Sonja N. Durham was the executive director of the Haus Of Gaga from 2009 until her death in 2017. Working as a production coordinator, backstage touring coordinator, executive assistant, managing director, but more than anything, Gaga's best friend.
For years prior, Sonja had been fighting breast cancer. Unfortunately the doctor/hospital she had been going to initially were unprofessional to say the least, and missed her stage IV diagnosis completely. It wasn't until Lady Gaga herself called up Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong in 2015, that she was properly diagnosed. During the process of switching from that hospital to Dr. Pat, she tried to get her tissue biopsy samples transferred over to Dr. Pat, but the hospital never did it & simply told her the information was "never entered" in their system. It took sick Sonja herself going down to the records office for the process to be completed.
Unfortunately, the cancer had already spread to her lungs & brain. Dr. Pat at one point told Sonja that if she had been able to see him sooner, it would be a whole different story (potentially curable), telling her "I wish we were speaking in 2012".
In 2015 Sonja was ordered by her doctor to stop all work, which Gaga fully supported. As a self proclaimed work-o-holic, this was hard for her. But she kept herself busy & healthy by: doing yoga 3 times a week, working out with a trainer 3 times a week, doing cardio at least 4 times a week, having weekly hyperbaric oxygen chamber sessions and going to a an acupuncturist. She cut out alcohol, dairy, caffeine, and sugar.
On March 18th, 2017 Sonja got married to her partner of 9 years, Andre Dubois, at Gaga's home in Malibu. Only 2 months, she would lose her fight.
Sonja passed away on May 19th, 2017 while filming of the last scene for 'A Star Is Born' was taking place. Gaga left the set immediately after receiving a call that Sonja was in distress; she could hear Sonja moaning loudly in the background of the call. 10 minutes before Gaga's arrival, Sonja passed away.
As someone who was in the Gaga world for years and followed her every move, I had only ever heard & seen great things about Sonja; the fans loved her. As the fourth anniversary of her passing is coming up, I decided to make this tribute to keep her in our thoughts. We miss you, Sonja.

Sonja grew up right across the street from us for 13 years in the 80’s and 90’s in Heritage Park south of Houston. I remember she had the first house I’d ever seen with solar panels. She was 5 years older than me but she was friends with my best friend’s older brother, so I saw her often. Had no idea what had happened to her after we moved. She was very sweet.
That's why that song hits so hard when she sings that original.
Breast cancer is a horrible thief of life. I’m fighting the monster at stage 4 as well. Everyday I am afraid that the cancer will get worse but that’s when the strength kicks in. The fight isn’t over because I’m at stage 4. We are fighters and the battle is brutal. I’m fighting for my family. For my daughter. And for myself. I deserve to live a long life. And I’m not going to abandon my daughter. I am strong. I am not a loser.

I hope you are doing okay, keep fighting. I’m sorry you have to experience this, life throws us in many battles… all we can do is live in the moment take it day by day. My sister had stage 3 lung cancer at just 23 and lost a lung, keep up the fight, love the little things and your loved ones and stay present. Wishing you well.
