Well... Amusing ourselves to death shouldn't only be viewed as criticism of TV or News. It should be viewed as criticism of Media in general. For quite some time I thought this book changed me to... The first quote Really amazed me, I was stressing out about forgetting what i read and thought that it was a problem of mine only, It appears that it's normal to not always remember everything
You describe a great book as causing a paradigm shift... I see it as a great book awakens us to a field, in the scientific sense of the word. Just like there is the gravitational field all around us, or a Higgs Boson field that is everywhere and permeates everything, there is a Van Gogh field, a Nabakov field, an Aurelius field all around us... and when we read a great book it opens our eyes to one new field that touches everything and runs through it all. The more you read, the more fields you can see.
I never thought of it that way, thank you! I usually called these sorts of things "lenses" or "theories", but damn if they don't run deeper, as implied by the "field" metaphor
I found your channel randomly when looking through older David Foster Wallace interviews. I’ve been a fan of many of the authors you have presented here and couldn’t feel more of a connection with a random content creator I’ve never met. I mean, you brought up Alan Watts, who really helped me get my anxieties in perspective. Keep making meaningful content, it’s invaluable in today’s times :)
This is kinda random, but I tried to read "A Confederacy of Dunces" when I was in middle school. My parents separated during this time, changed school and never got the chance to finish it. I always remembered the cover but never could remember the title. I always wanted to finish it! Thank you, so much!
Jrcrasto better you may have finished book mentioned above by hon late john Kennedy the most likely president by me of USA very dynamic and suitable to his position I never knew he could have written a book I will buy and read it from mind thnx
I laughed hard when you said Alan Watts was the perfect read if you went through a rough breakup. Happened to me 2 years ago and I can honestly say that listening to his TH-cam recordings cured the bulk of my anxiety and fatalistic view of life and opened me to the awesome world of Taoist and Buddhist philosophies. I'm ever so grateful to him and I also understand better why your videos move me so much.
I've read most of your list already and I can't wait to read the rest. I'll refrain from listing all the books that I want to talk about now.... But I'm so glad I found your channel.
"And for that i will be forever grateful to him, and this book" ......This is my exact feel every time i stop and think of time when i really needed Meditations and Thus Spoke Zarathustra, and they were there. Oh and end of video..music..sounds..just..beautiful.

I didn't even know that i was subscribed to your channel and today, i was unsubscribing many channels that i don't watch anymore and then i saw this channel and thought, "wtf, who is this guy?" and then i remember, ah. You haven't uploaded in a year but i will keep my subscription. Have a good day.
This is the first time I've felt compelled to comment on a video. I think you're a force for good. If you're able to, you should continue creating content as you're having a profound lasting meaning on peoples lives. I've experienced a paradigm shift from watching your videos. Thank you for creating.
I've read it like five or six times, and there are sooo many nuggets that you miss just reading it only once. There are so many intricate details and great pieces of foreshadowing. It's such an intricate web of hijinks with hilarious characters.
If you ever get to read this, I won't you to know I listen to your work over and over and over, and it's shaped me into a person I can love. Thank you for Everthing.
I'm not sure what the reason is behind you stopping to upload videos but would love to see more of you! This is one of the most valuable youtube channels I've come across! 💙🙌🏻
Opening strong with Aurelius. I only recently read "Meditations" and it really illumined my perception of things; sort of had a therapeutic effect on me with words of wisdom like "Your mind will take on the character of your most frequent thoughts." I have "Economics in One Lesson" on the shelf (unread). I'll be sure to give it perusing soon, and look into getting the others as well. Thanks for the recs!
Hello! I discovered you yesterday and have watched 3 or 4 of your videos. They are great! Thank you. I look forward to your future posts. In the meantime, I plan to read one or two of your book recommendations. I work far, far too much, so I'm not sure how fast I'll get on that, ha ha. I'm also writing a book of my own, too, so that keeps me busy as well. Anyway, what a breath of fresh air you are! Intellectual discourse on the internet? WOW!!!!
Holy shit dude, I went through your recommendation list and it's crazy how many books you have read. As a 17-year-old, only starting my "journey", this makes me really anxious. It will take me so much time to become as knowledgeable as you.
You have nothing but time. Don't worry and don't worry about 'being more knowledgeable' either. Find what interests you and keep going after that. Find a good friend group and forgive and appreciate those who need it and you'll be just fine. Worldview is just one aspect of being a good person.
