Great old footage.
Fantastic film. So many useful and imitative movements that have been forgotten in favor of only power gains. Range of application is most important- lots of core and arching power in these guys. lnteresting to see markers for javelin draw back for the athletes actually on the runway- a shoe for Kopyto and a white ball for Sidlo.
Indees Jeff, great footage
Magnusson girl is a little magnus bum look a like
Well this just popped up on my feed. It’s made my day!! Great memories. I was actually part of the Athletes team that competed against the Footballers in this first edition of Superteams. Geoff was at the centre of some hilarious stories. Always larger than life. You were a star. Rest now big man…
Brian Siders is terrifically strong. wow. Raw Squat- 785 lb/356 kg. Raw Bench Press - 650 lb/295 kg. Raw Deadlift - 840 lb/381 kg! His last Arnold was 2010, when he placed low (10th). His highest placing was 5th. And he is natural; no PEDs
Arnold did something important with this contest. This was the best strongman contest in the world for a number of years at a critical time when it was needed for the sport. Now there are others but this show pioneered it. WSM had failed for a number of reasons.
Nice! Something not stressed, especially in the west enough. Flexible strength. Johann Vetter for example. Too much over strength training, destroying his body. He has a very developed weightlifting body. But destroying himself in the process.
l read the articles he wrote while in high school and based my training on the weighted ball throw plan he listed. Got my university coach to buy this film and the ''stubby'' javelins in 1975.
Ed Tucker was coach at the US Coast Guard Academy.
@@Gorski213 Aweseom recordings by mr. Tucker Jeff 👌
Francis is still heavily involved in the sport
Takes me back to the late 1990s when I was in highschool and discovered this amazing contest on ESPN2
Ouchie
Most of those events have been discontinued because they were too dangerous or else they were not really good tests of strength. Interesting how the sport has evolved to standard events.
now everytime allmost the same events : farmerswalk stones etc .
@@gerlofholkema3110 It would be good if they came up with some new ones, I suppose. I like the static events, as in the Arnold, because strength is impressive. One thing they used to do but you never see anymore is lift vehicles or platforms with people on them as Louis Cyr did. Arm wrestling, bar bending and sumo type events are probably not wise and best discontinued. Fortissimus had some original and very hardcore events I've not seen before or since.
Geoff Capes must have put out a hell of a lot more power. Pretty shameful loss co side ring his size
RIP cousin Geoff - it was always a pleasure to see him on TV for an event or commercial or on a video

man … that’s some crazy stuff 😂

Thank you for posting this. Jim Banich was my high school sweetheart and a dear friend. We lost him to suicide in 2014. His dream was to compete in the Olympics, and I always wondered if his failure to make the team in these Olympic trials began the long spiral to that tragic day.
Samuelson looks so young -- and quite a bit smaller than he later appears.
210 kg for overhead is huge (Gary Taylor) Since then Z and Eddie Hall did 215 and 216 kg respectively on the axle press -- which they also cleaned. No cleaning motion in this competition, however, making it easier. Still very impressive though.
Jeff’s loving wife, softly spoken, devoted and supportive of her husband, behind every great man etc…
Great technicians.
Awesome
I keep watching this to remind myself what decent roads used to look like. Thanks for posting.
I kid u not I was a kid of like 15 years old 1981 the old Track Series we used too have in NZ in the Northern Hemisphere winter Jan-Feb down here Auckland & Geoff Capes had won the Shot Put competition & was leaning on a normal sized bus that the Athletes had come in & he is back to it breathing heavily & the Whole bloody bus was moving if only I had a camera omg I’ve never seen anything like it before or since it was incredible
And he goes on to throw 94.58m and win the Olympics in 76! World record and Olympic gold at the same time - awesome!!
The way they thrown the stones onto the barrels !
Up the toffees!
Tremedous. This is what I want to see on telly.Forget the Prem and all the prima donnas,I want to see a lovely street with mums kids and old men smoking pipes watching celebs do random sporting tasks.Great stuff.
I absolutely love this...I have Frank Ryan's books and this looks like the field he was coaching (and the trenchcoat!).
This was not a push press. He did initiate the press movement with a body heave (aggressively pushing forward the hips, and using a backbend). This was still a valid olympic press
I wonder what his “real” training was like.
He deadlifted 500kg before they knew it was a thing. Time passed. In comes Eddie like nothing happened.
Ray noble would’ve beat Geoff at any other finale except tug of war I reckon
awesome when the world was a happier place
George Wood threw me his goalkeepers gloves when he played for Cardiff against Enfield in the FA Cup and Geoff Capes gave me and my brother the V’s when he was behind us in a car on the flyover in Cardiff!
As a young boy i remember going to goodison park around this time to see several of evertons new signings in teaining, and george wood was one of them, such a happier time in the UK then, ok, we had the tories 🤮...but as a boy i was incredibly happy, compare it to the absolute madness we're seing now 😖....good to see geoff looking so fit and healthy, both were nice fellers.....where did it go wrong in this country ???
Gentle giant.
42:06 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 That's why he is the favorite of the fans
I feel like these events used to be much more grip and arm focused (no straps, lighter but more awkward implements that you can't easily get your mass under), whereas today they're more tailored to moving sheer weight, taking grip out of it with straps, and locked in with bigger but less awkwards impliments. Nobody talks about this. The old school seems much more athletic to me/ transferable to moving random objects, which aren't necessarily made to be moved, and things like wrestling, arm wrestling etc. For some reason people stopped talking about straps in the deadlift when the established logical standard since the lift was invented was no straps on a normal bar. Benny Magnusson and Andy Bolton are still the best ever in that form. I think Andy still has the stiff bar no strap record.
Once the iron curtain came down in the early 90’s the game changed. I know it’s era’s, training, nutrition and recovery now. Big Z would have walked through this like it was warm up! Anyway, go big Geoff, I was a huge fan, watched all this in the 80’s. RIP legend!
He always reminds me of Desperate Dan , a larger than life hero , strong as an ox and an appetite to match . RIP Legend
