Bummer about the interior space. One of the best things about my 2005 Prius was the amount of space for people and their stuff. I was able to fit three surfboards and three men in side the vehicle. Not many cars you can do that and still get 50 miles per gallon.
It's astonishing how nearly horizontal is the front windshield. Chasing the holy grail of Cd I guess, but I wouldn't want to have to keep that windscreen clean from the interior!
@@FM-ij7iu Toyota’s own specifications. Google it. Perhaps surprisingly, the new Prius is not more aerodynamic than the old one. Toyota claims a drag coefficient of 0.27 compared with the old car’s 0.24.
My experience with just about all new vehicles, the view out the front driver side is compromised with such large A-pillars. There have been times where a car has literally moved at just the right speed coming up on a roundabout where he was hidden behind the A-pillar until I started to pull out and change the direction of my vehicle. Pulling up to intersections in slower residential area's I have noticed it also. As I'm coming to a stop I wont see a car till I start to pull out and turn. I have made it a habit now to always move my head forward and back when looking side to side now just to change the location of my viewing angle. My seat position is back far enough that my arms are fairly straight and I sit straight up, not laid back like I'm trying to sleep. (I have gotten in my sister car and feel like I'm laying down when trying to drive.)
Here's a little trick on covering the blind spots with your side mirrors. Lean to the left and put you head on the glass, then adjust the left mirror so you can just see the edge of the car. Now from sitting straight lean your body to the right so your head is near the center of the car and adjust the right mirror so you can just see the edge of the car. Now when driving and looking at the side mirrors, they cover the blind spots that would occur if you adjusted your mirrors so you'd just see the side of the car when sitting up straight. I learned this at a driver's course, pretty neat trick and I use it all the time. It negates the A Pillars and hope you find it helpful.
It looks great... But the headroom is a deal breaker for me as a 6'2" person... I also was hoping for even better efficiency (not that 57 MPG is laughable), so I'm curious to see what real world is.
If you’ve got a short torso and long legs you may be ok, but if your torso is long then you might have problems. Torso length matters more in cars with more cramped interiors.
I'm 6 ft. tall, but extra long torso height. I've never been comfortable in the back seat of the 4th gen Prius, so I guess Uber/Lyft drivers are going to have to get used to me asking to sit in front of the 5th gen? Yikes.
Prius is a real contender now. So efficient and not a turtle. I just wish visibility out of every new car wasn't significantly worse than the previous version. Eventually you won't be able to see out the back at all and we will be far too reliant on cameras that get covered with dirt and snow and ice.
I love the exterior style of the new Prius, but I'm 6'3 so it doesn't appear to be the right size for taller individuals. The other thing I didn't like is the noise from the engine when you accelerated on the highway ugh!
I had a 2022 Prius and when I went to test drive the 2023 Prius because it is sooo tiny compared to the 2022 model I decided to buy a 2024 Corolla Hybrid...hard to believe that a Corolla hybrid has more room for the passengers and driver than the 2023 Prius...luggage space was also drastically decreased and now they have huge pieces of Styrofoam that take a lot of space where the spare tire or more useful luggage could be. The Prius lost a lot of functionality over looks...
Would love to get one, but "unfortunately" I am still enjoying my trouble-free 2010 Gen 3 with 320k miles, and my "brand new" 2018 Gen 4 with 70k miles! These cars are unstoppable. And yes - I am 6'1" and not excited about the reduced headroom on the Gen 5, plus I really don't like that Toyota moved away from the wonderful cruise control stalk in favor of a "cost cut" button layout.
When I saw the new Prius design, that was my first concern, the windshield angle and the roof height. You confirm that for tall people, that could be a problem. I will stick with my 2021 Prius for now.
I agree with you, I think Toyota went too far into the form over function with the design of this car. I understand the need to update the style and appeal to new customers, but for the original prius users like cab drivers, the decrease in comfort seems awkward
I had an 09 prius and would love this new generation. My daily commuter is an 04 Sentra econobox. If we don't enter the recession in the next three years and car prices (new and used) finally start to go down, then l'll look into purchasing one of these 5th gens
This is a great review! Glad I found this channel! Most realistic and very well spoken. A lot of good info, and didn't waste anytime. Car looks dope and futuristic. I like it!