The Stoics in general have made me a significantly more stable and resilient person. Although their philosophy involves some bitter pills and radical shifts in mindset.
Thank you for sharing this list! I'm gonna read every single one of this. Keep up the good work because your love for books shine through the camera.

Great list! Thanks for sharing. I've read most here, but missed 2. I'm just now revisiting Alan Watts after several years. So happy to hear his thinking again. Thanks Will!!
Excellent list. I've been searching for books to promote my own personal growth and this adds plenty of good titles to my to do list. You're making future me a much better person! appreciate it
It's a testament to how good of a youtuer you are that you put in this much work into a 'List of books' video that 99% of people would've just made into a video where they just talked into a webcam. No wonder I love to see new vids from you in my sub page. And 5:00 reminded me a lot of Frank Zappa's rant about 'Death by Nostalgia', for some reason. " It isn't necessary to imagine the world ending in fire or ice -- there are two other possibilities: one is paperwork, and the other is nostalgia. When you compute the length of time between 'The Event' and 'Nostalgia For The Event,' the span seems to be about 'a year less in each cycle.' Eventually, within the next quarter of a century the nostalgia cycles will be so close together that people will not be able to take a step without being nostalgic for the one they just took. At that point, everything stops. Death by Nostalgia."
Hey thanks! Yea, I prefer to put effort into typically low effort videos. Then you're just admitting it's all about utility and not so many other things. Love that Zappa quote.
I love you will, thank you for your videos, so creative & also intriguing, I wrote down in my notes some of these books after Christmas I’m going to buy them and read them. Thank you. Excited for more videos. Merry Christmas!
This was a great video. I'm not sure if I'll get the chance to read those books, but just watching the video itself was such a value addition. Thanks, Will.
Watts' interpretation of Eastern ideas is essential for those in the west (especially those who had a Christian upbringing) seeking to understand concepts of the self in Hinduism and Buddhism ("Hinduism for export" as he would say). His dive into Zen, and the broader school of Mahayana Buddhism is deep and expository (when called for).
Well this is getting out of hand, I've been coming to your channel regularly for the past month checking to see if you uploaded a new video. To the point where I had a dream a few days ago where I was watching that "new video".... Maybe I'm just impatient, but watching some of your videos has changed my life and my perspective (I even started reading books, which I always told myself they were a waste of time). . Your videos are just so educational and I can't thank you enough for what you do. I hope one day I can do the same for others.
That's a crazy nice comment Daito. It makes my week to read things like that. What books have you picked up? I must admit the series I'm working on now is quite long and extensive and I don't think it will be out for a while (but the amount of content will be quite large). Thanks again for the thoughtful comment. I hope all is well.
@@schodes I guess I might just open a patreon account to show my appreciation haha. I just wanted to let you know you are doing great things for our society. I wish more people would come by to watch your great content. And what you upload next will be worth the wait, just don't rush to finish it. Back when I started watching your videos last year I started going to my local library and picked up a few fiction books. I guess this replace my video game routine with a love for reading. A few weeks later I started buying audiobooks and listened to them while driving (I used to do this with your videos as well). I believe the first non-fiction I read/listened to was "The Power of Habit" by Charles Duhigg. I found it really fascinating and been using some of the things I learned in my everyday life. Sorry for my English, is really hard typing on a small screen and English isnt my first language.
I watched your remembering what you learn vid some days ago and now I got to know you haven't uploaded in a while pls start uploading again, even though I haven't been a part of this channel from a long time, I feel like missing you
Alan Watts will forever be my favorite human being. I think I own like 9 of his books. My favorite is either Nature, Man and Woman or Psychotherapy East & West. I discovered him by accident years ago. TH-cam suggested one of his recordings to me, kind of like how TH-cam suggested your video to me. I was big into psychedelics at the time, however. So his writing became the background for every trip. Whenever I’d trip with friends I’d bring one of his books with me or turn on his lectures and listen to them while tripping. 👌 existence is weird mate haha
Great video, I've read half of the books listed and they had a grave impact on me as well, especially Watts with whom I've had the exact experience! I'll make sure to follow your work in the future, and read the rest of the books from the list :)
I think that social media has made it so easy to feed our tribalism and bias to an extent where it has gotten so much harder for people to get out of it. When I listened to a Sam Harris/Haidt podcast I felt like I have never taken into account how much of our views are really nothing more than playing for one team. Funny how I stumbled upon this video that just so happens to reinforce that thought. Great content. And if you care to know: The video you made about DFW and where irony is not sufficient enough helped me on becoming a more authentic person who is less ego-attached and tries to genuinely care about others and their thoughts instead of just making fun of everything and being an annoying smartass. So thanks for that.
