Hey, same here! I was tearing up when he got to the song. I'm from another country and did not grow up to Mr. Rogers so this is the first time I heard him speak for more than a minute. This is a video about persuasion and the techniques he used were literally laid out, but man, was i persuaded good.
Absolutely. When I was first editing it, I couldn't get through the testimony without choking up at some point. By the time I finished editing the video (ie; watched it 400 times), I was pretty desensitized to it. But I think his sincerity and his mission is too touching not to get a little emotional.
I joke about Mr Rogers, but jeez, that is an astounding speech. Only a few minutes and I felt him to be honest and real.

Yea, he's an easy target because he's so sincere, but that's kind of why I take him so seriously. He's got an incredible emotional intelligence and comes off as extremely authentic (cause he is). It takes a constant self-awareness and awareness of the person you're talking to in order to do what he did there.

The manner in which he spoke the English language was beautiful. These days, I cannot understand most English speakers, especially the ones whose primary language is Spanish. I often ask them to slow down. English is better understood with the right amount of speed.

There is a documentary on Mr. Rogers. It made me cry a couple of times. He was such a thoughtful, caring person.

TheInfamousBertman He wouldn't have thought of himself as such (beyond the reason he was Presbyterian, a Protestant sect). He had his flaws, many even, but he was able to balance them out with his honesty and being a man of God.

Mr. Rogers was, no doubt, the best of us. His passing was incredibly sad, but we should all strive to try to live in his example, at least a little bit (we can't all be saints all time) everyday.
This seems like a sentiment I would normally write ironically, but I'm not fucking around when it comes to Mr. Rogers. I honestly think he's the shining example all humans should work towards. If even a few of us are somewhat Rogers-esque every now and then, the world would be much better off.

I do like your message regarding your devotion to our 'shining example' Mr. Rogers. BUT...by using the 'F' word, you don't sound like a true follower of Mr. Rogers. Children pick up what we SAY and do...try to be a good example always, in every situation, and you'll BE an example of proper behavior and perhaps teach our young people to not use 'rage' words. Let's try to break that cycle of foul language. You show yourself to be more intelligent if you don't rely on the same old derogatory language that is so pervasive in today's culture. Rise above it and make us all proud. Thanks.
@@janetkalispell Obviously my comment was not intended with children as an audience. Also, I personally think it's perfectly fine to use the occasional "curse" word as long as it's not directed to make anyone feel small and only to drive home an emotional point.
There are times to use it and times to not. When talking to children? No. When writing an offhanded comment on the internet? Sure, probably.
@@L1ghtweaver I certainly think their comment was... flawed, particularly the focus on children and perhaps overly morally aggrandizing. That said, I will agree with two sentiments. One is that Mr. Rogers had a strong, strong aversion to cursing, and it shows respect to him to avoid using it when talking about him. It's by no means required of course, but it is a kindness you can *choose* to extend. The second is that it can show greater intelligence not to curse, not necessarily on moral grounds, but in that it is *harder* to construct a cogent, emotional sentence without cursing than with. As my grandfather relayed to my mother before I was born, and she relayed to me in his place since he passed before he could see me, "If one curses, it is a demonstration that they couldn't think of something else to say."
I personally curse very often, but I'm making an attempt not to as much now because I noted she was right. I was very often cursing because it was easier for me than constructing a sentence just as impactful without cursing. You are obviously free to curse in your comments, and if you feel that's the best way to communicate your thoughts by all means go for it. All I might ask is that you consider if there is actually a better way first. For instance, seeing that I share a similar sentiment to yours, I might have written the same sentence. But, when I try not to curse, the sentence becomes "This seems like a sentiment I would normally write ironically, but the detachment/dismissal of irony has no place near Mr. Rogers. It never came from him and therefor should never be directed towards him." I (personally, mind you) find that replacement to actually be *more* impactful.
With that all said, as long as you are true to yourself, I wouldn't have it any other way. In the words of Mr. Rogers, "There's no person in the whole world like you, and I like you just the way you are."

Personally, some of the smartest and kindest folks I've ever known were private potty-mouths, so I don't know about the "showing intelligence" part, but I get your point. Can definitely be more challenging to convey emotion without it. On your point of Mr. Rogers having an aversion to it therefore it's respectful to avoid when talking about his legacy, that is a very fair point.
He speech was humble and his no pride in his speech. He was calm as still waters, his speech was clear. Communication is they key to get what you want without insulting someone.