It's weird how newer vehicles sometimes have less room. My 2017 Honda Accord Coupe has less headroom and less legroom than my 2010 Accord Coupe had. In my old car, I could just barely sit in the back seat. In my newer model, I have to slouch to not be pressed into the ceiling.
You reviewers don't get it . Speed and zero to 60 times is not important to a Prius fan ........... Especially in the 4th generation. I've easily had short trips of 71 MPG and a overall average of over 60 MPG in a 4th gen . Also you are not supposed to floor the gas pedal in any Prius .
FINALLY an honest review of the new 2023 Prius - the new car has the silhouette of Lambo gallardo - if you are not 5’3” your head is a target on the new car
Based upon our 2017 Prius Prime, and our 2009 Prius, I think the real economy here is in how long these cars last, with so few repairs. We have 80K miles on our Prius Prime, but only about 1/3 that on the engine! Spending $30K once every 20 years instead of once every 10 years means *_huge_* savings!
We keep all our Toyota’s 20 years both ICEV and HEV. The interior and bodies wear our before the drive trains do. Unless you drive high milage >15,000miles/year 20 years isn’t hard.
The roof line's so low, looks like Tommy would bang his head against the headliner in a crash. Also probably can't see the traffic light too well when stopped at an intersection.
Toyota finally broke the mold and made the Prius, good looking, more fun to drive and still fuel efficient. Low 7 second 0-60? (Non Colorado testing). Huge media center update that really works? Not bad! Adding AWD is just more icing on the cake
I am 6' 1". There is no way in %#^$ I would pay that money for this can. Zippo. I have an 08 that I like very much. Off the line it is pretty bad, but it is much better relatively speaking, in passing. I did raise the seat and rejigger the middle dash speaker on the JBL system, which made a huge difference in the sound quality. It has more cargo room, I like to carry stuff, (I can carry 3 folding bikes and 3 people, all inside at once) and it has head room. I bought it for $4200 with 135k 6 years ago. It has now 176k on it. I am retired. Aside for 2 bad wheel bearings in front, which cost me very little, and a couple of mufflers, there is nothing I can say I needed to repair that I can blame on the car. I think in a few years, electric cars will be a no brainer. If you are in the luxury class, Teslas are the car, but I cannot justify the cost for myself. The nice thing about my Prius, I never worry about it starting, LOL. In all previous cars, that was always a concern in winter.
What none of the reviews tell us is the 0 to 60 in eco mode and how that compares to older model. Important to know because when you need to slam the pedal you don't usually have warning time needed to shift modes.
Seems like they really improved it but the head room is a real disappointment. Going from my 05 Camry to my sister’s 2021 Corolla is a huge step down comfort wise largely because of the lack of headspace. For road trips it makes a huge difference to have a less constrictive cabin.
Are there any Prius models that are around 4 seconds 0-60? I'm pretty sure it was a Prius that I raced last night in my Model S Performance Ludicrous+. Seemed way faster than 6 or 7 seconds.
Thought the cowl was the top of the firewall where it meets the bottom of the windshield to the back of the hood wrapping down to the rockers if separate from the fenders?
Hey TFL has Toyota changed the steering ratio? my biggest gripe about my 2014 prius is how many turns of the steering wheel it takes to take sharp turns. driving in a tight parking deck or doing a parelell park feels like i'm driving a bus.
The added power is welcomed, but the shrinking interior is a big disappointment. Does leave room for a bigger Prius model like the old Prius V for those who want high mpgs and more room.
It is a shame they cut down on the headroom and it looks like the rear hatch has more of a steep rake to it so less cargo room as well. But I guess its a compromise to increase it in the looks department. Toyota made the prius one of the most attractive cars on the road today. i'm just salty that toyota used a yellow car to debut the new design and yellow is not an option in north america. The colors on the new prius are very meh.
