R.I.P Martin Hannett Tony Wilson Rob Gretton Ian Curtis They were all important ingredients to Joy Division and Manchester may their legacies and memories live on forever.
It's really interesting to note what an integral part Hannett played in the sound of Joy Division. I don't think he gets enough credit really. His production work brought JD to another level.
From Wikipedia: "Wilson notes a review that described Hannett as Serkis' "strangest role," and points out that Serkis is best known for his portrayal of Gollum in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. Wilson concludes that the reviewer's implication is correct, that indeed, Hannett was far stranger than the Lord of the Rings character."
For the rest of the world, that's one of those unknown pleasures The radio reception must be terrific in Manchester because its closer Okay, that was too corny - now I'll be still I just couldn't resist trying to post a comment of substance
Nobody ever sees the big ones coming. Plus at the time these were iust a few kids with no fame that no one expected would have lasting influence. It really was nothing.
Jim X There's not much, is there...2mins...and a 6min thing with Tony W. at strawberry studios....I was hoping to find a bit more. I suppose he said all he wanted in his work...........I'm sure he realised the importance in being an enigma !!....
It was winter, Christmas time. I was laying on the coach listen to Trasmission from Unknown Pleasures... Dark around me. Christmas tree lights: on, off, on, off, on, off.... The magic of Joy Division.
Salvador Dali was being interviewed by a reporter when he said, "Let's put a sofa up a tree and sit down there. We'll be more comfortable." So they did.
I never knew of Tony Wilson until 1 day ago. But, the last day I have learned more about him then any other Minnesoatan around. I'm miles away and years apart but my god, Thank you TONY for being around and I wish you were around. More people like this man would save what we all hope for. True rock and roll. He is Chuck berry, He is little richar, he is fucking Paul and John. Thanks Tony for being ahead of your time and making things possible for someone like me.
Great how it shows Martin Hannett dealing with three members of joy division, from guiding the drummer to his vision by just giving hjm half a kit on the roof, maybe so he doesnt feel the need to show off, getting the guitarist to focus and take it seriously, and getting the bass player to realise you cant dick about with recordings cos they never lie and he'd be embarrassed to hear it back if it isnt right.
He did like Bowie’s music, but later on he hated the fact that bowie lived to 30 when he’d idolise dying young, as shown in this scene Just realised I’m replying to a comment from 12 years ago... 🧍♂️
Ian Curtis has also become disillusioned with Bowie(24hpp, Control) and the Sex Pistols gig reignites musical passion in everyone. In Control, Ian is a big Bowie fan before 1976, but no mention is made of him afterwards. Ian like many people probably still had respect for Bowie, but either grew out of Bowie or were too ashamed to admit they liked Bowie when he was considered "an established artist" and non-punk. Ian in this scene says "he hates Bowie" but he knows well the Bowie song.
I don't think anyone in joy division hated Bowie. The band name warsaw and the Bowie song warszawa. Control also showed him to be a glam rocker when he was young. Then again I was not there and dont know for a fact.
Ian liked Bowie, much like everyone else at the start of this film. After the Sex Pistols gig, the next scene in this film shows Erasmus I believe tearing down a David Bowie poster in his flat. They are seduced by this "new wave" of music and all of a sudden reject everything they've felt about music at that point. When the poster is being torn down of Bowie, people in the house are on different sides if Bowies poster should be torn down, "No, not Bowie!".
@LennonMorrissey the guy who played gretton in 24HP looked like gretton in the mid 80's. the guy who playing gretton in Control look liked the gretton of that time period
I don't like the way Ian Curtis is portrayed in this film. He plays him like he was some kind of sociopath. The guy who plays him in Control is much better, and more accurate, according to Peter Hook anyway.
Well I've heard otherwise in interviews, and just listened to a Bernard Sumner interview that Ian in control was virtually identical. Also read that Annik didn't recognise Ian in 24 hour party people, that he was much more gentle in real life.
+Greg Williams Everybody is different but I personally think Sean Harris was great as Ian. Sam Riley was too camp and he had a Yorkshire accent so he just didn't sound like Ian. Danny Cuningham as Shaun Ryder was without a doubt the worst acting in this film. I can't work out how he ever got the part in the first place, he is small and dumpy, Shaun Ryder was tall and gangly in the early Mondays days. Paddy Considine was just like Rob Gretton. Chris Coghill was good as Bez too.
Actually got chills when I heard those notes in the studio.
They were a GREAT band.
-Martin? What are you doing?
-Recording... silence.
-Recording silence?
-Now I´m recording Tony fucking Wilson.
HAHA
R.I.P Martin Hannett
Tony Wilson
Rob Gretton
Ian Curtis
They were all important ingredients to Joy Division and Manchester may their legacies and memories live on forever.
Lost it when they get in the car and drive by Stephen still playing on the roof.
Quality.
I thought 24 party people was great. I thought control was a little too much.
It's really interesting to note what an integral part Hannett played in the sound of Joy Division. I don't think he gets enough credit really. His production work brought JD to another level.
Loved this scene, from "You're recording silence?" to the drummer left on the roof and not stopping playing as asked.

