      What type of EV are you looking for? They have them ranging from 20k to 100k+? You can't hardly get a 2 year old used a Escalade for less then 110k right now. Lol

      The Ford F-150 lightning is practical and reasonable for it’s price!
      Plus the Ford F-150 is the most popular vehicle in the USA, period. So the Lightning EV version sells simular. Don’t need a Tesla

    Excellent points. I shared this video with my EV-procrastinator friends ("need 500 mile range," "must be AWD," etc.) We bought a Kia Niro EV three years ago and just love it (despite only a 275 mile range and FWD). An added bonus - here in Oregon public facilities such as libraries, fair grounds, and public utility districts offer free charging. Why wait!

      Indeed! Right now fast public charging stations are often empty, in a few years there's gonna be a line of vehicles waiting to charge, great time to own an EV.

    You can not pull a trailer with BEV. A 200 mile range will drop to only 70 miles.

    I like electric driving. Did a road trip to France via the channel tunnel during half term. There were plenty of good charge stops along the way, usually with toilets and coffee available, and I paid a lot less for charging than I would have with an equivalently powered petrol car, especially at almost €2 per litre! Overtaking on the motorway was also effortless. I doubt I'll get another diesel or petrol again.

    Glad you made that point at the end. People keep pitching an EV by itself as the only scenario, but many households have two or more cars. If you have a cheap second hand petrol car on standby -- perhaps something of a very different form factor to the EV -- then you can use that other car for the scenarios your electric car doesn't handle well. Something like a cheap Japanese station wagon could work really well.

    As a single person who only keeps one car, I wish there were more range extended electrics. A car that can run on electricity for short journeys and use a generator to keep going on epic road trips would be ... well ... epic. Too bad the only two such cars ever made, the BMW i3 REX and some GM model, are out of production.

      Hybrid can be considered an unspecific, trendy marketing BS catch-all term as there are 3/4 different types of "hybrid".

      The Honda Clarity goes 49 miles on electricity only then switches over to gas. What you are looking for is a plug-in hybrid. Search for those, there are lots of models.

      Kia makes several PHEVs, the Niro, Sorento, and Sportage. All with around 30mi EV range, then hybrid mode.

    Kudos on info here. Glad to here mention of waiting to let new tech "gel", especially since auto companies are proving very bad at repairing/supporting the many intermittent glitches the products are showing (both my brothers' Lexus and my Subaru are glitchy, with dealer techs saying they can only fix problems if the systems flat out fail).

    I guess for now, I’ll just buy a used car that’s efficient. ICE, hybrid, FCEV, or EV. My regular car still runs well, just expensive on gas. However that is cheaper than buying a replacement at this time for me 😅

    Adding a ceramic layer to solid state battery packs reminds me of how fancy hair straighteners often incorporate ceramics to distribute heat evenly and prevent hair damage, as well as create ions that help hair stay dry, but not fried, but also not frizz up if there's ambient moisture around.

    CATL sodium ion battery has already solve those problem and now are being mass produce to consumer level.

      Catl sodium batteries are not appropriate for cars as they have very poor volumetric density which means that they have to be much bigger then even LFP batteries for the same range. They are only appropriate for storage lie for the grid due to the volume needed.

      Also they are not currently being mass produced. They will hopefully be in 2023 but it's pilot lines currently. CATL said it won't be until 2025 until any significant production volumes.

    These packs should come with the EV as an external add on. That way you can fill up the battery while you go to work, and then when you come home it's already full. Then you can just switch it out when you return, and don't have to worry about having your car hooked up to your house's electrical grid all night.

    I hope we new solid state batteries start being massed produced soon but it's unlikely as it is harder to go from lab to production then people think and the cost is likely to be much higher then conventional batteries. Sodium ion could be useful in large storage but not vehicles as sodium batteries have very high volumetric densities that keep it from being a good option. They can be a good option for grid storage though. It will be years before we see significant production however.

    Battery tech moves quickly. In the i3 they kept the same battery size and every couple of years it got a huge range boost while keeping the same size and shape.

    In 2015 I bought a Mitsubishi MEIV. I didn’t worry too much about the miserable range it had. It was a 2012 model forced on the Mitsubishi dealer close to me. It had 5712 miles on it when I bought it. It now has 22,000 miles on it and the only reason that I got it was I drove less than 10 miles per day. Obviously I had a regular fuel vehicle at my disposal should I need to go long range.
    It has been a great little car. It fulfilled everyone of my needs.
    The sticker I had made for the back window says the following. This electric vehicle is fueled by natural gas and coal. I’ve had people ask me where are you put the coal in.
    The manufacturer said that the mileage per charge was 66 miles and that is being generous. The AC unit and the heater work perfectly. The car was $32,000 new sticker and I paid $9000 for it. In my estimation currently a hybrid is the way to go and we have one of those as well actually it’s the second one we’ve had. Both of them have been Toyota.

