My old coworker is Chamorro, and she said that the big reason why spam is so universally loved on Guam is because canned meats will stay good even when weather causes power outages. I can see the appeal of processed trash food when the alternative is going hungry or the risk of food poisoning. I don't doubt that there's a convenience factor as well. I know that I don't grow, hunt, or gather any of my own food, and I wouldn't know where to start if I needed to. My grandfather is Chamorro (Mendiola), he came to the mainland United states after being in the military 35 years ago. I never knew much about traditional Chamorro culture or the impact of US colonization because my mother was raised to be a traditional mainland American. I am so happy to see this series talking about the forgotten colony of Guam. Thank you for taking the time to interview the natives and shead light on the social, political, and economic issues they face. This is by far my favorite series on this channel so far, although I admit I might be a little biased Haha 🐟💕😁
My dads side of the family is Chamorro, I’m 25%. My grandma doesn’t talk much about her home so I always find it interesting hearing/reading about Guam. Would love to visit there one day. Though my father and I can’t stand spam, my grandma loves it which goes to show the period of time she grew up in.
Pia L It's really not that expensive. It's about 6.50 for a gallon of milk and maybe 4 bucks for a container of butter. Sure, more expensive than the mainland, but they were making it out to be stupidly expensive. But I think they should get rid of that act and allow other countries to ship goods in. It would be far less expensive in the long run.
I’m from there now in California and let me tell you this. I felt like a king when I first came here and saw that everything was extremely less than what it was back in the islands
Hann, that's double the price , all other goods are twice the price too , including the cooker from china they got via mainland america. these islands , including Pueddo rico are america's golden gooses.
@@code5829 hey dickhead.....watch who you call an idiot. The only idiot I see is a loudmouth ass#&@e displaying how stupid he is. What the hell does what you just said have to do with the price of tea in China moron? I made a point about their local culture and food. As in it should be preserved and brought back as 1) it's clearly a healthier diet. Apparently your IQ is so low that you entirely missed the part in the video about the health and obesity problems on the island. 2) Food is closely linked to culture. In order to preserve their unique culture they need to bring back their original diet to some degree. So what the hell does that have to do with any possible invasion, and your obnoxious response towards me? But let's unpack your idiotic point since you brought it up. It's funny how so many Pacific island nations such as Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Marshall islands etc ....are all doing just fine. No one is invading them. Nor are they under any threat of such a thing outside of your over active imagination. But I guess you are looking to excuse colonialism and imperialism because it just bothers you that any indigenous people take issue with their subjegation. I guess they should just know their place huh? You seem like the type that is just fine with colonialism and imperialism....... when the US does it. I am sure you HATE it when any other country does it (#hyopocrisysucks). Guam was colonised you half wit. The US was not their government before that. Nor did they vote or elect to be a US colony (I thought the US was all about democracy). So I guess you were right that they would be invaded..... because their current government is the one that invaded them. The irony in that vis a vie your obnoxious response is hilarious. That all being said.....Guam is what it is. Whatever it becomes or doesn't should be up to the local people. And at the very least they have every right in the world to assert their culture and its preservation. Whether idiots like you like it or not.
The people of Guam are amazing! So, I hope more of them return to their ancestral roots for the sake of their children’s health and prosperity 🇬🇺 People with healthy eating patterns live longer and are at lower risk for serious health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. In contrast, being unhealthy is associated with high medical expenses, decreased quality of life, and lost productivity. A higher level of education is associated with higher income and greater wealth, which are also correlated with better health.
Reintroduce your traditions, take back your island, eat the old way and regain your health. Wishing you and your people all the best and never give up.
Powerful documentary! When, I was little, my mom would open up a can of SPAM and fry it with chopped potatoes and onions and make burritos for us. She didn't actually buy the SPAM, it usually came in boxes of donated food from a church charity group.

Haf Adai. used to work for the Guam DOE 1974-1978, I love this place and its people. They welcomed me as family. The most beautiful sunsets are on Guam. I stayed with friends on Nimitz Hill. Their backyard was littered with shell casings from World War II. This was only a year or two after the lone Japanese soldier who had hid out in the jungle for 30 years not knowing the war had ended. Even then, people were lamenting how much the culture had changed the way people fed themselves. My friends told me that in the past when someone killed carabou, the whole community gathered to feast on it. Post Spanish, Japanese and American occupation and colonization, refrigeration signaled the end of sharing.
Good for you. You have so much sun. There’s no reason why you can’t grow food on the island and have livestock that provide meat and milk, not to mention enjoying the abundance from the ocean. You should be eating better than most people from other countries. I think it’s absolutely fantastic that the young people are helping raise the level of consciousness and shaping the future.
I heard that Spam was so popular in Hawaii, but I didn't know that the same was true of Guam as well. They are right to go back to the old way of eating and get away from the fast food idea of eating. Once that happens the people will live longer and be healthier too.
My family is from Puerto Rico, I was born and raised for pretty much my whole entire life in the US. I also lived in PR for about 4 years when I was a kid, when my mother divorced my father and took us there and I go there as much as I can through the years. I love my island. But, Guam reminds me so much of my island. Pretty much all the same issues, anyone from guam in the comments look up PR and all of it's health issues stemming from colonialism and you will see that we are cousins in the fight to live a healthy life. I think that Hawaii, Guam and Puerto Rico should hook up and fight the Jones Act together. Join in Voices so that it may be stronger, louder, with more and conviction.

