Guam has been colonized by the Spanish, occupied by the Japanese and militarized by the Americans. But the history of its indigenous Chamorro people goes back even further. AJ+ went to Guam to speak with indigenous Chamorro people about the island's complicated past.

Growing up Chamorro, I didn't know any of this. Our history was mostly focused on the Japanese occupation, and the rift it caused between the Chamorros in Guam and CNMI. I was raised to be loyal and patriotic, that the United States is the greatest nation on the face of the earth. I even joined the military. When you wake up to all the wrongs perpetrated against your own people, it is easy to be overcome by rage. But, I've had a long education, seen the world, met so many people from different walks of life, and honestly, I see our history as just another example of humanity being trash to its own. I hope that we can right those wrongs without blaming their descendants. I hope that all of us can accept the past, acknowledge those mistakes, correct them, learn from them, and prevent them from happening again. We should be the generation that ends the cycle. We should know better.
You are civilized and pragmatic! Do you have a Facebook account?

I knew nothing about Guam besides it's common colonial history, but after living here for a few years, I can tell you, it is very unfair to the locals that some of their land isn't even accessible to them. I felt that the Chamorros were cheated. Lost their land, language, culture, and about to lose their identity.

When they came to PR tthey did something similar. They traded the Spanish peso for the US dollar to the rate of 2 pesos for each dollar. Then went to Spain and traded it at the rate of 1 for 1. We were impose English, showing the Puerto Rican flag was a criminally punishable act. Seditious conspiracy they called it. We were used to test NBC weapons, sent to wars that had nothing to do with us. Imposed the Jones Act, etc etc etc.

I loved Guam, I was at Andersen AFB from 4/1980 till 5/1981 in the USAF. I met a lot of farmers there as I am from Southwest Virginia and farming was my way of life. I rented cars and drove all over Guam and met a lot of people. The older people were so nice and would give you anything they had. Guam has been shut out by the US Government and still so today. I love Chamorro's and still do today. Great warm folks. Loved Andersen AFB. 62 now, Still farming but will remember Guam as the best place in the world. The nice people, The fun times. @Rocco Flores hell na. Im from PR which is another colony of USA. Thats nothing to be proud of lol
I was not aware about the situation in Guam, but I’m not surprised. The US government basically pulled the same stunt near me with Fort Chaffee in Arkansas. They promised to give the land back to the families they took it from when it was decommissioned and instead turned it over to a couple towns for redevelopment. I worked with one of the descendants of the original landowners and she told me how they were screwed. It’s heartbreaking and sickening.
They should sue
The government or the "White" man?
@@bigbrother9531 I would say both. The landowners were “white” in the Fort Chaffee situation. The land would historically been part of the Osage. There was a Cherokee reservation nearby for a time. All I know there was a town there and the US government paid very little to get the land to build the military base.
The government was going to kick us out of our home in north Georgia citing eminent domain for a highway going to nothing but vacation homes on a couple of lakes years ago. Their highest offer was $25k while property like it was going for at least three times that. The tax assessment for it at that time was $70k. We fought. Had we not, we would've ended up in run down government housing in town and on welfare while a bunch of rich bastards enjoyed their smooth ride over our property to theirs. Tensions got so bad that violence was a real issue. Got so bad they called in extra security to the commission meetings when the project was being discussed. We all pulled together and stopped the project.
As an American I'm appalled. All people living in our terrorities should be considered as full citizen equal to those on the mainland. Lands took away should be returned or compensated at fair price with interest then some.
Furthermore those people should be allowed to determine whether if they'd like to continue the status quo, become a state, or become independent. If they choose independence US should support them and there should be some kind of binding agreement for US to support their independence and invest into their infrastructure and economy or whatever locals decide is in their best interests.
I have no desire to see my country and government to continue exploiting people in terrorities as well as those of the First Nations.

Guam wasn't colonized bythe United States of America, it was colonized by Spain. After nearly 400 years, ownership of the land was transferred to the United States after the Spanish-American war.

While Guam eventually got their birthright citizenship, American Samoa on the other hand is the only US territory where the people are US NATIONALS rather than citizens (because of that same old law regarding the Chamorros). The only way you can be born a citizen there is if your parents are US citizens. Because they're "non-citizen nationals" rather than citizens, they cannot qualify for jobs stateside like firefighters, public school teachers, paramedics, and police officers. They can't run for office either. Sai Timoteo, an American Samoan who was running in 2018 for Hawaii's House of Reps, was disqualified due to the decades-old ruling that has barred American Samoans from public office.
They have tried to fight this. A district court in Utah ruled in favor of the American Samoan community stateside that they should be considered citizens. However, Congress doesn't. Because this decision was appealed by the US federal government at the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver. Even representatives of the American Samoa government itself appealed, because their reasoning is that birthright citizenship would "ruin" the culture. Lots of American Samoans have proudly served in the US military...and yet they're not treated by the government as equals.

