Man are those owners picky. I done one BLASTED (T-Boned) passenger side. It should have been totaled, but the cost of the car prevented that. Took me a little over 3 months to repair. I live in Michigan (Rust Belt) I hate rust repairs. I am a Chevy guy, My 2003 S-10 extended cab (4.3/.342 gears, auto tranny, 2 whl. drive) is patched with Aluminum duct tape. I love this restoration. Your paint videos are actually some of my favorites. Wear a respirator! I'm a former metalworker and I know what breathing in abrasive disc dust, metal sanding dust, epoxy and bondo sanding dust, and just paint will do to you. I love doing stuff like this on a budget! But spend money on the PPE, it's cheaper than new lungs.

As someone who is a professional body man I appreciate you going over how much time doing something like this actually takes. Most customers don’t have a clue the amount of work it takes and why it cost so much money. Love the channel always excited for new uploads 👍
I love the Rage Gold. Easy to spread and easy sanding. Also, doesn't seem to shrink that much after finishing. Well worth the extra cost. Love your channel. Even my girlfriend who's not really that into cars loves watching and laughs as much as I do. Keep up the excellent content.
I like how this went from "we're just gonna scuff this old paint up so the wrap will stick" - to - "stripped to bare metal, buying and welding in patch panels, bondo and well you know...basically a full restoration" ........this is exactly how my projects go.
Thank you, Derek. It's awesome to see someone think beyond the rust repair. I can't say how many times I've seen body rust repair work by competent builders, just to see them drop the ball on rust prevention. Everyone thinks of the outer panels and inner panels when cleaning rust and welding up patches or panels; that is obvious. But remembering, most panels rust from the inside out, not outside in, is IMPORTANT. ALL BARE METAL CAN RUST (save stainless or non-iron based ones typically). This is ALL the inner and outer supports, braces, brackets, screws, bolts, panels, or related metal surfaces.. These areas should be rust cleaned, treated, repaired/replaced/parched, then if to be welded coded a weld-thru primer (able to handle welding Temps without burning off, a lot do). If the ingredients melting/evaperation point is less than the metal being welded, then what good are they? Hense Weld-Thru Primer, not Weld-Eaporate Away Primer. Then, a regular primer/sealer, touch-up paint, maybe a quality-undercoating, or cavity-wax re-application, as profession body shops and the OEM do. No matter what the point of the project, you or anyone (else in the future) should never need to fix or replace the SAME rusted area as you are now. That is the difference between the overall quality body work you can do vs. scabbed work "the unknowning builder" may do. It does not take much more time to do that prevention; now, you are "already there" anyway. Thanks for remembering to do it most of the time. We love the videos.
Derek you are definitely a "Jack of all Trades"! You guys did amazing work on this old Monte Carlo! Your welding and metal skills are fantastic and the job your brother and friend did, also amazing. I have done plenty of metal work and bondo and paint in my lifetime, so I know how much time it takes to get something right. You guys did fantastic!
Thanks Derek, appreciate helping with the motivation to work on my cars and showing my daughter that working on cars can be fun.......Hi from Tasmania, Australia too 🙂

Is it just me, or do those 70s models look better and better with every year that passes? You can't tell the new plastic bubble cars apart without looking at the emblem, but pre-1980 they each had a unique character. Thanks for bringing this one back to life Derek, great job as always!
Back in the early 90s, there was a muscled up 3rd gen Chevelle parked in front of a house on my route home from a buddy's place in high school. I thought is was so tough. It wasn't until I started looking at '78-83 Malibus that I was exposed to/reacquainted with the colonnade cars again. These cars really are underrated.
I dunno. Some 70's models, but the Monte Carlo was always ungainly in my opinion. Tiny cabin interior too. You would think a massive car would be spacious on the inside, no, not the Monte Carlo. A Volkwagen Beetle felt more roomy.
