The pendants or behilts are made and passed on earth by the devil to seek out the new rulers of hells legions.
It activates in the right circumstances when the correct person is nearby when they are in such peril they would sacrifice what is closest to them.
The deeper the sacrifice the larger the blessing.
One of the God hands, the little one is the one who manipulates and reminds griffith of the purpose for everything he had sacrificed up to that point is the one push him to finalize the deal.
Its why he then forces himself on casca because when he found her as a little girl where a wealthy man was forcing himself on her and she was powerless, he threw her a sword and gave her the strength to defend herself.
Which is partially why she felt so humiliated with feeling men needing to protect or aid her in battle.
He took back his last gift to humanity to sever his connection to it while also getting revenge against what he perceived as guts betrayal.
This is why it brakes her brain and she has the mentality of an infant after the feasting.
The woman God hand slaan I think is her name is obsessed with guts because she is a sadist and his ability to endure pain and the God hand at one point considers whether it was guts who was meant to be in Griffiths place as throughout the show the behilt only activated when guts is around Griffith.
Like when it twitches upon first interacting with him physically.
That along with how he almost stabs Griffith while as a God makes them consider his strength was what was actually chosen by the devil.
The skelly rider is an entity that hunts the demons.
He's holy intervention so to speak.
He is the previous wearer of this armor called the berserk armor which doesn't save you but pins, sews, and molds your body back together as you fight while inducing manic rage so you continue.
It ends up bleeding the wearer dry and somehow the skull knight dude got the deal he got to perpetuate the fight and seek out other specific people while fighting the God hands. Each hand is just the term for a collection of 5 demigods to rule a legions generals and apostles.
Its why he saves guts and later he uses the berserk armor.
It is around when he starts seeing a demonic black hound talk to him that tries to always convince him to end casca so he can continue freely hunting the demons unhindered and convinces him to force himself on her one day.
The berserk armor makes you question whether it is the demonic entity actually trying to convince him to give into his desire for revenge or if he isn't going schizophrenic from the constant trauma of battle as each night while hunting demons due to their sacrificial brands, evil entities seek them out unless in sacred places.
Casca because she at this point has a mind of an infant and was impregnated by guts whos baby is turned into demon by Griffith that she miscarried after the feasting, causes her to aloofly play with, love, and act over friendly to the things that put her in danger.
It is strangely an incredibly thought out masterpiece of sorts.
As horrendous as it is the conceptualization of it is art.
Imo its what anime is supposed to be.
Some of it the show doesn't explain but is only flashbacks picture glimpses to explain things.
Like guts childhood and how he became a wandering swordsman as a child to be picked up by mercenary groups and stuff.

This show/ anime/ cartoon has opened my eyes to the world more than my parents could've, the church, or any other mentor or wise man I know I'm earth so far. Through the imagination of Kentaro M (RIP) I was shown how evil, dark, deceitful and how naive we all are to this world and it's many mysteries. It's sharpened my discernment and intuition in to who you call your friends, who you follow and call your leader, do you really know anywho deep within their heart? Will they really fight with you or face death with you when the time ever came? These are serious questions we all should think about regularly, do you really know the people you have next to your families, your children?
It's made me reevaluate the church and it's pastor or leader, I no longer follow men I can't see what they do behind closed doors or what's in their hearts. Many of people are willing to die for organizations and groups they have no clue what the true motives are or if the founders are even true to heart. Just something to ponder. I disagree. I find it comforting in a sad way. I know that sounds weird but it sounds like the depression that comes with trauma but at the same time the inner strength to keep fighting that comes with surviving trauma. I view the song as guts internal turmoil that he faces in his quiet moments out of battle where he can’t push those feelings away anymore so that’s why he keeps fighting, not just for revenge because when he swings his sword he can only focus on thing in front of him instead of having to remember why he’s even moving anymore.

