Why is SPOILER Miquella's Consort in the Elden Ring DLC? | Shadow of the Erdtree Lore

  • It's not as random as you might think. Massive spoilers for Shadow of the Erdtree.
When I finished up the Elden Ring DLC, I had so many questions: Why is Radahn the final boss in the Elden Ring DLC? Why is Radahn Miquella's consort? Did Radahn agree to make that vow with Miquella? Or is there something much more sinister going on?
After scouring both the DLC and the base game with a fresh pair of eyes, I found my answers.

Miquella’s order would be like the flame of frenzy, instead of all things being melted into a indescribable slurry, everything would be made one by Miquella enslaving everyone, making perfect, and total order, where everything would be in endless stasis, forever nascent, much like Miquella himself

Speaking of Metyr, she could be the root of the corruption at the heart of so many things. It has been speculated that the greater will doesn’t care about what form order takes as indicated by putting forth Malenia as empyrean despite being under influence of an outer god, but I don’t think that’s the case. The Greater Will seems to have abandoned Metyr and thus the fingers that chose empyreans. Metyr constantly trying to contact the Greater Will may have been what attracted outer gods in the first place, or she may even be trying to invite a new god to rule over the order, as Kowtower’s Resentment implies she has become hateful towards the Greater Will that abandoned her. The theme of intergenerational trauma and parents abandoning their children runs deep in the DLC.

It might have been Miquella's curse that caused all of this. The situation with young Radahn sounds awfully close to a child asking their parents to marry them when they grow up and the parent humoring them with "of course, honey." I think Radahn agreed to the vow while assuming that the child would never actually accomplish his goal.
The statue at the Haligtree (with the older brother holding the twins) shows Malenia clearly older than a child (appears to be a preteen), so Miquella might have asked Radahn for this vow while being a preteen and knowing the implications, but Radahn still saw him as a child due to his stunted growth.
In some sense, Radahn may have been correct in his assumption that Miquella was still too naive, because Miquella, being cursed with eternal youth, seemed to have never outgrew his childish mindset and ambitions. Thus, he forced his will on Radahn, who thought he was making a promise that would never come to pass.
Radahn never realized how fearsome and twisted an eternal child with godlike powers could become.

There's a vid of showcasing Miquella's 3d model and he has a ring on his right ring finger iirc. So I don't know if Radahn was serious, joking, or pressured to be his consort but the ring is proof I guess that he did proposed and not some off hand promise (Doubt its godwyn's proposal ring since the dlc items described radahn as miquella's wish consort). It's been my own headcanon too that Godwyn was Miquella's first choice. Miquella had to give up on that due to the eclipse failing though. The boy is every bit as deranged as his mother and just doesn't know when to give up. I also think that his relationship to Malenia isn't as sincere as she believes it to be - much akin to the one with his followers.
As for Mohg, I think he was necessary to enter the land of shadows because he was a demigod AND shows extensive traits of the crucible. That naturally creates a much stronger connection to this realm than his siblings (Morgot sealed his "accursed blood" and thus wasn't viable).

This doesn't make sense at all. The Eclipse Miquella tried to use on Godwyn was to give Godwyn a true death from the soulless monstrosity he had become, which only occurred when Ranni assassinated Godwyn in the Night of the Black Knives, event that cause Marika to shatter the Elden Ring and cause The Shattering period.
Miquella chose Radahn because he was strong and yet kind. You can see that on the item description for Remembrance of a God and a Lord. It reads, and I quote, ''In their childhood, Miquella saw in Radahn a lord. His strength, and his kindness''
Marika is responsible for the biggest atrocities in the story and you're comparing Miquella to her because he charmed Mohg in order to get access to the Land of Shadow? That's a crazy way of thinking to me. Multiple genocides = making some people like you? See how silly that sounds?
''I also think that his relationship to Malenia isn't as sincere as she believes it to be'' This makes zero sense.
''As for Mohg, I think he was necessary to enter the land of shadows because he was a demigod AND shows extensive traits of the crucible. That naturally creates a much stronger connection to this realm than his siblings (Morgot sealed his "accursed blood" and thus wasn't viable).'' I like this part. This is also how I believe how Mohg gained access to the Land of Shadows when it was sealed away by Marika, by being an Omen and by being a child of Marika. Good thought.