Love your videos so much. Your Keeping me motivated to finish my camaro I'm doing. Looking forward to one day posably meeting you at a event. Kewp up the good work
You need 3 tube heters for your shop would be way cheaper to operate a heat it and I would gladly take off work to come install them for you if you're interested in that deal
Your videos helped me stay motivated on knocking out my projects. I made a TH-cam as well for working on my Projects and other things. I’m not the greatest with the camera but I try 😂
My buddy and I did a quick scuff and shoot on my 93 C1500 about 5 years ago to make it a custom two tone model. I got asked several times about it. I chose Chrysler Deep Water Blue to go over the stock Light Quasar Blue and was better than any combination Chevy ever did. Last August a fckn mail truck pulled a U turn in front of me and I T-boned him at 35MPH. I went to the hospital by ambulance and my truck was towed to a lot. I was in the hospital - bypass - a couple of weeks later and my truck was auctioned off. I never heard shit from the Postal service to this day, though I have rang their phone off the hook. Time to Lawyer up and collect for a new vehicle.
That overlap and cut trick for the repair panels is a great idea! A knowledgeable extra set of hands sure makes a big difference in progress! Lookin Good!
I am sure all of you have more working knowledge of bodywork than i do. That said i am two years into a rust remove and paint. I am almost there for color. Every other weekend and i am a one man show. Your speed depresses me.
Looks great! Fitzees Fabrications calls that technique the"cut and butt" when you overlap the pieces and cut both pieces at the same time. Can't wait to see it done.
I've always loved the stock cars of this era, it's why I like to run white letter tires and wider tires on the back of my cars....can't tell you how excited I am to see the finished product and the process!! Such a cool idea!!
Derek is better than google! You get the teachings of what when how with the answers and more!!! Across a multitude of platforms, Professionals to hobbyists being able to relate as well as understand his method and experience is after all LEARNING! Thanks Brother!!!
Hey Derick great build and always good advice on how to do the panels. That said, please wear a respirator for painting and at least a mask when sanding. Your family is beautiful and they need you around. I'm 75 and paying for some of my antics in my 40's.
I keep looking at that car and thinking for 70’s it needs purple flake paint with lots of lacquer and chrome spoke wheels - and Kiss blaring out of it!
Looking good! Sure is nice to have friends and family throw their weight into a project with you. Not only can everyone work to their strengths, but it's great to finish a part and look up and see other areas automagically completed. And the last time I tried to daily a car with a spool in the rear I made it a week before I got so sick of chirping, scrubbing and hopping around corners that I ordered an air locker.
Very nice work fellers! My little sister had a 1975 Monte when she was in high school back in 1982. I bought it for her for $800 bucks from a buddy of mine and it was a rust-free car that had just came up north to Ohio from the Carolina's. Man were cars a super bargain back then! This segment brings back a lot of great memories for this old fella watching you guys bring this well-deserved rig back to its former glory and then some! Keep up the great work Derek!
Hi from the UK love watching your channel I think you do a great job saving all the old cars and love the way you take basic steps to eliminate problems to get cars running again. The best thing is you explain what your doing in basic terms making it less complicated and understandable for a normal bloke to understand. Top job bud carry on the good work.
Mr Derek, the monte Carlo is looking great,ya'll put alot of hours into it on such a short time, all in all, when it's all said & done its going to be an awesome car, keep doing what you're doing because we enjoy your videos!!
One thing that I've always loved amd appreciated about Derek is the fact that he has the all around knowledge, everything from little stuff like rebuilding carbs and digical/audio stuff, to big stuff like full on engine builds/rebuilds and body/paint work. A true jack of all trades. An old saying that I've always lived by, and actually just recently learned the full version of is, "a jack of all trades, but master of none is still better than a master of one" which I believe to be very true of alot of us, but especially Derek. Keep it up brother, and we all look forward to the next one!!!
Panel beater here. Been using that rage gold bog for what feels like forever now. Nothing beats it. I’ve used it from insurance jobs on cars to full restorations and refreshing cement semis to now excavators and cranes. 👍👍
I love this project. 1974 Monte Carlo, and a 1972 Ford Galaxy 500 are the cars I learned to drive in. I was 13....lol. I had such a cool uncle. I hope to get one some day and restore it completely.
I really love it when I see the big VGG. He's the one and only, that makes the car guy, of car guys. I just really enjoy your yutube videos. Thanks for the entertainment, Dereck.
