It's mind bottling. You're not going to believe this, but my phone actually came up with bottling before I finished typing "mind"! Now my head is about to explode!
Derek we absolutely love watching you do anything with cars or anything. Don't ever apologize for your videos, we are blessed to be able to go along with you guys for your journey. Also I wanted to thank you for thinking about the future and doing it the right way so you or someone else could put it back to stock because those cars are hard to find and even though I like some other shows you are the only one I see that actually cares about the history of your cars.
For an old guy like me, thank you for your videos cause we can't afford cable. And Wow how we car lovers ( Older Cars ) really enjoy seeing these grave gems come alive. Just proves that they were once built to last and not built out of plastic.
You are one in a million Derek. Many car shop channels out there but you put yours together from simple beginnings in your home garage (with blessings from the family of course). Others are obviously just kids with lots of dad's money to play games with. Anyone can just replace parts with Chinese flea-bay knockoffs to get an engine running, but it takes experience and mechanical know-how to do it the way you do with explanation to boot.. A real American.
HELP ME UNDERSTAND how a guy finds the time with a build and a timeline like this to not only film, but edit and upload the content. We love ya Derek, and of course the rest of the family because we know you couldn't do it without their support too. Can't wait to see it done!
Derek, you amaze me every time I watch one of your videos. I am an old car guy having started working for a Chevrolet dealer in 1964. All of the cars you are working on are ones I grew up working on as new cars and I am so glad you are doing your best to bring these cars back to life. THANK YOU !!!!
I love this and I do NOT want to wait for part II. Someone, PLEASE help me. A feller would watch this any day of the week but this Friday night drop is hittin' this guy strong. Keep it up!!
I’ve been putting off doing exactly what your doing with the rust repair on my truck. But now I think it’s time to get after it. Thanks for the motivation and confidence do it.
Derek, you don’t need any accolades from a complete stranger but you represent what is great about real America. Hard-working and down to earth. Thanks for the entertainment and education. God bless.
When I was 14 my oldest cousin turned 16, and our grandpa gave him his 1977 Monte Carlo as a birthday present. It didn’t run obviously and had mushrooms growing in the trunk (northwest Washington) but we were over the moon and had it running in a few days. It was baby blue with a white vynal top. White interior of the finest pleather with swivel bucket seats!!! Man we had a time in that car! I can’t even hear the name without smiling.
God Bless your friend Chad for being such a team player and helper. Got the toughest job to do but did it great. Thank you again Derek, your videos are the best.
When removing stubborn paint, never forget about the the option of aircraft paint stripper, saves a ton of time and easy to use! Keep up the hilarious videos!
TN cracks me up with snow. I moved here from PA and snow wasn't a big deal. We move here and they call for snow and close down schools lol. I have my battery set up the same way in my truck. All the aftermarket stuff is hooked to side posts. It does make it a lot nicer
Thanks for the tips on installing patch panels! I’ve got a parts truck in my yard that I think I’m going to cut up and repair for some practice before starting on the car I actually care about
Because of you I took on salvaging a 1991 k1500 that was headed to the junkyard and I have rebuilt the motor and went through everything mechanically and I am starting on the interior and exterior now. Thank you for the inspiration and introducing me to something that I now love to do and will continue to do after I finish this truck I will be moving on to something else! Thank you for the videos and all the knowledge. You and your family are more to people than just a show you are role models and inspire people with what you do!
Quickly becoming my favourite YT channel, spent almost 15hours straight last weekend watching video after video, really enjoy what you do and how you explain things. Looking forward to see how this build turns out.
I watch these videos for 1) entertainment, 2) education, and 3) motivation. Each video manages to provide each of these and more. Keeping me motivated on my project truck but also reinforcing the fact it doesn't have to be perfect to be appreciated and on the road.