I used this method of communication in a D&D session and it was the most intense thing that happened in that session and I was able to persuade a sphinx to let us pass without any trouble. The DM was impressed and absolutely drained by the experience.
If every person had a tenth the compassion and understanding of that man, the world would be such a better place. He was truly something special.

Great video, though. I started it feeling very skeptical (ever the cynic) but came out the other side feeling like it's mostly good to hear. (Mostly. The cynic in me sees everyone in the periphery as a potential fraud who sees this as a lesson in how to gain control over weak people. "With great power...", innit?)
Its amazing how years after his death he is still teaching us. I was watching a video some time ago talking about why Mr. Roger's message is needed now more then ever, and this right here is the lesson from him we as a society need right now.
i don't know if it was intentional or not, but the ending with a reflective black screen and just Fred Roger voice over top was incredibly impactful. I have really appreciated the past couple videos that you have done and they stand out amongst the hundreds of well done video essays on you tube. I get the sense that you are not just making these videos to show how smart you are or to simply share information, instead it seems that you genuinely care about your viewers and want to make them better people. As you covered in this video, its not as much about the topic as it is about the approach, and this is what makes your channel so fantastic.

Feelings are mentionable AND manageable. We have forgotten how to manage them, I fear.
Or mentioning. I mean, most men are taught to be masculine, tough guys & are not supposed to show weakness (which, many "macho" guys seem to view legitimate kindness & genuine empathy as, preferring instead to directly resort to petty insults & overbearing force to ensure their dominance over the situation, rather than relying on the Ethos & Pathos that largely direct our understanding of things as we know them). This is why most guys that show sensitivity & some sense of humility are labeled derogatory names like "Sissy", "Wuss", "Wimp", "Pussy" (that last one being an extension of the term "pussy-whipped" for men who have conceded to their female significant others - whether it be a girlfriend or wife - and have let the female in question take charge [i.e. "wear the pants"] in the relationship, if only to maintain the structured stability & hopefully prevailing romantic feelings of love that the relationship should strive to provide for the both of them) & more recently "Beta Cuck" (particularly, these are men who don't want to be abrasive nor combative with others, as opposed to the more conventionally traditional way that the males of the world are instructed, which is to never back down from a fight & to use the supposed competition present in an argument/high-spirited discussion/debate as a means of achieving victory, even if it means undercutting, devaluing, demeaning & outright dehumanizing the purported rival they're engaged in battle against, without realizing that they're doing themselves a disservice with this sort of attitudinal behavior).

I almost jumped out of my seat when I saw you were talking about Mr.Rogers, because you are my favorite video essayist on youtube, and he is my favorite person. It seems like what is on everyone's mind right now is how to have an argument and not a fight with someone of opposing views, and I am surprised Fred Rogers isn't everywhere. Because he has been on my mind a lot recently. After watching this I realized the problem is we want to fight not argue. We don't want to win as combined force, because that means that opposing person would win too. The only, only people that win arguments are those that are selfless - I swear, Mr. Rogers is my guiding Saint, lets hope he can guide us all through this.

Currently working toward my Master's Degree in Rhetoric. Just wanted to say that you do a really excellent job representing some of the core thinkers of the discipline (Aristotle, Cicero, etc).
One greek work you might have already known with regards to the difference between argument and what you call fighting is 'Eristics' . So much of discourse today is merely about making your opponent look foolish, as opposed to showing them good will and 'leading them', earnestly, to your position.
Very refreshing to watch some explanation of rhetoric in the public sphere that did not make me cringe!

Hi, know of any excellent books you'd recommend to learn more about rhetoric?
Can't beat the classic "On Rhetoric" by Aristotle (for more ancient texts that aren't so kind to the practice of rhetoric, check out Plato's "Gorgias" and the "Phaedrus")
Then theres the roman "De Oratore" by Cicero - kind of dated, but his explanation about what makes something funny in the second book still holds true to this day.
More contemporary, but a boring explanation of different logical arguments there is "The New Rhetoric" by Chaïm Perelman and Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca

I came across Eristics as I researched this and figured it could be the topic of a whole other video. Maybe 'sophistry in politics'. It is an unfortunate truth that it is used more than, as you say, earnestly leading your opponent to your position. The presidential debates were rife with it.
Also, what a useful Master's. Having a keen knowledge of rhetoric, especially nowadays with our media-centric culture, is a must. It's everywhere, and I personally think it should be (along with civics) taught in every high school. Good on you and good luck finishing the rest of your degree.

