The Samsung refrigerator has an ongoing issue with freezing up and icing over the fan and evaporator coil. In this series, I will show you how to remove the evaporator cover, coil, and fan and clear the drain of ice.
This is a do it yourself DIY step by step instructional video which will show how to remove shelves, remove the panel, remove the ice, defrost, and clear the fan from the ice that builds up inside.
There are reasons why this Samsung Refrigerator seems to freeze up like this. It may be due to a faulty thermostat, or a defrost coil, or a defrost timer.

Hi Jake, My Samsung RF268 needs to be defrosted. I hear a random a three beeps descending the three ascending and a blue image of what looks like a plug on the top left side of the screen. Do you have any clue what that means?
I talked to a refrigerator repairman about this problem on my Samsung. He uses a steam gun to thaw the ice in order to remove the styrofoam. Since I don't own a steam gun, I used a spray bottle filled with hot water and sprayed it around the edges of the styrofoam. That worked great - thawed within 20 minutes (but I only had ice near the bottom). Also, he uses the Romex copper wire to prevent future icing up on the drain tube. He doesn't bother with the Samsung retrofit clip because the wire works and is handy. He said to wrap it tightly around the heat coil so that it makes good contact. BTW, he says all brands have this issue, not just Samsung. Thanks for posting this helpful video!
Just had Electronics Hospital here to fix my 4 year old Samsung French door fridge that I bought at Lowe’s. It started making loud noises behind the cover and fridge portion wouldn’t get cold. Same deal, evaporator had frozen over. They took cover off and used a steam gun to quickly defrost. You could see on the old cover where the gasket had deformed and allowed air to flow in and freeze on the coils. Swapped in new cover. No charge, I thankfully paid $200 for the 5 year service contract. It has paid for itself. They also replaced my ice maker which is why I had originally called about. The repairman joked that all of the major Samsung problems were happening at the same time.
This video saved me hundreds of dollars. I followed your instructions exactly and it resolved the ice buildup and eventually drained right through! Thanks!
Hi Jake - Followed your videos today for our iced over back panel on our Samsung. It took a while to get the panel off (lots of ice build up), but we used the hairdryer on low and tried to be patient. Finally it came off and we had a very large mound of ice at the top. We would never have been able to fix this ourselves without your videos. Thank you very very much - fridge is cooling down now!!
I appreciated your series, it helped me diagnose my problem. I did not do the defrost but contacted Sears and they diagnosed the problem as a faulty circuit board. Their explanation was the board was not turning on the defrost function. They say the board has an internal timer that defrosts after a specified compressor run time. I also contacted Samsung who finally said that if any part of the Refrigeration System was at fault (5 year warranty) they would repair the unit. I hope the circuit board is the problem.
Our fridge temps kept rising over the last month or so and were stuck in the lower 40s due to ice build-up. Then lower 50s. Your videos helped us get back to normal. Great job Jake and thank you!

I used a heat gun and hot water for years. Once I started using a steamer I kicked myself for not having done so sooner. It's a LOT faster and safer for plastic, it's neater without water and soggy towels all over the place, plus it comes out under pressure so you can blast drains 100% clean. Looks a lot more professional too $35 at Wal-mart. You're welcome