Another great review Tommy. You may want to ask Toyota what their plans are for snow tires for the Prius. Tire Rack does not have any snow tires for the 19" OEM tire.
The newer version had a sun roof, which can compromise head room pretty significantly in some vehicles. Is the head room that different between the old and new, if they both had the same roof configuration?
Looks they compromised quite a bit for design. As nice as it is I don't prefer the prius with a sports car design. I can't wrap my head around why I would get this over the much more spacious, functional, non claustrophobic and still efficient camry hybrid.
I saw you discussed the new instrument cluster but you didn’t really say if you liked it or if it worked well or if it was easy to see or if there was any kind of glare in certain lighting. I’ve seen one post saying its hidden by the steering wheel and I was wondering how badly. And then how low should the steering wheel have to be so it wouldn’t but then could you still get inside easy.
Vertical charging is stupid. And that hidden compartment should be hinged and open flush with the buttons/center waterfall above - lol no one wants removable bits and bobs and then fitting it back together Style looks really good, anyone under 6ft likely won't have Tommy's interior issues. I never liked the offset/center mounted instrument cluster that Toyota and some Hondas used, not bad, it just seemed like they did something different to be different. I'm surprised those C pillar door handles are still a thing. When they first started becoming a thing (I think one of the Nissan compact corssovers, Juke maybe?) I figured it would die off since it's usually kids getting in the back
I think Toyota has forgotten what a Prius is supposed to be. I think they have lost the essence of what it is. I would be unsurprised if sales suffer for it.
Thank u for ur fair & knowledgeable analysis. I own a 2019 Limited Prius & love it. I DO love the newer look, but have too much invested in mine. So I'll have to envy frm the sidelines. 👍

The claustrophobia of modern cars continues. High belt lines, raked windshields and kids getting car sick. I’m a Volvo guy, and it is happening everywhere.
The opposite of those exists as well. Try a Subaru Forester. You’ll feel like a fish in a fishbowl with its comically oversized windows and low belt line.

Man I like the new look and performance of the Prius and finally they did away with that annoying split rear window. My drawback has to be the lowered ceiling. I value my head space and don't want to suffer any neck pains. Granted I'm 5'11 and I usually travel alone. I don't know I would like to get inside this car should I see it at the dealership or the next auto show. I have been looking at the used Prius V because of the greater interior space. Good job Toyota but don't hate on potential taller buyer's over 6ft.
I think current Prius is well designed and efficient although it is not that pretty. I mean it doesn't have all the bells and whistles. I think cars should more focus on function.
I wonder why the Prius is the only toyota to get the "B" mode on the shifter ? My 2022 Venza does not have it . Never seen it on any Toyota but Prius !
I would definitely get the Prime! I gather its performance is even better (6-some-odd seconds 0-60). Much more importantly though, it gets 35-40 miles of EV range rather than 25-30 on our 2017. However, I think I’m more likely to get a full-EV.
@@mattbrew11, a lot of manufacturing defects? I wouldn’t want to buy a Tesla because their “minimalist” cockpit designs are better described as “cheapness made cool by hype”!
Did the reviewer lower the driver's seat as far as possible? It can be set quite low. If he had it bottomed out he does indeed have a long torso. I wonder if he tried to adjust it?
I’ve been looking forward to the 2023. Does anyone know if you can raise the seat enough so it will feel similar to the previous generation? I’m 5’ 3” and really love the height of my 2009. I don’t like low, sports style seats. I need the increased acceleration of Gen 5 since I’m often struggling to get onto the highway. Maybe I can find a comfortable cushion/ back support that will keep me more elevated. Any suggestions? Thanks!
They could have made the seats lower in order to compensate for the reduced headroom. There won’t be much discount on the new models even though the prices are almost the same. Probably will sell at MSRP or above.
Love the looks. Will definitely recommend it to other people, especially the AWD Prius Prime. But it's a big miss that 10 years after EVs have become commonplace, there is still no Prius E. And for that reason I wouldn't personally ever buy it.
