  • RELEASED EARLY TO BENEFIT THOSE SUFFERING FROM THE WINTER STORM DUE BETWEEN 1/31/21 AND 2/2/21. Hope this helps you get through the shoveling!
Charlie Fennell is back to take your questions about a Maine regiment that fought at Gettysburg that popular history seems to have forgotten, but they make Chamberlain's fight on Little Round Top look like a slap fighting match, with all due respect to the 20th of Maine. We're talking about the 16th Maine Regiment who, after their action on the First Day of the Battle of Gettysburg, had 38 men and 4 officers report for duty on Cemetery Hill.

Charlie is amazing. There are so many people who know Civil War but they are hard to listen to. Charlie is awesome. So is Ralph Siegel.

There is an oil painting of Colonel Charles Tilden on the fourth floor of the Maine State House where I spent a fair amount of time working for a number of years. Often when I was having a bad day at work, I'd go stand before Colonel Tilden' and, thinking of his July 1 at Gettysburg, and realize my day was not going so bad after all. As for the torn up colors, the 16th Maine members took them with them to rebel prisons such as Andersonville and Libby Prison. Those who survived returned to Maine often still having their pieces of flags. There is an example of these on public display in the Hall of Flags in the Maine State House. I've a distant relative who was a 16th Maine survivor of Gettysburg. He was on what was called "detached duty" as a wagoneer on July 1. Very lucky..

It's been many years since I've read up on this and my memory is hazy, but my distinct recollection is that post-war veterans of many Maine regiments prominent at Gettysburg (3rd, 4th, 16th and 17th) were less than thrilled with Chamberlain's promotion of the 20th's achievements vis a vis theirs.