Nicholas Pereiro you're correct. The other half is from tourist. But lately it's been slowly going down due of them only focusing on the Japanese market
I’m from Puerto Rico and Guam is going thru the same thing as we do here. The Jones act, here is $6.00 for a gallon of milk; everything is expensive, more expensive than the mainland, USA. Cancer is a big role here because of the spanish american war, the island/city of vieques is exactly like guam. The US army took over the entire island, kicked everyone out of the east side of the Island/city of vieques just to test bombs and when they had no land left and moved everyone back and bombed the west side. We feel the same pain The people of Guam 🇬🇺 are going thru. Our culture is gone as well, taíno Indians don’t exist do to spanish and Americans killing them.... this is just sad. We need justice!
that jones act is a killah! here on oahu, hawaii, buying milk from a farmer on a different island is much more expensive than buying milk from the continental U.S. you would think it'd be cheaper. all these U.S territories (american samoa, guam, puerto rico, u.s. virgin islands, U.S mariana islands) and hawaii would benefit a lot if they would get rid of the jones act or at least to amend it. if i order/buy something from japan, they would pass us, go straight to cali and then from cali re-route and come back to us here in hawaii. and we as consumers have to foot the bill for the extra expenses (fuel, crew, etc.) smh. why not come straight here? mind you, the distance from hawaii to cali is about 2500 miles. so about 5000 miles worth of fuel and crew time, extra passed on to consumers. it's one of the main reasons why everything is so expensive here cause 90% of everything we have/need/want, needs to be shipped in. heeelllllppp lol.

It’s hard to fight for independence. Especially trying to fight it from the US. The US can’t keep their hands off of anyone’s land sadly. The money they have, the much power they can get and keep. Same thing with Hawaiʻi. Hawaiʻi loves spam and American fast food. Mostly 99.9% of our food comes from the mainland. So it’s gonna be hard trying to provide food, clothing and shelter for yourself and family if you’re trying to fight for independence. But I do support!
I lived on an island for a couple of years in BWI on the island of Anguilla. It became quickly apparent that no people truly possess freedom if they cant even grow their own food.
"Our food independence is our political independence." This speaks for us all. We need a paradigm shift in our culture in order to leave a livable world for future generations.

With its climate Guam can plant lemongrass, pandanus, kaffir lime, ginger, galangal which in turn can be used to cook really delicious seafood that is abundant there.
Excuse me! $7 for butter and $9 for a gallon of milk. Those food better be comprised of gold. I’m so proud of them for reviving their almost extinct culture.
Those are similar to the prices of butter and milk in New Zealand (where a good portion of the world's dairy product is made.) NZ $7 for 500gms (1lb) of butter and the absolutely cheapest milk at $3.50 for 2 litres (about 0.5 gallon.)
If the American government feels that they need to control the shipping in and out of the American territories via the Jones act then they should pay for the shipping to and from those territories..

The prices for basic things like milk and butter!! Wow that’s really crazy!!!
Yupp a can of tuna can be almost $10
I’m from there now in California and let me tell you this. I felt like a king when I first came here and saw that everything was extremely less than what it was back in the islands
Hann, that's double the price , all other goods are twice the price too , including the cooker from china they got via mainland america. these islands , including Pueddo rico are america's golden gooses.
At the highest on Oahu in Hawaii where I live milk is 11$
oceanian people are so exotic, their body just fit no matter what, love that.
Its really sad seeing how the indigenous culture, way of life, and diet of the Pacific Islanders has been either damaged or destroyed.
If indigenous peoples were not protected via their government’s militaries, foreign countries would conquer them. Idiot.
Young people immersing themselves in their culture. Celebrating it. It's a beautiful thing!
Independence for Guam! I support you in your fight for freedom and decolonization!
Reintroduce your traditions, take back your island, eat the old way and regain your health. Wishing you and your people all the best and never give up.
I'm Samoan and this needs to happen there too? Good work guys
Powerful documentary! When, I was little, my mom would open up a can of SPAM and fry it with chopped potatoes and onions and make burritos for us. She didn't actually buy the SPAM, it usually came in boxes of donated food from a church charity group.

