13 years ago, one of the most brilliant fan vids ever produced came into existence. I still come back to worship it from time to time. Welcome fellow worshipers. 👍
It's definitely Shatner's best cover, and he has some good ones. However, Devo's cover of "Hey Hey, My My" with Neil Young on supplemental guitar is the greatest moment in early eighties music. It's up on YT now. If it isn't 9 minutes, it's not the right video.
Nearly ten years old, and I've only seen this for the first time today. Oh well, better late than never. LordRicco666, whoever you are and whether or not you still exist, please know: this is damn beautiful. Funny, slick, gorgeously assembled, and sometimes just wicked smart (Uhura in front of the monitor, relearning everything after Nomad wiped her brain in "The Changeling," in time with "pretend you never went to school"? Oh man!). Bravo, sir, bravo!
I'm also late to the party and found this after doing some recent Shatner viewing. The editing on the video is fantastic and although I've known this great Cocker Shatner performance for a long time it's been a real treat to see these pictures too.
@@johnmccaffrey280 If you are, indeed, LordRicco666, then may I add my thanks, as well! This is "internet-best of" type of stuff (that's certainly true for all of the many fans of the original Star Trek!)
I watch this pretty regularly, and I always wonder how intentional it was on op's part that this song kind of feels like a perfect encapsulation of star trek's (especially tos) themes of, like, economic tourism? Like the crew of the enterprise, coming from their utopian society on a mission of curiosity and discovery really are kind of like a rich kid playing at being working class to enrich themselves with authenticity or whatever but then getting way more than they bargained for, and at the same time, encountering all these godly aliens who are even more privileged and bored than they are who use them as playthings for their own entertainment. like that line "and everybody hates a tourist, especially one who thinks it's all such a laugh", one way or the other, isn't that the plot of so many of those old episodes? anyway great vid 👍
Happy 91st birthday the honorable william Shatner.this version of this song is alot better than the original.live long and prosper or give me some of that prosper.lol!
This is FANTASTIC! I made a William Shatner sing-acting video and someone linked me to this one. I doubt I would have discovered this otherwise. Now all the time I invested is worth it.
Old friend Alex Proyas (Director, The Crow, Dark City) has just been mesmerized by this today♥♥♥ Thanks for brightening Alex's day all these years later.
Great video... gotta mention that Joe Jackson duets on this with Shatner for the actual singing. They both do amazing, with Ben Folds providing the music. So many stars...
This has to be a STRONG ass candidate for BEST THING ON TH-cam EVER! Truly inspired genius! How ever did you turn a Shatner cover of a 90's Brit rock class war anthem into a touchingly hilarious tribute to OG Trek? You FOUND a way! 🖖LLAP
Awww. Thanks :) The clip was spoken word/video so the clip had to match the lyrics of the song so in some ways all it took was meticulous editing and a trekker knowledge of Star Trek but yes wanted to inject humour too :) But in some ways it's like Michelangelo said "The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, I just have to chisel away the superfluous material."
I'd like to think that Bill Shatner has seen this! As viewers would have noticed, I went with the whole spoken word to video clip approach and I think he'd approve
This video has extremely high re-watchability for me. Thank you (to the creator). I love this version of "Common People" by Shatner and Joe Jackson (and Ben Folds).
What a staggering exercise in Editing. From the choice of clips, to the overall rhythm, variety of characters and especially the dead-on lip sync moments. I can't even imagine how long this must have taken. Brilliant - absolutely first rate!
It took me 3 days to complete over a long weekend but I had been listening to the song and thinking about clips for it for a couple of months earlier, then one weekend of ripping DVD's and editing :)
Absolutely brilliant,i first heard this version at our local cinema during the intermission, could not believe it I had to ask what version it was,and now with the scenes as well awesome.
It took me 3 years to come across this vid, but I'm so glad I did. Kirk taking Edith Keeler to a supermarket, Operation: Annihilate roaches, Kirok and Trelane as tourists….too damn perfect. Thanks for putting this together!
@@LordRicco666What I meant..... Your video is of IMMENSE quality, compared to computers that were available back then. Must have taken WEEKS if not a couple months of computing time to do.
Really well done. It must have been a lot of fun to make but also hard work. Kudos for finding so many scenes to match the song lyrics, often in comic fashion. Bravo!
1st time seeing this and absolutely thrilled to find it. I haven't watched these types of clips for years and was hesitant to click onto it, only to find that your inspired concept and playful editing was an absolute fun ride. Thanks for doing this.
2024 and I've just seen this, pure genius and so well made!
Thanks mate!
So glad you're still reading comments. Frankly, this is the peak of western civilization. Everything since is just aftermath.
Thanks everyone for their appreciation of my clip :) It was fun to make and still fun to watch!
this video is AWESOME ! must've taken a long time b/c the clips & music & lyrics are perfectly blended .... fantastic job !!!!
i JUST FOUND IT ,WATCHED 3 TIME IN A ROW ..........THE BEST ..THANK'S !
Amazing cover by The Shat, and amazing mash-up by you! Win-win!
This is sublime, perfect. A true tribute to the Shat.
Well done!!! That must have taken a very long time to do!! Loved it! 💕
Some people have way too much time on their hands. Which is why we have awesome things like this. :)
imagine what we'd get if we just paid creative people to be creative, instead of needing everything to be a commercial success
I LOVE this song,so relevant
Hilarious. Nailed the tone! I would love to meet the creative genius behind this.

The best cover version of any song ever, and I state this without the faintest trace of irony.
Agreed - for some reason it just works, although "Jackson and Shatner" should have the same impact as "bacon and soap". Still.....
Truth!
I won’t argue it’s bloody awesome

This is the definitive version for me. Sorry Pulp.
Still gets better and funnier with every viewing - once again, thank you, , thank you......
I keep watching it too! lol :) it is a fun watch and particularly like the film reel slide bit
This was better than the last 3 Star Wars movies, and maybe the last 6.
