Same model, same problem. This video helped a lot. One comment for anyone else: If you're pulling that evaporator cover off for the first time, it will take more force than was needed in the video. You will break some seals. Make sure that things are melted enough that you're not breaking anything important.

Thank you so much!! The first time I tried to defrost I unplugged it and let it sit for 24 hrs., that didn't work and that's when I found your video, it was a lifesaver (from my wife). A few months later (yesterday) it stopped working. I got a call at work yesterday from you-know-who, that it wasn't working. I came home early and emptied the fridge into a cooler, didn't touch the freezer, and began taking apart the back wall, I got the hair dryer melted everything, popped it together, and was done. All in, it took about 3 hours, had all the food back into the fridge by 9 at night.

This is our model and thank you for producing this video. This started to occur while still covered under our warranty, and the technician that came out wanted to be sure I knew about the process because it is a known defect and issue with this terrible appliance. I approached Samsung a number of times and they continued treat this like a warranty service without taking responsibility for the flaw or customer experience and satisfaction to say the least. As food prices sky rocket the liability for having this throw away appliance increases day by day , (in addition to wasting valuable personal time) I will be purchasing a new appliance. It will absolutely not be a Samsung and based on these experiences and lack of accountability from the manufacturer - we are always certain to help everyone we know to steer clear of this terrible brand.

Thank you for doing this video. I noticed the fan noise a couple of weeks ago and learned it was most likely this problem. A few days later the noise went away!! Wishful thinking that it would just fixed itself. Found your video and today we tackled the issue. It took 4 hours mostly because there was so much ice behind the panel so it took a long time of running a hair dryer inside with door nearly closed to loosen it enough to pull away without breaking the panel. You are right…..DONT put the left middle screw in at all …. Neither middle screw is necessary. There was so much ice that hole took a long time to thaw to be able to reach the screw and lots of effort to get the screw out. Lots more time with the hair dryer on the fan panel, fan, and the frozen coil. Then at least 2 more hours of power freeze and cool to get both sides back to reasonable temps. I know doing this more than once, as you apparently have, will make it go much faster but I think we’ll just buy a new fridg. This one is 11 years old. Several years ago after paying 5 different service techs to come fix freezing water on the bottom of the freezing side due to plugged drain hole I found a TH-cam video recommending to just wrap a copper wire around the heat coil and let it hang down thru the drain hole and that problem has never recurred. I wanted to wrap copper wire around the refer coils today too but need a thinner gauge wire to be able to wrap it. We bought all Samsung appliances when we remodeled 11 years ago and every one has been a problem. Have replaced microwave….after fixing ourselves twice, dishwasher, and don’t feel too good about the stove either. Thank god I did not buy Samsung washer and dryer.
Thank you again for doing this video! I know it saved us hundreds of dollars…..maybe more.

@@efdwe’ve been fixing our fridge this way thx to you for a few years now & like you at least every 5-6 months or sooner. We also recently found out that you can’t use a generator with Samsung fridges any of them!!! Unless you get an inverter for generator. We bought it specifically to save the fridge! There’s a couple hacks a mechanical engineer told a chemical engineering use a 2 prong plug end and remove the grounding & it works it’s hit or miss but we did eventually get it to work that way with no inverter. There’s another guy that has a video on a newer model that shows installing an actual defrost wire kit you add on in addition to yours & it plugs right in. Then wraps around the coils & runs when the other defrost kicks on. It’s definitely the defrost wire can’t handle the load. We’re taking ours apart now again! Did the copper wire work for you? Have you tried it? We just found out about the defrost wire & don’t have it & now our freezer fan also froze up too! Trying to find out if it’s the same issue but no videos yet 😓
I also like the people who commented renovated & replaced my appliances with Samsung but thankfully kept my old stove & got a Maytag microwave but I will never buy them again & have a lot of electronics of theirs with tons of issues too! 😢
Please respond if you tried the wire & it’s results or even the original commenter & thx!

New, more accurate title" How to very temporarily get your fridge to be cool again." There are usually at least two sensors that often need replacing. Also, check the drain line(s) is clear. Thoroughly clean all the dust off all the the condenser coils and air intake areas usually in the back of the machine (everywhere.)
Replacing that entire panel is a great idea. That should also come with a new sensor and fan and better seal. I just changed mine and it was 2 lbs heavier than the new part because it trapped moisture. This moisture (from hair dryer melted ice- year I tried your way too) allows the evaporator coil to ice up again very quickly- even when everything appears dry and ice free.
I also changed my circuit board just to be safe and adjusted the defrost time (longer.)
There are also simple checks you can do to make sure you have enough Freon and that the fans are working correctly. It's a fairly simple design- very similar your homes central AC. With a little effort (and more parts) you should easily be able to permanently REPAIR (not just temp. patch) your issue. Also, carefully check the seal all the way around the door. If it is compromised anywhere, that can also cause the issue you are having. There are several ways to do this check- just look online.
Fridges don't so much COOL as much as they dehumidify and remove HEAT. That is why you never want to leave the door open more than ~5 seconds. Also, never leave any high moisture items inside like a half cut watermelon. It, by design will suck the moisture out of that item which can then lead to icing of the evap. coil.

