    You're a gentleman Tubalcain. Nice video!

    Thanks for this video, I've owned a few Southbend 9A's and am going to pick up a Logan 210 this weekend and it's in a basement. This was just what I needed to see. My plan was to pull it all apart, and it's always nice to see how to do it. The headstock part was especially helpful. Thanks again!

    I picked up a Logan 820 in great shape today for $300. It was in a place that was hard to get to and I didn't have any help. I watched this video last night a couple of times and it was invaluable in helping to disassemble the lathe today. Took me just about an hour and a half to get it all taken a part. Mr. Pete. Your videos are a hoot! I love them. I'm 65 and a retired mechanical engineer. I spent the first years of my career as an apprentice tool & die maker, then worked for 10 more years as a machinist / tool maker while going to night school to get an engineering degree. My dad is just like you. He loves old machinery. He was also a machinist, and then an engineer, for American Can. We have a bunch of machinery like a Tree Tool Room Mill and Cincinnati HydroShift Lathe among a bunch of other "stuff". I absolutely love your video's. Thanks so much!

Anyway, thanks a lot, I am retired and trying to start a small part machining business for hotrods. Tom

    Someplace in the video you say that the HEADSTOCK will allign when mounted again. It seems that only FLAT faces are involved in the mounting. Sorry for my incorrect words, but I'm danish and that's smhing you eat - you know, so it's hard to express while you'r eating ha, ha,....
    I had very big problems with headstock alignment on my old STANKO - kelds.weebly.com/mine-maskiner.html ... 4. picture down the site - till I found the allignment screws - buried behind shields and and a lot of dirt !

    I watched this a months ago because it's interesting and based on your many other videos. Now I find myself watching this again because my aunt's father has one of these beauties in his basement and no one else wants or can take it. There is also an old small mill and a few hundred pounds of tooling. It's both my greatest joy and greatest challenge to fit these in my already packed garage shop.

    Mr. Pete sir. I’ve done about 5 South Bend refurbs now, and thinking of doing a Logan next. I’ve typically sold the others off, but think I’m gonna keep the next one I do. Do you have a video that details the main differences and benefits between the South Bend and the Longan? They seem to be pretty comparable. But, like I said, I have no first hand experience with Logans.

    • @mrpete222

      No, there is no video as such. But if you watch a few of the Logan videos, you may get the idea. I sold both of my Logans Last year. I am thinning out the herd

    Hi there Tubalcain.. I have had a Logan 955 for 3 years, in decently great shape.. I'm cleaning and rebuilding the apron but I seem to have a custom pull n hold lever for the clutch instead of a swing lever. Want to put it back to proper although somehow to me it looks like it was meant to be this way. I would love to exchange photos and maybe ask for help from your knowledge! Then the only thing other than a cleaning and lube, need to repair the back gear.. watched numerous of your videos and multiple times, anxious to get my machine going. :)

    Never knew compressed air would do that. I'll have to strip mine as per your video and give it a good cleaning. Would you recommend a light coat of oil over everything? It seems if I don't, some days I'll come out to a light frosting of rust.

    I just bought this exact lathe. I know nothing about metal lathes and I think the best way for me to learn how it all works is to take it apart and put it back together. • @junglejammer1

    A nice, safe move. As a very young man, I bought a lathe from a factory, where I used to work. The manager was a bulldog, kind of guy and rushed me to get the lathe moved, to make room for the new lathe's arrival. As a result, I didn't disassemble it enough to lighten the load to a safe weight to handle. I got hurt, moving that thing. I never let anyone rush me, moving machinery, after that. I would say, "either let me do it my (safe), way or I'll sit here and watch you do it yourself.

  • @WojciechP915

    Why not just use some turn-buckle straps to hold the handle on?

  • @gohuskies583
    @gohuskies583 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your statement about how disassembling other lathes is similar is correct. I had to move a 9-inch SB lathe into my basement and it came apart almost in the same manner. Really liked the pipe idea, I strapped the bed to a hand cart but it was pretty awkward since its not bottom heavy when its standing up. Nice Video! Oh, yeah, love the classic Sanka Can.

  • @rolinrubin921
    @rolinrubin921 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    See that pin at the left end of the lead screw, if you knocked that out, note it's tapered then removed the lead screw before disassembling the carriage. You could have made life a lot easier. Obviously you've never disassembled a lathe before, live and learn. :)

    I'd probably use a pack or 2 of small ratchet straps counter opposed on each way to pull against each other, but yours looks real solid there..
    Sanka, that has to be at least 80s vintage, I can barely remember it..