    • @WispFigment
      @WispFigment 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@guighee7310 I think it's possible that Miquella could've looked up to Radahn and chose him as his consort, it's just strange that there was absolutely 0 connected between the 2 even hinted at at all in the story. The biggest issue I have canonically with this was what was the reason Radahn took part in the shattering war on his own side and not just join Miquella then to be his consort

I don't think Miquella used Mohg for the formless mother, I think it was because Mohg is an omen who are touched by the crucible. The Omen cannot return to the Erdtree where all spirits of the lands between go after death as seen with Erdtree burial and spirit summons. Those devoid of grace, who cannot return to the Erdtree are sent to the Land of Shadow to be killed by Messmer. Omens relate to the hornsent too who are more close to the crucible and even have the gate of divinity. The blood ritual Mohg conducted under Miquella's influence is probably the thing that allowed him to enter the Land of Shadow.

Also Miquella’s order is opposed to Ranni in a more thematic/character driven sense. Miquella basically wants to be Marika 2 electric boogaloo, but has given no indication for him being any different. And to Ranni, him “stealing” Radahn might be the same to her as Marika stealing Radagon from Rennala, a potential source of her trauma/motivations. She would not want her family to be stolen again. Ranni clearly values genuine attachment to people given her questline and ending, not forcing us to serve/wed her. In addition, Ranni’s order of stars would exist but she would be unknown to the lands between. Miquella specifically wants to be known, he cannot mind-control people through affections, if he is unknown. They even use different domains of sorceries vs incantations.

When we take the order from the lands between we leave it in a anarchic state (the absence of order is chaos or mayhem), a lawless land where there is no major power to enforce the law to protect the weak against the worst human kind can offer or against demi-humans or misbegotten, there is also a power vaccum as well, so a tyrant could take over and make life there more miserable than before. I picked the death mending rune because I wanted to fix a land where nobody could die with all those decrepit zombie like aristocrats and whatnot, and also to correct Godwyn's fate that got destroyed by Ranni and the growing influence in the land from his living body festering and corrupting everything.
But the ending didn't give any clue to what would change (aside from the concept of death being back, even for the undead), nor what it did for Godwyn.
And the Shadow of the Erdtree is supposed to be an entire realm entirely, yet there were two differents area with Godwyn's cloned face in it and it was full of "Those who live in death" which is quite surprising, but no mention of Godwyn at all in the DLC I'm so sad that this whole thing is left open ended and as a mystery :(

Ranni only cares about Ranni and is happy to murder anyone to get her way. I lean towards her being an experiment with the amber egg to account for her empyrean status. She seems emotionally detached from everyone else and doesn’t even have a picture of any family member in her tower. Yes, there’s the item about Rennala and her looking at the moon but it’s likely the affection is mostly one sided.
Radahn is interesting and the most similar to Radagon. While he was infatuated with the tales of heroes and war to the point he would excel he is also interested in academia. Any battles he participates in likely have clear objectives and few civilian casualties unless a purge is ordered. Even then he’s likely to pass the buck onto someone else or whoever is giving the order wouldn’t ask. Outside of ranni just trying to establish her own order, we don’t really see her explicitly trying to stop miquella. Also, we don’t really have evidence that radahn wanted there to be a change in the order, especially given he practically worshipped radagon and Godfrey, the 2 mascots of the golden order. However, godwyns death could have occurred so miquella didn’t get his first choice in a consort (presumably), but I don’t see any affirmative evidence for either godwyn being miquellas first choice, or that this was why godwyn was killed by ranni.

Even the care for Leonard has a self-centered foundation. If it was actually motivated by a selfless desire to take care of him, he would've gotten the horse a retirement plan and grabbed a magical chariot or something. Learning gravity magic to continue to ride Leonard is a manifestation of the same character flaw that led to him holding back the stars. But ultimately, I look at it through the lenses of Miquella being a thousand+ years old genius, yes, but still a child with underdeveloped brain, his age of compassion goes against your entire will to power quest, culminating with burning Leyndell and all its inhabitants just to complete your quest.
We’d all want an age like the one Miquella proposes, but life is more complex than that, and sometimes, you have to make hard choices, and that’s the burden Saint Trina was speaking of.
That said, I disagree that Radahn and Ranni were working together, Radahn wanted the throne for himself, before he was stopped by Morgott, and Ranni didn’t have much to say, after her brother’s demise, you’d think she’d be sad, that her brother and ally was out of his misery, unless they were working for different goals.