Hi Bro, it doesn’t take a refrigerator tech to unblock the drain pipe. Thank you so much for your video! My refrigerator was having this ice buildup problem for just over a year, so last night I decided to spend some time to unfreeze/unblock the pipe, The freezer was off and open for the hole night with the thought that it will melt during the night… FAILLED. So I went on TH-cam and saw you video by just add some hot water in the tray. Man it was less than 5 min, PROBLEME solved. High 5, many thanks
No. Unblocking the drain tube is not difficult. I agree. Preventing it from happening again and again is the hard part.
I’ve been going through these steps, thank you very much by the way. It has been extremely helpful. One question I have, when testing the fan motor and the panel connection that the fan motor connects to, does anyone know what setting and reading I should see on my multimeter? I’m no electrician and have searched everywhere to determine these readings. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is a permanent solution, so seat tight and enjoy my analysis.
The root cause of the problem is ice built up and then clogged up the cold air vent holes and jammed the fan. There are multiple reasons for ice build up:
1. Where did the ice come from? To minimize the ice we need to keep moisture inside to the minimum, which means covering up glasses of water, milk, opened sod cans, soup, cut open water melon, mango, fruits, wet vegetable, raw meat, etc. . The humidity inside the refrigerator is quite low, and so anythings that can be dried up will release moiture and this will form ice, and too much ice will out win the defrost heater short heating cycle (short cycle to achieve the Energy Star) and the net result is a slowly ice build up.
2. The other moisture source is the bottom Pantry tray that collected water. You need to pull out the pantry and clean this bottom tray every month or so, or after a spill from trays above. Any liquid spill not cleaned up will ended up as ice inside the fan box -- no magic about this.
3. The bottom drainage hole is clogged up with ice. Once this happened, every degrost cycle will release the water down into the bottom Pantry and pool there. This water then evaporate and form ice inside the fan box eventually. (Hint: to melt the drain hole ice fast, fill up the "pond" above the hole with water then place a 15 watts soldering iron hot tip into the water and make sure to keep the hot tip from directly touching the plastic part. Add more water if the "pond is dried up. The hot water will melt the ice and clear up the drain hole. You need to keep an eye on this and remove the iron as soon as the hole is cleared.
So how do we solve these problems? It is unrealistic to have zero moisture inside the refrigerator, but if we can keep it to the minimum as I pointed out in (1) above, and with a modification to the design that prevents the drain hole clogged up then the problem will be eliminated permanently.
To solve the problem (3), I used a 6 inches long, 3mm diameter copper (or aluminum) wire, wrapped around the black heater pipe (just above the drain hole and running across left to right) 3 turns, and extended the wire down into the drain hole. If you don't have large gauge wire then just use two smaller gauge wires, wrap them on the left and right side of the heater pipe and extend the wires down into the drain hole about 1.5 to 2 inches.
I used to fix the iced up fan every year, but after implementing the 3 steps above, it has been running over 2 years and still no problem. My unit is RF266AB.

Cut hole in back of unit where drain is to let it stay room temp. Then install heating element from Amazon that warms top of evap coil instead of just bottom. Install it to TH-cam video and end your problem. I run mine through defrost cycle twice a week and NO problem. Heater is$69.00 thru Amazon and hooks into existing heater wires. Love it! No more tear apart every two to three weeks!

Did that take care of the problem for good?? My parents is freezing up also . I don't want to replace and still have that problem.
On the of those Shark Steamers you can get from Walmart are excellent for thawing out ice. They are much faster than a heat gun and will not damage foam or solder joints. If you get the right one the wand will go right down into the drain hole and thaw out the ice in seconds. They cost about 75 dollars. The only downfall is some of the steamers make so much steam that it might blind you.
There is a magnet in the right door which activates a switch on the unit when it closes. This magnet is on the top right. Some times you can see a bit of discoloration. If you have a decent strength magnet you can hold it over this spot with the left door closed, right door open and it will "think" the door is closed. When you get it right the interior light will go off and you should hear/see the fan spin if everything is working. Beats trying to open the door real fast. The other good thing about this is you do not have to take the back off. If the ran is spinning it will be obvious and you will be able to hear it using this magnet method with everything fully assembled. Hold the magnet against the spot. When in the right place the interior light will go off, wait a few moments and you should hear the interior fan start. If you don't here it after a few seconds it is not spinning.
In order to check if the fan is working you can put a magnet in the top of the refrigerator where the door meets it. there is an interlock in the top of the door (check for a bump in the top of the door) and if you will place a magnet over there it will consider the door as closed.

