me and lunged at the man. She kept in at bay and would not let him get any closer. She meant business. Love Pyrennes. Your remarks are spot on with this breed.
We currently have 3. Amazing dogs! Must have a large fenced-in yard for these dogs. They need to run and play. You become their flock when they are not being used as working dogs. They will defend their property and family with their lives. Our dogs will not allow anything in the yard. They are kind and loving. When they want attention, the Pyr paw is a weapon! Very stubborn and strong-willed. Can not be off leash at all. They will explore and roam given the chance. And yes, they bark a lot!!! We just love them and have had them for 25 years now. P.S. they love cold, snowy weather!
We have a GP/Anatolian Shepherd mix who is very similar (crotch face, dead squirrel and night patrols included) to your pup except he loves water. We have a creek on our property that he swims in daily, even in winter. We also have chickens, an NV, homeschool and have adopted through foster care (7 kids in all). Our kids love watching your family and seeing other families that look like ours. ❤
Wow your livin the dream. I have a gp/anatolian mix male and a pure breed male gp and live in the city with a normal yard. Gonna move to a property with land soon and cant wait to see my two boys enjoy the space. Amazing dogs and incredible with my children. And protective ppl always ask what breed they are bc u don’t see them in the city often.
My parents got a sweet girl, Luna, from a cruelty seizure years ago. While she's not able to guard a flock. she has always been a wonderful companion to them and has fended off several threats out on their walks. She is so patient with my nephews and protects them so well when they're staying with my folks. it's an amazing breed and I hope folks take that into consideration when they get their puppies.
I know this video is old but I have to say that EVERYTHING y’all said was absolutely spot on !!! I love the part about the mailman , FedEx , and UPS drivers , Aspen , who is our Great Pyrenees hates them but it’s halarious because we had to make a drop box because they were afraid to come up the driveway … 🤣 She is the best dog that we have ever owned !!! 5 stars for the LGD
I have 05 Great Perynees, this is a wonderful breed, I live in a farm and my girl walking together my dogs for protection, the dogs protection my girl, my animals farm and my property!! Thank you Lord for the wonderful breed! My oldest dog save my daughter life from the cougar.
You are so spot-on with the Pyrenees! I LOVE my gals which are actually Pyr-mixes, but have the basic look, size, temperament, and instincts of a Pyrenees. They are great guardians for my property and animals. Lying in front of the door and reluctant to move: SO true to form!!
Watching this just gave me all the giggles. I have a pyr and a pyr/aussie mix and he reminds me SO much of my girls. There are just some personality traits that are undeniably “pyr.” They truly are the greatest dogs 💕
Our GP is self cleaning. She can go out with our other dog and play in the mud. 2 hours later the GP is super soft white fluffy fur and the other dog (mixed) is still a little dirt ball. I call them the crack head and the pot smoker. The GP is mellow (pot smoker) the mix is high strung and nervous. Everything you have in this video is so much like our GP.
My sister has a GP for her farm and he is truly the best dog! Not super trainable (they also have Border Collies for herding cows and as just regular pets, so they know a lot about training, it’s not for a lack of trying 😅), but I’ve found Petey the Pyrenees doesn’t need a lot of training, he’s naturally such a calm and good natured dog.
