    I had no problems with my i7 4790k for the first couple of years I had it, then all of a sudden it just started hitting 100 degrees and throttling. I couldn't figure out what the issue was, so ended up removing the 4.4ghz boost capabilities and the temps never went over 80 degrees after that. But obviously that wasn't good enough, why have a processor that can't use its own boost? Such a waste. I obviously ruled out the Corsair AIO cooler as the issue. That was working fine.
    So I decided to de-lid for the first time ever and I have to say WOW!! Liquid metal (The same one that Kyle uses in the video) made an incredible difference. My CPU is now back to being able to boost as it should and my temperatures never go over 45 degrees while gaming and whilst running AIDA64, the max temp it hits is 55c.
    So if anyone is having the same kind of problems, I'd say you should contemplate doing the same. After all, if a noob like me can do it... anyone can. ;)
    Quick edit... I forgot to say that when I removed the IHS of the CPU, the Intel thermal paste had dried out and literally crumbled away. This CPU had been running at stock settings since the day I bought it, no overclocking has ever been performed on it. So that says a lot about the thermal paste that Intel uses. Lol.

    • @AnonIllumi
      @AnonIllumi 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      daft question new to de-lidding is thermal paste on the CPU to the IHS and do you reckon this can be done with AMD CPU's in the same way? (only seen it on intel so far)

    • @stageselectca
      @stageselectca 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hmmm I have a 4790k that runs pretty hot... not sure I can justify the cost of a delid tool + liquid metal... but tempting :S

    • @Ironside32
      @Ironside32 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Between the CPU chip and the IHS, there is thermal paste, but it's Intels' own and that's not very good. To be honest, I've never seen de-lidding done with an AMD processor either, perhaps TH-cam may have some videos on it, if it is at all possible.
      Sorry I can't be of any real help there. I don't want to give any false information out.

    • @Ironside32
      @Ironside32 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      My problem was so bad that I almost bought a new 8700k to replace it. But that would have meant buying a new Motherboard and DDR4 RAM too, so that combined cost convinced me that taking the chance of doing a de-lid was worth it, after all, if it failed I'd still have to change it all out anyway.
      I don't know where you're located, but I'm in the UK. I used the "Overclockers" website to purchase my Der8auer de-lid kit for £25 (the day after I bought mine, they had used ones for sale at £15, which I would have bought if available at the time.) and the Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut for £7. Plus some thermal resistant silicon sealant from Amazon UK for £5 (to re-lid the CPU, which as Kyle says, isn't strictly necessary, again I wish I'd known that. Lol). So the total cost was only £37, but without the sealant & buying the used de-lid kit, it would have only been £22. But I'm still VERY happy that I only had to pay £37 to fix my issue and breathe new life into my system. It's a LOT better than £700+ for all new gear.
      One thing I will say is... If you do decide to do it, make sure you don't get any liquid metal on anything but the CPU chip, to be sure, I used my wifes' clear nail polish to paint on the little metal contacts under the IHS before applying the liquid metal, just to be sure. There are some great instructional videos here on TH-cam that'll tell you all you need to know. And as I said before, I've never done anything like this before, for fear of wrecking stuff. But this gamble paid off in spades! My temps are so low now that I have more than enough headroom for if I ever want to overclock.

    • @stageselectca
      @stageselectca 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      i'm in Canada, I can get the der8auer tool for about $54 on amazon but looks like there's some cheaper $24 versions which should work fine too... and about $20 for conductonaut.. so about $45 total. not awful I guess.. might consider it ;)

    Forgot to clean the glue from the chip pcb and IHS, didn't spread the liquid metal on the IHS and didn't even put protective coating such as clear nail polish around the die. Which we all can probably assume Wifesauce has. Smooth one, Kyle.

    Nice job Kyle! My first delid went almost perfectly as well. My initial delid, I didn't put enough liquid metal on the die and IHS, so I had to do it again. I was super conservative with the liquid metal, so I applied more on the 2nd run, and boom- 33*C Idling and 70*C Max under load.

