1. When I am perplexed, troubled and scared
I look up overhead and see a black bird in the air
With eyes dark and empty as my sickly mind
Flying aimlessly up in the sky
2. When I am melancholic and in despair
Above myself I see a blue bird in the air
Revealing my feelings by his tone and cry
Flying aimlessly up in the sky
3. When I am angry, sullen, seeing red
Higher than myself I see a Red Bird overhead
It's beauty makes me realize my frame of mind's unwise
While he flies aimlessly up in the sky
4. When I am feeling clean, innocent and fair
I look up in the sky and see a white bird in the air
It's cooing is as soothing as the gentleness inside
While he flies aimlessly up in the sky
5. All the feathers of flight and the songs they sing
Have a way of bringing light and giving new meaning
To our attitudes and platitudes pertaining to this life
While they playfully fly aimlessly up in the sky
