You'll probably get some flak for this video being sponsored by HP and talking about an inkjet printer... but don't let that discourage you. I found this quite interesting. Pagewide isn't a technology most people are familiar with; you explained and demonstrated it very well, while making a concise, thoughtful review. I wouldn't mind seeing more similar sponsored content, as long the opinions expressed therein are honest and the product is innovative. Thanks, Wendell.

+Tek Syndicate I agree with John; nothing wrong with you receiving money that way, and it was interesting. You guys say right up front that it's sponsored (and almost none of your videos are!), and I know I can trust you to be honest. It's nice to see you getting support!

I can vouch for this printer. We have a 476, which uses similar technology and in the past year we have beat the crap out of the printer with big print jobs and it still runs like it's new. It's actually running better than a lot of our lasers.

+Tek Syndicate 1 thing I would like to see added: (SPONSORED) in the title.
Many years of youtube has conditioned me to skip 10-15 sec into a video 95% of the time, to skip the intros/repeating what the title says.

Wendell, I just bought this printer based on your review. It will be delivered on Monday. One of my main reasons to buy this was the technology. Low cost per page and the speed. It's definately more than I need but the cost saving with the ink and duplex printing to me was worth it. I'm looking forward to see how it prints photos on glossy photo paper. I downloaded the manuel from HP website and printed out on mu HP Mono laser. I'll be up to speed by the time I receive the printer. Thanks for your review.

I personally owned one of this printers, which I use for my small business so far it works really well, printing copies really fast, the scanner has a good quality, but the most important thing I can print directly from any mobile device which allows you to work fast on the go without having to login in you computer to print. Really good printer.

I'm not lying when I say I've been using hp inkjet printers for over 15 years. I know what some of their printers are rated for and while AIO (all in one) printers aren't designed for crazy usage, I've duplex printed 1000 pages per day (tabloid and letter) on various models and refilled dozens of gallons worth of ink. I would have killed to have a full page width print head back in those days. Maybe about 3 or 4 years ago, HP finally became less greedy by not making the print head for each color a consumable product. On a day to day I am using an hp printer for regular docs and an all in one mostly for network scanning and scan to email function. The one thing lacking in your review is the web based interface. HP literally has the best web configuration backend compared to brother and epson. I might consider this as an upgrade for my office when our current AIO dies. And with windows 8 and 10 it's just plug and play to your network. You don't have to install the disk anymore, unless you actually want to scan from your pc. I always just scan from the printer and scan to a network folder and keep the printer bloatware off my pc.

  • @cdogg86

I use the last gen prox 570dw by HP with similar specs. up to 80k pages printed, 15k duplex pages. so far the only issues are literally a couple paper jams. very easy to use. would completely recommend . we print about 25k-40k pages a year. would buy again or newer model if it ever dies.

As a Sysadmin this is a really interesting product, and I appreciate getting someone like Wendell's view on it. I love the HP Colour Lasers we have deployed, however I find shopping for them is an awful experience. HP if you really want to get your products out there then dear lord fix your awful website, and I don't mean another UI to get lost in. I mean proper detailed information and structuring your models properly so I can find the right size of printer and then go through and pick whether I want the DN, DW, DWE, or whatever! Stop treating them like they're all unique models!

The high cost of replacing ink/toner is my biggest annoyance and concern. I'm considering buying a laser printer for the better accuracy and reduced cost of ownership (excluding initial purchase cost) - but this printer seems very exciting and fast. I also do not print very often and laser was touted to be better for such use.
    1. Can someone please tell confirm *whether the ink/toner on this printer is more economical than the average laser printer?*
    2. Do these ink cartridges have a certain shelf-life? I know that some ink cartridges tend to dry up and become very ineffective if not used frequently enough. Is this the case with this printer also?
    3. Can we use non-HP ink/toner cartridges on this printer to further lower the cost of ownership?

The super yield ink is not that expensive compared to laser ink toner, in fact it's cheaper. You get 10,000 pages for BLK and 7000 pages for the colors. Here's the cost at HP. I'm sure other websites have sales that will further cut the cost.
      High Yield:
      Colors 136.00, 7000 pgs.
      BLK 140.00, 10,000 pgs.
      total cost= 548.00
      Regular:
      Colors 80.00, 3000 pgs.
      BLK 70.00, 3500 pgs.
      Total Cost= 310.00
      Not bad.

Selling the older models of these at work, the X476DW and X576DW, when they're on sale, it really is a compelling buy, especially given that those ink tanks give you more pages at a lower price per page than most toner drums (Brother XL being the exception, they usually do 5000 pages rather than the more common 2000-3500). When they're on sale, they're really not too bad (~$300 cad for the 476), but it is a large initial investment, and the tanks aren't inexpensive, even if they are a nice value, so most consumers balk at it.

I have the previous version of this printer, the HP Officejet Pro X476. Very good performance, very fast printing. Also very cheap to maintain but because it prints so fast, I print more than before. The text is crisp (very close to laser quality) but image quality can be improved, I think that the colors should be more saturated. It's acceptable printing solid colors of graphs, diagrams... As you've said, this printer is great printer for small-medium buisness.

