I discovered this track about 12 years ago and instantly fell in love with it. It’s got the highest play count in my music library and is the best and only version of the song!
The album is _William Shatner Has Been_ and I second Tim's recommendation. I have no idea how we live in a universe where William Shatner makes great music albums, but we do and we must accept and enjoy the fact.
You know, Shatner is usually eye-roll inducing, but this song as peformed is simply great to the point where it nearly brings me to tears....kudos to Joe Jackson for making it work.
@@kevinbortz2854 Ben Folds produced it. Shatner sings with Joe Jackson. But to your point, yeah, I guess it's debatable who or what makes this work so well. I wasn't aware that Folds produced it and thanks for the nudge to look that up.
Exactly! I knew that it's Joe Jackson (still looking smooth!), but I did not know of Folds' part The two of them, and Shatner of course, created a hilarious, and epic, cover!
P.S. If you want to hear the epitome of Shatner over-the-top, look for his version of Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds "It's a GIRL!" (as if he just discovered the only surviving human left alive on a far-flung space station after an interstellar attack) Evidently, when he was with friends, Captain Kirk enjoyed peyote, out in the desert, and...
I think Ben Folds is the world's biggest Joe Jackson fan. So much joy on his face while JJ is totally killing this. May have said this in the comments before. I love this so much. What a combination of great weirdos.
I mean, the audio is the album version and its not even close to matching the video here. I'd love to see a real video of Shatner and Jackson doing this song, but this ain't it.
@@rubydazzler Well could be ...WATSON'S CONCOCTION AVILON...or the kippers for breakfast with a daily dose of ...META TARO BLU-RAY.....fingers crossed not a Woman of Sagittarius extraction ...oh Ruby helped a wee bit .
The man, the legend, the captain my captain, William shatner my favourite actor, this was exceptionally interesting, the audience looked enthusiastic, guess they was tired from all the applause William got when he beamed down...😂
Shatner just took Pulp and added "THE MOD" legitimacy to it. I close my eyes and see this in a coffee house in in 1967, in Toronto - Kensington Village maybe - and Shatner is "SHATNER" from 1967 fronting this. It just seems more right.
So is the entire video is just faked?. The audio is directly from the album, the video portion is often out of sync with it to the point of even showing Joe singing into the mic when you can't hear his voice, and what initially sounds like the crowd singing along is clearly a choir on a closer listen. Enjoyable at any rate--seeing Shatner having fun is--well, fun. Though I wish they hadn't added the T J Hooker shot right at the "Because you think poor is cool" climax line, but I do like seeing the latter Shatner having fun. And the ultimate self-parody of Shatner, famous at such a young age, singing about someone wanting to pretend to be part of the working class....

Ben Folds, not Joe Jackson.

Only Shatner, baby. Only Shatner.
Great combination of actor (Shatner), singer (Joe Jackson), and producer (Ben Folds) and the musicians and chorus to create this gem.
Ben Folds produced and played keyboards, Shatner does Shatner, but for mine, Joe Jackson's soaring vocals fucking make this so incredibly epic!
The original Pulp version is outstanding, but this takes it even higher ! Has Been ? He sure has
eh tbh i prefer this over pulps as he was going thru his slurring stage
I've always loved this version. ❤
Channeling that inner Kirk
I had no idea this was with THE Joe Jackson. Hearts go out all over this video!
FANTASTIC
joe jackson. legend. nuff said
The Star Trek / TJ Hooker edits are a nice touch. 😄
With the Priceline cut-out, and so much of Spock (Nimoy), too
A great video!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion… but if you can’t see the beauty in this… “shrug”

Now the definitive version of this song.
That was awsome. FOREVER MY ❤ WILLIAM SHATTNER‼️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖
Best. Cover. Ever.
Just may be the greatest cover of all time. Where did this live clip come from? Did TV Land actually air this at some point? I have many questions.
This is my JAM!!!
Thanks you soooooo much for this!
This is a visceral scream of rage
Captain James T. Kirk, in space you never live like common people...Great song, Greetings from the wild west of austria
William Shatner is an insane genius ! 😂😢😮everybody dance along !
I love the original but I also love this version just as much if not even MORE!
Brilliant
Joe Jackson? Wow!
Right? And Ben Folds on keys so crazy!

The Fact That Ben Folds Is just In The Background Is Kinda funny
He produced this record.

amazing thanks
Joe Jackson cameo
any other joe jackson songs kinda like this? especially his vocals, yelling style kinda?
'I'm the Man' is a great song. Also 'Don't Wanna be Like That, 'Got the Time'.. Check out his first two albums, which were quite 'punky' generally
wow you did great job
thx
개쩐다 정말 O_O
I love Shatner's unique delivery, but it's Joe Jackson who makes this version catch fire. BTW, Brits don't call cigarettes' "flags".
SHATNER É UMA LENDA MESMO
DE :
" LUCY AND SKY WITH 💎 ""
A ""ROCKET MAN "
PASSANDO PELO CLASSICS
" TOTAL ECLIPSES OF THE❤ "

Presumably he listens to the song he’s covering beforehand?
Nice suggestion Bob 🔥

Whenever I hear this song, I’m reminded of Christia Freeland, Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of Canada.
Every time I see a clip of some rich white actress at a BLM rally I think of this song
so true......and me when i see rich heiresses of the green party and FFF followers aka "activists" babbling in their media here in Germany.....
As an actor, why is he reading the lines?
But amazing video anyway
That’s what Shatner is known for.
Because he was well into his 70s when this was recorded and performed.