Love your content Will. I'm going to support you on Patreon because I think that given the freedom to create full-time you could do some truly amazing things with your talents. I'm not even sure what that would be but I know it'll be great. As a budding TH-camr myself I have a newfound respect for the amount of work and sacrifice that goes into making videos. Funny coincidence, I uploaded a video the same day as you and included an Alan Watts quote! Cheers.
how to win friends and influence people is my favorite book ever hahah didn't think you would include it. I've always had trouble in relationships with people. After reading it was like someone removed a blindfold of my eyes. I was pretty lonely at high school but now got a pretty big group of friends in college now all thanks to that book. Also cheers from Brazil :p
All of these are books I keep thinking I should read, but I haven't gotten around to it. This video, hopefully, has given me the push to finally start them. Thanks!
Catch 22. I was 14 when I read it. Afternoons, after baseball. On our Living Room sofa. It blew my mind. I've never been the same. And for that I thank Joseph Heller.
Thanks to you I've read Meditations. If I can return the favour and recommend a book that influenced me the most in recent times, it's got to be The Art of Loving by psychologist Erich Fromm. It shifts the perspective from our desire to be loved to our ability to love. And questions our often unhealthy economic perspective on relationships. Keep it up! Regards from Germany.
You make really great videos - thank you. Love how differently you spoke about the Watts book compared to the others. Very interesting. I hope your year is going well.
Excellent! And yes, I am reading 'How to win friends and influence people' currently and it is a very practical book I guess. Though it is loaded with examples ( the only downside I have found up till now) , still it seems a pretty good read. 🙂 Now after watching this video..I guess my TBR list has grown quite a bit for the near future. Thank you so much and keep uploading the amazing videos that you have always managed to 😉
Thank you for including your essential reading list, also! Maybe you have already read them, but The Image by Daniel Boorstin and Anti Intellectualism in American Life by Richard Hofstadter you might find worthy adds to your TBR list.
This is a great video with a great subject matter. I think what is manifested about this books I can compared to what I felt as a kid listening the lyrics of the songs of Los Jaivas, Violeta Parra, Victor Jara and Jorge Gonzales. They teached me about the history about my country, the dreams, tragedys, mistisism and shape a lot of my taste in the arts.
I've read the first and last on your list. The ones in between intrigue me. I've written them down for future reading. Dale Carnegie's book is one that was recommended by a professor in college though I never did get around to reading it. Off the top of my head, some books from my list would include the following: George Orwell - Road to Wigan Pier Viktor Frankl - Man's Search for Meaning Sogyal Rinpoche - The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying Charles Bukowksi - Ham on Rye Yuval Noah Harari - Sapiens Wade Davis - One River These may have not necessarily changed my life, but they have influenced my way of thinking, which is almost the same thing..
You should read Shantaram. Follows a bank robber escaping to Bombay and joining the Underworld Mafia, but discusses death, isolation, love, fate, everything, and it's written magnificently.
I have found the same sort of centring and calming feelings that you described feeling from Alan Watts' work from your work. Thank you for all the amazing videos :)
The quote from Amusing Ourselves to Death reminds me of Marshall McLuhan and his stance on mass media. He's considered the father of media studies because he involved himself with mass media just when it started to lift off, and studied the phenomenon precisely because he thought it would have an adverse affect on people.
Listed in the order in which I read them, those are probably the ones that impressed me the most. Where the WIld Things Are by Maurice Sendak La faim du tigre by Rene Barjavel Dune by Frank Herbert Fictiones by Jorge Luis Borges Also sprach Zarathustra by Friedrich Nietzsche Master and Margarita by Mikhaïl Bulgakov Breaking the Spell by Daniel Dennett
Great list I would like to add a book that meant as much to me as The Meditations. The Essays By Michel de Montaigne. Thank you again for the list I will be reading or more likely listening to some of your picks this year.
I reckon Jonathan Haidt is a strong contender for the world's most reasonable man. His work is helping keep me fairly sane when people all around me seem to be going ballistic
@@schodes Apparently, by his own admission, he used to be quite hot-headed and argumentative, especially online. I find that hard to imagine. He's pretty much the only person who manages to use Twitter in a consistently civil and constructive manner. When it usually brings out the worst in everyone.
