- Today we have a very special video from our visit to the Titleist TPI earlier this summer. Bob Vokey, the legend himself joins Ian and Mike to do a test showing the difference in performance from a worn out wedge face vs brand new grooves.
Then, as a special bonus, Bob gives Mikey a blind wedge fit to pick out the best grind for the job! It was a pleasure getting to spend some time with someone like Bob and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

I would have loved to see the Vokey T-Grind 60-04 compared to the 60-04 L-Grind in this video. Lots of guys on tour playing the T-grind.
funny how Bob kept pointing out the height of the launch on the old wedge expecting the new one to launch lower, then for it to come out exactly the same and force him to pivot to consistency instead of angle

In the best players they know that the launch is lower on the newer clubs, but dynamic loft still has the main effect. So he does have a point but just like science you always have to account for variables

The last wedge Mikey tried was the 60 deg S grind with 10 deg bounce, and he seemed to hit that one with the most confidence and spin. Why at the conclusion of the video did he choose the M grind instead?

Nowhere near as much. The high lofts of wedges have much more shearing action between the grooves and the putter. Wedges also get used more & get used in bunkers.
Have my wedges 15 years, starting to get used to them now. Damned if I’m going to change. 🤣

I look at it another way. After you get them broken in, they're very consistent.
I live in South FL and its amazing how hard it is to find a high bounce wedge for us folks who play on Bermuda almost exclusively
Just moved to Florida from Oregon. Clueless on what grinds/bounces to get for the grass here. We got mud and dirt based turf in Oregon. My new home course here has none of that LOL. Just tight lies, sandy areas and grainy sticky Bermuda.
@@TaroZak buy at least one wedge with a bounce of 10 to 12 for chipping. You do need a low bounce wedge for compacted bunkers. High bounce for soft sand bunkers.
just get two sets - one for practice you beat up and one for play.
With things like the more expensive BGT wedge shaft or other Graphite wedge shafts becoming more common place, changing wedges is expensive and a potential a waste of the other components. I'd like to see a legal hosel that allows the swapping of head's along with the sale of heads only. Rather than hinder sales if you're switching from inland to costal courses as in the UK. or for short sessions were it goes from soft to hard quickly. It would encourage folks to purchase a set of heads with different grinds. I'd love to buy a kit of heads.
I was thinking along the same line except for putters (actually saw a patent application from Ping doing something like this for putters - game changer IMO). I play two wedges for less than full shots. Love Mr. Vokey and his wealth of knowledge, but dropping $400 every two years would be a bitter pill to swallow.

this is a great idea. You can get head only wedges from some suppliers and then get a club-tech to reassemble them, but being able to change heads throughout the year would be awesome. As you know in the UK, conditions are somewhat... changeable.
@@cksamo evnroll already has a interchangeable head hosel system for putters definitely should check them out
@@HiReZ09 I love Evnroll. I currently have the Er8v. But their system relies heavily on their hosel, which means you have to switch shafts if you want to change toe hang, because the hosel is epoxied to the shaft. I’m on my 4th different head and 4th different shaft. I should probably just go get fitted 😆. But honestly changing it up is part of the fun for me.
Terrific insight, well done to all. My critical mind tells me that if Titleist primary motive is to improve golfers performance, why are amateurs paying €200+ for a wedge change? Don’t want to get started on their price point for ProV’s either!

Bob makes the point about when the wedge gets worn out but the average golfer doesnt hit enough solid shots with spin to realize what it feels like.. to even make the distinction... to even realize how their dispersion is affected and on and on..only in person with a coach/instructor this is understood / while working with range monitor. I'm not throwing shade, but this is what I hear playing with average golfers on daily basis. To make another distinction they dont know how the ball works as well, if you game anything else other than prov1 or 1x good luck getting your ball to respond on the greens with any spin, stopping action

Guys today, I’m gaming a fresh T grind and prov1x. They are mind boggled at the check I get. And they can’t understand why their Callaway super soft with their 6 year old 56 degree isn’t checking up.
I play chrome soft, z star xv, 1x, tour bxs. All them spin haha
Yeah you have to change your wedges every 75 rounds. Wedges after all only cost £159 each so nearly £500 a year to you Bob. Also why are you hitting pitches with a 60 degree wedge when really you should be using 52 to 54 which will bring launch down to below 30 degrees?
As a general rule/ start, If your PW was at a 64 degree lie angle, do you recommend 63.5 for GW, 63 for SW and 62.5 for LW ? So flattening the lie angle by 1/2 a degree throughout the wedges
Or a little flatter like 63 GW, 62.5 SW and 62 LW?

This is an interesting supplement to the discussion whether or not the P and G wedges should be part of the iron set or the wedge set. That is, if they must be replaced as often as Vokey suggests, and since your tests demonstrated the performance is equal, this suggests that it would be better, i.e., less expensive, to include them in the wedge set, rather than the iron set, although it is possible, of course, to buy individual irons.