Could you share the info as to whether the styrofoam is glued to the evaporator panel and whether it would easily break? Also, how long did it take to defrost before the panel can come off?

a turkey baster works well for melting the ice in the drain, also the yellow wires go to a sensor located on the cover near the fan
I had the same problem and manually de-iced the coils 3 times. Once the entire compartment was froze over and it was a mess. The biggest challenge was getting the drain clear, hot water and a turkey baster worked the best. After that I watched and it took about 4 months and I noticed water again under the crisper and immediately emptied the fridge and took the compartment cover off. I was lucky, only the drain pan was froze over and it appeared a large chuck of ice had fallen down over the drain hole during the last defrost cycle and plugged before it was melted. Ice got thicker and a natural defrost cycle simply wouldn't melt the accumulation over the drain.
I saw another DIY and the guy explained that Samsung had placed an aluminum tab on the defroster coil that was supposed to defrost an iced up drain but it was designed too short. To fix the problem he got a 6 inch piece of soft copper wire; wrapped it around the heating coil and extended it down into the drain. He said he thought this would work but it would take several weeks if not months to find out. If he's like me and it worked, he probably forgot and moved on to other problems. I don't know if this works but having water leak out and only finding an iced over defrosting drain has me convinced this is probably a fixed. Hope it works and yes, I would probably forget to comment if I didn't have to go through this again.
Thank you very much for the video series. You saved me $400 so far, but I have grown weary of going through all of this every 6 months. Today, I purchased an air pump used for fish tanks. I have inserted two hoses into the top vent holes and am currently pumping air into the chamber behind the back plate. I'm planning on doing this every time I hear that fan start to hit the ice buildup. It seems to melt the ice away without dismantling the fridge. Samsung should stick to televisions, their appliances suck.

Check the drainage pipe at the back panel if it's clogged up, very common problem too.

babycruisequeen It goes to a pan underneath the fridge by the compressor which gets fairly warm and the water evaporates due to the heat...

would a faulty thermol fuse in the freezer compartment affect the function of refrigerator side is there any link between the two. on the samsung RS21 JGRS model. i have had a brand new kit put on. still having defrost problem on fridge side. rechecked all the components for faults, they all good. Have been told it could be the pcb board not letting the heaters stay on long enough. is there anyway of checking my pcb board myself.
That's my best guess too. There is probably a programming error in the computer. All the parts check out fine. So, I am pretty sure its a computer issue.
Samsung is on the top of my DO NOT BUY LIST for the foreseeable future as the result of their garbage refrigerator.
Yeah, I cannot recommend a Samsung fridge at this point. It wouldn't be so bad if the company stood behind the product. That I could handle. But, the company has ignored this problem and has even been sued over it.

I'm not sure if there is a diagnostic for it. Probably Samsung knows how to do it. But most technicians would probably just swap out the computer...

Use a magnet along the door seal area where the magnet on the door would make contact in the same area. When you find that sweet spot the interior lights will go off and it will think the door is closed and you can feel for air flow out of the cooling vents. 😊
Check the fan works, just hold the power switch in the inside sidepart of the fridge for 10 seconds.

Dealing with this now. Cannot remove panel due to a lot of ice holding it to the styrofoam. How long did it take yours to thaw?
+Tom Wright ---> it could take several hours to let it melt on its own. Or you can use the hair dryer on warm and try to gradually get the air to blow behind the panel. Do it slow. Don't rush it. You can break the coil or damage the Styrofoam if you try pulling it away while it's still frozen.
OK - I will be patient. It's been about 15 hours and it is still stuck towards the top. Not a ton of melting overnight either. I have the same model refrigerator as in the video - are we sure there are only 4 screws? Thanks for the video by the way - very helpful.
I am so sick of having to defrost my fridge every 6 months. I can't believe there hasn't been a recall on these units. One comment said Samsung would replace circuit board within 5 years. Maybe I'll try that. Even my grandmother didn't have to defrost her fridge after 1960! This is unbelievable.

That isnt a light of some sort its the connection for the evaporator heater, which is probaly the root cause of the freezing
2/15/17, Yep......I have the French door, bottom freezer w/this problem. After taking everything out & taking advantage of the outside cold w/food, I left it to thaw overnight, then I took the plastic panel off. The whole coil & fan were caked up w/ice. After painstakingly removing ice (if you can pull it out from surface then squeeze w/a pliers) don't try to chop as you'll surely damage coils/tubes. You might want to check that middle flap on the left door to make sure it closes lest you have an open gap b/w the doors that you won't notice when the light goes out. so far it's working well, let's see what happens in a week or so. The freezer was ok.