Considering Radahn is a true warrior, the most likely explanation is that he would only willingly become Miquella’s consort if he defeated him in combat, thus proving himself worthy of Radhan (thus honouring their vow, which likely has conditions like most agreements). Thus, Miquella sends Malenia, his blade (blades are weapons/“extensions” of their lords and thus serves as his proxy) and his twin to defeat him.

I think that the way Miquella and other characters talk about a “vow” taken between him and Radahn, makes me believe that Radahn actually agreed at first about being his consort. It would make senses for him to agreed bc at first Miquella was also a big follower of the Golden Order, and why wouldn’t Radahn want to become a Lord like his idols? So the vow would be if Miquella becomes a god, Radahn would be his consort: “Now, the vow will be honoured, and my Lord brother's soul will return.
So that he may be my consort.”
But after that Miquella lost faith and left the Golden Order, trying to start his own faith and Radahn was not willing to be his consort and going against the Golden Order.
The final memory of the dlc, Miquella has a pleading tone to his voice, looks like he is trying to convince Radahn that the new world and new faith he wants to create will be a good thing, more kind than the current “I'll make the world a gentler place”.
It would make more sense why Miquella send Malenia to forcefully kill him, and even called Radahn “promised consort”, instead of going for another willing candidate: Miquella was attached to the promised Radahn had made, hoping Radahn would change his mind ou be force to go through his promised. If he was straight up denied from the beginning this fixation wouldn’t make a lot of sense (and we see that Miquella can become fixated in promises, like giving Godwyn a true death or healing his sister, going to great lengths to try fulfill them)

Interesting that I interpreted Miquella's "I'm going to become a god" very differently. To me he sounds extremely scared rather than excited, for he likely knows what becoming a God entails, which is why all of his actions have a very strong sense of desperation to not follow exactly Marika's footsteps. Posting my little twitter rant I had about this:
Miquella literally takes us on assuming we're Marika's champion here to preserve her Godhood over his. Man's aware he's being hunted by us and is likely rushing things. Literally first time we get to see another agent in the world progress it's state without our direct involvement when the rune shatters, that's how hot on his trail we are, and we're canonically fiending to murder him since we're trying to become Lord. We're prime Godfrey hunting the Fell-God because the pretty woman of our choice told us we need to to be king. While he's not perfectly rational, I think people are overselling the "dumbness" of his actions.
Namely that, he's following Marika's footsteps as much as possible, because as far as we and anyone else can tell, these are unnegotiable steps to transmogrifying one's "mortal" self into a God. He's operating under the principle that HAS to perform these steps to get to his goal. The failed Haligtree probably cemented this fact for him, that there were no shortcuts. It's clear to me at least that he's doing everything in his power to cause a different outcome while under these very strict restraints.
Namely his consort choice is a very significant factor, but also the interactions with his followers paint a more interesting tale. One description that stuck out to me was the emphasis on Miquella uncompromisingly choosing Radahn for his kindness rather than the usual criteria which is "strongest homeless man available" that Marika used for vengeance. Radahn's kindness & non-physical strength was so particularly unique in the world to Miquella that he refused to even consider any other option even after all the years, instead making this very extreme plan to make sure Radahn was the consort because it was the only chance for the kind world he hoped for to come to pass after he would be forced to abandon all of his own humanity.
Radahn's gravity magic I believe plays a huge role in this. Miq didn't want Ranni's ending, because the destiny of the stars is still a destiny. By combing Miq's severing from Marika's order & the greater will, Miq's use of unalloyed gold to resist influence of other outer gods, & Radahn's ability to halt the fate of the Stars, Miq truly could create his ideal world as free from these external actors as much as possible while also potentially being able to revive Godwyn now that the Eclipse can be pretty much toggled with control of the celestial bodies. I know it may seem like Miquella is just another God for the greater will, but he very clearly views you as a holdover/champion of the older order & since all the vessels for the Greater Will have to arrive via starfall, Radahn's gravity abilities allow for him to cut off any subsequent Elden Beast/Fingers from landing.