I am a massive fan of all of your work and always click on your videos as soon as I see your notifications. I'd first like to thank you for introducing me to all of the incredible ideas and books you cover in your videos, and for introducing these ideas in such an easy to follow way. Secondly, I'd like to ask you of your opinions on Ayn Rand? I have been reading her work recently and although I believe it is natural anyone with opinions will receive as much neglect as praise, I find it difficult to understand how someone who, to an extent, pushes ideas surrounding self respect, the worth in love and individualism can be so overwhelmingly disliked. Thanks again or your amazing videos.
Hey thank you! Glad you've found some great ideas from the channel. The idea is to make them accessible so glad to hear that's working! I can't say I've spent much time with Ayn Rand, so I don't have an opinion.
Thank you for recommending mind-changing books. I've been watching your videos for a while and I appreciate them, especially the one on David Foster Wallace. I love Alan Watts as well, and your video might lead me to read 'How to read a book'. Have you read Zhuangzu? It's a valuable one too.
Of course! The DFW is one of my favorite videos as well. Glad to know you're on board as a Watts fan. I just love him. I have not read Zhuangzu! I will check it out. Happy holidays and thanks for the comment.
"Amusing ourselves to death" is why I barely watch any news. Completely changed the way I look at TV as a medium.

After reading it was like someone
removed a blindfold of my eyes. I was pretty lonely at high school but now got a pretty big group of friends in college now all thanks to that book. Also cheers from Brazil :p
Thank you for sharing your list. Looking forward to reading all of them.
All of these are books I keep thinking I should read, but I haven't gotten around to it. This video, hopefully, has given me the push to finally start them. Thanks!
doooo ittt!!!
Catch 22. I was 14 when I read it. Afternoons, after baseball. On our Living Room sofa. It blew my mind. I've never been the same. And for that I thank Joseph Heller.
That's so awesome to hear! I can feel the feels coming through your comment.
Once again a great video Will. It has to me its own spicy quote:
*"The most dangerous thing in the world is dogma"*
Thank you for that!
Maaannnnn, I love your channel!! I hope you continue to keep uploading content :)
Where have you gone?
@@schodes "I'm alive". Was about to ask that hehe. We'll be waiting for your work, Sir! Til then, let's finish 2019 well~
You sir just got another subscriber. Keep up the good work!!!!!!
Excellent! And yes, I am reading 'How to win friends and influence people' currently and it is a very practical book I guess. Though it is loaded with examples ( the only downside I have found up till now) , still it seems a pretty good read. 🙂
Now after watching this video..I guess my TBR list has grown quite a bit for the near future.
Thank you so much and keep uploading the amazing videos that you have always managed to 😉
Thanks Nasar, keep reading, keep learning, and thanks for your nice comment.
Will, keep making these great videos. You're a gem in a pile here on youtube
Awww that's very nice, thank you. Glad you enjoyed the stuff I do, preciate having you as a fan.
Again a great video! Keep up the good work. You are easily one of my favourite youtubers!
Thank you! Love your name.
Definitely one of my favorite you-tubers! Hope for more content soon:DD
Serious quality content! Definitely going to read some of these!
Thank you.
Merry Christmas, Will!
Merry CHRISTMAS JOEYWEIGHTLIFT
JUST BUILD!!!
My reaction to seeing a vid of yours is always FUCK YES. Love ya man, can't wait to see what you do next
What a nice, positive channel.
Thanks yo
This list is excellent. Your channel is youtube self-actualized, I hope you keep writing/making more.
Hey thanks that's a real nice thang to say. Glad to have you as a fan.
Thank you for including your essential reading list, also! Maybe you have already read them, but The Image by Daniel Boorstin and Anti Intellectualism in American Life by Richard Hofstadter you might find worthy adds to your TBR list.
The list you have made is really great ! Thank you !!
Great to hear! Thanks for your comment!
Nice video! Thank you for sharing!! I'm definitely picking up two or three of these! Especially the Jonathan Haidt one!
Please come back, I hope life is good with you.
Glad I stumbled onto this channel.
If only I can save up for audible I’m getting all of these.
Send me your address and I’ll send you one of them. (Email-willschoder@gmail.com)
Will Schoder Aw, that’s so nice of you- thank you so much!
