South Bend VS Logan Which One Should I Keep
มุมมอง 3.1Kปีที่แล้ว
I've got two lathes. I've had the Logan for a few years and just got a good deal on the South Bend. I'm using both to see which one I like better. I don't really have the room to keep both so one is going. Let me know which one you like better.
My New South Bend 10K
มุมมอง 5Kปีที่แล้ว
Another lathe followed me home. This South Bend is in mint condition. I have never seen a used lathe in this good of a condition. I'm setting it up and seeing if I like it. I'm going to use it for a while and see if I want to keep the South Bend or my Logan.

Your audio is at a very low level and almost impossible to understand. You need to get a better microphone and a program like Audacity (free). And learn how to use them.

Over the last 50 years I've owned many Logans and a few South Bends - including a low hours recent Heavy 10. Currently I have a Logan 14, which I'd much rather have over a 13 or 14 South Bend. Picking between these two? I assume you already have, but unless I'm using a lathe for just occasional use, I'd keep the Logan. For the odd job, I'd not worry about it and keep whichever talks to you. I have to do very precise work on occasion, and the plain bearing spindle of the SB complicates that. You can do it but it's a process. If the Logan spindle bearings are in good nick (I bet these are), then precise work is straightforward. I have used Light 10's - those were standard in US Navy optical shops (I was an Opticalman 1975-1980). Delightful little lathes for instrument repair when not worn out. Logans simply are better developed machines in a practical sense, heck, the spindle is 20th century technology! One potential problem with Logan lathes are the spindle bearings. Every Logan is pretty old now, and the "Lubricated for Life" bearings are in some state of drying up. Life meant "life of the bearing", not our lives! When Logan was a going manufacturer of the lathes replacement bearings and spindles were no big deal. Scott Logan is still doing all he can to support these old machines, but lathe spindle quality bearings are getting rare and expensive - for certain Logan models there are simply none of the odd-ball New Departure flanged bearings available. Ideally, these original bearings should be re-greased, and before the dry condition makes itself obvious. There are ways to regrease the bearings, remember, any grease is better than no grease. I'm kind of facing this with my 14.

The only machine I've seen in that perfect shape is a 49 Harley that was purchased from a dealer that was closing. Same color as your lathe, in a show room it's entire life and never started.

Very very nice lathe. I also have a South Ben but not as new as that one. The table is going to be a problem for you. It needs to be much more ridged than it is in the video. Getting precision cuts with the way it is in the video is going to be almost impossible.

I got a South Bend lathe and mill a while back and finally got power to them in the basement. I've read on forums about modifying 30 taper tools for the mill but it's always nice to see it instead of just reading it. I'm a (mostly) CNC guy at work but want to get good at the manual stuff to better understand the whole process. Love the video and a big thanks!

Thanks for the video! Could you please provide measurements for the alignment of the pockets? I don't have an existing SB tool holder to copy from. I assume the top of the shoulder mates to the face of the spindle? That top edge would be a good reference? I'm a newbie, so if there is a better means to measure this, please correct me. Here is a quick (not to scale) color-coded drawing. drive.google.com/file/d/1yUgoY4f0j8Kg7IDnVinvHy5ZgT-Gqdjl/view?usp=share_link. Can you provide: 1) The distance from the top of the shoulder to the flat of the pocket at the tangent of the taper. (orange lines) 2) The depth of the pocket on the flat at the target of the taper (purple lines) 3) The diameter of the pocket or the diameter of the endmill you used. (green lines) Thanks!!!

Rosignal lighter fluid is the best to clean indicaters. It cleans and dissipates leaving a lubricating film. Other brands dont leave any lube.

Probably some "surplus" tools from Grumman.😁 I've got a bunch from Convair/ General Dynamics that came from a 50 year employee. It's amazing all of the control numbers that were hand etched on some of the milling cutters and drill bits, some 15- 20 characters long. Nice score.

My dude, HOW did you find a 10K in that good of condition? That thing is BRAND NEW. That flaking doesn’t last very long once someone starts using the lathe. I’ll tell you what, keep the Logan, sell the SB to me. Hit me up!

  • @MrTIGERH1752
    @MrTIGERH1752 ปีที่แล้ว

I favor the Logan, because to me it is just better built than the SB (South Bend), and Scott Logan, (Grandson of the original Logan lathe builder) is a super nice guy, and always very helpful. His parts do not come cheap, however. Logan parts and accessories are harder to find than SB stuff. I grew up with a SB in my father's shop, and I always loved these lathes. Parts are cheaper, and easier to source than for a Logan lathe. For home shop use it's really a tossup. I think you should keep both, as I have 5 lathes in my 1,600 sq ft shop, and I use all of them, all of the time, because I do a massive verity of work, and being able to leave a set up, and run another job on another machine really helps a lot. Probably not an issue in the normal home shop. You will find a perfect place in your shop for both of them, if you don't need the money from the sale to purchase something else. I really love the precision of machine tools, and using them to make parts, and repair things. Tim

Nice score on the tool boxes. A couple of years ago I decided I wanted another Kennedy box, found a couple on Craig's list. Met a guy in the mall parking lot to look at the first one. It was like brand new and was full of tools just like yours. He wanted $75. so I took it. Thought about not even going looking at the other because it was listed for $100. Glad I did because it had lots of Starrett and more tools than the first box did. Crazy how sometimes people will let things go for cheap and other times they think their junk is solid gold.

Both machines look like they are in beautiful condition. I am partial to South Bend, but have experience with Logan. Your particular Logan looks user friendly. Parts and accessories are not as easy to find for the Logan, seems much easier to find for South Bend. The South Bend is not going to be very rigid on that bench. Like you pointed out, it's a later version with some nice features. Both lathes would sell easily for good money. If I had to have a lathe in this size class, I would look for a late South Bend 10L (heavy 10). Over the years they improved, and got things like heavier hardened beds, bigger dials, cam lock spindles as standard equipment. You could also get one equipped as a tool room model, with a taper attachment, collet closer and rack, high precision lead screw, and other accessories as standard. You could probably sell both of your lathes and get one really excellent 10L. Or maybe even get a South Bend 13 in the same footprint.

You’re nuts… unless you need the money that badly I wouldn’t part with either one… I’d put them both to work and find some nice little lathe jobs..since I served my apprenticeship on a 9” southbend that’s the one I’d keep.. my two cents