They are very trainable, i thought at first when I got her about 3 months after I had her, that she was so stubborn , but reading and learning. They are not stubborn, they have to learn what you want then to do because they know what to do. I just got one and it is the best dog I have every had. I have read a lot and learned a lot and I'm still learning. I have a friend that has them, and she has helped me a lot. I was reading it can take up to two years to learn what you want then to do because they are very smart and they know what to do. I have learned from a friend if they are getting out they sense danger somewhere close. So they get out and walk the area until to make sure it is safe. She said her dog would get out everyday, all her neighbors that saw him would calm and say he's out again, she they learned has to get out walk the entire neighborhood then he comes back and he will not get out the rest of the day. Their neighbors don't call them anymore. Mine can chew a leash in 10 seconds and be gone. She goes directly to the fence line and watch's. This video was very accurate about how they are. I know all dogs are not the same. I have learned to do a-lot if research, ask other people that have them. It take a lot of work to learn then. I would say that they are not a good dog just to leave outside if you want it for a pet. Mine wants a lot of attention. Mine does but bark a lot at all. We live in the city so maybe there's nothing if danger in sour neighborhood. When got yo ranches, I have noticed she does bark if she sees something. She's only 8 months. She saw coyotes and ran fast to get us out of the area, but kept her eyes looking at me, looked back twice and ran faster. A smaller boy was behind me running and right before we got back to our camper she came from behind him to make sure he was there. She went straight to my husband because I think she senses that he protect us and being the head of the house. If he's around we go boat out friends camper she will not walk in between any campers she set in the outside of the campers and she will not leave unless he is with her. I am buying a GPS to put on her because we go to a lot of dirt bike races on ranches. She's the happiest dog when we do. She does not even want to come in the camper she wants to stay outside, probably to try to escape and go to the fence line. 😂 When she was only 12 weeks old, this is when we got her, they were working and she got spooked by a loud noise when they were working on the ranch. She ducked her head, pulled out of the collar, and her body was as low as she could get it and she was gone, very fast. I'm not trying to be rude or mean. I actually thought she was very stubborn and was not going to listen so when I stared reading, watching videos and help from a friends. I've realized how to work and understand her. My son does yet, I tell him you can't make her do things you have to teacher her. He wants her to stay in his room and night and she wants to stay outside and he get upset but she won't do it. She will come in in the mornings and sleep with him. I tell him that's what they do and they know what the need to do. It's been a learning experience for me. I can say it's the best dog I've ever had my entire life. It will probably be the only breed if dogs I'll every get again. She is so loves me and loves so much.
BEST DOG EVER. We have had ours for a little more than a year. Such a calm dog. We love her smile when she first sees us afer a short break. The other thing we found funny was when we took her for a car ride and first time through a drive thru. The girl at the window wanted to give our dog a treat, of course we said yes. Our Bella slowly sniffed the treat and refused to take it from her. We called it the "stranger danger" effect. Also at the dog park, likes to go to the small dog / quiet area. We get a few funny looks their first. She plays hard with our other dogs in our yard, but again "stranger danger". We are thinking of breeding her, just figuring out our logistics. Again, best dog ever.
one just wandered into my yard and hasn't left. shes been barking at the neighbors like she owns the place but cows down wit respect when we enter the house. we are going to adopt her now that we have identified she isn't a neighbors.
I have a Saint Bernard and they have very similar personalities! Delilah can’t stand not touching a human IF she’s awake 😂 specifically she does the burrowing in crevices also!!! Under your arm, between your legs, anywhere she can shave her way lol biggest baby I have ever experienced in all the dogs I’ve encountered!
Thanks for the informative video, just got a Great Pyrenees myself and looking to increase my knowledge as much as possible to ensure training goes well. He is already incredibly affectionate, and showing his intelligence with his stubbornness, which I try to see the funny side as not to get frustrated! First couple of days he was pretty quiet, but that has already changed! All in all he is a fantastic little guy and really look forward to him growing up and learning alongside him.
Really enjoyed your video - spot on with Great Pyrs' personality and characteristics. We have a rescued Golden Pyrs but his personality comes from the Great Pyrs side - stubborn, independent and protective. The Golden side keeps him small - he's about 80 lbs (if you can call that "small"). Great family dog, loves people especially kids. We adore our Golden Pyrs.
love the video and the point that even great dog breeds aren’t met for everyone ... I find that real shedding doesn’t happen until the first spring/summer after their first birthday
I have the Grandfather, Astaire. We live in Massachusetts. He’s a wonderful dog. There’s something different about him too… it’s like you can feel his soul when he looks at you. :)
I have my best friend lady,I got her when she was nine weeks old.Sbe was a out 18 pounds now she's five and about 125 pounds all love for my lady. Pyrs are great!!!!!
