I am using Poodle and plan to continue with Island, but I've faced an internal struggle the entire time. Do my kids need grammar that goes this deep? How will it benefit them? I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.
I started my older one out with daily 6 writing, and with first language lessons. Shifting to the MCT model has made grammar enjoyable for my kids. Now that my oldest is finishing up Voyage level, I can see the impact that it has had on her writing, without having to force formulaic writing. My Wednesday video on Voyage might give you more insight.
We did all 5 books in one year. I think like 32 weeks. One chapter a week. You can easily skip the last 2 and prioritize the first 3. If you really just want a hard fun dose of grammar, try book 1. Each MCT level recaps the same info but with a more complex understanding.
I’ve been going back and forth about introducing MCT next year when my son goes into 2nd grade, what would you say is the benefit of MCT compared to other grammar curricula? What makes it superior? Also, does it take any extra “teaching” to convey the concepts taught or is everything within the text sufficient enough for the littles to grasp these intricate concepts of grammar and poetry? I’m so indecisive 🙃 lol
In my experience, I prefer the 4 level sentence analysis of MCT and the discussion approach without excessive practice. My other grammar experience was with sentence diagramming and this is so much more simple and to the point. Every bit of instruction you need for grammar is included. Also, in the later levels even the classic literature readers will build on the same analysis style. I do have a video coming Wednesday with the Voyage level, level 3.

That's what I did the first time we used it, as just a real aloud. Once I wanted to actually have my daughter work through it, I got the student books so she could write in them. Made my life easier.
I love your videos and I'm so thankful for all that you share! I am finishing up All about reading level 1 with my recently turned 5 year old, she's honestly doing so well and is totally getting it. I am intrigued by MCT Poodle Series, but wondering if it's too early to introduce it to her? Would you recommend waiting until she's done with all about reading? Or do you see a benefit in starting MCT this early?
The first time we did them as a read aloud while my youngest did AAR level 3. I didn't expect her to actually retain or do the work until this year with AAR4. You could wait or go super slow. There's not much rush until you're ready to move next into the MCT Island level. My daughter was nearing reading independently and confidently when we started this year with actual expectations around Poodle.
I am not familiar with that program. A quick Google search looks like it could work well. We used all about reading level 4 and all about spelling level 3 with it. I believe they are all phonetics based. I imagine if LOE suits your style, it could be a great partnership.

We just read the chapter, and then we would spread the sentences over the week. I can't say for sure, but maybe 20 minutes to read and 10 minutes for sentences 🤷♀️
Is it necessary to do Poodle before the first level of MCT? I was hoping to skip Poodle even though your video makes me want to do it anyway because it's BEAUTIFUL. The cost is why I was hoping to skip it.
Nope! My first kid didn't have poodle. I just chose to start my little one early and poodle fit the bill. In my brain it's like a primer level. Great if you can, solid foundation but also not necessary.

Can you just get the manual? It all looks the same as the student book on the previews.

Short enough that I certainly don't get bored or feel overwhelmed. Long enough she's getting the info.