Your an extremally talented guy. I have been painting for about 40 years, and you give great information, sealer would have helped alot to cover the bondo . Enjoy the videos
I’m a Velva Granville inhabitant and somehow I had never heard of you till last week! Watched nearly all your videos since then Wish I would have known ya when you lived in my neck of the woods you’re the kind of feller a guy likes to know!
Heck yes what a great great Wednesday! I was just clicking on you tube notifications and bam here’s Derek! Can’t wait love the best channel on you tube !
This car was so deserving of some love and to be enjoyed again , I always like the Monte Carlo and the Buick Riviera , just liked those body lines . I was just a kid and a family friend come home from the Navy driving a 1973 Monte Carlo the same pretty blue that yours was at one time and I instantly liked those cars , their just simply beautiful .
This project is awesome! I can't wait to see it finished. I love these Monte Carlos. You guys did a lot of work on this one in a short amount of time. Way to go. This is an amazing video too. Keep it up and good luck getting this one finished in time. I think this is going to be a great car when you get it together.
I cannot tell you how much I enjoy these resto vidyas. I had to let my own classic car go in the past when it had too much rust. I felt really aggrieved at the time that I just didn't know enough to be able to repair on it myself and it just had to be condemned. 🥺
I'm loving this build. I have a 1974 Monte Carlo as well. It's great to see a big TH-cam channel like VGG giving love and attention to these long forgotten cars.
Great Job, Fellers! I can’t wait to see the wrap process. Whether yer doing a full wrap or just a rear window on a pickup, it’s a process that takes a lot of patience.
I remember when I was a kid I used to pedal my stingray bike to the local Chevy dealer and dream. The first time I saw a '73 Monte I thought it was the ugliest thing I'd ever seen. It didn't take long before I grew to love them and still do!
Looks great Derick. Reminds of my high school days. I did completes on 5 or 7 cars and trucks during that time. My dad was a body and paint man so I did it all from the age of 7. Doing awesome, keep it up.
Derek thank you for draggin us along on this ol gals journey. Man she looks slick with just that matte flat primer!!! Can't wait to see the end result with the wrap on there. Its already in the bleepbloops but I gotta tell ya you're gettin really good with your metalwork, and that fuelfiller rig is gonna shine, also, and it reminded me of RMRW when ya adapted that drain cover into a screen for that turbski!!! Man that foxbody was something out of a Mad Max movie, whaddnt it? Later!!! I also think its great that so many people are chiming in concerned about you wearing PPE while handling the primer, filler, etc. especially sanding. Please be safe, Man. We'd be sad without ya.
I had a 76 Monte with t tops as my school car. It had plenty of weight reduction. My dad and my brother rebuilt her using all old parts cars. This is an awesome project!
Enjoyed that alot, nice job on all those patches it's in great shape for the age . Sweet ride can't wait for the next video, don't make us wait to long thanks Dale
Absolutely brilliant work as always, also envious of the incredible availability of your older vehicles, Australians sadly sent a whole lot of ours to the crushers to come back as new shiny computer controlled crap, our "vintage" car market is completely unfathomable. Projects begin at the several thousand mark and parts are few and far between. Be good ,have fun
Another option for a homegrown water separator that we have done. Come out of the tank with an extra 50 footer of hose, drop that in a cooler or #5 wash tube with ice water in it, then go into your water separator and shoot that out to your spray gun.
Great job so far on it, loving the progress, just one thing please wear a respirator when you're sanding bondo/ painting we want you and your friends here as long as possible!
Hi Vice grip garage. Been watching your territorials on renovations start-ups and other XYZ , very enjoyable great laugh. Remind me of me when I was in my late teens early 20s I restored and rebuilt a few minis a vehicle called a Hillman avenger and I add a Pontiac Parisienne With stacked headlights and a 283in.³ Chevy, with a four barrel Holly carburettor on it . I rebuilt the top end hence the holly gone on top. Side header mufflers That was for pipes that actually came out just in front of the rear wheels. From what I can remember approximately four months to do the bodywork as I was only doing the evenings and weekends. Metalflake red with silver stripe going down the side and up over the top. And because of the Holly carburettor And ram scoop air intake on top, large hole in the bonnet with a scoop billet aluminium with fins ha ha. As you can probably gather it sounded good and look good as well, Me English gentleman ha ha now retired living in France. There’s only one thing I’m concerned that you don’t seem to wear respirators or any kind of filters whilst you’re sanding and spraying this will affect your health in later date. A few years ago I lost a friend but I knew for a few years he was working with MDF sand in it cutting it to make moulds and jigs for a company that ended up giving him bad health as you can imagine. So please stay safe because I’d like to carry on watching your territorials on renovation and start-ups of your latest fines. Throw in that skunk juice , and come on bring on the thunder, smoking , and get rid of those mosquitoes. Stay and play safe. Phil from the moulin in France
Just to let you know Derek! I have been welding for over 30 years. Some low cost machines that are fantastic are Primeweld. So cheap with fantastic service and their duty cycle is amazing. Just thought i would put that out there. I am not sponsored just love them. Keep up the great work.