We have four, all spayed and neutered. They have two acres fenced to roam, a pond, they rotate with our sheep so they don’t get bored. They could jump the fence anytime, but in five years have never tried.❤
We have Pyrs 10 years old the sweetest dog loves to snuggle when I sit on the floor to read or watch TV. We have a running joke in our home that our dog (his name is Benny also) that he barks when a leaf falls of a tree. He has the sweetest personality loves to snuggle. Wouldn't trade him for another dog, dog bread. Our dog does like his baths. Also Benny is an inside dog. I do walk him 2 times a day, approx 1/2 mile each time.
I’ve never watched y’all before but I was here for the dog (I’m sure I’ll be back!) you described our GP Georgia perfectly. We also have a Leonberger male. They are both super smart & stubborn. They don’t like baths but love to play with hose or jump in the stock tank. Azzy is beautiful! Thanks for sharing such a good video. Giant breeds aren’t for everyone but they are wonderful dogs.
our great pyr/newfoundland mix will stop barking if we go to him and "look" at what he is barking at and tell him "good job protecting the house wally".
Adopting one, helped on a farm over summer. When I started hunting one puppy would follow me in the woods. After a few days of this I asked if I could buy him... extremely excited to bring him home. Been there on day one
Pyrs are leaners and pawers. Their paws absolutely can give you a black eye, take a man down with a awkwardly placed paw. 😂 If you aren’t ready, their leans can bowl you over if you aren’t prepared. But it is out of love. They are so smart and they are used to being in charge and primary guardian so they need to know you can be trusted to care for yourself and them as well, this helps them to listen to you… a little! They are truly one of the most unique and wonderful breeds I have ever encountered. Just the type of love and companionship they give you is different than others I have encountered. I know so many that are excellent therapy dogs visiting hospitals, their size and their calm nature makes them easy to pet from hospital beds and how can you not smile at that face?! Also, most of my Pyrs have had a “soulful” look. I joke it is because they feel bad for us that they are so much smarter than we are and we just have no idea. Poor humans. 😜
Thank you so much for this video. Aslan is beautiful and so sweet. You can tell he's soft. I love the way he uses his little hands to get your attention. I was shocked at how large he was and only 1. I would love to see him plowing through the house or making other animals go somewhere....that is too precious. I want one they are just beautiful.
We don't have a farm but rescued a 9 week old Pyr in TX. Our older Aussie mix trained her well and she sleeps all night and barks all day! We absolutely love Mabel! She makes us laugh daily! You're spot on about their breed!
I'd like to add, we rescued Mabel from TX Great Pyrenees Rescue. They are an amazing Rescue and have wonderful fosters! ❤️ It angers me to no end to see people with this precious breed let them run off and hit by vehicles. Just saw one on our busy road this week!
Great video.❤ my wife and i are going to get TWO PUPS, ONE MALE, AND ONE FEMALE, SO THEY WILL ALWAYS HAVE EACH OTHER TOO.!!!! WE HAD ST.BENARDS AND LOVED THEM SO MUCH. BUT THE GREAT PYRENEES IS WHAT WE ARE GOING TO GET TO SPEND OUR DAYS TRAINNING, FEEDING, AND LOVEING THEM. YOUR VIDEO SURE RAISED MY SPRITS, THANK YOU,VERY MUCH.!! JOHN AND MARY, BURNSVILLE,MINNESOTA,!!!!❤❤,
Baths have to talk and communicate at pretty much the same time together. Do them often if with the hose even when it's only to spray them off to cool them without soap. Got all 3 to accept hose baths. Then once done do the towel dry in a manner or way that they enjoy. It's a reward for them. Every dog loves a towel dry that's lots of rubbing and playful 😁
I Love my Pure Great Pyrenees! I can't let him go it because he does unforgettable memories when I took him for a walk, suddenly I got vertigo dizzy really bad I can't open my eyes everytime I openy eyes dizziness attacking me,I closedy eyes my Great Pyrenees lead me home safe he walk in the side of the road.that is why I Love him so so much♥️🙏♥️
We have a Great Pyrenees named Sully and WE ADORE him. He is the best dog we have ever had. He is the sweetest baby boy. A lot of what you guys said about Aslan, Sully does as well. It must be the breed! They are the best! Also when they give their paw it’s called the “Pyr Paw” if you haven’t been informed about that yet. Sully also loves to lay by the AC vents on the floor and put his head between peoples’ legs and give his pyr paw. Loved watching your video!
