One thing that I kind of miss in the first look is the pen. The Pen is a big plus for me as a student as markups and all kinds of notetaking as well as heavier workflows just work! This makes for a powerful student machine, that kan handle quite a bit of studying.

Good review Dieter! I just wanted to respond to the question you and Nilay keep asking about who this laptop is for. The Surface Book is tailor made for the design and construction industry. You need graphics horse power when you are designed at your desk but you need a large tablet when you go to your construction site to look a your drawings or fly through your model. I know many of my colleagues in the architecture, engineering and construction industry that love their Surface Books.

    • @Emilyspace_
      @Emilyspace_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

I'd argue that this is also built for students (probably mostly in the same architecture and engineering fields). The tablet form is perfectly portable to be able to take handwritten notes on during lectures or docking to a keyboard for essays that get uncomfortable on a flimsy Surface Pro keyboard. For math students, writing with the pen is perfect for equations. For design/architecture students, it's powerful enough to run graphics and editing software. Unfortunately, it's definitely not in a normal student budget.

I do not own a Surface laptop yet. I am actually looking into buying one of these or maybe the less expensive Surface Pro. What I intend to use this is for reading digital sheet music (when detached from the keyboard, of course) while neatly placed on the music stand of my piano. The bigger screen appeals to me compared to the smaller Surface Pro. Also to use this for writing or notating music using the pencil. I have seen a notation app called StaffPad and I was blown away at the features. Aside from that, I want to be able to use this for word processing, productivity and media consumption. I have yet to see musicians who use Surface and review the product (it’s mostly iPad Pro users who do) and see how useable this is in a live music performance setting.

I have the 15 in SB2, and I love it. I am not a huge gamer, but I love the tablet feature as well as working with the Surface Pen, and more. IT fits my needs, and that's the important part. Yes, it is a little pricy, and the CPU/GPU could be better. I have never used Thunderbolt, so I can't comment on whether I am affected by that or not. One of the things I wish they would have done with the SB3 is to add some USB Ports into the tablet portion. I do presentations, and sometimes there isn't a BT/Wifi Projector, and I have to use the base.

    Excited to see the review!
For me, I accept some of the trade-offs since I actually find this form factor pretty much perfect for me. I need a laptop that can be used a pure tablet with full pen support without that bulky weird feeling keyboard at the back on most 2-in-1s, and still respectably powerful enough with GPU for graphically heavier load and occasional gaming. The 3:2 aspect ratio is also great, I wished they upgraded the panel to improve Adobe RGB gamut. Since I do art, photography and programming with some gaming on the go for LAN party, this is pretty much tick all the boxes and a balanced device for me. If there is another device with similar form factor on another brand that can fit better spec with lower price, I would go for that. But for now, this is pretty much only in the market, thus in its own class.
For those who is looking for better price to performance laptop, Surface Book isn't a right device for it. Traditional workstation laptops that has 45W CPU would be the best choice still.

i think one of the big problems with people reviewing the SB is that they say it not Top of the Tier here and there. The SB is about being pretty good at everything which is way less limiting than a laptop that does one thing super well and some things are just not possible.

Not exactly the same. The function keys have been remapped which is a feature that Microsoft has been trying to get right for three generations. The first-generation surface book did not have function keys assigned to change the brightness of the screen. 2nd generation had dedicated f keys for that. They've been remapped again.

As a 15" SB2 user, I am kinda disappointed in this update. It's been a few years, and… it's kinda just a spec bump. I really hoped for a more refined form factor. I *love* using it as a touch/pen device (I use it flipped, but attached to keep the 'good' GPU running). You don't really get the versatility from other tablets/laptops.

It's not just the tablet. The whole point of this form factor is the canvas mode when you take off the screen, spin it around, and put it back on. You then have an angled screen for pen input with all the battery and GPU. This is pretty much the only option for a whole range of professionals.

I have owned many Surface products: Surface Pros, Go, & Books, & they are nice, but most of them had issues. I have been using MSI GS65 & iPad Pro for awhile now, & now more happy.

So when apple refreshes their devices and no change in design, you guys say "best device ever". And in this case, you spend 10 seconds cribbing about no change in design

Well, most people complain about Apple as a bias. But yeah incremental S upgrades are just lazy. Come on apples 13 inch was boring so Microsoft could have totally beat them if they redesigned

Verge is super biased in favor of Apple - from someone who has nearly all Apple products (Macbook Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPad Pro,...)

The only thing that bothered me is that it doesnt have Thunderbolt port. Why not make 2 different models one with and one without one if they are concerned with security issues. So the buyer decides it.

Still rocking the original Surface Book and it's been a dream for me! Surprisingly reliable hinge design, I was expecting it to break or get weaker by now, but it still works and feels as intended! Hopefully I'll upgrade soon, because the 940 equivalent (apparently) GPU isn't really cut out for me, but I have a desktop for that kind of work tbh

I have the SB2. I usually just carry the tablet part to work and back. At work I dock, at home I attach it to the keyboard. The tablet is actually lighter than all other computers strong enough for me. Lighter than macbook air 11", lighter than the surface pro.

Not only is the processor a 15W 4-core processor you'd typically find in ultrabooks, it's the exact same processor (1065G7) you get in the Core i7 variant of the Surface Pro 7 (I own one, typing on it right now - it's great). I owned the 13" SB1 and the 15" SB2, and IMO unless you really need the detachable screen (its use is very limited: seriously unwieldy - esp on the 15" model, very limited battery life, no GPU acceleration) or you really like the 3:2 aspect ratio (it's great for coding, writing, research work etc), or you just enjoy having a laptop that's a bit different (totally get that), this is a very 'pro' pricetag for what, in several key ways, is a very 'non-pro' machine. For the same money as the 15" version of the SB3 you can get a similarly specced MacBook Pro 16" or Dell XPS 15 with a heck of a lot more processing power.