Not using a flanging tool on those long seams adds a ton more stress and work. The flange will resist warpage and give the weld a place to sit so you won’t have to grind it out nearly as much. It also gives some wiggle room for the panel.
I cannot wait to see how this turns out! I love the '73-'77 body style Monte Carlo! I noticed the white paint in the door jams. So, does that mean you're painting it a Darrel Waltrip #88 "Gatorade" tribute car or is it going to be just a blank white paint job?
You Fellas Are Amazing. Such Determination Is Inspiring Me To Watch The Next Vidja, And The One After That, And Then The Next One… You Get It. Hands Down A Night And Day Transformation Of That Sweet Rig. Catch You On The Next One, Keep It Safe Out There Gentlemen!
Really enjoyed this one back in the day, y’all should do more restorations. Would be amazing to be able to in the future watch a recovery all the way through to a fully restored car and even the sale to a new fella if that’s what you decided to do. What a great way to save a car permanently
BOOM part 2 already! Thanks guys, really loving this build. Without even realizing it ,a feller picks up all kinds of tricks by watching. Shawn's lungs should have a nice coat of filler in em by now, that's factree
I love your channel and you never cease to amaze me. But this?! Pure inspiration. I had a 79 Monty project car as a kid and had loads of fun with it but never got around to body work and the Wisconsin winter finally ate it for breakfast. A fellah might take on a rig rescue after seeing this
Hey Derek you can get a 40' radiant tube heater for your ceiling and it would keep your garage amazingly warm. You can set them from 40 degrees to 100. Plus there is not air movement. You and a buddy could install one in a weekend.
My dad graduated 76..he bought a 77 Monte and then a 79 brand new both had t-tops. Wish I had the 77..it was silver and the 79 was like dark red or something...have a soft spot for the Montes.
As usual great video just one remark I don’t know about in the USA but here in Europe filler/bondo has the same hardener as two pack paint ie isocyanate based. It is mega harmful to you and an cause cancer. Please use proper masks when sanding for your own safety. That includes when sanding paints. It will bite you in the ass Stay safe ✌️ Just got to the end and saw you guy’s spraying epoxy without masks 😱 Please be safe Derek and use proper ppe !
I think the isocyanates evaporate when curing so the sanding dust doesn't have that risk, but it's definitely has some other risk a guy doesn't want. Spraying without masks 😔
Remember what is bad/causes cancer in the EU doesn't in the USA excluding CA. Just those lawyers in the EU love writing danger tags on everything including water! Since this work was done in the USA he was perfectly safe. Crazy right?
Poly Isocyanates are not chemically far off from Cyanide's when atomized if I am remembering my chemistry correctly. Used to work on boats (glass work) and some of the guys who sprayed a lot outside without the proper equipment sounded like they were talking through gravel. Spend the money on at least a certified respirator or even better, you are in a shop, get a positive pressure suit. Love your videos and want to keep enjoying them.
I love what you do (I have a '63 Catalina), but watching you spraying without at least a half-mask just kills me. I painted cars and semi's back in the early 80's - and too many times without a respirator. I promise the caugh you're getting will get A LOT worse in years to come if you're not careful about what you're sucking in.
I've worked in a coal mine for the last 20 years. I've always been careful about dust. Wearing a mask when I needed to. Water roads. Making sure dust controls work on my equipment. My lungs are 100% clear. My buddy I started with has first stage of silicosis at 45. Take care of your lungs and they'll take care of you
Love the vehicle! My Dad had multiples of the Monte Carlo. My Dad also owned a 1973 Pontiac LeMans which became one of my favorites. Now, I own a 1972 Chevelle Malibu it's a 4 door but it's my four door.. aka the sleepers. Keep up the good work.