It looks really good (never thought I would say that about a Prius). I'm very surprised about the lack of headroom. I'm sure Toyota did their homework there. Are you sure you there was not any available downward adjustment in the front seats? I can make my head nearly touch the ceiling of my Model 3 simply by raising the seat...

Bummer about the interior space. One of the best things about my 2005 Prius was the amount of space for people and their stuff. I was able to fit three surfboards and three men in side the vehicle. Not many cars you can do that and still get 50 miles per gallon.
@nkeirusophiano
Well you can get a corolla hybrid TS kombi and get event more space and same powertrain as on Prius.
It's astonishing how nearly horizontal is the front windshield. Chasing the holy grail of Cd I guess, but I wouldn't want to have to keep that windscreen clean from the interior!
The new Prius is less aerodynamic than the outgoing model.
@@delmarrathbone7092How did you come to this conclusion?
The seat can be lowered with an adjustment lever
@@tails300 people be having monstrous proportions. That is what this comment section had taught me
quit crying, my dad is 6'4' and fits in smaller cars
I'm 6 ft. tall, but extra long torso height.
Honestly the old Prius would genuinely be an interesting car if it wasn't ugly as sin.
True, but I don't mind driving ugly because I don't have to look at it. Hope other cars are pretty for my viewing enjoyment.
I love the exterior style of the new Prius, but I'm 6'3 so it doesn't appear to be the right size for taller individuals. The other thing I didn't like is the noise from the engine when you accelerated on the highway ugh!
A guy like you needs a hellcat srt challenger with a hellaphant v12 engine. Didn't you know, good gas mileage isn't allowed for tall people. Jk
FYI - the old Prius wheels are actually pretty cool if you take the plastic inserts off.
I had a 2022 Prius and when I went to test drive the 2023 Prius because it is sooo tiny compared to the 2022 model I decided to buy a 2024 Corolla Hybrid...hard to believe that a Corolla hybrid has more room for the passengers and driver than the
2023 Prius...luggage space was also drastically decreased and now they have huge pieces of Styrofoam that take a lot of space where the spare tire or more useful luggage could be. The Prius lost a lot of functionality over looks...
A wagon version would solve that rear headroom problem nicely.
Bring it back, for sure.
Prius V. Almost nobody bought the previous generation Prius V, so Toyota didn't bother with a new one.
It's not a "hidden compartment" if there's a giant button with an arrow on it, to push. This compartment is about as "hidden" as the glove box.
My concern is not another car payment. I love my 2019 Limited! I invested alot into preventative to KEEP it nice. Good move!
Geek machine, free pocket protector with the 2021
I had an 09 prius and would love this new
generation. My daily commuter is an 04 Sentra
econobox. If we don't enter the recession in the
next three years and car prices (new and used)
finally start to go down, then l'll look into
purchasing one of these 5th gens
That's too bad about the headroom. People like the look of the gen 3 yet the gen 3 had great rear passenger room
This is a great review! Glad I found this channel! Most realistic and very well spoken. A lot of good info, and didn't waste anytime. Car looks dope and futuristic. I like it!
Toyota needs to bring back the prius wagon
For sure!
70 more horsepower? I had the first year Prius and I think it had about 70 to 72 total horsepower.
I’m bummed about the lack of headroom…I’m 6’2” like Roman and enjoy the airiness of my 2013 Prius (with sunroof). Looks like I might not fit
That's why taxi/uber drivers love them
We keep all our Toyota’s 20 years both ICEV and HEV. The interior and bodies wear our before the drive trains do. Unless you drive high milage >15,000miles/year 20 years isn’t hard.
Zero chance a tesla lasts 20 years
Imagine if the new Prius gets a full on GR treatment.
When I was young a 10 seconds car was fast.
Still is not necessary to have more than that.
We are just sooo spoiled.
That head room looks too small. The visor looks close.
🇺🇸 3rd gen is my favorite until now. Bravo 5th! 57mpg from 52. 7 seconds to 60mph. Base $27k.
