    I'm an Affinity Designer user. Love the one time payment as opposed to a monthly subscription. The one thing that really annoys me about Designer is the vector brushes aren't true vector. They are actually raster texture that follow a vector path which is pretty disappointing. Really hoping that Affinity software will support true vector brushes in future updates.

      Yeah I never use the vector brushes, but I guess I never used them Illustrator either

    Nice video
    I use affinity exclusively (ditched illustrator for almost 3 years) the curvature does exist in affinity. Select the pen tool and it automatically appears on the context toolbar along with other options, a lot easier than illustrator.
    The width tool also exists in affinity by using pressure on stroke.
    All in all the only things I miss in Illustrator are the Vector tracing (I now use vector magic for that), shape builder and gradient mesh(I use blend modes and Gaussian blur for this)
    Affinity is superior to illustrator in many other things from pixel editing to effects panel to live adjustments and it's ridiculously fast!!!!!!!!!!!

      your comment is old but I just wanted to let you know you can do both vector tracing and mesh gradients in inkscape, which is a free program. it's super odd to me though that affinity doesn't have a mesh gradient feature though! that could cause all sorts of compatibility issues. you're supposed to be able to open and save AI files right? what happens when you open up an AI file that has mesh gradients? hopefully they add that feature in the new update

    Good overall comparison of each program. Personally I like Designer a lot more than I do Illustrator and it has less to do with the amount of tools and more to do with the overall user experience. Designer just feels a lot less clunky to use than Illustrator and transitioning between Photo, Designer, and Publisher feels like a breeze because in general each program behaves pretty much the same. Also many of the tools in Designer have multiple functionalities that combine a bunch of tools that Illustrator have into one single tool. A good example would be the Pen Tool which combines all the Illustrator pen tools into modifier and contextual shortcuts, which feels great in practice. Also, the Shape Tools are absolutely fantastic in Designer. You can save a lot of time when designing objects because of how flexible they are.
    That said, Designer really needs to focus on getting some more tools under its belt. Personally I want a shape builder tool, a knife tool, vector transformation tools (i.e. perspective), more text tools, and of course a raster to vector converter. In 1.9 they did add the Contour Tool and Linked Layers (a Photo feature, but they also work in Designer and it is fantastic for repeating patterns and symmetrical work), but Serif needs to start filling more of the gaping holes that vector artists have come to expect from a vector program.
    At least there is a way to compensate for Designer's lacking toolkit by using Inkscape as well. That program is free and while it is not nearly as polished or user friendly as Designer or Illustrator, it at least ensures that you don't have to rely on Adobe for vector work.

    I'm a long time Illustrator user and currently evaluating Affinity Designer. I'm torn between both, I love the speed/optimisation/simplicity/quick shapes of AD yet I also love the gradient mesh/patern maker/3d tool and lots more in illustrator. Since the company i work for pays for creative suite it's not an issue. but if i had to pay i think i would definitely go the Affinity route. Strengths and weaknesses in both apps. Long time Illustrator user and recently switched to Designer and love it. You can indeed scale and skew in Designer. Just use the move tool and hover over the nodes to scale. To skew, hover the cursor beside the side nodes on the outside of the object until you see 2 arrows pointing in opposite directions. True there is no width tool in Designer but you can control the width of the stroke in the sthe stroke panel using pressure. I wish there was a shape builder tool and a better way to make a pattern like in Illustrator, but for a one time payment of 35$ I'll look over those missing features anytime. I don't use half the tools that are on Illustrator anyways. Also, though not tool related, I love the pixel persona!

    • @bendesignsmedia

    The fill/gradient tool is my favourite in Affinity because it is so fun to use. I used to find myself having to edit them in a quite destructive manner in Adobe programmes. However, I would really love for Affinity to let us create free form grandient right away, instead of having to replicate that with more archaic and slower methods.
    I think from this video the features I would be interested in being added to Affinity would be: option to free from gradients, blend tool, graphing tool, improvements in text tool, the erase tool articulated with the vector design.