Cool! I actually just picked up a copy of "Meditations" at a used bookstore the other day. Looking forward to reading it.
It's money. Let me know what you think!
Hell yea Vincente. Always keep a kid's mentality when learning.
That patreon link is great! I can't wait to read some of these books
Great to hear! Enjoy!
I've read the first and last on your list. The ones in between intrigue me. I've written them down for future reading. Dale Carnegie's book is one that was recommended by a professor in college though I never did get around to reading it.
Off the top of my head, some books from my list would include the following:
George Orwell - Road to Wigan Pier
Viktor Frankl - Man's Search for Meaning
Sogyal Rinpoche - The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying
Charles Bukowksi - Ham on Rye
Yuval Noah Harari - Sapiens
Wade Davis - One River
These may have not necessarily changed my life, but they have influenced my way of thinking, which is almost the same thing..
You should read Shantaram. Follows a bank robber escaping to Bombay and joining the Underworld Mafia, but discusses death, isolation, love, fate, everything, and it's written magnificently.
Amazing video Will. I haven't read any of them but will do asap. The book that caused paradigm shift in me was 'Sapiens'
Sapiens is a great book. I hope you enjoy these like you enjoyed Harari!
Didnt even knew I was subscribed to this channel
Aint gonna complain🙂
me neither
I have found the same sort of centring and calming feelings that you described feeling from Alan Watts' work from your work. Thank you for all the amazing videos :)
Yea, he definitely centers you! Love the guy and his voice and his funniness.
I like these types of videos man keep up the good work!!!
Thanks Tiny Tina!!
Wow, thank you so much for this and for the whole book list! I would really enjoy something like a book review once in a while.
I'll think about the book review idea! Could be dope.
The quote from Amusing Ourselves to Death reminds me of Marshall McLuhan and his stance on mass media. He's considered the father of media studies because he involved himself with mass media just when it started to lift off, and studied the phenomenon precisely because he thought it would have an adverse affect on people.
I'm listening to Amusing ourselves to Death and I am amazed by it's clarity and profundity! ...Not to be ironic.
Listed in the order in which I read them, those are probably the ones that impressed me the most.
Where the WIld Things Are by Maurice Sendak
La faim du tigre by Rene Barjavel
Dune by Frank Herbert
Fictiones by Jorge Luis Borges
Also sprach Zarathustra by Friedrich Nietzsche
Master and Margarita by Mikhaïl Bulgakov
Breaking the Spell by Daniel Dennett
Great list! Some I've never seen before, so thanks for the recs!
@@schodes You're welcome. Thanks for replying
Love this! And this hit me cause it was uploaded on my Birthdate! 🥰
Just ordered that Alan Watts book, I love his spoken word stuff and that sounds like a good place to start with his writing.
Yea, I think it is. Way of Zen is denser and Taboo is a little general. Wisdom of Insecurity is a good middle ground.
Great list I would like to add a book that meant as much to me as The Meditations. The Essays By Michel de Montaigne. Thank you again for the list I will be reading or more likely listening to some of your picks this year.
I love Montaigne. Hope you enjoy some of these books!
I was about to judge you the moment you said Dale Carnegie, thank Gods you clarified. Appreciate all your other suggestions.
I love the depth of your mind. Would you consider making a film list as well?
Somewhere down the line I will absolutely make a film list. Thanks for your comment, and happy New Year!
I reckon Jonathan Haidt is a strong contender for the world's most reasonable man. His work is helping keep me fairly sane when people all around me seem to be going ballistic
I agree. And he takes flak like a champion.
@@schodes Apparently, by his own admission, he used to be quite hot-headed and argumentative, especially online. I find that hard to imagine. He's pretty much the only person who manages to use Twitter in a consistently civil and constructive manner. When it usually brings out the worst in everyone.
Read some robert greene great books 48 laws of power, laws of human nature extensive completley changed my internal monologue
Aye your videos are AWESOME bro
Aye thank you, yo!
Good guy Will shows all books in the first 2 seconds, so you can check when you finished one.
@@schodes Cool cool, thanks anyway, keep up the great work.
Great recommendations, bro! Subscribed!
You are an absolute gem. If possible, give more recommendations
Always on the search for a great read. I would recommend the book outliers.
Oh man, I read Outliers many years ago and recall enjoying it. Hope you enjoy these recs.
Was waiting for a book recommendation video by you👍👍
Word!! Here it is!!