    These will keep improving every few years. Some of these big ideas may not pan out but each generation of batteries will last longer, cost less and give more range at the same size/weight as the previous batteries. My old boss had one of the original big brick cell phones, the battery lasted 45-60 minutes of use and not even a full day on standby. He had to keep 2-3 batteries at the office, 1 in the phone, and 2 charging and the battery it self must have weighed 1 lb and they could only be recharged a few hundred times.

      @@drewfeld836 We ended up buying a PHEV waiting for EV's costs to drop and batteries to improve. Paying an extra $15k+ for a full EV isn't worth it since we already cut our fuel usage by 75%.

    Actually that is what I was going to do is wait 10 years lol. I paid off my SUV and for what I want, I knew I would have to wait a good 7-10 years to buy an electric car. Need one that can go more miles with faster charging and more charging stations out in the US. Figured to build all that up would take a good 7-10 years.

    Realize that when the 'affordable' battery comes along, BEV cars will become commodities. They will be dirt cheap and much more reliable. That's going to be quite a change. There are already lots of people for whom electric cars are more than adequate.

    How are we gonna generate the electricity to power all these EVs? Blackouts in CA and TX are happening right now. Not sure renewable can even come close to generating that kind of capacity

      Well we're doing ok with it in the UK. We're at something like 37% renewables now, heading for 100% by 2030. Not sure if we'll do it, but if not, it won't be far off. A good model would be the Orkney Isles, off the North Coast of Scotland. Around 23'000 people live there, and they actually generate more energy than they need, with the excess going to the mainland Scottish grid. They use wind and wave turbines, plus solar. There are now around 300 EV's on Orkney......

    There are lots of these ‘game changing battery’ videos around but I do wonder if solid state, when it finally arrives will only find niche applications. CATL, the world’s biggest battery maker have announced the Qilin battery will go into volume production in Q1 next year. The incremental improvements of existing chemistries make it harder for competing technologies to become the ‘game changers’ they claim. The Qilin is a cell to pack technology that will be made in two chemistries, in LFP form it has 160 Wh/kg at the pack level, the NMC version 255 Wh/kg. LFP as we know is safer, 30% cheaper to make having no manganese or cobalt in it and can reach 3,000 full charge cycles before much loss of range...it is a true million km battery. The Qilin can also be charged from 20% to 80% in 10 minutes on a >100 kW charger...at least as fast as the more sophisticated 800v systems in top-spec cars. The consensus seems to be that most cars will use LFP to keep the costs down, while NMC will be used for high-end cars. In any event I would be happier with an LFP battery which would to all intents and purposes outlive the car. My Kia is of course NMC with a pack level energy density of 147 Wh/Kg....so you can see how things have changed in 4 years..LFP today is where NMC was 4 years ago. An e-Niro equivalent now with the Qilin LFP pack of the same weight would have a capacity of 73 Kwh, 9 KWh up on mine, be able to charge much faster, last longer and be safer. Unless solid state offerings can come in cheaper than LFP and save a lot of weight I find it difficult to see how they will be the game changers some people think.

      Yes there are a lot of "game changing" videos, in EVERY field of technology. It takes almost a decade to prove the battery technology works and get it to the point of manufacturing where it isn't too costly. After all any new battery technology not only has to work over many years but also under a wide range of environmental conditions and it takes a long time to prove this.
      It's why he said don't wait.
      LFP doesn't have the energy density as Li-Ion, and Tesla has contracted with Panasonic I believe to develop a higher capacity 4680 battery which should allow them to have a near 1000 miles range vehicle.
      As far as solid state, for all you know the benefits of it could be so great that it makes OTHER battery technology niche, other than Li-Ion which is ideal for electronics and small form factors for AAA, AA and slightly larger batteries and for all the devices those batteries run. So if any of the battery technology you named can't replace Li-Ion for all those small form factors then they are the technologies that could become niche just like Solid state could be. But from what I've read solid state are the most promising for high range, so as the video points out the likely vehicles to get it first are the heavier vehicles. That's not about a "niche" case. That's about getting to economics of scale. Once solid state is at economics of scale it could be hard for anything else to compete against it for BEV, other than maybe a higher range Li-Ion in the Tesla 4680 form factor, which is also involved in making part of the structure for the vehicle which reduces vehicle weight, and is why Tesla calls it a structural battery pack. And there isn't much data for these since vehicles with the structural battery pack JUST started releasing this year.