Guam and the Philippines were once under the viceroyalty of Mexico under the Spanish Crown.
I'm in love with this young couple they have brought tears to my eyes .I'm seriously listening and understanding everything you are speaking about process food's are killing FORT WORTH TEXAS and many others. Blessings and more Blessings
They are beautiful souls. Keep doing you and standing up for what you believe in!!!!
Haf Adai. used to work for the Guam DOE 1974-1978, I love this place and its people.

I had a privilege to live in Guam as a child and I really loved it.
I heard that Spam was so popular in Hawaii, but I didn't know that the same was true of Guam as well. They are right to go back to the old way of eating and get away from the fast food idea of eating. Once that happens the people will live longer and be healthier too.
I was truly convinced this was going to be about spam emails
ha, funny guy
I agree, in a way we are cousins. I feel like Islanders are their own subgroup in a lot of ways, especially those of us who were colonized.
That couple is gorgeous!
wow fried fish and breadfruit ... love the connection with all island people
As a Jamaican I wish Independence for Guam and Puerto Rico. One love🇯🇲

I worked in Guam from 1992-1999,chammorros love spam, they called it chammorro steak.
Great series of videos. I’m learning so much about the territories/colonies of the US since I live in one (PR) but we are never taught about each other. Mind blowing how much we sadly have in common.
I’m half black & Singaporean & was raised by chamorra’s cuz my stepped dad married my mom. I always wanted to give back to the people for raising me

When my grandmother came back from Guam (her home land) she was so surprised how cheap stuff was where I live because it is so expensive in guam
That's the sad reality of it . If life on the island was cheaper, I would not hesitate to move back to Guam. I miss the land, my family, and our traditions . I pray for future prosper for us and our people.
Dude is FINE as spam!
To my Chamorro brothers and sisters, you dont need uncle sam. Claim back your true identity, strong warriors. From Philippines.👍
Guam was actually part of the Spanish East Indies, which were governed by Manila. I'd love to see the pacific islands united again.
They have survived hundreds of years before us i think they would survive the problem is they have got into their island so much some may think they depend of them
Akina Speed Stars you have half a the people who lives on guam are Filipinos/Filipinas xD
Nicholas Pereiro you're correct. The other half is from tourist. But lately it's been slowly going down due of them only focusing on the Japanese market
Yeah but we can’t do it ourselves when a lot of our youth are moving stateside
Now we all spamming cuz this guy is perfection 😍
Great piece!
Beautiful people, inside and out. I hope they can grow better food.
Wow I grew up in Guam and moved to the states when I was 10. So interesting to see why spam is such a big part of our diet. Great educational video
that jones act is a killah! here on oahu, hawaii, buying milk from a farmer on a different island is much more expensive than buying milk from the continental U.S. you would think it'd be cheaper. all these U.S territories (american samoa, guam, puerto rico, u.s. virgin islands, U.S mariana islands) and hawaii would benefit a lot if they would get rid of the jones act or at least to amend it. if i order/buy something from japan, they would pass us, go straight to cali and then from cali re-route and come back to us here in hawaii. and we as consumers have to foot the bill for the extra expenses (fuel, crew, etc.) smh. why not come straight here? mind you, the distance from hawaii to cali is about 2500 miles. so about 5000 miles worth of fuel and crew time, extra passed on to consumers. it's one of the main reasons why everything is so expensive here cause 90% of everything we have/need/want, needs to be shipped in. heeelllllppp lol.
One of my best friends was from Guam and goddamn if he wasn't one of the most stand up guys I've ever known. He moved to NYC and while we still do chat online I miss him in person.
That’s crazy, I’m glad they’re trying to reclaim their food/culture
In Rota they used to grow tons of fresh fruit and veg and ship it to Guam. The whole business ended because to few people would buy it.

And it's even more weird than Guam as Guam is still US but Okinawa is Japanese island and yet spam is popular dish unlike elsewhere in Japan.
Saige Kupihea it’s sad 😔
I lived on an island for a couple of years in BWI on the island of Anguilla. It became quickly apparent that no people truly possess freedom if they cant even grow their own food.

Damn Philippines and Guam has the same named like the First name is English and Spanish Surnames...Specially the people and culture..very similar and also the Spam fever in the Philippines..
Keana Besuña Thats due to spanish galleons making guam a port between acapulco mexico and the philippines. so the cultures integrated due to european and filipino mixing .