Glad you enjoyed Berserk. I would recommend the manga if you have time to read it. All anime versions cut out a lot from the arcs they cover. The version you watched specifically cut out Skull Knight (Ghost Rider) entirely when he actually showed up just after Guts left the Band of the Hawk. Also, the portion you watched is about 1/4 (really the entire Golden Age arc of the anime you watched is just a prequel) of the total story so, even if unfinished, there's quite a bit to dig into with the manga. Finally, an ending to the story is being worked on. Chapters are being illustrated by the author, Kentaro Miura's, team and the story is being handled by a personal friend of Miura, Koji Mori. Mori himself is also an acomplished mangaka (manga author) and his and Miura's friendship was the basis for Guts and Griffith's dynamic. Chapters are slow to release, but the story is at least coming close to entering it's final arc according to Mori and the team.

Agreed - the 97 anime is literally the tip of an iceberg. Other anime adaptations are not worth watching and regardless, none of them cover the full story.
The manga is a whole veritable saga, full of insanely well written characters, storylines, and detailed art - it will give you shivers, it may as well give you nightmares - but if you liked the anime, you will love the manga.
It also goes much deeper into the lore behind The Eclipse, the supernatural, and even into the very nature of God.

@@jacobtaylor7506Actually, some people will regret reading Berserk.
More accurately- some people won't be able to read it.
Berserk echoes the horrors and beauties of the real world and real life.
Life as it is for regular people- not pampered, sequestered individuals who live without threats of a beating or violence or any danger at all.
Though the demons may seem over the top and fantastical- many of the the things they do to people, especially women and girls unfortunately, are true to life and happening right now, all over the world.
There are many who do not want to acknowledge that and who hide behind disproven ideals.
When you hear phrases like "Everything happens for a reason" or "God's testing us, and everything will be fine" - you're observing reality avoidance and rationalization.
For too many, things aren't going to be fine, and "God's test" ends in a brutal rape/murder.
So what was the lesson that person was supposed to learn?
      To keep faith?
For the 6,7,8 year olds that happens to regularly in certain places in crowded cities and rural communities, that message is worse than senseless- it's insulting.
Sorry for the extreme messaging, but that is the premise of Berserk.
Life is a horror show, without mercy, brutal, sadistic, and ugly.
Life is also achingly beautiful, with love and deeply caring people- if you can find them, and not find, instead, one of the demon stand-ins on this planet.
Serial killers, sex traffickers. Crooked cops and politicians. A long list of predators, narcissists and simple amoral selfish people.
Decency is not the default position for humanity.

I don't think Griffith cared about Casca all that much. He only truly loved Guts, and Casca was a means to get revenge on Guts for leaving. I think at some point in the manga he says something along the lines of Guts being the only person that made him reconsider his goals. There are many ways to interpret their connection, but I got the impression that he was in love with Guts or just really obsessed with him.

Yeah i don't think griffith cared about her at all. He used her, and everyone else in the band of the hawk. Guts is literally the only person he cares about, views as his friend (and possibly even lover)
He knows Casca worshiped and loved him
He rapes casca BECAUSE he knows they love each other. He is doing this specifically to hurt Guts

    • @MidnightNad

Guts was the key to his success which is what changed his thoughts. After Guts actually did leave, griffith had to obtain his dream now or risk a (human vs human) fight with Guts for it. I believe that's why his next step (to marry to kings daughter) he took frantically after becoming a mess now that Guts could become his equal and stop his dream. An easier way to see it is a hawk had a favorite feather it believed it couldn't fly without it. One day when that single feather fell, so did the hawk. Griffith wasn't in love, he influenced his own equal.

    • @enaitat
      @enaitat 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +10

@@MidnightNad He didn't need Guts to fulfill his ambitions at that point though. He was useful, but not a necessity, particularly at the time Guts chose to leave. He was well on his way to achieving everything. In his thoughts, he mentions how Guts made him forget his dreams and how he was the only thing that made him lose his composure. How he felt longing, tenderness and jealousy and some other stuff (a lightning bolt inside or something along those lines) whenever he was around him. When he became Femto, he wanted to see Guts in person to see if his "heart was free" (paraphrasing). Personally, I think he was in love, and also very much obsessed with him.