    After using Affinity designer for solid 15 months, I thought I'd go back to Illustrator just so I don't forget how to use it. Wow, editing nodes in Illustrator has been so frustrating these past few days! I forgot you had to switch through so many tools to edit/delete/add nodes. Affinity Designer really shines hands down for it's simplified way of editing nodes. I can't wait to go back to Affinity Designer once I'm done with this project in Illustrator :P

    Great video! This is ideal for those jumping ship from Adobe products into new apps such as Designer. I’d say my biggest letdown for Designer vs Illustrator is Designer doesn’t have a blend tool. The Blend tool allows users to get creative very fast and\or see hybridizations they’d have a hard time imagining otherwise. But for actual production work for clients both apps will do the job for sure.
    Also as someone that started his Affinity journey on iPad first I was sad to see that Designer completely abandoned its IPad UI on desktop. I wish we had the option to keep using that UI to make mobile and desktop work totally seamless if so desired.

I use it to make mockups of wooden pens and being able to easily use the shape builder to create the segments and the paint bucket to quickly fill them with the corresponding wood patterns is all I use it for. Thanks! A very good overview of both platforms. I personally use Designer 95% of the time - it is so much more intuitive and many times faster that Illustrator. Also it runs so much faster, and the UI is so much more refined. I can use all the shapes, build up a rough illustration, set up initial gradients. The other 5% of the time I spend in Illustrator, either tracing (best feature in the universe), or object simplify, or perspective warping. Illustrator suffers from panel overload. The Attributes panel, for example, could be removed and its options moved elsewhere. The graph tools also haven’t been updated for decades. If I have to make a graph I just go to Apple Numbers or Excel just because the graph options are way better. They should just remove the graph tool from Illustrator and create a brand new one for InDesign. I have to use Adobe stuff for work, but completely switched to Affinity for my personal work.

    Have been a (very) long time ADOBE .AI & .PS user, very long...ever heard of "Adobe '88" & PS version 1.0.7 yup, I learned those both simultaneously while also learning the MAC, so I LOVE Illustrator & Photoshop!! But I'm intrigued by Affinity & for me it'd be SOO easy to live without the Shape Builder (don't get that being an issue) since it's NOT necessary in Illustrator either. Before that came along only in CS5 we used Pathfinder, which did the SAME things. What' I'd like to know, are there ways (don't care whether a Tool or Menu item) to get the same/similar effects to (1) the WARP family tools, may sound weird, but Crystalize, Scallop, etc. are GREAT for creating Faux FUR looks. Also are there (2) *BRUSHES, specifically are there ways to create your own 'custom' pattern brushes to apply to text, shapes or paths, so many applications for this functionality! I often use the measure tool, & for me, the (3) Blend (shape) Tool is also VERY useful (& has been in .AI for a very long time) so IF there are ways to replicate these functions I'd LOVE to learn. PS there ARE Arrow shapes in Illustrator, under BRUSHES. TY!!

      @ben designs Tks for responding! The WARP tools aren't necessarily for text, they work on any object. Hard to replicate the amazing effects, so that's a bummer, but maybe down the line?! Oh, no liquefy isn't quite what I'm looking to do & it needs to be Vector not Raster but maybe with some custom made BRUSHES? At least that may be an option. Sad also there's no (Shape & Multi Color) BLEND. I saw there's even a way to do this in Inkscape via Interpolate command (or something.) I use this quite often in .AI, so maybe that will come down the line too! Anyway after seeing sooo much positive info on Affinity I'm going to give Designer & Photo a try (never had a need/use for InDesign or QuarkXPress, so I've no need for Publisher) especially while the sale is still running! I'm not afraid of work arounds (eh hem, Shape Builder,) as long as I can get my desired effects, so I will play around & see! TY

Is there some way? 🤞(2) Also, do you know, is there a way to take a shape or a line & CREATE OUTLINES? I see CONTOUR Tool does create outlines, but you still have the CENTER line of the original shape. For ex using a brush stroke & then create outlines where I may change the NODES individually of the different points of each stroke from the brush, if that makes sense. The way Illustrator creates outlines of an object on the OUTSIDE & INSIDE of the object, so that it is no longer a LINE but an OBJECT with nodes to change & or to fill & potentially outline again, if possible. I own a design shop and we switched to Affinity (all three). The difference to me if minimal and there is nothing I could not do in Affinity that I could do in illustrator. The cost thing is amazing but the truth is I went to Affinity and then actually went back to Adobe and I could not deal with it. What I love love about Affinity especially for logo and flyer design is the simplicity and the ui is to me way better than AI. I think your point is well taken that over the years they have basically accumulated a lot of tools in AI that probably are not relevant. Also the program is so clunky. It is amazing to me how smooth and snappy AD AP ans AP are on an M1 mac. After Adobe made PS M1 ready it was better but still was having issues. Yes, the shape builder tool would be nice and so would image trade but here is a counter argument to that. Efery tool in AD can basically get you the same result and I read this i terview with the Serif founder?and he said the reason they hace not done image trace yet because they want it perfect. Whether he is being real or not I would agree that image trace in AI is ok but in alot of cases it poops out or is lame. Im rambling but basically I am digging it and that contour tool I think has a lot of possibilities.