Lol, second class citizen. You're living like in colonial era. Don't you know leadership
That's because you don't know any better, you grew up in chains and can't feel them as an adult. If the people of Guam wish to become independent, then they have a right to do so. While states do not have the right to secede, territories do. It has been done in the past. The last territory to do this was Palau, which became an independent republic in 1994. Personally, though, I think that Guam is better of as a territory of the United States. We just exchanged the Japanese occupation for American occupation and at times just as brutal. There was a time that the military required their personnel that left the base to go in groups of three because they would not live. I was asked by a girlfriend's father that worked on the subs why, I told him of attacks by military personnel when I was 6 to the time my family left. Tho I was white I was born on the island and considered local- therefore a target
Living in a us territory is actually kinda fun
Once your born in guam youre instantly an us citizen
We only have 2 seasons rainy and dry
So yeah its fun to live in guam

Chamorros were sent there because they were too dark, had an extra limb, or had a disease before ww2 and was sent off to the philapeans (sorry if i spelled it wrong its hard to write it) some philapeanos have chamorro blood in them
Guam is a former part of the Philippines including Palau island and Solomon island.
Im Filipino American 🇺🇸 but didnt know that Guam was part of the Philippines 🇵🇭 ? Is it during the Ice Age ? Caveman people ?
Agree! I heard it was bought for couple of hundreds of dollars and it's was sequestered and it's a form of payments for freeing from Japanese invaders, but after been liberated from Japanese America forcedly occupied The Philippines and colonized it. The money was pictured American president some are Governor's, but peso domination.with English words.
Yes it's The Philippines islands.
The Guam has Rights to separate from USA since they don't recognize them as a full Citezen of USA.
They had a Rights.
And have them pay for the Rentals for bases. And ask them to moved out from the Island.
Just like Philippines they ask them to abandoned the island Base.
It will be better off if they ásk for Independence.
Not a colonial mentality.
If you ask for Independence from USA they will give it to you. All you need is to ask..

You didn't know any of these stories? Wow - especially as someone of Japanese descent? I was fascinated by the clash of cultures and how it translated onto the battlefield and seas...The atrocities of the cult of Imperial Japan are very well documented.
You are a bigot against People of color I guess.you call an immigrant culture a “Cult”! You must be a racist trump supporter!
Maybe you are right The Japan"s vicious vision of GREATER EAST ASIA CO-PROSPERITY SPHERE! Asia for the Asians including those living in the Pacific region, But if you analysed the Japan's ambition she is like no other than like the same as the most Imperialist country like the USA, they are both an oppressor and liberator, in a relatively different point of view!
But Americans didn’t do a lot better; they evacuated the white population, but left the natives to fend off for themselves.
Guam is part of maharlikan empire
Japan was an empire funded by the UK. They went all over the Pacific, raped and pillaged just like those before them and just like the US empire itself. To this day, you'd be hard pressed to find an elder that's honest enough to tell you what they witnessed, the trauma, the things their family members went through especially the women and children. There's a reason many Pacific islanders, the last couple generations, have lighter hue and slanted eyes. The Japanese emperor himself said, time to make the Pacific asiatic just like him.
Among the territories acquired by Americans from Spain with the TREATY OF PARIS, only The Philippines retaliated so badly to be under control. Hence The Philippine islands is liberated in the mid 1940s. The people of Guam, Puerto Rico and all other US territories just need to assert self-determination no matter what if that is what they want.
The fact is the quality of life would decrease for these countries if they were independent. It would be screwing these people over and abandoning them to suffer.

I served in the US Navy with two men from Guam. Guam should be an independent country ,the American military should pay for the bases and protect Guam.

Why does everyone think Chamorros are Filipino?? We ARE NOT Filipino, We Pacific Islanders, Chamoru Natives of Guam!
@islander 4 Life....Because Guam and The Northern Mariana Islands were once part of The Spanish East Indies which the Spanish created, some people automatically assume were Filipinos, even though we know our own true identity is Native Chamorro (Pacific Islanders)...On youtube I am constantly trying to correct many people who are mislabeling The Native Chamorro Group and The Mariana Islands as Filipinos or part of The Philippines which is a huge error, but some people believe it....Us Native Chamorro's know who we are and where we come from is what matters at the end of the day :)
Who told you that? You are a Pacific Islanders. Its just that majority of people living in guam are Filipinos
All Pacific Islanders are related to Filipinos. Search the Austronesian migration and you'll see
@Miri M....Go further back into Ancient Times and all of humanity is related in one way or another if you believe all people descended from Noah or Adam and Eve...The Pacific Islanders of today have their own Identity,Culture,Language...You cannot go to a Micronesian,Polynesian or Melanesian and tell them their Filipino, because you will get a strange look.
@@sagittariusone2753 But you Chamorros have a separate identity from Polynesians, Melanesians, and even other Micronesians. Pacific Islander is only a geographic label. Just like Asian is only a geographic label. Filipinos arent more closely related to Koreans just because we're both under the label of "Asians" And Chamorros aren't more closely related to Fijians just because they're both under the label of "Pacific Islander" Filipinos & Chamorros are more closely related to each other than they are to any other group. Very good colony. Very good. You better stay loyal, cuz we got 1/4th of your island.
Beautifully said 🤧, the Chamorro culture is very beautiful and strong, Even tho I'm native american I still think of your culture as Americans(but your still a strong culture on your own :D)
No bruh we will never be American. Yes we are proud that they “freed” us. But if you think about it our culture and land were taken away. They treat us different. I’m glad to be apart of this country and I’m proud that they saved us but what I don’t respect is they take our land, they build on sacred grounds. We have not right or sayings to decide what goes on on our land.