  • @yossikha999
    @yossikha999 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +22

The building of Griffith as a villain is truly one of the best in all fiction.
He didn't even start as all that evil, he was literally willing to prostitute himself to an old pervert, so he won't risk the lives of his men doing mercenary jobs.
At some point all of the lives that died for & against his dream were more fuel for his ambition, for if he stops, all of this death was for nothing.
The only one who could make him risk that dream was Guts, an example being that Griffith risked his life to save him, something that he has never done for any of his other men, this is what bothered Caska about Guts & why Griffith hated him after he left.
Then, after his imprisonment of a year, when he is left as nothing more then a husk, and life lost all meaning, he is offered godly power, for the price of his band of mercenaries, and the man who he blamed for his downfall.

I love souls games and apparently Berserk inspired Miyazaki to create Dark souls and Elden Ring. I was also hearing how Berserk is one of the greatest stories ever so naturally, i watched the 97 show. It took me a minute to get into it but eventually i got hooked. Despite knowing they had to cut out a lot of content from the manga, i argue they still did an incredible adaptation.
I love the 90’s animation style it has, voice acting in Japanese was great, THE MUSIC is S tier. Casca is a great example of how to write a female character without it feeling like it’s “checking some boxes” like some work we see today. The ending really SHOCKED me and as the day went on, the shock went away and subtle tears came. Ending was so fucked, i’m replaying Elden Ring dlc and beating bosses up with Gut’s Greatsword (yes it’s literally in the game for those who don’t play souls-games) Ending also surprised me as I genuinely thought “If people say Berserk is one of the best stories ever….that implies it’s a finished story and the anime will end wrapping everything up”…
Man was i wrong…Golden Age is JUST the beginning. One day I’ll buy the manga but it’s sad Kentaro Miura passed before giving Berserk an ending so…hopefully it gets a proper conclusion one day. I’m not gonna bother watching the other anime adaptations cuz nothing will beat the 97 aesthetic and music for me. Not hearing Tell Me Why, I’m Waiting So Long and Guts theme for Berserk 2016 will feel weird….It makes me wish they can revive this show just like what Marvel did with X-Men 97 this year. But recently i was recommended a vid “Berserk 1997 Fan S2: Pilot” by ARCHE here on YT and I recommend it, it’s genuinely a well-done fan made episode that keeps the 97 energy! Great vid !

There is an in dept, twenty something hours video on YT that covers the entire story: anime and manga, by the TheAlmightyLoli. I'd highly recommend giving it a watch. the first half an hour or so is a bit slow, until he lays everything and start covering the actual story, but couple of hours in you'll barely need an anime to watch. He does a phenomenal job.
On the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood topic: it's perhaps my favorite anime. I'm always saying if someone needs an entrance to anime, here's where they should start. It guts you in E04 and then twists those guts while pulling in E10, but the way the story keeps going and pushes and the ending... 👌

While the Mangaka died he did give us enough to sort of pay off on most of what you may be worried about. The problem is he left us with more questions. The guy writing it now was his childhood friend who is very likely the inspiration for Griffith.
It's kind of crazy just how big that final chapter was for giving us a glimpse at everything we hoped for and simultaneously snathing it away. That whole arc was nothing but a breathe of fresh air after all the stuff that came before it.
I'm a lot more hopeful than most about the new guy writing the story but that's because we're in the final arc and all the pieces are in a place that you can guess what's going to happen pretty well. Especially since Miura always said he wanted a happy ending and frequently talked with his friend about what he wants to happen. Plus they made a whole studio for the purpose of being trained by Miura to recreate his artstyle. It'll never be like it was before but it'll still be good to me.

Very accurate, watching the Spawn show is a palate cleanser in comparison, like kitten videos.
Fortunately the best friend of Kentaro Miura is continuing Berserk with all the info Kentaro gave him on personal conversations.
The eclipse is so bad because the golden era makes you appreciate and know the characters, but the rest of the history is equally as dark but less heart breaking because the victims are "extras", mind you they often are very innocent.
But the last chapter Mtr Kentaro released was in some way worst than the eclipse in a compound emotional way, because now you are even more invested on the characters and all the effort, things they have suffer, lost, gain,...
The continuation chapters are top notch too, like Master Kentaro is steering the ship.
"TheAlmightyLoli" has a summarized compound video of the whole Berserk manga (he says it is very summarized, but it is +20 hours), the history has is ups and downs, from dark to hope, even the typical taste of a fantasy RPG in some parts, some humor for a much needed relief (like the good times in golden age) I recommend it, plus you can appreciate some of the beautiful artwork done in the manga, 10X the detail of the anime.
Entering the Berserk universe is comparable to entering hell on Dante's book "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here".

