"Don't do SHIT... you don't know how to do!" Applicable to nearly every outlaw mud show out there nowadays and even some of the bigger promotions on occasion.
It's one thing to impersonate the voice. Jim Cornette picked up perfectly on Dusty's cadences and inflections and tone as well especially as he showed different emotions. That is a work of true comic genius!B.W.
It's funny, I was just commenting above that when I hear Cornys great Dusty impression I also hear the late Mitch Hedberg, the same rhythm and cadence, the use of pausing. It takes great comedic skill to do it so well like Corny, I wouldn't be surprised that Hedberg was a fan in his youth.

Dusty was over huge in damn near 90% of the country. Over huge as a heel in the AWA which was like 70-80% of the mid-west. And over huge as a face in the NWA which was about the rest of the country except the north east.
He had the best gimmick in the world. Himself. It wasn't a gimmick. It was him. The genuine loving human being. And the most charismatic man in wrestling.
I often wondered if Dusty was accepted by most of the black wrestling fans back then, or if they thought his preacher-like manner of speaking might have been interpreted as a mocking, borderline racist imitation. (And it was not, btw. At least history is right on that point.) My black friends in school didn’t follow wrestling at all or know Dusty.
@@Mind-Over-Body Lol We accepted him too. Both my mom and dad loved him. “Don’t talk about the challenger kid” at 2:45 is one of the most hilarious things I’ve ever heard because of the quote itself, and the fact that Cornette’s impression of him is spot on

Know what is funny about that? All Wee Willie had to do was his job and be good at it. He’d had a different name and different respect. Dusty treated job guys well and appreciated them. Some even got longer matches later on.
“I know I do not look like the athlete supposed to look. My belly may a a little big…..my hinny may be a little big, but I’m bad and they know I’m bad.” The American Dream Dusty Rhodes
I remember "Learning the Ropes." It was an 80's sitcom where Lyle Alzado, a legendary football star, played a high-school teacher who moonlighted as a wrestler called the Masked Maniac. And actual NWA wrestlers appeared on the show, like Arn Anderson, the Road Warriors, and Stan Lane. BTW, the actor who played his teenage son, whose name is Yannick Bisson, is now a huge star on CBC, starring in "Murdoch Mysteries."
And this is for Jim. Why didn't you ever do stand up. I mean you come up with stuff right off the top of your head in a matter of seconds out of a reaction. Truly one of the geniuses of the business.
My favorite memory of the Dream was growing up in Clearwater, FL. In the early 80's, he did some local tv commercials for Tom Stimus Chevrolet...a local car dealer. I'm sure you can find them on the interwebz. Good stuff.
I knew Dusty and Barry Windom a little because they came in clubs I bounced at. I took my Sister out for her 18th birthday. While we were out in Tampa we ran into Dusty and Barry and they were wrecked signing Karaoke. I told Dusty it was my sisters birthday so him and Barry give her a big cigar Jack Daniels kisses. To funny, she still has forgiven me!!😁😁
When i was in jr. high , i would see Dusty in his Mustang. I was walking to school & Dusty was there to visit his brother. I don't know how he got in that car ? Halton City child hood awesome! Texas !

Of course I was an ignorant little kid but just thought id share my memories of my opinion of the American Dream as a 6 year old kid. I liked Hogan, Sting, HBK, Undertaker and the Macho Man. Nick Tucker, that elbow was so calloused it was like getting hit with a hammer. Big Dust was one of the most respected on the Circuit. The only reason he went to WWF/E was for a break. He didn't have to worry about running the show the way he did in The NWA and Crockett Promotions.
@@johnderekmitchell1510 he was older, it was big money; not only could he still make bank for doing less overall, he could do less in the ring for more in WWF as opposed to NWA matches. Probably gave him a few more years of his in ring career.