Derek...how about putting some 1 - 1 1/2 inch, black, flat metal strips with rivet heads showing on them all the way around the front windshield and back window where the factory trim was to really get that 70's NASCAR plexiglass windshield/rear window look? And if I were going for the NASCAR LOOK, I would also add three black 3/8" aluminum or steel tubing vertical "windscreen supports" top to bottom on the inside of the front and back windscreens to make them truly LOOK like they are plexiglass, and I would put the frame and window net on the drinker's side too. All of those are cheap, easy, mock-up touches that would really be a CONVINCING part of your tribute "makeup job" on the ol' girl...they would really SELL IT from 10 feet away, whether it was moving or sitting still. ;)
VGG always makes the day that much better!!

I dunno. Some 70's models, but the Monte Carlo was always ungainly in my opinion. Tiny cabin interior too. You would think a massive car would be spacious on the inside, no, not the Monte Carlo. A Volkwagen Beetle felt more roomy.
@@EV-wp1fj you never drove a 70's Monte Carlo with a comment like that.
I had a 76 Monte Carlo it was very roomy
Love your videos so much. Your Keeping me motivated to finish my camaro I'm doing. Looking forward to one day posably meeting you at a event. Kewp up the good work
Awesome glad to hear
You need 3 tube heters for your shop would be way cheaper to operate a heat it and I would gladly take off work to come install them for you if you're interested in that deal
Your videos helped me stay motivated on knocking out my projects. I made a TH-cam as well for working on my Projects and other things. I’m not the greatest with the camera but I try 😂
Nice work! I can't believe how this "quick scuff and shoot" project is turning out. Well done sirs. Looks good
thank you
My buddy and I did a quick scuff and shoot on my 93 C1500 about 5 years ago to make it a custom two tone model.
Just love the lines on the Monte. It's such a muscular looking car, with those wide wheel well flares. Enjoying this build a-lot
It's funny, I remember when those cars came out, I didn't like the body lines. Now I think they are fantastic.
@@1984xlx I think it has to do with looking at nothing but generic plastic blah vehicles for the last 3 decades.
Thanks again VGG, you guy’s make my evenings great. Can’t wait to see the next chapter …
Lookin' good fellers!
I'm really impressed
with the amount of
progress you've made
so far & I hope you end
up happy with the final
results.
Thank you David
Awesome content! This is the stuff that makes these old unit cool again. Those 70s lines are awesome.
They sure are good lookin'!
Amazing work Derek. You’ve made my week having another episode before Friday. Take care
thank you Darren
Awesome and amazing job guys! Thats some long hours and hard work squeezed into such a short time. Great work. Keep it going!👍👏👏
Thank you! Will do!
Beautiful car. Love these Montes. Glad to see this one getting some attention
I'm doing this right now on my 1980 Chevy Luv so this has helped me out on fixing the same things. Thanks Derek for everything a fella does!!👍👍
this is excellent; loving the technical content! But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE wear respirators when working with catalyzed stuff :/
I'm very surprised at the lack of comments about that. The filler dust alone, but when he was spraying with no PPE, not good at all!!
Awesome! I’m definitely following this build! 👍🏽👌🏽🇺🇸
Very cool !
I really love it when I see the big VGG. He's the one and only, that makes the car guy, of car guys. I just really enjoy your yutube videos. Thanks for the entertainment, Dereck.
you bet, thanks for watching
Your an extremally talented guy. I have been painting for about 40 years, and you give great information, sealer would have helped alot to cover the bondo . Enjoy the videos
I’m a Velva Granville inhabitant and somehow I had never heard of you till last week! Watched nearly all your videos since then
Wish I would have known ya when you lived in my neck of the woods you’re the kind of feller a guy likes to know!
self tappers lol your a true craftsman...
Heck yes what a great great Wednesday! I was just clicking on you tube notifications and bam here’s Derek! Can’t wait love the best channel on you tube !
Same here ! Hallelujah!

