    Liszt probably revised this second version because he realized he was the only one able to play them in tempo.

    Oh noooo, I was gonna make this exact video for my channel 😭 Same audio and everything! But it’s okay, you’ve clearly put a lot of work into it! I would just HIGHLY recommend making the title “Franz Liszt - S.137, 12 Grandes Études” (or something that mentions his name and S.137) and changing the thumbnail to a picture of like the first bar of the first etude or something, so this vid can catch people’s attention easier. Thank you for making this vid, it’s definitely one that is important for the classical music side of TH-cam!!

      it's not supposed to get that slow at parts like 33:16 , sure the marking reads 'molto appassionato' but there's excessive rubato. compare it to the midi, which has little tempo variations. the pianist's goal should be under 7 minutes. (i agree the midi is a bit too fast some parts but still this is 1.5 minutes slower)

    Very impressed!!! He's the only person I have ever heard play the intro to the mighty #8 correctly! - with the melody picked out from the surrounding whirl of notes. Nobody can play it!! Someone once commented (might have been Leslie Howard) that this part was "an impossibility" and it gives us an idea of what might have been Liszt's abilities...
    These earlier "grandes" versions of the 12 etudes contain not only numerous 'ridiculously difficult' patches but some amazingly musical passages that were omitted from the later version. The sweeping intro to #7 is fab. It's interesting that an early review of the pieces (Schumann??) said they were "studies in storm and dread fit for at most ten or twelve players in the world".... I wonder how many people can actually perform them nowadays? Not many!
    ps. Well done for all the work you did adding the score throughout, that was some painstaking work. top upload. 10/10

      I thank you very much, but I myself am not proud at all of the work I did in this video. I spent way too long making this video, and it is filled to the brim with some really stupid errors which hurt me whenever I watch through this video. If I had done it now, it would've taken me 3, 4 hours tops and would br infinitely more accurate. Anyways, it was Schumann who said that.

    • @thenotsookayguy
      @thenotsookayguy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I uploaded the manuscripts for the S.139 Études on IMSLP. For them, Liszt just decided to purchase a copy of the S.137 Études and just go over them with ink or paste in some pages, which not only saved him a bunch of time, but can help you visualise what changes he made to the Ètudes when revising them.
      Stuff like Mazeppa and No. 10 have been replaced completely, No. 1 only has a couple notes dotted here and there, but most of the Études only really got a buncha changes, and maybe some cut sections. Fu Fol-a has a surprising amount of revisions considering how similar it sounds, but the main reason for that, it that a lot of the revisions didn't change the Grande Étude too much and just served to make it less awkward or he just made a slight change to some section that he thought would make it sound better.