Miquella sounding excited he was going to be a god in the memory? Really? I feel like he rather clearly sounded terrified, and this is backed up by his crosses which show the feelings he had to leave behind to become a god, such as his doubt, vascillation and love. The final cross at Enir-Ilim's Spiral Rise emphasizes it even more so, stating "I abandon here all my fear." I think Miquella wanted Radahn to be with him because of his fear, and what he would lose by becoming a deity (as we see from Saint Trina's questline and her desire for him to be slain), drawing from his childlike disposition. Miquella was afraid, but foolishly pushed forward anyway, compelling those around him and losing his humanity in the process.
Edit: In general, while your interpretations are pretty interesting and valid, I do think it leans a bit too much into everything being a conspiracy of Miquella's or everyone being against him, which these lore figures are usually a bit more grey than that, both in Souls games generally and with GRRM's characterization style. We're not even really sure Radahn was controlled or whether he just wanted a pact of being beaten by Malenia in battle to occur before agreeing, it's purposefully left unclear. Miquella obviously errs in becoming a god, but he's not this evil mastermind either, I feel.

they are described as having "tutelary deities" who it appears once lived among them in some form, and (lore from the ascetic outfit) it was apparently possible to become one from being an ordinary hornsent
there's also the unspecified*divinity " the grandma calls on to inhabit the lion that may or may not exist
finally she's also apparently an Empyrean, so hornsent have at least the potential to become Marika style capital-G Gods
so they've got a lot going on religiously speaking

I think compassion and a "making the world a gentlier place" is not as incompatible with endless war by historical precedents. All the Holy Wars, and christianity in particular (by the similarities in the philosophical views of Miquella and Christ) are a great example. They don't say "peaceful", but can be interpreted as a gentiler place where the meek are under a single regime (ending all other political rivals) and suffering is met with a compasionate death (maybe Miquella can compel ending one's life if he wants). The war is against anyone with a disenting opinion, much like Marika's age
Also, Radahn is Carian, so by stoping the stars he delayed his own fate. I think if the vow with Miquella was fated by the stars, he could not stop the stasis even if he wanted, locking himself in a status quo only releaseable by death. Following this, a crackpot theory is that Miquella ordered Milenia to weaken/kill Radahn so he can fulfill his vow.

You're proposing that Radahn was raised as a member of the Carian royal family and then went on to do extensive additional study of gravity magic, and yet he never at any point managed to understand the interactions between the stars and the fates of the Carian royals? That just portrays Radahn as incompetent. I don't think FromSoftware is intending to portray him as incompetent.

I wonder if the real reason for Radahn to challenge the stars was to halt his own fate as a Carian royal. After realizing the implications of his vow to Miquella, and seeing the effects of the mind control abilities in the hands of someone so childish, the only way to get away from his vow would be to lock his own fate as promised consort away.

Radahn wanted it. He was a kind man. He had to die to have his body put into an omen to disconnect himself from the erdtree. This is why he made Jerren vow to give him a death. He wanted to be a Consort like both his role models, what greater honor/glory then starting a new order. I think people just don't like the fact that they're working against their favorite character lmao

Ranni and Radahn were definitely apposed to each other, Radahn was a golden order fanboy(at least by association) and Blaidd leaves a message at the entrance to Nokron where the meteor struck saying something like "So the traitor's dead then, onwards to the path of Nokron." Jerren being on good terms with Iji kinda makes sense, Iji probably convinced Jerren to do the festival and many of Ranni's allies help in it too. I don't know how long Jerren served Radahn but he might've been planted as a spy just after he halted the stars.