Derek you are definitely one of my fav You Tube channels. I had a body shop for 20 years. Started out with rustorations, and then it became the largest shop in Western Delco with 11 full time. The point I wanted to get to was that I started doing 55-57 TBird restorations. I did the body end of thngs, and the company out of Exton did the rest. They were frame up. Couldn't tell it wasn't a brand new car when done. Okay, okay let me get to the simple point. In order to remove paint from a car the secret which equals very little work, and great results is to buy about 4 gallons of a good paint stripper. Mask off all of the seams around door, trunk, hood edges and don't purposely put stripper on the tape. Bury the car in stripper. Make it soaking wet. Walk away and let the stripper do all of the work. You can even use a plastic squeegee to remove the paint. Don't do any scraping; that's work. Put on another super wet coat. Let it sit. You'll know when it is time to remove it. You'll find the end result is totally bare metal. Clean it all off and then remove the tape from the door etc. seams, and use a DA with 80 grit and take that little rim of paint that was under the tape off. Bingo. Don't worry about using 80 grit because this is metal which resists the sand paper from digging in. Next up you want to use metal etch liquid on the paint. All car manufaturer "pickle" the metal with acid so it will accept the paint, and also it dissolves the little tiny seeds of rust that are now all over the metal since those metal sandng dust particles are so sensitive to moisture that even the humidity in the air will turn them into seeds of rust. Cover it with primer and skip the acid treatment, and with a year or two you will have peeling paint, with a skim of rust on the metal. Use the acid and you can leave the metal hanging on a wall without any primer or paint and it won't rust. This comment is getting kind of long, and I have something else to share with you about all of this, so I will start a new comment.
What I am talking about here is doing up a car like you saw in the car show you just went to. Mind blowing quality, and thanks to these tips, it's not out of reach to do one. Sandblasting makes all of the difference. I saw that look in your eye when you got done seeing those cars. Love your channel just the way it is though. Your no holes barred approach to things encourages people in a positive way. Your incredible amount of knowledge helps too. :-)
Best friend had one of these complete with New York State rust. Tommy loved it . Handicap controls for gas and brake, it would move good . It had a 350 in it. The hood was like 50 feet long .Rest in peace Tommy. Gone but never forgotten.
You got to make some covers for the headlights so when you're sitting at a track you can cover them and make it look more NASCAR authentic. This is going to be a cool project !!!
I don't have one, but I've seen videos. The Eastwood CONTOUR SCT Surface Conditioning Tool could make quick work of the paint on the sides. Love your channel sir! Always fun!
We had a '77 Monte Carlo growing up. Maroon with white interior. It was a sweet land yacht. I've had a few Monte Carlos as an adult. Too bad they stopped making them.
Fantastic job. I recently lost a son and I can't tell you how wise you are for including your family and friends on your various projects. Love your channel!
Now l'm the guy all the way over in England, talking to my buddies about sparkolators, fuel make-it-happeners and lightnin whirlers! Thank you Derek for your Zen-like approach to old car problems. Whenever l face a challenge, l say to myself "now what would Derek do?" Perfect! 😍
Might want to build an outdoor attached enclosure for the air compressor. Insulate with batts to absorb as much sound as possible. Or even those fancy grey recording studio pyramid panels.
I love this era Monte Carlo. There are a father and son who both race these on Saturday nights in the Pure Stock Division at my local dirt track! This is great!
I am a new viewer that has absolutely fallen in love with a dang youtube channel.. came over when Cleetus put Derek in a Crown Vic months ago and cannot get enough of this channel.
I love this! I have a '51 Plymouth Concord that I'm planning to paint up as a tribute "Lee Petty Special" from the 1951 NASCAR season. Under the hood won't exactly be conventional but it should be much better at recycling tires than the stock flattie. These videos keep inspiring me to turn wrenches so thank you and keep up the good work!
You're finally somebody that cares about old cars and cares about things to do with him it's really cool that you bring your boys along and your family. Keep up the good work might teach a little more safety around the kids and tell him safety First thumbs up every time I watch you
My friend had this exact ‘74 Monte…I remember helping him cut some of those same rusted panel sections off. Can’t wait to see this one brought around and wrapped!
Awesome build, this is going to be a fantastic series - those valve covers are sweet perfection for this project, hats off to the fan that sent them to Derek 👍
when welding small holes try putting copper behind and weld up holes as the weld wont stick to the copper, this method can be used for larger holes as well
Definitely a different type of video, but great content! Between the humor and the info on the process it was, once again, great to watch. I agree with Bradley, don't ever apologize for your videos. Welcome to Tn, we're glad to have you here...