    • @efd

Thanks for all the info! I've replaced the sensors but hadn't thought about replacing the entire panel. Will have to give that a shot.

@@efd I would do that. Also, make sure the fan is working. On my Samsung I used magnets to activate the fan (simulates the door closed.- the light goes off and fan turns on.) If you are at all handy with a volt meter, you can do further diagnostics of the sensors and the fan- very easy and step by step videos are online.
You could also put a video /phone camera inside- take paper to the vents to see if the fan moves when you close the door- or soon after. Definitely check your drain to make sure it is 100% clear. You can test the defroster using the forced defrost mode. It's incredible how hot it gets- close to 400F. This is not good for the food but usually defrosts much of the ice. All of the seals have to be perfect or the warm, moist air coming in can lead to ice build up.
      Good luck!

Very helpful, thanks for posting. A possible reason you are having to do this so often may be due to the drain that is underneath the coils. Mine was completely blocked w/ ice. I took the time to let it thaw as well, and then to make sure it was clear I blew compressed air through it from the other side (remove lower panel at back of unit) where it drains into a pan that sits under the compressor coils. I am hoping this helps moisture escape as intended and reduces frequency of this procedure.

Hold down the energy saver and Fridge button for at least 8sec at the same time to go into diagnostics mode. Use the fridge button to scroll through the options and stop on rd (aka refrigerator defrost) let it sit for 10 to 15mins and it will continue to beep. Once you feel it was enough time to defrost hold those buttons down again to enter diagnostic mode. Scroll using fridge button until the screen is blank and let it time out. It will be back in normal operation. Kick on power cool and you’re good to go. Do it often enough that it doesn’t ever freeze as high up as the fan. Lots of videos on that for reference. Good Luck #samsungsux

Just bought similar model (RS263TDRS) for $200. After 24hrs temperature monitoring, temps are 35F & -10F for Fridge(2bars) and Freezer(1bar). I can see from these extreme temps, the sensors are not properly turning off when set temps are reached. Previous owner had the same issues and moved on from crappy Samsung non-support. I expect to solve permanently using heat tape routed through the areas that normally frost up, and set up a weekly cycle that defrosts without having to tear it apart each time. Designing it to melt ice, not hot enough to melt plastic. Just speculation at this point. I will update if and when my project becomes reality.

Yes. Trash it and get another brand. I have had this problem for 4 years now. I used a repairman once. Cost $400, he changed several parts and melted the ice. Problem came back within a year. I just do it myself now. Easy to do. Pain in the *ss is all. Samsung refrigerators really suck. I did this so many times it destroyed the tape and styrofoam seal so finally I replaced the whole fan and assembly. Still comes back. In fact I'm going to manually defrost tomorrow morning.

After doing this, the fan is not starting up. Actually I do not know if if it was before.
Is there a way to test if the fan is in good condition and make it start pushing buttons on the front panel?

Do you have a multimeter? You could check it for continuity. Put the probe in the 2 ports and see if the fan has continuity. If it does, the issue is that it’s not getting power. If it doesn’t, the fan could be bad.

After 9 years, my fridge started doing this. Do you have any idea what causes this?

    • @efd
      @efd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I haven’t figured it out, I’ve switched out lots of different parts and none of them have fixed the issue

I believe The cause is moisture and difference in temp between the fridge and the cold line coming into the fridge (where the ice block site is). It appears the permanent solution is installing a heating element near it (Supco SH502). You might also try insulating the entry portion of the cold pipe with thermal tape or spray foam.

I don’t. I’m not sure what the root issue is. I’ve changed sensors and thermo stats and it still happens

Yeah, mine usually happens after a big grocery trip so I have to load it all in coolers, defrost, then load it all back in.

Your video title says HOW TO FIX.... not HOW TO DEFROST. We need to fix the reason it is freezing over, repeatedly!!

Dude, the guy saved you $400 for a service call. Cut him some slack.

Im thinking of trying this method: th-cam.com/video/WjUbNx-Z-dE/w-d-xo.html
My 9 years fridge started acting like this, so hopefully I can pop the cover off and used a steamer to melt the ice. Have you try replacing Evaporator Fan motor?