    Demonstrating the shipbuilder tool with two shapes doesn't show it off at all. When you have many compound shapes the efficiency of the shape builder tool is indispensable. Can it be done differently in another app using Boolean functions? Technically yes, if you got all the time in the world. However, no where near as efficiently.
    It's odd they haven't put that in Designer yet. It's been talked about for Designer since 2017. Not sure what the hold up is.

      @bendesignsmedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bendesignsmedia I don't understand why Affinity hasn't done it already. They were talking about it back in 2017. Is it that difficult to program? I am hoping that by 2.0 they do, because I would like to make the switch, but my workflow is too attached to the shape builder's efficiency.

    • @Frozen_Death_Knight
      @Frozen_Death_Knight 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@funlightfactory6031 The most likely reason is that their boolean operators have a bunch of bugs to them that would in turn make a shape builder tool buggy as well. If Affinity can't properly add, delete, or divide vector shapes without creating artefacts then any tool built on that will not work as you would expect them to. Especially divide is notoriously bad because it creates very unpredictable results by adding tons of unnecessary nodes. It also can't boolean open shapes and other stuff you would expect, so as long as that is not fixed.
      Until the bugs are fixed I would not expect them to have a shape builder tool.

  • @patrickr.9607
    @patrickr.9607 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Well, it's true that Designer has a lot less to offer than Illustrator in terms of features, so it can't compete with Illustrator at the moment. But you also have to remember how many years Illustrator has been around compared to Designer. Of course, I have long wished for more tools that I know from Illustrator. But on the other hand, I think Illustrator has too many tools. Not to be misunderstood, but all the individual transformation tools that Illustrator has I find rather superfluous and is much better solved in Designer. Because here you need mostly only the move tool. With this tool you can move, rotate (position the cursor a bit further from the outer corner points, then the rotation arrow appears or the upper middle point has an extension, which is the lever for rotating), tilt (similar to the corner points for rotating, only the middle outer points) and resize objects. In addition, several tools are multifunctional.
    By additionally pressing and holding the Control, Alt or Shift key, further functions are activated, as for example with the node tool. By additionally pressing the Alt key, you get the vector lasso tool to select the individual nodes.
    Which additional function the individual tools have, one sees at the lower edge of the work surface. There the combinations are shown with the additional functions.
    Regarding the functions of the eyedropper tool from Illustrator, there is a similar function, but unfortunately not as a tool. Here you select the object for the Copy command. Then you select the other objects and use the Transfer Style or Transfer Effect command in the Edit menu. Otherwise, you can also save the appearance of the object as a style, for which you then have to open the Styles panel.

    I'm probably the only person watching this to see if I truly need to get Adobe Illustrator. I am a big Affinity fan. Specifically Affinity Designer. However, I am trying to make a career out of my passion for design. Not using Adobe , hurts me in my job search since it's "iNduStRy sTanDArD". Learning is also more challenging since everything is geared towards Adobe unless you're just wanting a hobby. I am also seeing designers I follow using tools that make work flow 10x faster and easier, than what I can do in Affinity. I'm starting to get faced with the reality that I'm going to have to bite the bullet with Adobe if I want to make something of myself *sigh*.

      You probably do need to know Adobe Illustrator for a job search, that doesn't mean you need to own it, you can find a library or a university where you can use it and learn it. If a company requires you to use Illustrator they should be providing it to you. If you are freelancing and clients want you to use Illustrator you should be able to bill them for software costs.

    Adobe Illustrator is simply too complex, unintuitive and difficult to learn. What you have failed to mention is how valuable the Pixel persona is in Affinity designer. It allows you to paint in your fill using a clipping path technique that is very easily done and multiple colors / brush patterns can be added and blended. Multiple brush strokes allow you to create complex fills easily and quickly. The ability to use pixel / raster layers inside of Designer, quickly and easily allows an artist to much more quickly develop complex art in a much shorter time, and it allows someone new to the software to do these things without having "too many" tools to learn.

Like all industries, newcomers enter the market with a simpler take on things and rapidly gain footholds much like the Affinity products have done.