Our Great Pyrenees mix is 4 months old and he loves the water, swimming, and jumping into the tub/shower with us. He ate part of our coffee table, and will slap you with his paw to get your attention, and he definitely has to patrol the yard in the evening, night, and early morning.
Azzy is such a sweet boy!! He is the reason I told my husband our next pup would be a Pyr! My husband surprised me and we now have an 11 month Pyr, Milo!! They are some incredible dogs! My husband isn't fond of his stubbornness and enormous appetite but there is no denying how sweet and gentle he is. Which is a must since we have little ones. He is the first to wake me up as well, everyday at 6:30 I get the nose bop and if that doesn't do it, paw is coming next!
I have 7 dogs, all Great Pyrenees & mixes. I have two Nygerian Dwarf goats and chickens that are well protected. One of the Pyrs is my Service Dog, she pulls me off the floor when needed and helps me walk when my back is hurting...
You just perfectly described our GP! He does exactly the same thing as your GP. Ours doesn’t mind baths but it’s not his favorite but he tolerates it. Our GP is Louie and always say he’s on “Louie time” when we try to get him to do something or follow a command. He’ll do it but it’s on his time. 😂
Lol I use a blower to blow the excess hair out and use a vacuum with a brush attachment with extra brush to put space between the skin and the brush or suction. I use 2 different ones when I groom mine as well as the different brushes as well at different times.
My Pyr loves water! A few things I made sure to get my puppy used to very early on: brushing, bath and blow dryer. I got my Pyr as a baby, right on his 1st day I gave him a bath (he came from a hobby farm, and was dirty as a good ol' farm boy). Being a former Lab mom, taking the dog to swim while camping was part of our fun times. It was important to me to get him to like water, As soon as he had all his shots we took him camping and when it was all quiet on his 1st early morning I took him to the pond and played with him on the sand. Soon enough, after a little bit of investigation, he was splashing his paws in the shallow water. Didn't take long and he was swimming a little bit. By far not gracious as a Labrador, he is not built for that afterall, but enough to cool off on warmer days, and swim to safety if needed. Although I don't bath him often, he has no issues or tries to run away. Now when we go camping, as soon as I get him off the leash, he takes off to soak in the pond.
Okay! So I was showing my daughter a house I liked with property and she said she wanted this breed of dog I watch all your videos every week and unrelated I came to TH-cam to search about the breed and you just happened to make this video one hour ago! I’m literally so shook right now 😂😂😂😂 the odds are so crazy
Great information. We just added a Great Pyrenees to our family. She was "dumped" at a 500 acre ranch in Etx and she's the sweetest most calm baby I have ever met. We love her so much already. I have no idea what we're in store for! Also, I love your top...where can I buy one? 😊🤗
We have a 15 months male great pyrenees. We have him more inside than outside. We live in Ottawa, Canada and he loves the snow and ourselves to death. Water is not his best friend but we willl try to hose him off in the spring and summer. He is our big furry baby. He is definitely the best protector. And yes, our doors are all scratched.
Y'all nailed it. Thank you for this! We've known, owned, and fostered a number of Pyrs and Pyr mixes. I may point people thinking about a GP to this video, because you covered most of the important points. Including getting smacked around by the Pyr paw =)
We have a GP male and a female GP/Anatolian mix and they are AMAZING dogs. I’ve always wanted one, and we adopted these two and I will never be without one! They keep my vacuum busy, but I love them more than life.