The process was simple enough with the cool tool:)) One little piece of advice, it helps so much to apply liquid metal to the IHS and also put a very good silicone if not industrial silicone. As you probably know the liquid metal is the most efficient when it gets very hot so these 2 things help the process. Love your content! Keep up the good work!

    I never delidded in my life and delidded my 7820x 8-core cpu running around 4.9ghz all cores before the delid. I found it to be a very easy job, time consuming tho as I wanted to scrape away all of the old intel sealant and re-applied my own RTV on the 4 corners of the IHS. I used liquid metal on both sides and dropped 15-18c .. I think I would have dropped more but I also changed from an ek supremacy water block to a x299 monoblock at the same time so now I am cooling my VRMs with my loop as well and I used thermal grizzly minus thermal pads for my VRMs and wow what a difference, I went from 90-100c VRM temps to 30c at idle and 48c under full load! My loop is def running a little hotter now obsorbing all that extra heat which is why I feel I am not seeing over a 20c temp drop on my cpu. Im planning on going for a 5ghz all-core overclock later on today because with the added CPU and VRM cooling I have now I believe I can finally get stable at 5ghz.👍🏻

    Seems to me a better option is to polish the lid and contact surface on the cooler/heatsink with a flat plate (or glass sheet) and 1000-2000 grit sand-paper. Note that the sand paper must be very flat for this to work, hence the need to use a plate underneath. This will make the surface much more uniform and lessen the need for the thermal paste to conduct heat. Thermal paste is typically NOT a good heat conductor. Its only there because its better than just having air in the gap instead. The lid itself doesn't have that high a thermal resistance, but the matte surface and engraved text adds lots of valleys and ridges that hamper heat conduction. Theoretically if you were to lap them together to an optical finish and get them very clean you could skip the heat sink grease entirely since they would be in nearly perfect contact. You can tell if your at an optical finish if the two parts stay stuck together after you squeeze all the air out. This should give you essentially the same result as de-lidding since one surface is now a much better conductor of heat.

    A good practice I have seen too is putting just a tiny bit of the crappiest thermal compound, mount in the motherboard socket with the socket clamp, then remove and check the thermal paste spread, if it's not spreading evenly then it will likely require lapping the die or the IHS which would suck so bad.

    You can use ACRYLIC conformal coating to help prevent a short, folks tend to use the silicone version which makes little sense. It will work as they both do the same job (to prevent the liquid metal from coming in contact with a capacitor) but the acrylic version is far better (about 5 times) for electrical insulation which would be beneficial for this type of application. If you are still nervous after this you can even put some thin kapton tape on top of the conformal coating after it has been given time to cure. Kapton tape is also very good for preventing a short (it's sole purpose) and it is made to withstand heat far beyond what a CPU/GPU will ever see.

Point two, yes if it is disturbed, re mounted it can lose contact with the IHS. Really more of a PITA. Better to use some really good thermal paste, might be a few degrees hotter, but it will last longer, and not give problems between remounts.

    Also, if the temperature measurement is at the actual die, 100 deg. C is not that bad. You really don't need to worry until you get past 125 deg C. Most semiconductors will work ok-ish up to about 150 deg. C. By about 200 deg. C is when they start to degrade exponentially with each degree of temperature increase, from actual testing done on components at my last job. FWIW 100 deg C on older computers was a big deal since the temperature measurement was from a thermistor somewhere nearby the IC. The actual die temps could easily be 50-100 degrees hotter, hence why it mattered so much.

    I did my delidding with a crusty old vice. Just put the cpu in so the one side touches the pcb and the other side touches the heatsink.

      Intel doesn't use liquid metal to cool the CPUs because liquid metal is not as durable as the thermal compound they use. Liquid metal needs to be replaced "frequently" as opposed to the thermal compound thats last for years. There aren't many people willing to use LM because of the risk and the hastle, despite the great improvement.

    You could probably get another 5-10 degrees if you remove the old silicone. It looked kinda thick and could be causing space where there should be none. Also, the fact that Steve didn't clean off the original silicone, or apply new is the only reason yours started overheating to begin with, because it probably shifted during the loop change. Also applying an even coat on the IHS as well as the die will help.