As for the emotional closure, the final chapters Miura drew provide that. It ends during an interim part of the story in which the manga could end naturally if necessary.
The story is being continued by his close friend whom he entrusted the ending to. Even should it fail, struggle on to Miura's end; you won't regret it. If Guts can get back up after the eclipse, so can we who merely observed his struggle. 😊

The journey Guts embarks after the eclipse is, to put it lightly..., full of hardship. But because, Miura the author is a master of contrast, the glimmer, that light at the end of tunnel is so warm and comforting. Each milestone for Guts, there's a bonfire, a campfire. Not a campfire of broken dreams, there could only be one of those and it's already behind him. The moments of rest Guts reaches throughout his struggles are so cherished by members who surround the campfire and by the community.
I know that alot of the comments are gonna suggest you to try the manga out and Miura's art has climbed to the status of a modern master of draftsmanship. So I'll chime in to person who composed for 97 Berserk and every other Berserk multimedia. A progressive rock techno hermit, Hirasawa Sususmu, man has been in the Japanese music industry since the 70's and by god has he gone against the grain of the mainstream since. He's a phenomenal guitarist and his roots was progressive rock, then he moved towards technopop and kept changing genres until he really established his own unique soundscape that could only be labeled as "Hirasawa Sususmu music". A sound he manifest through his avant-garde compositions, his stellar skill in playing instruments and his aetherial high tone singing voice backed up with electronic beeps and boops... Now how this technomancer hermit came to compose for Berserk was simple, Miura was a die hard fan of his. Listening to Hirasawa's music while he grinded away at his desk working on Berserk.
One of the first impression you would get from Guts is his brutality and ruthlessness, makes sense, that's how we are introduced to him. Now let's take a listen to what Hirasawa compsed as Guts Theme... It's definetly not something that would come to mind at the onset, but as you unravel who Guts is and Hirasawa really struck it bullseye. Guts theme holds a very special place in my heart and from what I saw from the community after the abrupt passing of Miura, where we all flocked to those 5 to 10 hour version of Guts Theme to grieve and share our own stories of how Berserk kept us going through hards times in life. Cause Guts would...
If Hirasawa has piqued your interest at all, I got a suggestion. There were few he would compose soundtracks for anime, but there was one, another die hard fan of Hirasawa who also met an untimely death. Satoshi Kon, a brilliant animation director who really captured reality in his animations. Where a kaleidoscope of scene transition that breaks the laws of physics and reality yet he brilliantly manages it with Hirasawa's track in the backdrop. MAn's edits were too fast for real film that only animation can be quick enough to keep up with his mind bursting with ideas...

you know, ive seen this anime several times over for about 2 decades, its by far my most favorite tv show ever made, but i never until now, realized, "yeah, it is a cult isnt it" before, i was like "these dudes follows a great leader who is great at what hes doing" and i kinda left it at that, but yeah, it really is a cult and it swooped by my head for so long.
I wish the team that made this anime had funding for more seasons, i think they perfectly encapsulated the story and its universe without the usual over the top sillyness that anime sometimes put into the story for seemingly no reason at all, and because of that i think the 97 anime is better than the manga which ive also read, but the manga has too many characters and is over the top silly at times, and yes, i know about that 1 dude in the anime, if they couldve just toned down his sillyness, this wouldve been a perfect show.

They tried to pick up from the eclipse but the animation style was so hated by the fans that they only got to do two seasons. One thing the anime left out was that moments before the eclipse Guts defeated one of the creepiest apostles (in my mind) the hedonistic, ape-man named Wyald.