We. Love our Pyrenees! We have two Pyrenees (1 is a mix) and everything you have said is so spot on! The pyr paw has gotten us all more than a few times !
Well, I was watching your video my Great Pyrenees barked every time she heard yours. 😂she actually barks at any dog she hears from the TV and she’s several rooms over usually. Very informative videos. Looking to get my next one.
I am convinced that my dog is a Pyr/Anatolian shepherd mix, I adopted him from a rescue at 8 weeks old. I was originally told he was a Newf/Husky/GSD mix, but it doesnt make sense; he has no personality or physical similarities. His personality is so much like your description! He looks like all of the Pyr/Anatolian mixes I see online. He's also very "pawsy". I am definitely going to do a DNA test.
Thank you so much for informing everyone of the breed! A lot of times people get puppies or dogs because they are cute. They don't research the breed and have no idea what comes along with the breed! Which is why the puppies out grow the puppy stage then the dog ends up at the shelter or being neglected on a chain. Thank you again! Great information! Please do your research on any animal you plan on adding to the family! I do volunteer at a rescue so I know these awful things happen unfortunately
Just got ours recently. He's 10 months old. It's been a few weeks now and he follows simple commands and alerts when he wants to go out, although not always for bathroom runs. LOVES finding a new stick to chew. Maybe the biggest lap dog I've ever seen! Loves snuggles and feeling loved. If you want high energy, get a lab.... these dogs are like the Snorlax of the dog world. Nice to have a calm dog really.
I have a part GP and Part blue healer, she is very protective she has all the white with spots of the BH in her, she does all the barking. Her mate is a black Pointer they have had puppies, 10 of them. She is a lot of fun. I am glad to hear she has most of the GP traits. Both dogs were my daughters and she passed away in 2014, she was a very small puppy when Shelly passed. I love them and cannot imagine life without them.
I trained mine to sleep at night n he'd bark during the day. I love these dogs. Best family dog
I’m so late. But how did you train your Pyr to sleep at night. Patrol during the day?
Can you take this breed on a walk? And how are they when on a walk and you come upon someone else with a big dog? Dog aggression? Thanks!
Awww that’s awesome!
Did you guys get one of the puppies?
This is such a lie comment 😂😂😂
Yikes, a dog in general, but especially a guardian breed is definitely not a decision to be made on a whim after watching a video 😞
That’s how we got ours, a farm wanderer without chip or tag. Starving and exhausted and now a darling.
Ours are rescues too! Found on a reservation as puppies. They are half golden, so even more laid back. Best breed combo ever!!
Just adopted 2 baby girls :)
Mine love a big kids plastic pool in the yard
Love that CR said Aslan is the first “person” to wake him up in the mornings. Such an animal person thing to say. 😊
Yes bark randomly all night long, but I love 💘 them.
We do also: Sheba is 90 lbs. But it is like she Just Has to bark. We are in Michigan
@Bridget Curren. I like the quote "she must go out and sing the song of her people."
We have a Great Pyrenees named Blizzard and this is 100% accurate 😂 We love our polar bear!!!!
Blizzard. 🧡 I love the name.
we almost named our new pup Blizzard! nice one!
Is that true for Australian Shepherd?
My boyfriend keeps telling me to shave my dog in the Summer 🤔 I thought the hair helped them stay cool.
@Carol seems like he would be more comfortable with short hair. It's been so dang hot here in West Texas already this year. Not to mention the sticker's 🤔 I didn't live here when I adopted him.
Ha, they only shed 2x a year
for 6 months at a time
@@535Medic yeah they shed there coats completely twice a year but yeah they shed non stop but a brushing routine and a good diet will Lessing it drastically
@@nicoledaisy2716 reach up, reach up higher, catch it. The humor went right over your head.
Thank you for your video. We just adopted a 3yo Pyr. He is a sweet boy and learning our family as we learn his personality.
How was he with the chickens?
My parents got a sweet girl, Luna, from a cruelty seizure years ago. While she's not able to guard a flock. she has always been a wonderful companion to them and has fended off several threats out on their walks. She is so patient with my nephews and protects them so well when they're staying with my folks. it's an amazing breed and I hope folks take that into consideration when they get their puppies.