The quote at 19:28 strikes me as particularly true. How often haven't we seen two people in a disagreement share *equally untrue versions* of the same story? It is by combining our stories on a topic that the solutions emerge. One half of a fight holds only half the answers.

As a little boy I never saw his show , I was just a bit older and he wasn’t on my radar . Now I’m a lot older and retired; I can’t get enough of his way of being there for ALL people and of course the little people. He studied to be a preacher, boy did he hit the jackpot!

Listening to Mr. Rogers talk made me cry. That man was too bright and pure for this world. I watched him for years as a child. He was the only male figure in my life and I apperciate him. That shit is so real.

Mr. Rogers talked about this moment and how he had planned to read the report. But he saw that Senator Pastore looked tired and weary of all the talk, so he discarded the planned speech and went with his instinct to know how to handle the situation. Mr. Rogers was still fairly early in his career, and not as well known. Later, this would be a no-brainer: no one goes against this quiet, earnest, and persuasive man.
This is really well-done. I'll be doing my best to incorporate this in my own political dealings.

I'm big on concessions in arguments. Like just trying to find something to tell the other person "you're right about this part" because it's a lot easier to get someone to think they just fudged a detail than it is to think they're completely wrong.

Man, he was and still is an icon for good vibes and spirit, we lost one of humanities greatest weapon against pure evil .. he was good on and off screen. He's something as was once known as a original gentleman. It's because of him that I know that not all White's are of evil.

This is the absolute best; it's completely changed how I view a debate, or just an argument in general. At the end of the day, the argument shouldn't be about who is right and who is wrong, but more so what the best possible outcome can be. Hopefully for everyone. This shows Mr. Roger's dedication as a person to his craft, and I find that very inspiring. Thank you for showing this!

This is one of the best TH-cam videos I have ever seen, and considering that I was predisposed to dislike it (it was assigned for class), that says a lot personally. So thank you. I feel this is so especially important in June 2022 when the most recent school shooting in Uvalde, Texas is underscoring our desperate need for national healing, despite our deep political divides over the violence within our society, & the mental anguish epidemic that continues to breed unabated, tragedy after tragedy.

This is a brilliant rhetorical analysis. What Mr. Rogers did so well was establish a meaningful relationship with his audience -- whether that be a powerful senator or a child on the other end of the TV set. He also presented a very different ideal of masculinity than what was commonly presented on television at that time -- one of compassion, vulnerability, and love. Throughout the speech, in fact, he makes this contrast between the prevalent cultural of masculinity and the alternative.
However, Sen. Pastore was also open-minded and willing to listen. While he may have been "tough", he wasn't without compassion, and he genuinely wanted to hear what Mr. Rogers wanted to say. I fear that many politicians in Congress today would not be so willing to listen.
Mr Rogers is a true inspiration of mine. When I first learnt about Virtue Ethics, that stated that good actions are not determined by the action itself but but the virtuous character traits that inspire the action, I thought of the great man that is Mr Rogers. As Aquinas states one can be a good person by following the lead of the virtuous, Fred Rogers is that man of which we can look to and follow. Even as a millennial born in the UK, Mr Rogers is still just as relevant and inspirational as he was 30 years ago in Pittsburgh. Thank you for this video and I truly believe that God put Mr Rogers in front of our TV to make the world a better place of which he did.

jonathan hart Really glad to see how much international attention this man has. As an American, while I feel utter digust at our modern times, I remember Rogers was once on this Earth and I feel better.
Pretty much from the time we are toddlers entering the world, people who are programmed by society criticize us. We are too much this, not enough that. We do need some guidance, but it becomes too much. Mr. Rogers tells us that we are able to be loved exactly as we are. From reading over these comments on so many of us breaking down in tears, ( myself included) tells me how much we need to hear that despite our flaws, we are worthy of acceptance and kindness. I think that’s the core of why we find comfort in this wonderful man. Thank you for the kindness Mr. Rogers.
I absolutely love this video. Curating ideas and coaching speakers all over the world is what I do for a living; this is the most to the point and all encompassing video I've seen on rhetorics. Simple to understand yet deep in its meanings. With great examples from philosophy to psychology. Fantastic work.

Mr. Rodgers is the man....his show was a great childhood memory. It is clear as day that he genuinely cares about children and wants the best for them. We need more guys like him in shows for the kids of today.