I actually found an easier solution, I was having the same issue with my 2016 Dutch door model...after the warranty expired of course. I tried the manual defrost on my but my computer in the frig must be different and it didn't work, so I just left the top part of the frig doors open for 6 hours; about 5 days after I did that the fan hitting the ice noise came back.
Ok, so I defrosted it again for 6 hours, then I decided to play around a bit with the temp settings, first I raised the top part of the frig temp to 40 degrees instead of 38 where I had it, then I raised the middle drawer from the meat setting of 29 degrees to the drink temperture of 33 degrees...so far so good, no ice build up that I can tell for 3 months.
I think either Samsung put a poorly designed defrosting capability in their units, or the internal thermometer that is suppose to keep the temp at whatever temp you select is off by a few degrees, so when I had the top part of the frig set for 38 it probably was around 32 to 35, and the drawer likewise was probably running at 25 or so instead of 29.
UNCLOGGING THE DRAIN: Use a pot of hot water and a baster. Squeeze in the hot water and draw it out several times. Dispose of the now cold water and refill the baster with more hot. Repeat as needed.

Don't forget you can put it in forced defrost mode , where "fd" appears on the front panel. A quicker way to melt the ice, assuming using your defroster is working. 'Hold Top left button and middle right button. The display will clear Press any button, and keep pressing that button until 'fd ' displays. You may start to hear ice crack. You will also hear and annoying beep for a full half hour. You can power off the fridge at the breaker if you want to cancel this mode, or just wait the 30 min for it to complete. You will need a towel in your crisper tray during this part if your drain is clogged. Man , is this fridge a piece of garbage.

Scott Philbrook oh believe me , it won't be in the manual lol. I doubt customer service would have any idea about this either. Btw, the amount of time the "beeps" last seems to vary. Typical samsung, nothing is consistent. Also make sure that your fridge is reading the right temperature (and the temp is dropping) after this process. If it's not, power it off/on. If you have defrost on for a while, you can end up in "emergency mode" where it stops trying to cool until you reset it.
Mine was blocked drain line. Took air compressor hooked to drain from back blow it free!
Scott Philbrook yes, I had to run a copper wire down from the hearing element to the drain to actually defrost the drain going forward.
So, if I were to do this repair............what's to say in 2 to 4 years I wouldn't
have to do it again?

For those who have reached this video, thank you jakeguitar01! Excellent information. I've discovered another video that goes through the drain line in the back, apparently what happens is it gets not only frozen, but clogged because of a faulty design.
If you are able to access the back of the unit, what you do is disconnect the drain line and de-gum the drain valve, which is … interestingly designed. Please refer to video in link below. Really hope someone can find utility in this comment.

Tip
# use a heater to defrost, faster and you do not need to waste time. With a hair dryer.
# to check the fan, simply press the door switch a good 20 seconds.
# it's not fixed i am sure of it, samsung evaporators are unreliable. Replacement coils are about 85 bucks.

+Michel Linschoten Well I wouldn't mind using mine for target practice but at 2k for this lemon it's not in my immediate future. I had techs over numerous times placing more aluminum tape, squirting water down the drain and then replacing the evap cover which I didn't see how it would fix things and I don't think they did either and of course the "repairs" did nothing and now am out of warranty. I tried holding down the door switch as you commented above which I thought would turn the interior light off but surprisingly it doesn't so there must be some other switch that is less obvious somewhere. To this day Samsung remains tone deaf and amazingly ignorant in their service and parts outlets regarding this widespread defect.
The BEST way to repair a Samsung fridge is to THROW IT AWAY. Pure JUNK.

The best thing you can do is join the class action law suit against Samsung for this defective design flaw. You might get your money back years down the road.
The subsequent poor customer service to protect themselves from great financial loss is really disappointing. Samsung is not looking out for their costumers at all. You buy their product and they give a quick "good bye" regardless of how awful the product is. As long as it can be fixed, Samsung doesn't consider it to be a defective product... Samsung thinks paying $400 every 4 months for a 2-year old frig in order to fix the same issue repeatedly is acceptable. I do not, and I don't think many of you do either. It is not acceptable. It is fraudulent.
Keep all receipts, records of phone calls, photos/ videos, etc. and call the number on this website below to join the class action lawsuit. It only costs you a few minutes to tell your story. There's nothing else you can do to fix this lemon. Get it out of your house whenever you can afford to.