Just unpacked my 477dw printer and set it up with HP's help. While on the phone with HP the first page da verical lines every inch and some white spots. Did a recalibrate and cleans the heads and it realigned and it became worse. Sent photos to the HP tech guy and he agreed that something is wrong. He put me on hold then said he has to have a consultation with HP to decide what to do...Really are you kidding. He then said something that blew me away. I had to laugh. He said I could return the new one and they'd send me a refurbished printer. I saidafter laughing why a refurbished one. He then said that's what the consultation is about.
Man, what service. Just send me a new one when you pick up the old one and of course pay for shipping on both.
The Printer looks great but I found it quite noisy, just like a laser printer. I'm leaning towards just returning the thing and look for another brand. Don't want to go through getting a new one and have the same thing happen or a different problem.. Oh I printed a few photos and every inch from top to bottom there was a line like it was scratch the paper.
    The printer looks awesome though.

this is the first time in a long time that an inkjet has wowed me. There have been 2 previous times: an epson in 1999 when I was 4 and "putting the picture on the computer on paper" was the coolest thing and another epson in 2012 when it beat my HP Laserjet in print speeds and came close in print quality. The one thing I have to say about this printer is this: "Holy fuck that's awesome!" I don't care that HP sponsored you because I know that you will speak your mind about a product and not talk good if there isn't good to talk.
If my current HP Laserjet Pro 200 dies, I know what I'm going to get!
I bet I won't ever get Lp0 with one of these. That's how my last Laserjet died. It didn't detect a jam in the fuser and caught on fire. I didn't get an Lp0 error, but I definitely saw the smoke and pulled the plug.

And the thing they dont tell you is the machine will work for 20-30k pages in the "real world" environment before white streaking occurs from damaged/clogged print nozzles. And its uneconomical to replace the printhead. Great while it works, but general money pit. The Lack of direct connection to Earth in the Power Supply causes frequent "blue screen of death" errors in home/work environments that suffer from high amounts of static electricity. Staff dragging their feet on the carpet as they walk up to the printer to collect printouts then touching the printer transfers static electric charge to the machine and the motherboard flips out and hangs, forcing the user to unplug and replug the unit at the power socket. Seen many customers with this fault.

+chris eldred But a laser will always give a cleaner, shinier print from cheaper paper. You need really high quality inkjet paper to get even close.
Nobody ever seems to factor in the cost of the paper in the per page cost. I can only assume that in most business cases the crispness of the print is unimportant.

First thanks for being up front that its sponsored, second I am a HP Fan boy when it comes to Inkjet and Laser Printers. Once my old work horse dies I will look into this. Thirdly, please start reading the YT comments and encourage the other Tek employee's to do like wise. I don't have time to bounce around from site to site, if I am on youtube and leave a comment I would expect someone from Tek to read it. Ignoring people's comments on youtube or pretending that they don't exist to drive traffic to your forums is not exactly in great taste.

Inkjet printing has come a long way, especially in Sheetfed Digital Press sector. The technology developed for that has trickled down in to this market. Inkjet is here to stay in one form or another.

Just got one directly from the vendor. Completely new! First, it doesn’t accept the all new included cartridges because they are „used“ or „old“. For installing, I cannot take some other inks, not even directly from HP… by the way, guarantee ran out in June, it was bought in September. It seems, HP is really ripping off their customers… 😢

I have the 476dw and it is one of the cheapest cost per page printer (that doesnt cost as much or more than my car). I wish i had waited for this to come out, the speed looks so good, not that the 476dw is bad at 36 pages a minute.
As far as inkjet goes though if your spending say like 100$ on an inkjet printer then yea its not as good but these printers from hp are a really nice exception especially considering the price compared to laser printers. my grandmother has the hp 8610 and although its slow the cost per page is almost as good as my 476

Uniformity problem. My test on Staples: uniform horizontal color strips on portrait letter size pdf file does not print as uniform strips.
It looks as if the page wide print head has several sections. Each section prints slightly different color compared to another section. We can notice the difference of colors from the two adjacent sections.
At same Staples store, I printed the same pdf file on a HP color laser printer. The uniform horizontal color strips were printed as uniform color strips.
I printed the same pdf file on a Canon Maxify inkjet printer in which the print head moves. The uniform horizontal color strips were printed as uniform color strips.

I m not certain what this accomplishes. It is probably one of the fastest ink jets around, but an ink jet is still an ink jet. For that money, I think it makes more sense to get a laser printer which would most probably be more reliable.

In terms of cost per page these will never be as low as Epson's Ecotank line. They can be cheaper then refilling your own cartridges (they just cost 3x more for the printer).

Michael Kvernenes This is not about freedom of speech. You have to swallow the fact that Apple exists and is a highly profitable company. Partly because of the higher profit margin and partly because of the sheer volume of devices they sell.
iPad has taken over the tablet industry (which was their's to begin with), and fits really well into a corporate environment. You disregarding that fact is what makes you seem immature.