As poorly as the 2016 Berserk was done, it starts at the proper beginning. I *HEAVILY* recommend reading the full story. Boy do i relate to that "watching the childhood r4pe scene" and not knowing which anime it was as a kid part.
Cos as a child I once came home from school, my mom went straight to bed from exhaustion or something idk so i turned on the TV to watch some cartoons, thats when it happened. My memory on that is VERY blurred but i remember all those soldiers dying in gruesome ways i hadn't seen in my conan, JLA & other cartoons before and seeing this muscular guy who i deduced to be the main character by how he wasn't just surviving but killing the demonic things, then it all flipped. I had NO concept of corn or sx at the time, i didn't know wtf i was watching but i sat through seeing this main character lose limbs (childhood me remember him missing an arm and a leg for some reason lol) and an eye as he watched his girl get r worded and then it ended. Just like that. Leaving me just staring at the screen, with my pants inflated and feeling that i definitely saw something i shouldn't have.
It's definitely one of the first memories burnt into my brain, yet it's so blurry that i would say i was at most 6-7 years old when i had the misfortune of seeing that.
I finally watched bersek in full when i was 20 which was 3years ago, when the grape scene started i felt the hardest blow of deja vu I've ever had, except this time i understood what i was seeing with the context. Felt like a full circle moment.

Glad you enjoyed it. You should do more anime villain analysis. I know you said your not really into anime but man their are some good ones. Ide recommend Bondrewd from Made in Abyss

I think credit also needs to go to my man, Korkas. Just a regular dude in a cult of blind zealots. He most likely didn't believe in Griffiths vision, but "just wants an easy comfy life for himself" and as such, he places his bet on what he thinks is the winning horse

Highly recommend checking out the manga. The rest of the story, even unfinished, is already equally important to the Golden Age Arc, if not more

The anime is basically a teaser for the manga. They left out the entire first arc, but only because this show was a prequel. Black Swordsman arc is underrated.
But the best stuff comes after this anime. The entire Conviction arc is the absolute best writing. Lost Children specifically.
However, the 97 anime is great for what it is.
I have full confidence in Kouji Mori and the team who picked it up after Miura passed.

So even though the author has died, his best friend and lead animator has taken on the manga project and plans to finish it.
As far as many of the questions about the lore you have, they are covered in the manga. The animation obviously leaves many details out for run time. As of now in the manga, Casca has had some of her sanity restored but then Griffith attacked and captured her. He is playing mind games with her in his new kingdom and Guts is making plans to mount a rescue. Griffith is killing off other empires and expanding his kingdom as the rest of the world is overrun with demons.

Before Griffith’s turn, guts is his shadow, he is his right hand, shoulder to lean on and ear to confess too. Griffith views him as an essential part of his future and plan, when guts becomes his equal (arguably his better) by defeating him it was like a man losing his shadow, he becomes rabid and panicked.
The irony is, he was right on the precipice of his victory and no longer needed guts for his dream, it was his pride, his ego, his fear of losing the only real friend he had ever had.
After Griffiths fall, he becomes guts shadow but not in a positive way. He becomes the pain and suffering that burdens guts, he becomes the thing guts constantly chases but can never lay his hands upon no matter how hard he tries, he becomes the rage that separates him from his love in casca.
Honestly one of the best written stories ever made.

you'll be back, we were all terribly hurt, we all came back. Berserk is awesome, easily my favourite manga, the message can be summarised as how, despite the world keeping you down, despite fate itself telling you to kneel, human will can stand up in spite of their destiny and move forward.

The only thing I dislike about the 1997 version is the complete removal of skull knight. Thats one of the main reasons I recommend the Movies/Memorial Edition.

    I highly recommend reading the manga;
    This isn't the ending, just an ending to the golden age arc;
    It's hard to explain what the rest of the show is like without spoiling anything, but what we essentially get is a main character (guts) in the depths of hell, his former self completely lost, doing anything to get revenge, but as things go on & he meets new people, he starts changing his goal to trying to find a cure for Casca & healing her;
& as I said... it's hard to explain without spoiling, but definitely give it a read, u won't regret it.
