Peter, I bought a cheap unit on eBay. It was one of these units. 4 Digital LED Tachometer RPM Speed Meter + Hall Proximity Switch Sensor NPN I simply stuck the magnet on the end of the spindle where it sticks out of the headstock on the gear side. And put the probe up to it using double sided tape. It was real simple.

It is not so beautiful like yours but I thnik it will be so after a full rebuild. The lathe has some plays in the cars.