  • @giverdend1416

The theory about Radahn is interesting, but the problem is that if Radahn was charmed, then he wouldn't really hold back the stars to avoid his fate or try to get away from Miquella. The whole point of Miquella's charm ability is that no one can resist it. Moreover, Miquella asks about honoring "our part of the vow", so we don't really know what the vow was, but it was certainly made before the cutscene. If Radahn was charmed, what would be the point of a vow and questioning about it? I think Radahn had probably made this vow of his own accord, but then decided he wouldn't honor his part. He also had an "honorable death" vow with Jerren, so I'm not sure if Radahn really sought "endless war". He got to die "honorably" and then he'd join Miquella in ushering in the "gentle" age. It's still kinda funny to me that Miquella chose Radahn though. Like, Rykard going the blasphemy route sounds more in-line with Miquella's goals, or Godwyn being merciful even to his enemies and saving and befriending them.
I also still think the statue is Godwyn. Radahn wears his hair braided, Godwyn has his loose in the opening credits/story trailer for the base game the way the statue does. Also, Godwyn's corpse in Leyndell has a weird fan-like growth on where his forehead ought to be, so that _might_ be an indication that he wore a circlet in life. While maybe FromSoft gave the statue an incorrect hairstyle for the sake of obfuscation, they are normally very intentional with keeping identifying markers consistent because the lore and story is obscure enough as is, so no need to misdirect players like that. I do like your idea with the circlet on the statue showcasing being charmed though, that's a very interesting detail. Malenia also has a similar circlet in the two statues that we have of her, so I wonder if she too is (and has always been) charmed by Miquella. Maybe that's why she is so utterly devoted to him (which is really sad if true). Maybe that's why she didn't seek to become a god unlike Miquella and Ranni. I also like the idea that maybe Godwyn's resurrection didn't work because of Radahn keeping the stars motionless. It could also be because of Ranni's association with the moon. She is the one who killed Godwyn after all, and an eclipse requires the moon.
As for Ranni, there are a couple interesting things. Ranni was mentored by the Snow Witch and her doll body is supposedly modelled after this mentor. In his god form, Miquella has four arms instead of his normal two in the cutscene, and his hair is wild and unbraided and spills off his back in a way that really looks like Ranni's shaggy coat. The Haligtree where Miquella spent a good chunk of his time is located in the Consecrated Snowfield. Also, we know that Miquella has a female self in the form of St. Trina. Moreover, in the arts for the DLC, Miquella rides Torrent, and Ranni was entrusted with a bell from Torrent's former master to be given to the next owner. I think Miquella was Torrent's master. As such, I believe the Snow Witch was in fact Miquella (or St. Trina). I wonder what it means if Ranni was in fact secretly mentored by Miquella. In a way, both her and Miquella wanted the same thing.
Another thing is with the moon and the stars. Ymir apparently left his allegiance to the moon because "it's just the closest celestial body, nothing more". We also find out that the Greater Will has peaced out long ago and the Fingers aren't even able to communicate with it. But then we have the idea of the Dark Moon and how the Snow Witch taught Ranni to fear it. Could the moon/Dark Moon be an outer god too? So what does it really mean that Ranni wants to bring about an Age of Stars under the guidance of the moon and keep away the influence of the Greater Will? Specially when beings like Astel, Metyr and the Elden Beast are all stars, and the stars presumably influence the "fate" of people? Ymir further claims that all people are made of stardust (I mean, technically true in our world too) and are therefore the children of the Greater Will as well. I think the character of Ymir brings a lot of interesting implications to Ranni's ending and perhaps explain why it is called the Age of Stars (people = stars), and of course provides ties too with your idea that Ranni knows about Metyr (though maybe she was talking about the Greater Will and didn't know about Metyr at all). Also, if the Fingers are winging it, does it mean _anyone_ can become a "god"? Why do gods need consorts? Who/what set these rules?

    Great video as always!
I think my favorite part of the DLC's ending is how it dismisses the concern people had about Goldmask as someone who wanted to take away free will. We clearly see that it is in fact Miquella who is dominating peoples minds and stripping them of their free will. Goldmask just wants the Gods to quit messing with the configuration of the elden ring. My preferred ending 😊

One of the aspects of the new lore I'm very excited to see unpacked more is all of the new information we've learned about the GW, the fingers (in general), the Two Fingers (in particular), and Metyr. While in typical FromSoft fashion they've left much of this new lore deliberately vauge, they actually gave us much more insight through the DLC into these topics than I expected they would. The biggest open question for me is what the relationship between Metyr and the GW historically was versus what it is today. Do we assume that she is (was) actually I'm contact with the GW, or was it all a ruse from the start and all the direction of the Fingers has been operating on Metyr's assumption of what the GW would want. Ymir certainly believes that Marika's Order and the fingers that guided her were rotten from the start (he also mentions that Miquella's bloodline is mired in Madness! Possible connection with Midra's manse?). Can't wait to hear your further thoughts!

im still on the fence of whether or not Radahn was or wasnt charmed, and i think its left rather ambiguous on purpose tbh. Why make a vow at all if all you were going to do was charm him anyways? HOWEVER one must also ask if Radahn would be down for nuking Caelid. I think the state of Radahns willingness in all of this is left open. Personally im partial to Radahn being a totally willing member of this whole plan. Radahns own motivations for much of the game is simply not known, and everyone seems to have a different idea as to the kind of person he was.
To some he was a warmonger, who craved battle, to others he was kind and just. the truth is likely somewhere in the middle.