I cant stop seeing those Ferrari SF90-esque inspired headlights on the new redesign 😆😆😆
It’s a “space vs performance” issue now when deciding between this version and Gen 4.
I still miss my 2016 Prius IV
Seems like they really improved it but the head room is a real disappointment. Going from my 05 Camry to my sister’s 2021 Corolla is a huge step down comfort wise largely because of the lack of headspace. For road trips it makes a huge difference to have a less constrictive cabin.
Great video but may consider adjusting your phone's video recording settings because the motion is pretty jarring.
Have more head room in my 2022 impreza. Doesn't get 50 plus mpg like the prius, but it will do 33 plus all day.
Are there any Prius models that are around 4 seconds 0-60? I'm pretty sure it was a Prius that I raced last night in my Model S Performance Ludicrous+. Seemed way faster than 6 or 7 seconds.
One online reviewer got 6.8 sec for the AWD using a GPS device. That's pretty quick for it's intended purpose.
Great video.
Hows the sound system?
Certainly looks cool
Thought the cowl was the top of the firewall where it meets the bottom of the windshield to the back of the hood wrapping down to the rockers if separate from the fenders?
Man I was really excited to get this one but that I am 6'1 and it will feel very tight
I think they crushed the design, it’s actually a really good looking car. The performance seems like a drastic improvement. Great job Toyota.
Hey TFL has Toyota changed the steering ratio? my biggest gripe about my 2014 prius is how many turns of the steering wheel it takes to take sharp turns. driving in a tight parking deck or doing a parelell park feels like i'm driving a bus.
It kind of is a bus
I saw a review on another video and they confirmed the steering is very tight
Does the PHEV have lithium ion batteries? Will they produce more Prime versions than they have in the past?
I am not sure I like the look of the new one better than the old. I know that will be unpopular, but I think I like the older one better.
Yeah you’re probably the only person on the planet that thinks that lol
The added power is welcomed, but the shrinking interior is a big disappointment. Does leave room for a bigger Prius model like the old Prius V for those who want high mpgs and more room.
You won’t get a bigger Prius model when you have the Corolla Cross and RAV4 hybrids as choices.
The lead engineer told me there is not a noticeable difference in head room between sunroof and no sunroof
The Coneheads simply opened the sunroof in their Mercury Sable and the headroom was excellent.
I would prefer solar panels over sunroof. I hate sunroof IMO
@@TFLcar Was the seat set as low as could be? How about legroom? I guess with 6ft4, I am not the intended customer.
Looks they compromised quite a bit for design. As nice as it is I don't prefer the prius with a sports car design. I can't wrap my head around why I would get this over the much more spacious, functional, non claustrophobic and still efficient camry hybrid.
Have you set that drivers seat as low as it can go? I have seen other car journo`s say that the lowest seat setting`s work for 6 foot 2`er`s!
And that hidden compartment should be hinged and open flush with the buttons/center waterfall above - lol no one wants removable bits and bobs and then fitting it back together
Style looks really good, anyone under 6ft likely won't have Tommy's interior issues. I never liked the offset/center mounted instrument cluster that Toyota and some Hondas used, not bad, it just seemed like they did something different to be different.
I'm surprised those C pillar door handles are still a thing. When they first started becoming a thing (I think one of the Nissan compact corssovers, Juke maybe?) I figured it would die off since it's usually kids getting in the back
Well thought through comment.
I thought the old model dash looks more clean and uncluttered.
I think Toyota has forgotten what a Prius is supposed to be. I think they have lost the essence of what it is. I would be unsurprised if sales suffer for it.
How much is a base model - cheapest you can get - 2023 prius?
Thank u for ur fair & knowledgeable analysis. I own a 2019 Limited Prius & love it. I DO love the newer look, but have too much invested in mine. So I'll have to envy frm the sidelines. 👍
What do you mean by invested too much? Mods ? I keep hearing people day they have too much invested
@@JonFox1945 miller cat shield, full frontal wrap/bottom wrap, ceramic coating, painted 4K calipers, undercoated. LED interior upgrade/rear turn signal/reverse lites. Its been a really good car & I love it. I HATE starting all over, I'm a senior.