      The big problem here is that hundreds of thousands of EV fans know way more about this topic than Brian at CNET, and you are one clearly. In five years when any of these new cells might be available to buyers the cost of battery cells from CATL or Tesla or other companies will be significantly lower per kWh at the pack level than it is now, and then we have to consider scale of production of the actual vehicle. Even if these new battery cells Brian talks about cost less at the cell level, do they cost less at the pack level? Will the low quantities of these new cell available result in higher costs at the vehicle level, because of the lack of scale of production? Scale of production has a huge impact on costs, but "journalists" like Brian seem to have never heard of that. Further, say optimistically that one or two of these new battery cells are available in EVs five years from now...likely in an EV produced in volumes of 25-50 thousand a year...how much "impact" will that have with Tesla alone making maybe five or six million EVs and many millions more being made by Chinese and European companies? Basically, in five years, maybe maybe, less than one percent of new EVs could have these new battery cells in them. Wow, what a huge difference that will not make.

      Hey Kia, what is the range you think they can get with those batteries compared to the ones out now? I am waiting at least 7-10 years before I look at buying an EV (no car payment for that long is always a win win lol) and really want one that can go a good amount of range before charging. I like to travel a lot, road trips, and some of these 200 range EV's just not something I want. Also waiting on the charging stations to be build up more around the US. Saw one video a guy waiting almost 2 hours to even get a chance to charge because he was in line. Not something I care to do on a road trip lol.

      @@LegendaryOldwarrior yeah. My nephew and his buddies rented a Tesla during his recent trip from the SF Bay Area to LA, a 500 trip 1 way. He said he won’t do it again with an EV. Took them 2 charges 1 way and each time is 1 hour minimum. Unless one is retire or have plenty of time, EV is simply not effect on long trips. And this is Tesla with a vast amount of charging stations.

    To early to buy one..in alaska i use the heater in the car a lot. That will drain that battery. What about in lower states that get real hot in summer, running that air will hit the battery. What about if theres a heavy drain on battery will they blow like a ied!! All batteries get hot from a heavy drain from working them.
    1000s of years ago romans and Egyptians used oil and tar for there boats, dirt roads and rock roads to keep dust down. Oil has been used for 1000s of years..when millions are driving Ecars less demand for gas so be cheaper. Look up price for replacement batteries and electric motors for Ecars..

    The only reason I am not all-in on electric cars is that they are still too heavy and aren't as fun to drive. With sold state batteries I'm hoping they can make something like an electric MX5. Then I will be very interested in EVs.

      I own a tesla model 3 and it surprised me , coming from several BMW’s including an M3. Plenty of torke and fun to drive. I was expecting less. Missing the engine sound though

      @@jonb8633 My experience is with the gen2 rx7, rx8 and the gen4 mx5, and the rx8 already felt a bit heavy. So I'm looking for something that is close to or below 1300kg if possible. I don't mind fast cars, but I love exceptionally nimble cars. As good as model 3s are, I just wish they are lighter. If the model 3 can lose 250kg from going with a solid state battery while keeping the same range, then it would ideal.

      @@jonb8633 But it is all relative isn't it? From the reference point of a BMW M3 (1750kg) the Model 3 (1700kg) would not seem heavy. However comparing to the MX5 (1100kg) and the FC RX7 (1200kg), the Model 3 felt much heavier.

      Been around cars (as a driver) almost 55 years. The last time I knew single car families, they were 'Single' (and those had RV-toys) or lived downtown in really big-dense cities (like NYC. SF). This may be a USA thing. Every single Family (with 2 or more residents) house on my block has 2 or more motor-vehicles .

      BC seems to be more pragmatic. Most of the people I know who go EV can afford to go fully EV with both their cars. I can’t think of anyone who owns a Tesla and a Subaru Outback.

      Almost every couple/family I know has 2 vehicles. Not NEW, mind you, but most families need 2 vehicles. Having one of those vehicles as a main commuter EV is pretty ideal if you're going to have 2 vehicles, anyway. And if they want to wait a few years for used Ioniq level EV's to show up, that's smart. But one ICE vehicle and one EV gives you all the options while 2 EV's/2 ICE's don't.

      @@robsolf I think 2 EVs is still superior - lower overall vehicle cost. There is the occasional roadtrip but let's be real most Americans don't take massive road trips very often. I've driven back and forth across the US 4x in the past 2 years in my Tesla and it was never a problem charging it up along the way. But when you're in a normal city and charging up in a suburban home in your garage with a level 2, you basically can charge from home 98% of the time.

    Don't wait for new battery technology, but if you don't need a different car now, wait until prices come down or at least stop going up so sharply. It seems like we are in a car bubble right now. Don't pay too much unless you can afford it or really need a car now.

    200 miles is good for me I only work 10 miles away if I want to make a long trip which I have not made in 20 years I will take my gas car or rent one. It's not the not the capacity of the battery holding people back it's the high price of EVs