I know this video is old but I have to say that EVERYTHING y’all said was absolutely spot on !!! I love the part about the mailman , FedEx , and UPS drivers , Aspen , who is our Great Pyrenees hates them but it’s halarious because we had to make a drop box because they were afraid to come up the driveway … 🤣
She is the best dog that we have ever owned !!!
Thank you for sharing this info about your Great Pyrenees for this is a breed of dog that is much needed for our family! ❤️
The most incredible dogs ever. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
It’s an adventure for sure. Love our Great Pyr, Olias, who will be two next month. ❤❤❤🎉
I have an anatolian great Pyrenees cross and he absolutely loves his baths he literally drags me in to his groomers cause he knows he's getting a bath
We have a Chow/Golden/Great Pyrenees. Has all the Pyrenees traits and the rest... A GREAT DOG... but oh so stubborn!!! Sweet as can be!!
my Great Pyrenees "Mello" loves water! the only thing i heard different.. .. I love this bread... my best friend!!
Trying to give a Great Pyrenees will give you a new definition of exciting.
Oops, a bath
He’s a beautiful dog. Our Grear Pyr sleeps at night with us.
love the video and the point that even great dog breeds aren’t met for everyone ... I find that real shedding doesn’t happen until the first spring/summer after their first birthday
My pyrs loved wading in the pond. Puppies loved playing in wading pool splashing their bellies. Agree with everything you said!
Haha! My Great Pyrenees Duke, is the exact same in every way! 😂
My great Pyr loves water!!! Loves loves loves to go in the kiddy pool and after a muddy dig lives to get sprayed with the hose
Our 14 year old pyr passed about a year ago and I miss him so much. Love watching your videos!
Oh Shelby, I'm so sorry for your loss. They are FAMILY and it HURTS like h... to lose a member
Aww I am so sorry
Good work getting him to live to 14! You must be a fantastic, loving caretaker! ❤❤❤
I'm so sorry Shelby. It's the worst.
It angers me to no end to see people with this precious breed let them run off and hit by vehicles.
JOHN AND MARY, BURNSVILLE,MINNESOTA,!!!!❤❤,
This sounds a lot like my Kuvasz mix lol Gentle and protective w/ the family, aloof w/ strangers, and barky. They’re vocal 😅
Love love my Pyreness❣️❣️❣️
You nailed this breed’s personality. We had a mixed GP and German Shepard. She was GORGEOUS and we lived in her world!! 😂❤
We have two pyrs. Both rescues from Atlanta Great Pyrenees.
I use a high velocity dog blow dryer.
Our Great Pyr girl turns 16 months next week. Her dad weighs about 154 lbs. she weighs about 90. She is extremely sweet and happy dog.
My son turned 13 today.. We just got Thor from the local shelter. Thanks for the info!!
Our GP/ Kangal Shepherd mix is the the same way as you describe yours. We love Max, he's family.
My 1 year old Great Pyrenees hates bathing too.
The head and paws is the Great Pyrenees thing.
Sarge will nock you down with his paws.
We have a GP male and a female GP/Anatolian mix and they are AMAZING dogs. I’ve always wanted one, and we adopted these two and I will never be without one! They keep my vacuum busy, but I love them more than life.
Love the 🐾 paw. My Great Pyrenees;"Fancy Francie", loves to run un rain, but Scared of the vacuume and baths.
We. Love our Pyrenees! We have two Pyrenees (1 is a mix) and everything you have said is so spot on! The pyr paw has gotten us all more than a few times !
That paw…
Well, I was watching your video my Great Pyrenees barked every time she heard yours. 😂she actually barks at any dog she hears from the TV and she’s several rooms over usually. Very informative videos. Looking to get my next one.
Love when he had his paw on CR's shoulder! Punching in the kidney doesn't fun but he's cute! Wow he is huge baby! That pic is crazy!!!