Gollum had a purpose, Hannett was a mad scientist
Should make a film on this
I'm a Manc, there is something so special about driving round the town at night and Joy Division happen to come on the radio.
For the rest of the world, that's one of those unknown pleasures
The radio reception must be terrific in Manchester because its closer

one of my favorite movies of all time, and the movie that got me into Joy Division my sophmore year of highschool
"You wear it very well!"
That's great!!!
Hooky: Prick
“You wear it very well! Now play like a fuckin’ musician!”
"...recording Tony fookin' Wilson,,," absolutely one of my favorite 24HP scene. Great movie, not totally fitting to that period, but i love it anyway
For me, the best part is when the woman says it's good and we simply see Ian say nothing, but feel he is having self-belief flow into him.
I'm in love with Martin Hannett as played by Andy Serkis.
what?your recording silence?
No,I'm recording Tony Fucking Wilson!
I love this! Andy Serkis is a legend.
I love the drum break from "Shes lost control" it was YEARS before its time yeah.
so funny to imagine martin hannett nonchalantly accepting the job to record what would go onto be a classic iconic record like it's nothing lmao
Nobody ever sees the big ones coming. Plus at the time these were iust a few kids with no fame that no one expected would have lasting influence. It really was nothing.
Watch a clip of the real Hannett. Serkis is scarily accurate!

He's a brilliant actor
Really rocking the frequency of these songs!
Martin Hannett is a genius, one of the best sound engineers. If he had not seen potential in them, then there would have been no Joy Division.
It was winter, Christmas time. I was laying on the coach listen to Trasmission from Unknown Pleasures... Dark around me. Christmas tree lights: on, off, on, off, on, off.... The magic of Joy Division.
Best part is at 3:05

I like the guy who plays Ian, seen him in a few films & always impresses.
Don’t know his name but a great actor
Sean Harris. Incredible actor.
Haha, they left the drummer on the rooftop - 5 stars! Martin is a God, BTW, recording silence. He definitely wears it well.
He was spot on as Ian Curtis.... the whole film was spot on...
Not at all
Ian loved Bowie. One of the many things this film misrepresented sadly
faster but slower , mind blow

Steve is THE FUCKING AMZING DRUMMER OF ALL TIMES. Underated as hell..
Some absolutely sensational english right here
I thought Ian liked Bowie to. In 'Control' he has his records and he even goes to his concert in the beginning of the movie. =O
He did like Bowie’s music, but later on he hated the fact that bowie lived to 30 when he’d idolise dying young, as shown in this scene

I love Paddy Considine in this movie.
Some great stories of Martin in the book sonic alchemy.
I love the line about Yates..."I would of heard of him Tony"

the end of the movie was so trippy/fucked up/awesome when they showed ian at the hacienda raving.

holy hell, IT'S ANDY SERKIS!
Ralf Little, the actor playing Peter Hook, starred alongside Caroline Aherne in The Royle Family, who would go on to marry Peter Hook in real life.
Martin Hannett was as crucial to Joy Division as any other member. Perhaps more so.

haha what a film.
"stop that horrible fuckin racket please......"
I don't like the way Ian Curtis is portrayed in this film. He plays him like he was some kind of sociopath. The guy who plays him in Control is much better, and more accurate, according to Peter Hook anyway.
I agree. Sean Harris is a good actor though, just not right for Ian. But Sean was great in Southcliffe and MacBeth.
I hate to disagree, but Pete Hook says this version of Ian is closer to what he was like. It's in all three of his books.
Well I've heard otherwise in interviews, and just listened to a Bernard Sumner interview that Ian in control was virtually identical. Also read that Annik didn't recognise Ian in 24 hour party people, that he was much more gentle in real life.

BrusselsRock he’s more recording the sounds of the nature
there is a new video out recently about Joy Division bootlegs, and there is a bootleg floating around about Hannet's atmosphere recordings
Everyone he worked with lol
Thats bullshit the bit at the end there with Ian talk about how he dislikes Bowie, Ian loved Bowie and was majorly influenced by him.
Correct. In fact, one of Bowie's final songs, "Lazarus," has a Joy Division influence: the opening guitar lick/ bass line from "She's Lost Control."
my personal motto, What Would Martin Hannett Do?
That Ian Curtis looks more like Alex Kapranos than Ian Curtis
kinda off-topic, but can someone tell me what the finish on the Rick at 2:33 is called? :D
There is more substance in the "24 hour party people" segments dedicated to Joy Division than in the whole "Control" film
I remember hooky saying that 24 hour party people showed it as shambolic and amateurish (people who didnt have a clue), whilst control didnt.
False. 24 hour party people does not describe Ian Curtis at all
See ya
No, i'm recording Tony Fucking Wilson
