    What a surprise, and a treat, it was to run across this! Dad -LOVED- the Highland Games, even when he was critically injured at Grandfather Mountain as a judge by an wayward hammer throw. He died Sept. 30, 2021. THANK YOU for posting this. ( 24.20 Rev Arnold Pope - Duke - Wt lifter into his 80's One of the better caber tossers. Started every meet with a joke )

    I must brag, I had the best light stone throw in the country. I won Dinnie Stone and the heavy Braemar Stone as well as light. I was 42 at the time

Pete and I got together in the early 1970'S to figure how to throw events from pictures in Webster and Allens Books. We took 3/4 inch pipe and put 22 lb barbells on it. Took Paint can and melted lead to get wt. Fred Vaughan said the 28 was the best. The lead had spread out and made all the weight further away from thrower.

    37.56 Caber cutting . In this era a tree too big to be turned was selected. We all had to take a try. Next we would decide how much to cut. Short wanted 3", Fred wanted 2 feet. Ed Holcomb or John Severance would decide. We would cut until 6 places were filled. We might toss 5 to 8 tosses.

    57.31 Mike was 20 years younger than me but we traveled to many meets together. In those days he was a woodworker. He made two desks for me. On our trips, we would stop at wood mills. Later he became a selector of rare wood for a world famous guitar company. He was given a first run guitar that every rock singer received. He also played fiddle in bands and made fiddles. His wife Debbie was also unique. I could fill the page with stories. Was on national TV racing Carl Lewis in a 100 yard dash. Could do a "quadruple under jumprope".

    118.22 Elizabeth Roberts. In 1971 I met Betsy and John Severance at a small game in a small park in Wash. DC. John had a caber and showed us how.The last time I saw her was at John's funeral in 2016. So many of these people have died.The saddest is Fred Vaughan. He had both legs cut off. When I went south I would stop by the nursing home.