Lots of gibberish. If Mikey is a cutter does Bob want him in more bounce or less? Bob also said at the end you want bounce on 56 and no bounce on 60 so you use either depending on turf. Mikey’s also apparently an m grind man even though the s worked best.
Mikey I’ve heard you before talking about turf interaction with irons relevant to soil width. Diggers or guys that get steep having better turf interaction with narrower preworn soles. The same player when picking a wedge is usually guided towards a higher bounce model with a larger sole. How do the dynamics differ?

99.9% of golfers wouldnt even play 75 rounds over about 3 years, so it's not mad to say that. And every shop offers a trade in on old wedges for a reasonable price of new clubs

Can someone explain what is the difference between backspin and spin rate? Before this video, I always thought its the same thing.
spin rate is total. If the difference was higher, that would indicate left-right.
Which wedge grind tends to have a lower ball flight out of the S grind and the M grind?
I think I remember Bob saying the S goes a little higher than a M grind in a past video I watched. Am I remembering right or no? In some ways I would think the extra bounce on the S grind would make it go lower. Thanks guys!!

Wedges always look worn, even if you haven't had them long. I just get on GC quad and check the spin numbers. I think once you lose 1000 maybe 1500 rpm on a full shot, then you're gonna have issues.
And here I was wondering whether my SM4's that I've played 400+ rounds with are still good to go for another 2 years. Guess not

Make wedges $100 a pop again and I'll swap em out more, but with the current $200 wedges, I'll pass. Golfing industry pricing has gotten out of control.
Imagine just making a wedge that lasts longer for the average golfer instead of preaching to replace your wedges after 100 rounds…
What i hate about Vokey is he charges more for raw finish. Every other company charges the same price as their other finishes. He charges a premium for not having to apply a finish on his wedge. It's a total scam by him. $229 vs $179 USD.
Please, 500 rpm SD in a 4 second ball flight is nothing.

Hi Guys. I am having to resort to commenting on your channel again. I commented a couple of weeks ago looking for a response to my unanswered email enquiries.
I sent my Dad for a fitting. Mike set my Dad up with a selection of xxio wedges, Irons and hybrids. Dad was delighted with the experience and excited about the clubs.
This was back in April.
Since that time, nobody at TXG has proactively contacted me to say there was going to be a further delay. I have had to do all the running.
I commented on here on Aug 15th and Mike contacted me the next day.
I received further promises of clubs being shipped and reps being spoken to. I would apparently have an update by the 20th. I have emailed twice since that date and I am still not getting any response. Keep in mind I spent €3200 canadian on the clubs.
I feel incredibly let down by TXG

Got my vokeys on ebay avg $89 the 52 56 60 were like new the 48 has a strike mark very lite rust showing.. we aren't here to make bob wealthier, we're here to get better and use the best tech we can afford. Ive played a lot less the past 9 years, and my grooves are niiicee lol moral of the story; get good @ ebay.
How many people can afford to change out say, 3 wedges at £160 each every year???
A lot of people if golf is their primary hobby.
I’m all in. I buy a new one whether it is worn out or not. Get bored in the winter and buy golf stuff wether I need it or not

Easy when you're being given the wedge for free. Not so easy when having to pay £130 plus each. we are paying for the pro's wedges in the price of ours.
Why not just redo the grooves rather than by a whole new wedge?
Man ole Voke is looking Svelte these days! One of my greatest disappointments was not being able to make my appointment to have him make me wedges a few years back due to work conflicts.
Sm6 a 6 year old wedge and to be fair not a lot of difference and I'd bet near on zero difference to a sm8 even of it has had 50 plus rounds. As a scratch player the course conditions greens fairways etc play a far bigger part in wedge control, I'll be keeping my sm8s a good 3-4 years before I change again.

Didn't look like much of a difference that would be significant for amateur golfers. Who cares what the standard deviation on spin is when the average weekend hacker has a 30-60% chance of chunking/blading their wedge shots? If you have a lot of disposable income, sure, regularly swap out your wedges if you want. But I recently went from 5-yr old MG1 wedges to brand new MG2 wedges, and guess what? I still average 95-105 per round lol
All of that inconsistency in launch, dispersion and distance adds up to a lot of shots for every golfer. The clubs dont guarantee you will get better at golf. Maybe go practice properly with them and you would get better 😂
It does make a big difference for better amateurs. You just suck at golf.

Want to save the groves and the face of your wedges and irons....stop hitting POS range balls or balls that just crap. Use the balls you play with and trust me you do not need to hit 60+ yards to fine tune your short game....you can archives so much with in 30 yards or less. As for the test on the wedges....way to little bounce....need far more than 8-degree...10-12 would have been far better. That said, would have enjoyed seeing the manner in which Micky had addressed the ball...hence, the ball position, was the wedge placed behind the ball properly given the bounce. Lastly, was that towel there for good looks...hardly got any love after each shot....shame. With respect to the swing...Micky, get more creative with you swing and finish...way to much cut shot going across, the high fishing. The temp was very nice given all the shots :D
Come’on I get you try to get Mikey involved but he doesn’t know how to change his technique to do what modern wedges are supposed to do…? I’m so tired of videos with him or the other knuckle head doing the swinging! If it’s not just you or Mac or righty mac I’m un subbing!