So Guam was bought and took from Spain and most of USA citizens don't know what is Guam... It's very sad, how the Spanish language disappeared from Guam and Philippines?
I don't know how Guam lost the Spanish language but here in the Philippines, one reason is actually because the Americans force-feed English language to the local population and banned them from using it. But Spanish was one of our official languages aside from English and Filipino up until the 70's.
You can read the actual Spanish governors' journals from the 1500s to late 1800s online for free. In those, you will discover that the Spanish went to great lengths to keep Filipinos from learning Spanish. However, Filipinos were not deaf or stupid so they picked up many commonly used Spanish words and incorporated them into their languages, albeit many are transformed due to the way they were heard.
Who never heard stories of what the Japanese did during WW2?
Japanese schools don't teach it. And honestly American schools don't either.

The US colony on the East (it includes states in New England, plus Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia others were obtained by Louisiana Purchase to France, declaring war on Mexico and treaties to the British, and most of the times the discrimination of Native American people/Indians)

My husband is from Guam and we live in the US.
This inferior status as a territory was why there was such a strong push for statehood in Hawaii after World War II, which finally happened in 1959. During WWII, Hawaii was run essentially by a military dictatorship from Dec. 1941 to the summer of 1944, under which normal US citizenship rights were suspended under martial law. And just as described here, civilian property was condemned by the military as well. It was paid for, but in some cases it was literally just seized or occupied first. My family too lost a substantial amount of property that was condemned by both US Navy and the US Army in both World War I and then World War II.
Thank you! Never learned about Guam in school. My uncle was stationed there and my cousin was born on Guam. This is noting new to anyone who has traveled across Canada and the USA with eyes wide open. Native North Americans have always been treated as a vanquished race of people. The occupation of Guam by Japan is news to me. Yes we own you a debt of gratitude and a bonus. We can afford it !
The USA intrudes into lands all over the world without the permission of the local people where it then conquers and murders the people for their lands and resources, but like the shady hypocrite that it is it always blames China and Russia for the very crimes and atrocities that it does against other countries on a daily basis!
The Navajo Code Talkers of US Marine Corps helped to defeat the Japanese occupiers of Guam.
I have been three times to Guam. Last one was in 2019 before pandemic. I asked a locals in food court "why are you speak English instead your native language? Be covered by US is really great and safe. They happy to stay as American territory. God bless Guam.

How endearing! Japanese occupation continues in a different, more insidious form - through foreign investments - in the way of land purchases to build Japanese branded golf clubs & resorts which are mainly for Japanese clientele who are completely oblivious to what they did to the island. It should be the Chamorro people who must decide for themselves about their future, be it statehood or sovereignty as an independent nation. With a population of the youth that are able to innovate, they will grow on their own if they choose to be independent. God bless Guam!
Americans are so rigid and conservative in changing things. Why not give these good honest people their citizenships? Give them statehood and ballots, let them have a say in the Capital (ironically, the Capital doesn't have a say for itself), What's the big deal? Oh I see, political demographic consideration and partisan politics.
I served at Anderson in 1976 they used to tell us that the Guamanians were friendly just be back to the base before night. Now it makes perfect sense why I met some Guamanians at night that weren't very happy about my presence. Many cultures have been trashed by America but these people need to be fully compensated ! This this video really needs to be shared by a lot of people.
So sad to hear this. If you can serve in the military but you can't vote it's almost like your a second class citizen.
The people native to Hawaii are going through a similar problem. They are not getting compensated for the land that was taken from them.
At one time African Americans went through a similar situation. They can join the military. Fight and risk their life for someone else's agenda. But they couldn't enjoy the same rights as the ruling class.
And some people wonder why there is such turmoil in this country.
If they leave the island they get to vote. Votes are location based. In exchange for this they pay much less taxes. This is the reason money of them do not actually want to become a state.
Guam is once part of the island nation of the Philippines during the Spanish colonial times. But when USA took over they decided what if the Philippines like independence someday where can we put our ships and army next to it. Well that's Guam alright.
