This is the best flip through and description of MCT that I've seen. I've purchased the Island level as well (only teachers guides except for practice island). It seems like MCT is a fun and creative way to learn grammar, I just wish the instructions were clearer.
I started this a couple months ago with my 5th grader. No other grammar programs have stuck thus far. This one has been incredible for us both. I only purchased the teacher guides and with practice island as the exception to purchasing both. For my student, I personally wish I would have gotten him his own copy as he is easily distracted and I feel if he had his own copy, he could follow along better. We are getting the language and poetry portions after the first of the year. Wonderful video!
Thank you for sharing! So glad you have found something that is working for you. This is definitely a different approach when it comes to LA, but it works!
We started town level this year (first year MCT) and are just finishing grammar town. He got most questions (19/25) wrong on the pre-test (despite 2 yrs of grammar with our previous curriculum) and after 10 weeks he took the post test and only had 5 wrong. I am so pleased and now we are working on Ceasers English which is vocabulary and he is learning so much. I'm learning a lot too and realize all of the gaps I have in my education
Watching reviews and perusing the Royal Fireworks Press website, it seems like there is little practice in the Grammar Island workbook. Are there practice sheets within the workbook itself, or must you purchase Practice Island?
There is a super little amount of practice in the grammar or sentence island (so much that you don’t need a student book… the teacher work and a whiteboard would suffice). Most of the practice is in practice island.
It’s a little confusing if you don’t know what to do when, but once you figure it out, it is pretty simple. We spend about 40 mins split into 2 sessions a week on it and we are getting through it easily. My kids are on the older side, so that’s a factor, but it is a pretty fun and different LA program.
This is incredibly helpful. My daughter (11.5) is struggling with writing, and I have always been tempted by MCT because it seems so thorough, but it sounds like we need something with more hand-holding for my struggling writer. Have you continued with Writing with skill? Do you love it?
I have not used Writing with Skill. We have used IEW, EIW, and Winning with Writing. For my struggling writers, I like IEW and Winning with Writing. Winning with Writing is easy to hand to the student and they can do it pretty easily in their own, but IEW really teaches them some skills. I do recommend IEW Structure in Style for a beginning IEW user and that you take your time with it (no need to try to do it all in 1 year… take 1-2 years and keep it from getting too stressful. IEW has made a huge difference for my kids who need lots of help with writing.
What was the reason you chose this curriculum? Just genuinely curious. I have been wanting to do this but I was waiting until he was around the age he is, so now I’m looking harder into it.
I chose it because we like a literature based curriculum around here, I though it would be a unique way to review things with my girls and a fun way to introduce some grammar concepts to my boys… and I was curious :) we only used it that one year and we did enjoy it, but it is not the curriculum for us long term. I prefer to mix and match more independent style LA curriculum for my kids.
@@CalmintheChaosHomeschool I purchased all the digital downloads for the Practice Island set! So much more cost effective, esp for 4 kids! I'm gonna dive in with all of them this week! I'm very excited! We needed some transformation in the LA dept of our homeschooling. :)
What do you think? Do you think that this language arts program would work for your kids?

Thank you so much! It has been fun. I love trying out new things.

Much needed video. I purchased the Level 1 teacher edition as well and needed some explaination on when to use what. Thanks so much.
I'm so glad that this helped!

Right! Homeschooling is showing all my gaps too :) Glad this program is working did you.

Thank you so much!!! This video is exactly what I was looking for! ❤
Great! So glad it was helpful!
Thank you for doing this. I am interested in MCT but, it is so challenging to get a feel for what its like.
It certainly is… even until you start using it, honestly.
This looks like a very fun, not overwhelming and yet effective Language Arts. I’m definitely going to look into this more. Thank you for sharing.

@@CalmintheChaosHomeschool sorry! I commented on the wrong video. 😂 sorry to be so confusing.

Are you still using easy grammar in your homeschool too?
Which poetry books do you enjoy?
The last one we enjoyed more was 104 Poems of Whimsy and Wisdom. Here is a link: www.sonlight.com/104-poems-of-whimsy-and-wisdom
This is very interesting 🤔. I hadn’t heard of MCT before but not sure it has enough actual hands on student work…
Nope, not a ton of hands on work. It’s a little more teacher intensive. It’s up to the teacher to decide what activity to do with the options.
Wow I love the idea of doing this as a group!!
It works for us :)