Hey Doug, I was scrolling through comments and respect yours, but just wondering why you would disrespect our flag 🇺🇸 by showing it in your profile pic upside down
Mr. VGG, thanks for sharing your mechanical knowledge and content. Helps a very old wrencher like me live the past days vicariously. Cheers & go, go USA from an old Vietnam Vet!
It's another cool VGG rig, looking forward to seeing it completed and the glorious burnouts and whatever else you decide to do with er!! Another enjoyable vgg video in the record books...check!
Putting those pieces in random orders is a great idea. I wish my beanie and "one in a million" shirt came with one. I would tack it to my toy box. Great video as always!
Awesome. I learned to drive on our '73 Monte Carlo. 350 4bbl. Engine was bulletproof. Didn't need more than regular maintenance the entire time our family owned it.
Thanks for all the great videos over the years especially the ones with unlocking a seized motor definitely helping with my 1964 olds cutlass 400 big block👍🇺🇸
I once went to a boneyard and grabbed 4 hoods... with odd shapes & differing profiles. I used those hoods for replacement panels pieces.... cause sometimes... the curves and the lips abd the straight body lines already in place.... it were just helpful! Another neat tool I found kinda fun to use was an air driven panel flanger tool (had a hole poker in it too!). Makes for quick and more permanent fixes too. Always fun to watch Derek,
Thank you Derek once again for taking the time to show us your projects, you are a frikken gem man and I am excited for the Monte! I have learned so much from you over the years (this is coming from a fairly handy humble person); I haven't splashed any molten metal before, probably near too old and decrepit anyhoo, but I figure with what I've learned over the years from you and a few other of my favorite car folks here on YT, I could probably stick two pieces of metal together with okay results: This is a wonderful way to learn things and so very appreciated by my friends and me in these weird times, at least a guy can sort of think to himself he did something productive during the day by maybe remembering something... something like that. :) Cheers from Canada, the western ocean side, stay safe and smert and healthy!
YES, this is awesome! I had a 76' Monte I raced for 5 years in the Factory Stock Division on dirt. Wish I could race it again. That thing drove like a Cadillac. When we needed a new body, we cut the rear 1/4ers and roof off in 1 piece, wasn't to bad of a job actually. Can't wait to see it finished!
Green flywheel cover is an aftermarket item from The Connection now owned by Dorman. I used to sell a bunch of them years ago in my new and used auto parts business.
The ole’ Monte is my favorite old school NASCAR rig. Enjoyed the video. The whole time I watched my brainolator kept tickling me with a distant memory of a distant memory of a model kit or a matchbox car I had of a race car Monte Carlo from childhood. It’ll come to me at about 3:00 in the morning. Can’t wait to see the finished product.
This car reminds me of a combination of my dad's old 1975 Black Monte Carlo with a 350, and his 1976 Brown Monte Carlo with a 400. These cars were tanks.
I just said in a comment; Best Styled Body in a Full Sized CHEVY EVER ! & I mean it ! I'm Pretty Sure Dale Earnhardt Rocked out in a 74 Monte-Carlo Body Style Back in the Day when I was 3 yrs Out of 6 yrs of College !
I wonder how many thousands & thousands of those old Montes have been made into stock cars & raced on the local speedways in the 80s???? They made great figure 8 cars. I've built & raced several years ago. Great old cars great old memories.
Great start, Derek! Can't wait to see more. Thank you for inspiring me to tackle some rust holes that formed on my 72 Chevelle where the vinyl top meets the trim. Just gotta be patient and not rush it. Air quench sounds like a key part in the tack welding. Thanks again!
I love the reaction on friends face and casual laugh at when you guys finish the build talk in beginning. Nothing better than fellas getting together to turn wrenches.
This is the perfect car to do this to. Like everyone else that has said, you don't need to apologize, this takes a lot of time and effort. Add in the fact you only have 6 days, editing, shooting, plus the all important family time, it's a huge undertaking. But we will all be here to watch. You make THE best videos on TH-cam! Thank you Derek, part two will be epic no matter what!
Really like these kind of builds. You never have to apologize for anything Derek, Its always great to watch a master at work no matter the build or situations. Keep on Trucking.
Incredible amount of work, Derek! This project has my interest but I really want to see this wrap installation. Don't forget to take time for a cold snack or two! Cheers bud 🍻
Love the Vice Grip Garage. Us old time wrench turners can do most any damn thing with a pair of vice grips. I actually have about six different sizes of them in my tool box right now.