@@keithharden7844 Hot damn! Luv me some Puddin! He's knocking that suspension out on the Lil truck.
@@Daddyrabbit_2 yes he is. Gonna earn back that Datsun king title
Nothing better than good friends and a awesome project.
Definitely love the channel Derek. You’re a huge inspiration for many people. Never change!
It's great to see a big TH-cam channel like VGG giving love and attention to these long forgotten cars.
i have recently just bought one, do you have anything i should look out for?
Looks great! You all have put in a ton of work in a mind blowing short period of time and it looks amazing! Great job!
Nice to see you get help from your brother and buddy there. It's always nicer to have help. Good job. Looks great.
Another option for a homegrown water separator that we have done. Come out of the tank with an extra 50 footer of hose, drop that in a cooler or #5 wash tube with ice water in it, then go into your water separator and shoot that out to your spray gun.
Having Derek quote Letterkenny makes this episode incredibly awesome !! Loving the Monte build.
I've seen him do the "To be fair" thing a couple times, but that one was much more direct.
Just learned quarantined for a week, and here's Derek! Think I'll re-watch everything.
As you can probably gather it sounded good and look good as well,
Me English gentleman ha ha now retired living in France.
This is quickly becoming one of my favorite builds! It is going to be an awesome kit. Plus a Letterkenny reference to boot!
He could be a letterkenny character. He is like a combo of all 3 main characters.
Absolutely brilliant video, unbelievable amount of work you’ve done in such a short time. The car looks great! Cannot wait to see how she turns out.
I love when a guy posts, makes my day.
Not using a flanging tool on those long seams adds a ton more stress and work. The flange will resist warpage and give the weld a place to sit so you won’t have to grind it out nearly as much. It also gives some wiggle room for the panel.
Looking great Derek 👍
The monte looks great, man! We can always count on a guy to bring the classics right back around!
Great job everyone!
I was surprised you had a roof leak. The building looks like new construction.
Yup .. definitely time for a new roof.
I was surprised they didn't stretch a tarp across the top of the lift.
Flex Seal!
Minimal rot, very nice lines and definitely a keeper. Y'all did a good job.
My day is not complete until i watch a vice grip garage video 🤘🏼
I love your channel and you never cease to amaze me. But this?! Pure inspiration. I had a 79 Monty project car as a kid and had loads of fun with it but never got around to body work and the Wisconsin winter finally ate it for breakfast. A fellah might take on a rig rescue after seeing this
Hey Derek you can get a 40' radiant tube heater for your ceiling and it would keep your garage amazingly warm. You can set them from 40 degrees to 100. Plus there is not air movement. You and a buddy could install one in a weekend.
Mint. Just mint. Love it. Derek, a fella and his friends’ hard graft is paying off. Can hardly wait for Part 3 😎🤟🏼
🇦🇺👍
Love this channel just wished the boy happy birthday to him stay safe godbless keep bringing the thunder ⛈
Really enjoy the vgg content keep up the terrific work
Thank you Nigel
A body and paint guy I helped out a time ago said you can only see one side a time.
My dad graduated 76..he bought a 77 Monte and then a 79 brand new both had t-tops. Wish I had the 77..it was silver and the 79 was like dark red or something...have a soft spot for the Montes.
Great to have part 2 to this already!
I'm thrashin' !
As usual great video just one remark
I don’t know about in the USA but here in Europe filler/bondo has the same hardener as two pack paint ie isocyanate based.
It is mega harmful to you and an cause cancer. Please use proper masks when sanding for your own safety. That includes when sanding paints. It will bite you in the ass
Stay safe ✌️
Just got to the end and saw you guy’s spraying epoxy without masks 😱
Please be safe Derek and use proper ppe !
I think the isocyanates evaporate when curing so the sanding dust doesn't have that risk, but it's definitely has some other risk a guy doesn't want. Spraying without masks 😔
Hard headed 'merican tuff guy antics. Not gonna be fun being hospitalized all the time later in life with lung problems
@@sailorman263 agree dude
All of those are cheap, easy, mock-up touches that would really be a CONVINCING part of your tribute "makeup job" on the ol' girl...they would really SELL IT from 10 feet away, whether it was moving or sitting still. ;)