You didn't compare the cargo areas.
Agreed, an unfortunate omission but hopefully just an honest oversight. TFL's friend Alex on Autos says the new model's cargo area is smaller.
The claustrophobia of modern cars continues. High belt lines, raked windshields and kids getting car sick. I’m a Volvo guy, and it is happening everywhere.
What? Cars are getting bigger and bigger…
I agree yet the cars are getting bigger. Huge on the outside and stuffed on the inside
@@Redhawk24he’s talking about how the windows are getting smaller
The opposite of those exists as well. Try a Subaru Forester. You’ll feel like a fish in a fishbowl with its comically oversized windows and low belt line.
Try a 4Runner
I’m gonna miss the cruise control stalk. It’s way more intuitive to use. If Mercedes did it in the 90’s it’s the correct way to do something.
Great comment - I miss it, too - I thought it was the smartest and most intuitve cruise control ever designed.
How is it in the snow?
One day, when that Prius is 10 or 15 year old, I'm gonna drop a Honda K20A2/transmission in it... then slap Civic Type R side stickers on it... along with Honda logos front and back... and tell people it was a 'Japan only' variant.
The seat has height adjustment
I think current Prius is well designed and efficient although it is not that pretty. I mean it doesn't have all the bells and whistles. I think cars should more focus on function.
It would be great if they could graft the 4th gen greenhouse onto the 5th gen vehicle. Space, comfort, and visibility count!
I'll wait for a GR version
They need a TRD version with a turbo 300hp engine! Could compete with the other hatchbacks
That's what the Corolla GR is for.
Just don’t get a tesla. Worse mistake ive made
@@mattbrew11, a lot of manufacturing defects?
I wouldn’t want to buy a Tesla because their “minimalist” cockpit designs are better described as “cheapness made cool by hype”!
Agree, go for the ev, and skip the hybrid tech from 1995. I just bought a Nissan Ariya Venture + and love it!
Did the reviewer lower the driver's seat as far as possible? It can be set quite low. If he had it bottomed out he does indeed have a long torso. I wonder if he tried to adjust it?
"...we've got "GIANT PRIUS" written across the back..." hahaaa!
Sorry, I've been binging Simpsons lately.
Too low, less room, marginal better mpg….I’ll stick to my ev. Toyota & Mr Toyoda are really behind and simply do not like vehicles with plugs 🔌
Really like the new Prius. Any news at the event on how many Prius Primes they will produce? The last couple Primes have been far too rare.
Thanks!
I have similar issues I'm sure a seat cushion will resolve most of those issues
They could have made the seats lower in order to compensate for the reduced headroom.
There won’t be much discount on the new models even though the prices are almost the same. Probably will sell at MSRP or above.
Perhaps that's where the battery pack resides, therefore making a lower seat height not possible. Honest guess.
The seats go up and down they are adjustable with a lever. Try to relax
@@buildmorefarms1007 "Try to relax" Huh? Was that something for me or the OP?
@@buildmorefarms1007 yes, k agree they need to relax
Can’t imagine the seats being any lower. You’d be sitting on the pavement.
Love the looks. Will definitely recommend it to other people, especially the AWD Prius Prime. But it's a big miss that 10 years after EVs have become commonplace, there is still no Prius E. And for that reason I wouldn't personally ever buy it.
Prius Prime doesn't get AWD. All 220HP goes to the front wheels. The regular Prius gets AWD
The one model is a huge “meh”, but the new one is “wow”!
The rear looks like the old crx. The front looks like the Lamborghini countach with that big rake.
You're in San Diego! I just did a car photoshoot at that same exact parking lot last week!
oh yeah, the car is cool too. thanks for the video.
Really sucks that they made headroom smaller. I guess they want tall drivers (as well as taxi drivers) to go RAV4 Hybrid instead.
The Corolla Cross hybrid will be another great option.
Hopefully we can automate away taxi drivers completely in a few years
Do an mpg video comparisons if these two cars