Hey, Derek! Love watching all this stuff get done...it's very satisfying, and it inspires me to work on my rig! Big fan of the 400sb, that was the barkin unit in one of the first vehicles i drove as a kid, my dad's 79 scottsdale k20. Had a granny 4 speed too. I Ioved that truck....it ran like a scolded dog and it'd pull a house down.
Reminds me that I had a 1988 T bird Turbo Coupe loved Bill Elliott you got me interested in NASCAR so I later worked for Roush Racing as a rear end gear builder. Car you're working on worked on a many of them
I had the same model car. Bought it for 100 dollars and sold it for 200. I'm missing it now. Kicking myself in the butt everyday. Didn't know what I had. Was in a little better condition. Love your videos . Can't wait to see it done 👍
Who else’s vocabulary has been changed drastically by watching VGG? I need to know I’m not alone.
I’ll be dipped!
It's mind bottling. You're not going to believe this, but my phone actually came up with bottling before I finished typing "mind"!
Now my head is about to explode!
I have adapted: AGGAHH-PSSST when I'm sniping' out a tough part. It's much more satisfying than, GET OUT OF THERE YOU LITTLE DEVIL.

Rebuild the inside what app. Do you find the cars
True very true... don't ever apologize
Love this idea. I am still struggling what route to take with another NASCAR favorite. My 76 Laguna also with a 400sbc.
Best way to start a Friday night….With a fresh VGG episode!
Agreed 👍It's like watching you dukes of Hazzard when we were kids. And I got my cold snacks 😋
Yep !
Don`t forget the cold refreshments!!

Keep another radiator handy. My cold case radiator lasted 3 weeks before a massive failure at the core and tank. Love the build!
Finally, he's back with greatness lol.... freaking love this channel.

What!!!! That is sick!! I’ve always wanted a tribute stock car to Richard petty. This will be a great video
Had one of those in the 1970s red with tan vinyl roof. Those doors were so heavy. The captain's car was cool on the car.
Derek’s handwriting is the most under appreciated part of the channel. A guy moves his hand and script comes out.

Bud, I’m loving this! Can’t wait till I get some time to do the same stuff to my builds! Love your content always!
Thanks for all the great videos over the years especially the ones with unlocking a seized motor definitely helping with my 1964 olds cutlass 400 big block👍🇺🇸
Use Your buffer with a 80 grit 9" round Velcro sand paper . It works great for quick stripping.
Cheers from Canada, the western ocean side, stay safe and smert and healthy!
Derek you are a national treasure, I love the content. Best car channel out there!
@WHATSAPP ➊➌➌➊➋➏⓿➌➌➍➐ no thank you
I am so glad to hear someone else use the word worser. I thought I was the only one ..thanks for making it real!!..
Love you channel
My favorite car, back in the day. Always loved the Monte Carlo styling.
This is awesome! Great job Derek and Chad! Iam in Efland NC and I am so glad you moved closer to me, can't wait for some get togethers!
Those O’Reilly Ads with Derek are Gold! 🔥
I wonder how many thousands & thousands of those old Montes have been made into stock cars & raced on the local speedways in the 80s????
They made great figure 8 cars.
I've built & raced several years ago.
Great old cars great old memories.
I'd like to know if Derek still has the 59 or 60
El Camino for sale
Great start, Derek! Can't wait to see more. Thank you for inspiring me to tackle some rust holes that formed on my 72 Chevelle where the vinyl top meets the trim. Just gotta be patient and not rush it. Air quench sounds like a key part in the tack welding. Thanks again!
LOVE the Monte carlo
Getting more and more murica In here lol 🤣

A car I wanted when l was 16. Still never owned one. And now I'm 60.
I used to have one my father rebuilt, gave it to me when I turned 16. Loved it. Would do anything to get another one.
I love the reaction on friends face and casual laugh at when you guys finish the build talk in beginning. Nothing better than fellas getting together to turn wrenches.
Agreed
I wouldn't be without a pair of vice grips. I grew up with them as well - and there are so many things they can do!
Love your videos
. Can't wait to see it done 👍
Guess a guy can go ahead and like this IMMEDIATELY….👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
I love this car already with the supercharger and all. This is next level! Well done
